Here's what we know.

Last week, a body was recovered
from the national forest.

It was identified as a young
woman named Tara Thurman,

a young lawyer who went missing
from Wallace Falls, Pennsylvani

three years ago.

A year after she disappeared,

her car was found abandoned
in a junkyard in Pittsburgh.

The blood inside the car
matched Tara's.

Her husband, Mike Thurman,
was charged with her murder.

At trial, the defence admitted
that they had had marital trouble,

but they insisted that
he didn't have an affair,

and that he didn't kill his wife.

They offered a strong
alternative suspect,

a man who was convicted of several
armed car-jackings in the county.

With no body and very little
circumstantial evidence,

the jury voted to acquit.

And now, despite Tara's body
being discovered,

the district attorney's office
issued this statement.

We already put Tara's killer on trial.

The jury didn't agree,
but that doesn't change our suspect.

We had the killer.

Did they?
Or did they have the wrong man?

That is the question we hope to answer
on this season of Recovered.

that he wanted me out of there.

There was blood found
in the drivers' seat of her car.

So maybe she was shot
in the car,

but then how did her body
end up way out here?

these threatening texts to Mike

And the texts slowed down,
they stopped in the fall,

but the Pittsburgh PD didn't
even find her car until January.

So, she was killed somewhere,
sometime,

between maybe March and January.

Maybe by a gun.

Yeah.

The prosecution said that it doesn't
matter when Mike killed Tara.

The point is he had her phone,

and he was sending threatening
texts to himself.

Don't make sense.

So, the cell phone pings
came back to two towers

that cover basically
half of Wallace Falls,

and that includes Mike's office
and his home.

Okay, remind me again
why not the girlfriend.

Right. So, she was in Ohio
when a lot of the threats happened.

The police ruled her out.
She was filing complaints, you know?

- She was scared.
- You need to find that phone.

Were you in court
during the motive evidence?

Yeah, it was pretty convincing.

Mike blew through Tara's money
once she disappeared,

which is why they said
he sent the texts.

Right. She had to be alive enough,
because they had a joint account.

But not so alive that she'd divorce him.
It was actually pretty smart.

Jury didn't buy it.

Actually, there was one big reason,
though, why he was acquitted.

Clay Burrell has been convicted
of two armed car-jackings,

and he's serving time
in Putnam Prison right now.

- Lucky coincidence?
- Or he really did kill Tara.

Just gotta find a way
to make him confess.

Maybe I should go down there,
interview him myself.

a break-in, some furniture slashed.

for a law firm, making bank.

from my sister.

in Philadelphia who was sick?

Not that I could find. I spent
weeks looking. There was nothing.

- She was already dead.

If that's true, how do you explain all
these other texts that people received?

That's not her.

Tara had a temper,
but she was never a stalker.

That text... that is the last time
Tara was alive.

move a body, you would cover it.

You would wrap it up in something

so that you wouldn't get blood
all over you. But you would leave DNA.

would be degraded.

Betsy Gray confronted Tara Thurman
at dawn on March 4th.

Tara was on her way to the gym.

Betsy jumped into her car and forced her
to drive to the national forest.

The two struggled
and Betsy shot Tara with Mike's gun.

Tara never threatened anyone.

Betsy used Tara's phone to send
those stalking messages,

to gain sympathy.

And it worked. Betsy had sent
those texts to bring Mike around.

To protect her.

After the police searched Mike's house,
Betsy hid Tara's phone there.

In case they searched hers.

She was keeping the phone
hoping for the chance to clear Mike

by sending a text proving Tara
was still alive,

from some big city like New York
at the right moment.

But she never had that chance.

Mike suddenly broke it off with her.

She never really got another
chance to get to that phone.

After a while, Betsy moved on.
She'd forgotten about the phone.

And then, they found Tara's body.

She panicked.

She broke into Mike's house to get that
phone back so she could destroy it.

And that's how we found her,

along with the medallion
that Tara had kept

to remind herself
to never stop looking for justice.

Now that Tara's real killer
has been found,

a wrongly accused man
may be able to move on with his life.

And Tara's family can find whatever
peace comes with answers.
