of confidence in Stevie, and in

I went to an Irish drag show
with a couple of friends.

On stage I saw this white aura
and I thought, "yes."

Twelve years ago, I was doing a
show.

I was still Aurelio back then.

I was on stage, looking at the
audience.

And then wonderful Stevie caught
my eye.

I could tell a mile away
that he was straight.

So I didn't stand a chance.

But he was so lovely to look at.

It was a bit difficult,
it was a difficult story.

Why was it a difficult story?

Because you start doubting
yourself.
I knew her as a boy, she wasn't
a girl.

I started wondering
whether I was gay, or bi.

But all that doesn't matter,
I fell in love with a person.

I realized that Stevie fell in
love
with personality.

It didn't matter what I was.

So all of a sudden I felt,
I'm not in this on my own.

Stevie is my angel.

I was a very negative, and
jealous person.

But today, I look at life
in a positive way, and I'm
happy.

People often say
you have to be happy first

but he made me happy, and we
have
to cherish people like that.

Being Vanessa van Cartier,
a proud transgender woman

is thanks to him.

How are things? How proud are
you?

My parents had a stormy
marriage.
At some point my dad had an
affair

with his secretary, all very
cliché.

It didn't make it easy for me
to discover myself.

Normally, when you first realize
you're into boys

now,
there was some sort of barrier.

I just didn't expect my father
to do that.

Because he supports you
and is your prime role model.

But then your father betrays
your trust.

I was very sad because of this,
and we had our issues as well.

Issues? You didn't go to school.

- I was a bit of a rebel.

I wanted to be there for my mom,
but it wasn't possible.

I was sad as well,
and I was being a rebel.

At some point,
she decided to throw me out.

That was a very difficult time.

I hope she will enjoy this,
and I want to connect with her.

That's what I want to achieve.

My sister and my mom
are very important to me.

I'm really happy to be here,

I understand. How were things at
home?

How did they respond
to your outgoing gay nature?

It's very emotional. My dad
couldn't deal
with me being gay.

He said that he wanted to be
able
to walk around naked in his own
house.

My mother chose to leave him,
and said that she carried me for
9 months

Makes me cry again.

So he had to ago, and I felt
very guilty
about that initially.

When you're a young boy and your
dad talks to you like that, it's
painful.

You want your parents to love
you,
and you don't expect that.

When I said I was gay, I ran
upstairs
and sat crying in the bathroom.

And she came to see me, just a
little girl
and asked why I was crying.

- I told her she wouldn't
understand.
- And she said

it doesn't matter what you are,
I love you because I'm your
sister.

That moved me so,
and our bond has always
remained.

You want unconditional love,
and when you don't get it from
your father

but you do get it from your
mother
and sister, that's really
important.

I'm so grateful for it, and also
very proud of what she achieved.

She and mom mean everything.

I'm so proud that he is who he
is

and that mom and
me can be ourselves as well.

How long have you known each
other?

- About six years.
- We met through school.

When I was still at school in
Rotterdam,
and started drag, I was often in
clubs.

Clubs mean party favors.

After a while I went into
a negative spiral.

I was even homeless in Rotterdam
for a while, which was awful.

We were at school together,
and she really lifted me up
again.

I think without her,
I would've become a terrible
addict.

My sister is a closed book.
She's a tough girl.

She doesn't easily talk
about her feelings.

She never did.

You told me your father died.

Your father was Eric Schreurs.

I was one of his biggest fans,
I've got all his cartoons.

Always got more at Christmas,
that creativity was great.

- You made a statement on the
last runway

and that was about your dad as
well,
and about his drinking.

It was very special to combine
this.

- How did that feel?
- I was pretty overwhelmed.

I felt guilty towards
my sister for a long time.

When she was 14-15 years old, I
took
my stuff and moved to Amsterdam.

And I left her in a shitty
situation.

Years later, it made me realize

how difficult it must've been
for her

because she had to deal with my
parents'
divorce and problems at home.

I had the outfits printed
completely

- in dad's drawings.

Dad loved black and white with

I can't even remember when I
first
saw him in makeup.

He was always very good at
drawing,
and now he was doing it on his

What are the negatives for a
drag queen?

- I can see things in a negative
way.

I've been sort of depressed
over the last two years.

My energy levels were very low.

My emotions tend to flat-line a
bit.

It could be a mindfuck. But even
my
grief doesn't go very deep.

Even when I want to cry,
it's as if I'm stopping myself.

You were criticized last time
because it wasn't personal
enough.

It was a bit superficial,
according to the girls.

I might come across as if I
don't care
about the world

but I actually care too much.

When I see bad things on the
news,
it hurts and sucks away my
energy.

It's hard enough to keep myself
standing.

So it quickly becomes too much,
and then I'd rather close the
door.

One piece of advice: just be
yourself,
you're good fun

and even when you're feeling
bad,
take it with you in everything.
