Take the following situation:
A man is dying of cancer.

That's the third time
we've had cancer this year.

He's being treated
by a first-rate doctor,

who, a crucial point, is a Catholic.

The doctor lives in the same building
as the patient and his wife.

The wife begins waylaying the doctor

to find out if her husband
is going to live or die

and, if so, when.

The doctor can't tell her.

To tell her would be to pass sentence.

Being a devout Catholic,
he can't do that.

She becomes so persistent

that the doctor suspects her
of having an ulterior motive.

His suspicions are correct.

The wife is pregnant by another man.

Her husband doesn't know.

It's also her first pregnancy.

She'd been unable
to have children before.

The woman loves
her newly conceived child.

But she also loves her husband.

If he doesn't die

she'll be forced to get rid of the baby.

If he does die, she can have the child.

Like it or not, the doctor knows
the child's life is in his hands.

I know how the story ends.

Warsaw's a small place.

To make it more difficult for you
- the child's alive.

And that, perhaps,
is what matters most in this story.

and that I thought
that was the most important thing.

I want you to describe
the characters of the actors

and their motives.

What will be piquant is that
we both know the originals.

The heroine is a 6-year-old Jewish girl

hiding out
in the cellar of a Polish home.

But she has to leave.

Her father's in the Ghetto.
His friends look for a new refuge for her.

They find a likely place.

But the new caretakers insist on the girl
having a baptismal certificate.

It's a cold dark evening.

The girl and her guardian

come to the home of the people
who've agreed to act as godparents.

It's a young Catholic couple.

The girl's frozen.

It's taken her all afternoon
to cross the city.

She and her guardian
enter the apartment.

The husband's agitated,
the wife composed.

They offer them tea.

The girl could use it
but time's pressing.

The priest's waiting
and the curfew's approaching.

But instead of getting dressed to go out
the woman asks them to be seated.

Excuse me!

You said that it was 1943?

Yes, February 1943.

They sat down at a table.

The man paces the room nervously.

They eye one another.

The woman decides to say
what the man couldn't bring himself to.

That they have to go back
on their promise.

On reflection they've found

that it is not in them to lie
before the God in whom they believe.

Who, it is true, enjoins mercy,

but forbids the bearing of false witness.

They knew the purpose of this lie

but it was irreconcilable
with their principles.

That was it.

The girl and her guardian stand up.

"Finish your tea,"
the woman says to the girl.

She takes a sip from her cup,
but lowers it on catching her guardian's eye.

Downstairs, she sees him halt
in the entrance to the building.

"It's almost curfew," the girls says.

But he goes on standing there.

Was there anyone else...

...in the apartment?

An older man,

in a wheelchair, I think,
with his back turned.

Any specific details?

The cups were good quality,
but each was different.

A green kerosene lamp
stood on the table. It was unlit.

Throughout the conversation
the man kept his hand in his pocket.

That's all in the way of details.

the motive's hard to believe.

It wouldn't have been false witness
against somebody.
