been too busy fixin' fences.

- Gee, do you have to work all the time?

- [Jim] Here's a note
from Mac, Mr. Wilson.

- The rustlers have made another raid.

Boys, come on, we're riding!

(horses galloping)

Did you see anything of them?

- Haven't seen hide or hair of 'em.

- Say, if those rustlers
don't quit makin' those raids,

they're gonna put me
outta the cattle business!

- Well, it looks as if they
got away from us this time.

- I don't know what to make of it.

It's funny too.

We followed the trail
just as the message said,

and I haven't seen them
nor the cattle either.

- The message also said that
the gang had jumped on him

and knocked him out.

Maybe Mac wasn't clear in the head

when he sent that message.

- Well, that might be possible.

- You know, maybe that
message was intended

to send us on a blind trail.

- Well, I wouldn't say that exactly,

although it does look kinda strange.

Mac was my foreman before you,

and he's been with me a long time.

I don't think he'd do anything like that.

- I hope you're right, Mr. Wilson.

(horse galloping)

- We'll take the cattle through the divide

and stampede them.

That'll get 'em across the line.

Then Rawlins will pick
'em up on the other side,

and I'll go back to the ranch.

- But Mac, why turn 'em loose?

There's a lotta money in those cattle,

and why should we let Rawlins have it all?

- You heard what the boss said.

And besides, there's more money in oil

than there is in cattle.

- How does he know there's oil there?

I'd hate to think that we did
all this work for nothing,

and let this other guy have everything.

Say, are you sure you're not
getting a cut from Rawlins?

- That, and I'll send you
where you won't need money.

play on the safe side.

- Well, I'm afraid we've
been on a fool's errand.

- We thought we had a tip on the rustlers,

where they were gonna work
again, but they got away.

- [Grant] I'm sorry to hear that.

- Oh, Dad, I do wish you'd
accept Mr. Grant's offer.

I'm so afraid of those rustlers.

They're desperate men.

- Could I speak to you alone for a
moment?

- Why, certainly. Are you
trying to buy the ranch again?

- [Grant] I'm not gonna try
anymore, I'm gonna do it.

(Grant and Mr. Wilson laughing)

- [Steve] That fella sure can talk.

- Mr. Grant's awfully nice.

He's made Dad a very
generous offer for the ranch.

I do hope he takes it.

- A generous offer?

Why, if it's worth that much to Grant,

it surely is worth that
much to your father.

- It's all right for you
to say he shouldn't sell,

but in the mean time, Dad's in danger.

- Well, now, he's always
pulled through before,

and I know that he'll
pull through this time.

(horse galloping)

- Lookin' for the cattle
rustlers, same as you,

but I found somethin'.

so I took the shortcut,
and I happened to run

right across the cattle rustlers.

- Great, gee whiz! (indistinct) Where?

- They've been cuttin' out the cattle

and ridin' 'em through the hidden valley.

Then, when they think everything's safe,

they run 'em over the divide.

- [Mr. Wilson] Did you recognize anyone?

- No, I couldn't get that close.

- You know, if they run the
cattle out through the North,

they must have a hideout
somewhere near there.

- You're right, and I'm
gonna find out where it is.

You get the boys together.

- Just a minute, Mr. Wilson.

You know, if we take a lotta men up there,

they're liable to spot
us and get outta there

before we get to 'em.

You know, I'll go up there alone

and find out where they're at,

and when I get back here, why,

we'll get the whole bunch of them.

- Oh, can't I go too?

- Not this time, Jimmy. You'd
done enough for one day.

- Now, you want to be careful.

Don't take no chances, and I'll

idea of rustlin' cattle

and not bein' paid for it.

and it means a big stake for
us if his plans work out.

from Rawlins on those cattle.

talkin' in the hideout.

sore when he finds out

we let this guy get away.

- Yeah, Tex will have a hard time

figurin' out an alibi for this one.

- Just a cowhand lookin' around, probably.

- Seems mighty funny to me.

I wonder why he was in such
of a hurry to get away.

- Why, we had a little trouble.

- Yeah, we took 'em to the divide,

but someone located this hideout.

- I caught him listenin' at the window.

I took a shot at him and missed.

- [Grant] Didn't you follow?

- Yeah, we chased him to the forks.

We had a fight and he
used his gun and got away.

- Why didn't you signal the boys?

- We did. This might help.

The man that owns this gun
is the man we're lookin' for.

He lost it in the fight, and I found it.

Hmm, pretty good.

Now, listen, if Wilson gets
wise, we've gotta work fast.

We might be able to cut him off
before he gets to the ranch.

Now, here's what we're gonna do.

You go down to the ranch ahead of me.

(bright harmonica music)

and leave that lamp alone.

- [Steve] Hold him, Jim, will ya?

- What's all the excitement?

- I gotta go and talk to Mr. Wilson.

(knocking on door)

- I bet that's Steve!

- [Steve] ls your father in, Jimmy?

- Sure, Steve.

talk to him, please.

- Did ya find anything?

- Plenty. I found the rustlers' hideout.

- Where is it?

- Down below the fork of the road.

Now, what I wanna do is
get the boys together

and clean 'em out.

- No, I'll call the sheriff.
We'll need plenty of help.

- But Mr. Wilson, that'll take time!

We've gotta move fast before
they make their getaway.

- I'll handle this, and as
long as I'm running this ranch,

I'm still boss.

- But supposin' if they get over-

- Steve, that's enough.

- Well, if he keeps that up,

he'll be lookin' for a a new job.

I wonder what they're arguin' about.

(cowboy speaking indistinctly)

- Boys to get ready to
ride at a moment's notice.

- Well, I'm tellin' you
you're doing the wrong thing!

- You carry out my orders
or get off of the ranch!

- What's the matter, Dad?

- Oh, nothing, nothing.

- Why are you so nervous?

- Oh, it's nothing at all.

(telephone ringing)

- Hello? Hello?

This is Wilson. Sheriff?

- [Rustler] Stop right where you are.

- So it's you!

- [Rustler] Not another word out of you.

- Hello? Hello, Wilson?

(telephone hook clicking)

- What's the matter?

- I just heard a shot over the phone.

- Yes, where'd it come from?

- It sounds like it come from the house.

(Jimmy groaning sadly)

- I heard this shot and saw him dead here.

- Hello, Sheriff.

- Why, Mr. Wilson gave me a binder

on this ranch this afternoon,

and I was gonna give him
the check this evening.

- Well, I was talkin' to
Mr. Wilson on the phone.

He started tellin' me
somethin', I heard a shot.

about Dad selling the ranch.
