My generation have really grown up
with porn since we were, like,

10, 11 years old.

And I think that exploring
how that affects young people

is really interesting.

So, I watch of lot of
different types of porn.

Like, spanking porn,
I just, like, get off to

a gay video, for example.

Growing up, if I watched a gay porn
video I would then straight away

make myself watch a straight video.

Because at the time I was feeling
guilty for liking those videos,

and it took me a really long time to
realise that once you accept

yourself and love yourself,
then you can happily watch whatever

porn video you want.

Do you feel like it affects
you in, like, real sex

situations at all?

It definitely makes me want to
pursue stuff like that in the
bedroom. Mmm.

I'm at a stage now whereby, like, I
know myself, I know my sexuality,

I know I'm not gay, like, I'm
sexually fluid.

So, I haven't watched porn
for about three years.

I didn't have any sexual experiences
until the age of 16,

even a kiss. I'd only had porn.

Almost every day from
the age of 12 to 15.

So, my entire bodily reaction to any
arousal was triggered by porn.

You don't hear the side of it from
women who are affected by that
as well.

Yeah, there's not. That's really
interesting. I never knew that.

Yeah, well, I also,
when I was googling, didn't find

that many, but there
are some as well.

There are women who also have the
physical effects of watching porn.

The current mass production of porn
made by men, for men, using women

as collateral is harmful.

It completely permeates our
society, I would say.

So, I think it does
impact on everything.

I thought that I would not
get on with a feminist.

But after her speaking
about how she feels on some things

in the porn industry,
it was interesting.

I don't 100% agree with her,
but I kind of get

where she's coming from.

I've kind of become not addicted,
but more watching porn, like, every,

like, couple days, maybe every day.

It's definitely not a good thing,
cos it's made my expectation

for normal girls to be sky-high.

I do watch porn on, like,
a semi-regular basis.

But I have no kind of, I'd say,
like an emotional attachment to it.

Any particular genres
tickle your fancy?

I kind of, like, delve
into lesbian a little bit.

And purely because I find
it a little bit

more visually stimulating.

I've always thought
that porn and sex are two

completely different things.

So, I wouldn't kind of look at porn
and think "Oh, that's what I should
be doing."

I've had threesomes with girls,
I've had threesomes with one girl,

one boy, I've done that,
I like to experiment.

I want to be who I am today.

I want to find my voice,
without porn, if anything.

So, I grew up in care.

And then I got abused in care
up to the age of 17.

I've gone through the counselling,
I've been though the wars.

It kind of made me feel like men
had this hierarchy,

you're just supposed
to do what they say.

Since I've started exploring porn
and exploring my body, I've learned

that that is not the case.

That's why porn for me I think is,
it's what gave me back my voice.

I don't have to watch it every day,
but I know it's there for me.

I'm really proud of Nariece.

I think it took a lot of courage
and bravery to speak to

five strangers about what
you've been through.

Especially when you've been through
something as heartbreaking

and traumatising as abuse.

She struggled a lot, clearly,
and I think now she's sort of come
out the other side.

a neurologist coming from LA.

And she's going to be kind of
delving into the world of arousal
with us.

I've always been very
interested in the brain,

neuroscience side of porn.

She is going to do some scientific
tests on us about arousal

in relation to porn.

I'm Nicole Prause.

And I'm hoping to look at kind
of how your brain responds

to different types of pornography.

So, today we're hoping
to do a couple of tests.

The thing I'd like to test
is to show you a variety

of relatively short, like,
two-minute film clips of different
sexual acts,

and see, kind of, how your brain
and body respond to those.

So, I'll ask you, like, how sexually
aroused you feel,

and then I'd see how that
mapped up or failed to map up

with what your body responded.

So, do we have any volunteers?

I'm happy to participate.

I'd be interested to see
what results are found.

I feel like I need to do it.

First I'm going to run through
a little demonstration with you.

I want to see if you feel
you've been influenced having viewed

sex films on your
perception of the body.

Right, so, I would like you to
take a look at our models.

Oh, wow.

So, which of these do
you think is the average

represented in pornography?

Wait, is this is flaccid or erect?
Erect, yeah.

So, average size erect man.

Is that even, like, normal?

It's possible.

I think this is the average penis
size, and this is like the porn
star penis size?

That one. So, I think this is
probably the average porn penis.

I'd say this one is the average
porn star penis.

I think you guys are thinking
that everyone in porn

has a big willy.

We don't actually know
what the average size

is as performers,
but we have an idea

of what the average size guy is.

That happens to be this. Ah.

So, average size we think
is about five inches,

around six inches long.

There's a question in pornography
when you see these unusual sizes

or atypical bodies,
how much you realise

that you're looking at a fantasy.

And I think you are all able to say,
like, "Oh, yeah, well, porn is
bigger but that's not

"the normal guy."

So, how do you think viewing
pornography has influenced,

if it has, your body perception?

I think I've always sort of known
that within pornography penises

are generally larger.

Obviously, looking at females
represented in porn, you sort of

have unrealistic expectations
of how girls' bodies are.

I think as a woman there's
not very much variation

in vaginas in pornography.

And I think that actually a lot
of girls grow up and feel

like their vagina isn't normal.

I think that that's where I got
my first expectation,

that I needed to shave all my pubes
off, was from watching porn.

OK, interesting.

So, why don't we go see how the
brain responds to pornography
directly?

So, first we're going to get
the connection between

this and your head.

So, this measures brain waves,

it's called electroencephalography,
or EEG.

And it gets through the skull,
all the way to the outside

of your head, then we can pick
it up, as electrical changes.

Does it mess my hair up?

It's definitely going to
mess your hair up. Oh, no.

So, in addition to the headset
that you've already got on,

we're going to add two measures.

We're going to use galvanic skin
response. That's going to go on your
hand.

And we're going to add a penile
response that goes around the shaft
of the penis.

When you get more erect, it expands.

And that's just a measure
of sexual arousal. OK.

And for women, you have this inside.

It basically shines light
out into the vagina,

and as more blood comes into the
vaginal wall, it'll reflect more
light back to the instrument.

We're going to be showing
you that series of films.

After each film we'll ask you to
rate your sexual arousal level.

So, I'll rate that myself?

So, we'll be measuring
your physiology to tell us some

of that information as well, but
then we're also interested in what
your impression is.

So, I'm going to go ahead

So, going in there taking

because, having things put

especially having to put

And I just thought
that was proper weird.

It was the first time I've watched
porn for about seven

or eight months.

I think what's really
interesting for me

is that just because you disagree
with something doesn't mean

that you aren't aroused by it.

Think we finished all our

those results and get back

I'd never thought about what a
normal penis is.

And it's just kind of freaked
me out a little bit.

go and meet a plastic surgeon.

His main kind of thing that he does
is penis enlargements.

I've kind of been drawing

comparisons between porn and
society.

And I think plastic surgery is a
really good, kind of, bridge for
those two worlds.

how people with issues of body

confidence or body image are trying
to replicate those ideal body

types through surgery.

of pornography would sort of make

you want to have a bigger penis?

Yeah, cos it's definitely a porn
thing.

But especially if you're consuming
porn from early teenage, kind of,
years,

maybe you looking at pornography
and seeing a big dick would make
you think that that's normal.

porn these days?

That was the first time I've watched
porn for about eight months.

What I think is remarkable
is you have a lot of activity

throughout the entire session.

Was it unusual that I was pretty
aroused for all of it across the
board?

No. So, you show what's a classic
gender distinction in this respect.

So, women have a low specificity
through a lot of research.

And that is, you can show women
movies of monkeys having sex

and they'll have somewhat
of a vaginal response, even to that.

That's crazy.

So, I think the way
that you rated the films was,

for example, that's feeling
more neutral about the first film,

then the heterosexual, kind
of, more standard fare...

Is this test telling us
what we're actually aroused by?

Because I've never really watched,

I've never really watched
that type of porn.

There are a few things we might be
able to tell from it. Yeah.

It could be sexually arousing,
it could be disgusting.

Like, there could be a lot
of emotional things happening.

So, Ryan, is it predominantly white
porn that you watch?

It's rare that I watch the black
girls, cos I don't really...

Why is that? I don't think
I'm into black girls.

I just got a bad experience
with a black girl that I tried

to date a few years back.

For someone to say

It's very offensive for someone
to say that they are not interested

in dating any women of black
or brown skin colour.

I think that is an insane
generalisation.

it actually made me really want
to sit down and kind of deconstruct

that idea that he has in his head.

So, when you said, "I'm not
attracted to black or brown girls"
yesterday... Yeah.

..can you see at all why that would
be offensive to a black or brown
girl?

I was being honest.

I just don't fancy black girls.

I don't fancy mixed race girls.

And for me, because I am
an individual with my own

and how such a big story

for, like, a long time I repressed
and kind of ignored a side

I think representation of various
sexualities within various different
fields is a good thing.

Leaving that, I feel very empowered
and I feel very proud of who I am.

to kind of speak about my feelings,

maybe feel uncomfortable

but it's just the journey
that I'm on at the moment.

Where I'm on this journey,
I feel like my goal is to kind of

be at one with how I feel.

I'm sensing a self-esteem

You're chasing girls
that you can't have.

The rest of them can
just kind of be used for sex,

they're kind of disposable.

I'm scared to reveal
my life to people.

I'm scared to kind of speak to girls
and tell them about my life.

So, there's a fear of intimacy here?
Yeah.

A phobia of intimacy?
Massive phobia.

Would it be that something
bad has to happen for you to change?

I feel like I have hit my
rock-bottom, and it still didn't
make me change.

How painful was what happened?
Massively painful.

It made me hate women.
It made me hate women.

I was scared. I was scared of the
situation that a girl has put me

in and made me feel,
even though I know I'm not a nasty

or a horrible person.

Were you accused of rape?

Yeah. Erm, I got...

It's OK, just breathe.

Jesus.

I'm here with you.

It's OK to let some emotions out.

I know this is hard for you.

I just felt like I can't trust
with what happened.

I just can't trust women
any more, because of that.

And it's like, it was probably two
months of it getting investigated.

I never got convicted,
never even got anywhere near court

or anything like that.

It ruined me as a person,
to be fair.

I'm so sorry you had
to go through that.

I'm scared to this day.
I'm scared to this day.

So, for example, if I take a girl
out and then sleep with them

on that night, I'm scared that...

..what they're going to...
What's going to happen the next day?

I'd like to really help
you learn that, actually,

women can be trusted,
and learning how to trust again.

I think that you deserve
companionship in your life.

Now, I'm not sure how
sex addicted you are,

so that might be for
another conversation,

but I think it's a very good thing
for you to consider really delaying

sex with women, if possible,
in order to see who

they are as people.

I know that I want to change
and I know that change is needed.

The conversation that we are
having is telling me that you've got

really good self-awareness.

You know exactly what's not serving
you well in your life and that means

that you can then decide
when you're ready.

I'm just scared
how I'll, like, feel.

Like, this is why a lot of people
in this house have said I'm kind of

like just a bit of a lads' lad.

That's because I don't want
to get my emotions out.

How do you feel that you've shared
that experience, that awful

I feel I've come a long
way on this journey,

but I need to let go
of the hate that I have inside.

I don't know how she got me to kind
of speak how I actually feel and

what's actually stopping me
from meeting someone.

After seeing the therapist,
I've realised I have a massive

unhealthy relationship with porn,
and I need to kind of take

a look at myself and kind of get
away from that and put that energy

that I'm putting into porn, put it
into something else, really.

which is basically someone
that watches no porn

and doesn't masturbate.

He's had some experience

I think it's going to be
really important for me,

because I've gone
through that personally.

I was watching porn almost every
day from the age of 12

to about 15, 16.

And I really noticed,
during real life intimacy,

my physical arousal
was really affected.

I decided to stop using porn,
and after about six months,

I returned to my natural
physical arousal.

personal experience?

From the age of about 12 to 15,
I used to watch porn

almost every day.

My real life intimacy
with my boyfriend was affected.

My libido was low.

I couldn't get physically aroused.

It's the same that happened to me.

How old were you when
you started watching porn?

I think that it was around 12.

Yeah, same as me.

I was so addicted and my
brain was so into it,

I couldn't, like, satisfy
myself without porn.

It's like a drug.

You feel like you want to keep
watching, keep watching.

Now it's worse, because teenagers
have mobile phones,

and I've heard people of eight years
watching porn.

I'm at the stage at the moment
where I rely on porn a lot.

Instead of going out and meeting
girls, porn is just easy.

So, what's your top tips for me to
kind of not go on it, or think about
it?

First do a detox -
stop watching porn.

For example, you actually can, like,
unfollow every girl that you follow.

It would take me all
day if I did that.

Lots of people would say
that masturbating is kind of part

of a healthy lifestyle.
Why stop masturbating altogether?

If you still masturbate,
you don't reset your brain.

If you stop masturbating
you will reboot your brain,

you will start feeling more
socialised, making relationships,
connections.

What's better than your personal
experience, to prove something for
yourself?

Yeah, I get that.

I feel like I've just realised right
now that I've got an addiction.

I didn't think I had.

And I never thought this was one
of my addictions until,

like, meeting you,
and knowing how to kind of get

past those problems.

It's just kind of inspirational
for myself.

too deep involved with it.

I should be kind of going and

People's relationships with porn
is always very personal.

Some people do think
that porn can be empowering,

but I think the problems
that it causes society

are kind of more important, really,
than somebody's personal
satisfaction.

Porn isn't this sugar-coated thing.

It is a complex issue.

And no matter what your opinions
towards it are, you need to be aware

of every single
implication that it has.

Where I thought the porn industry
was black and white,

there's actually black,
white, grey, blue, green.

The main thing I've learned, so far,
is that you definitely

need to sort of fill in the gaps,
rather than throw a blanket

on it and be like, "This is all
wrong" or "this is all right."

Throughout this journey
I've become more informed,

but probably also more conflicted
about how I feel about porn.

I still feel very unsure.
