despite a record-breaking
101 degree heatwave over the weekend.

MALE NEWSCASTER: Everything seems to be
happening right now.

It's so 2020.

You know, we're breaking records
left and right.

Now we have a temperature difference of
60 to 70 degrees

in 24 hours across the Rockies.

A historic temperature drop
and a historic snowstorm

on the tails of a historic heatwave

and a historic outbreak of fires.

REED: Yeah, this is crazy.

We're right in the heart of
hurricane season

and we've got a snowstorm
up here in Colorado.

Despite this being this earliest snowfall
we've seen in nearly 60 years,

2020 is on track to becoming
one of the warmest years on record.

And with this, we've seen an uptick
in global natural disasters.

Record breaking brushfires
in Australia,

severe drought across Europe,

catastrophic typhoons
in Southeast Asia.

And here at home, we're in the middle of
a record breaking hurricane season.

This is the real deal now.

Just like we thought
was gonna happen...

These extreme shifts in temperature

are supplying the ingredients to create
the perfect storm.

Any major storm in the Gulf of Mexico

is a candidate to become
a major hurricane.

(BIRDS CAWING)

NEWS REPORTER: ...now,
from the west coast to the Gulf Coast,

Tropical Storm Sally is on target
to strike Tuesday. Jeff?

The storm is disorganized right now,

but it is going to strengthen
over very warm waters,

making landfall in southeast Louisiana
tomorrow night.

We expect this to become
a Cat 1 hurricane,

but it could bring with it
storm surge of a Category 3

because of the angle
that it's moving in,

piling water up against the coast.

Areas in red, 7 to 11 feet
of life-threatening storm surge.

MIKE: This is a scary situation
for the Gulf Coast.

Hurricane Sally looks like it could be a,
a major hurricane.

So we've got to get out there.

I really need to take this serious.

I used to push the envelope
in my 20s,

but I got a baby on the way,

little boy, we haven't named him yet

but I wanna name him Chase.

So I gotta be careful out there.

Hurricane Sally is going to be
a beast of a storm.

We've got life preservers,

first aid kit,

ropes...

I got gas cans...

So this room is kind of like
a hurricane museum in a way.

FEMALE NEWS REPORTER: Hurricane Sally
is threatening the Gulf Coast

and growing stronger by the minute.

MALE NEWS REPORTER 1:
Residents need to brace

for the possibility of
historic rainfall.

MALE NEWS REPORTER 2:
The storm surge will be deadly,

and officials are urging people
to get out.

REED: Sally is undergoing
rapid intensification right now.

This thing is forecast to be
a Category 2 hurricane,

but I think it's gonna
be a Category 3.

Hurricane Sally started forming
over the tropics,

fueled by warm air
and moisture rising off the ocean.

Over the past few days,

the storm clouds have been organizing
around a low pressure center,

creating a single, giant storm.

What's interesting about Sally

is that a cold front from the north

has caused this massive storm
to slow to a crawl.

Once this storm makes landfall,

we're gonna see unusually long periods
of destructive winds.

Who knows what the ceiling is
on this thing. If this comes in,

and it's almost stationary,
that would just be apocalyptic.

I'm looking forward to meeting up
with Mike up here in Biloxi,

and figuring out

what we're gonna do
with the Windy Palms Project.

I've got the subsonic
sensor on board,

so I'm gonna also be looking
for a place to deploy that.

The key is getting all of our gear
in just the right place

Once deployed, these sensors
will collect ground data directly

in the path of the storm.

That position and data is important
and valuable.

There just are not a lot of people
willing to do what we do.

(KNOCKS ON CAR)

MIKE: I made it.
REED: Hey, there he is! How's it going?

Oh, man, did that drive
two weeks ago.

REED: Yeah.

I'll show you this latest loop here.

Right now, it looks like it's making
a B-line right for Mobile Bay,

so we got a decision to make.

We have to decide do we put Gulf Shores
on the east side of the bay,

or Dauphin Island
in the west side of the bay.

It's almost a two-hour drive
to get around the bay,

and the road can easily become impassable
due to storm surge and debris.

So once we make the decision,

there's no turning back.

MIKE: (SIGHS) I'm feeling
Gulf Shores right now.

REED: You're feeling
Gulf Shores, then--

But we have to go east
for both, so...

We just gotta get to Dauphin...

look at the radar.

MIKE: All right, see you over there!

REED: We're trying to find
the strongest portion of this storm

and that's a lot more complicated

because we have to figure out
exactly where the eye is coming ashore,

and that's why
the pressure is so high for us.

MIKE: I was pretty calm
when I rolled up

and then once I met up with Reed,

now I can feel
the anxiety a little bit more. (CHUCKLES)

I wanna get a little bit more
to the right of center,

to definitely get that onshore wind.

By attaching an anemometer
to a palm tree right on the coast,

we're hoping we can give scientists

some wind readings in areas
that normally never get recorded.

Right at the last minute
these things wobble

and you can pinball back and forth
and drive yourself crazy.

Oh, this is Dauphin Island here.

Ugh.

So decisions, decisions.

So you don't want me to
get off here then?

'Cause this is our, our route
down to Dauphin Island here.

MIKE: Uh--

Man, let's go to Gulf Shores.

It's really hard to fix it
once we get there.

Yeah, no, I fully understand,
uh, we're committed now

'cause we're wasting
a lot of valuable time,

you know, and daylight hours,
so we're not going there to decide,

we go there to just find
the right palm tree and deploy it.

REED: All right, so we'll
head down there,

hopefully we'll get lucky.

This is the real deal here,
this is not a drill.

We gotta take this serious.

I'm very concerned

because of all the factors
are lining up

for this to be a,
a really dangerous situation.

I have a child on the way,

so I gotta, you know,

Constant reminder...

conditions are gonna gradually deteriorate
overnight tonight

and it's gonna be nearly impossible
to deploy Windy Palms by tomorrow morning.

so only got about another hour
to deploy here.

MIKE: We're gonna have to
find something fairly quick.

There's palm trees
but they're in people's front yard.

Windy Palms could capture
the only data point here at ground zero,

recording those peak wind gusts
that satellites can't normally measure.

REED: I'm hoping there's some
that are right on the coast.

MIKE: Man, I hope so.

It's getting dark.

Ah!

Stressful.

Phew.

Oh! What was that?

Let's, uh, check it out
over here for a minute.

It's the public beach access.

REED: Look at that.

MIKE: This is the tree.

REED: That's perfect.

I'm gonna start working on getting
the ladder down.

The idea is to utilize
Mother Nature's palm tree,

which is made of a silky material,
and when it blows in the wind,

the tree will flex and
move a little bit.

You'll see areas
where everything is destroyed,

but the palm tree is still there.

That's what makes these trees ideal
to anchor our gear.

God, this part's gonna
take a little bit.

REED: This is just the beginning,
unimpeded wind off the ocean.

This surge is coming up fast.

We're gonna have
the Gulf of Mexico up and over

this barrier island here,
and it's gonna come in like a tsunami.

Storm surge is the leading cause of death
from hurricanes.

As the storm approaches land,
its counterclockwise winds

push a wall of water
up on to the shore.

With sustained winds,
the surge will come inland,

causing mass flooding
and destruction.

All right.

MIKE: Yeah, like that.
Like, just kind of tilt it though.

(BLEEP)

Oh, man.

(BLEEP) I'm having a
hard time with this.

I can't even get this
thing off there now.

REED: The surge is coming up
pretty quickly.

(BLEEP)

MIKE: Ugh...

I don't know what happened

REED: Do you want me to try?

REED: Sometimes it just takes
a fresh set of eyes on it.

REED: This is a major success,

at least the part that we can control,

but now, whether the
hurricane impacts

the Windy Palms sensor
is up to Mother Nature.

We gotta prepare for that wall of water
that's gonna come in here...

So we've gotta find a home base.

A lot of the places
are boarded up down here

and this is gonna be
an absolute war zone

when this storm moves in.

REED: Nice! Seems to be perfect.

Definitely looks like
it can withstand a hurricane,

at the very least in the stairwells.

You guys locking up?

Is there any way we can
stay here tonight?

MIKE: That's great.

REED: Thankfully they
let us stay here,

even though it's already been
totally cleared out due the hurricane.

This place is a perfect home base.

By current trajectories,
it looks like

we'll be directly in the path
of the eye of the hurricane.

REED: Is it ocean view?
MIKE: Oh, great.

REED: Thank you!

It's also a perfect spot
to deploy the subsonic sensor.

While we want the Windy Palms to be
where the winds are highest

on the edge of the eyewall,

the ideal spot for the subsonic sensor
is to have a direct hit

and pass through the
center of the eye.

I think we're gonna get
substantial surge,

potentially three feet high,
above where it is right now,

so my plan is to bring
the subsonic sensor up

just to get it above
that storm surge.

The salt water would destroy it

and destroy all the data
that we've collected so far.

I'm gonna put this on
the balcony outside,

sheltered from the wind,

sheltered from any other noise

that will destroy the signal.

That should be good.

High tech equipment,

low tech solutions.

We gotta make sure
the air conditioning unit doesn't run,

because that could even
cloud the signal.

The subsonic sensor measures the rise
and fall of barometric pressure,

along with low frequency sound waves
emitted from a hurricane.

These two measurements combined

give us the unique fingerprint
of the hurricane.

It's an important tool

that can help us visualize
the inner workings of these storms

and figure out why they behave
the way they do.

MIKE: Looking at that,
this is the place to be.

This is the spot.

REED: It's just off shore right now.

Look at that.

Moving towards us at about
two to three miles an hour.

It doubled its size.

REED: We're gonna get battered here
for likely over 24 hours.

The most extreme, dangerous conditions
you could possibly imagine.

(WIND GUSTING)

NEWS REPORTER: Hurricane Sally

is growing stronger by the minute.

We want you to take a look at this storm
because forecasters now tell us

that Sally is intensifying so rapidly

that it could be
a dangerous Category 3 hurricane.

(SIGHS)

But yeah, this is incredible.

We're in the middle of history being made
in the U.S., this hurricane season.

This is a record-breaker.

Just one storm after another,
they just keep coming.

This has been a grind
of a season for me,

and Mike's got a kid on the way...

So...

he's worried about not only the storm
and our science mission,

but also his family.

MIKE: How are you feeling?

Okay?

Yeah? Are you feeling much movement?

Really?

Ugh.

I'm not sure what Reed had
for breakfast this morning,

but I'm gonna have
what I had for dinner last night,

if there's any left.

Little bit of ketchup left
on the rim there, and...

last French fry.

Not much of a breakfast,
but that's all right.

The main thing here is we're
in the right spot for the hurricane.

It's impossible to keep the socks dry
when you're outside in the hurricane,

but just to have
a few minutes of dryness on the feet

can go a long way for morale.

We're still hours out from the dangerous
inner core of Hurricane Sally.

What makes it dangerous
and what makes it unique

is that it's slowing down
and putting on the brakes.

The slower this storm moves,

the more wind, surge
and rain just batters the coast.

This reminds me a lot of
Hurricane Florence from last year

where it was putting on the breaks
on approach to the coastline.

The sun is rising

on scenes of devastation here.

Substantial flooding
right along the river.

Water several feet deep.

Homes inundated,

and the rain continues to fall.

Became one of the worst
natural disasters in US history.

I can definitely see
a similar thing happening.

(TEARING SOUND)

Yeah, I just ripped my only sock.

The only sock I've got, so...

Back to the Crocs.

With the Hurricane
just crawling through the Gulf,

we can only stare at computer models
for so long.

Sometimes you just need to get eyes
on the storm to see what's going on.

(WIND GUSTING)

Already some surge debris getting
washed up on this side.

Big wave, big wave just surging up!

Wow!

Water coming over the edge
of the pier over there.

See how the waves come up
and over the top of this,

another wave coming up
and over that one.

Just like a layer cake,
it keeps getting deeper and deeper

until it goes up and over the dune.

The storm surge is already coming up
well above normal tide level.

And we're expecting up to a nine foot
surge by the time the eye hits.

Major rip currents,

sweep you off your feet.

You can get pulled out to sea here,

and you will be a mile out
into that dangerous ocean

and you'll be dead in a heartbeat.

MIKE: Wow, feel that wind, Reed.

That's intense!

Up to 70, 80 miles an hour.

This is still just ahead of
the core of the hurricane.

That's the scary part.

This is gonna sit over
us for many hours,

just getting pummeled by
the extreme conditions of this hurricane.

(SIREN WAILING)

MIKE: There's some sirens
or something going off.

REED: I think they're
evacuating people.

(SIREN WAILING IN THE DISTANCE)

NEWS REPORTER:
A hurricane warning is in effect.

With danger of
life-threatening storm surge,

residents should avoid
all coastal areas

and follow evacuation instructions
from officials.

NEWS REPORTER:
A hurricane warning has been issued.

Extreme winds are expected.

(SIREN WAILING IN THE DISTANCE)

This is an extremely dangerous
and life-threatening situation.

Take action to protect your life.

MIKE: Man, I'm so hungry.

REED: Chef Boyardee,

just kinda part of the deal
when you're chasing a hurricane.

MIKE: Good carbohydrates.

Its energy, fuel in the tank.

And we're gonna need it for this grind
of a storm that's hardly even moving.

We cooked these off of our engine block
on Hurricane Isaac.

MIKE: While you're cooking
I'll keep an eye on radar,

see what the satellite looks like.

Oh, damn!

MIKE: Whoa.
REED: That is nasty!

MIKE: That's perfectly round. Wow.

REED: Yeah, it's right over us now.
MIKE: Yeah, right on top of us.

85 miles an hour, so
it's intensifying.

Gusts to 110 anticipated too.

But yeah, this is big time.

Look at it, these are tornado-like
vortices in there.

That definitely can produce
tornadic waterspouts.

Waterspouts feed off warm,
moist air from hurricanes.

This swirling mass of
condensed water vapor

can spin at speeds as high as
150 miles an hour.

And if they reach land, they can become
destructive and dangerous tornadoes.

MAN: Run! Run! Go go go! Run...

REED: Hmm...

it does smell good.

MIKE: I think what we
should do is eat

and then get going, man.

REED: Let's check and see

if Windy Palms is above
the surge height too still.

MIKE: Yeah.

MIKE: How is it?
REED: It is good.

Little highbrow for me but it's good.

NEWS REPORTER: It could bring winds
of more than 80 miles per hour.

The hurricane's outer bands
are already lashing the coast,

parts of Alabama and Mississippi

are seeing storm surge
and strong winds.

REED: Oh, look at that!

This is flash flooding,
there's a flash flood warning

right now in Gulf Shores.

This is, mostly due to rainwater.

This road's gonna be completely impassable
so we're just gonna be experiencing

these extreme conditions
for the entire night tonight,

for who knows how long.

There's some legitimate
strong winds there, you guys...

MIKE: So there it is...

it's in the perfect spot.

Onshore wind coming right
off the water.

We have the data logger box
sitting right in the top,

like an egg in a bird's nest.

This slow moving storm
could sit on us for hours

with winds over a hundred miles an hour.

It's really gonna put
the Windy Palms to the test.

Should we put one strap on it though?

REED: Yeah.

MIKE: Do we have any left?

REED: Yep, make sure you
do a double knot.

Everything is anchored in good,

MIKE: Yeah, all the anchors

I'm very confident
we could leave this here overnight

and it will record historic winds.

a legitimate surge here off the causeway!

This is happening, Mike,

It's beginning to start
really getting intense,

right with the perfect timing
of nightfall.

REED: Wind is definitely gusting now
to hurricane force.

So now we're getting surge
from two directions,

one off the causeway

and then we're gonna get surge
off the Gulf of Mexico

converging right in the middle.

This is not good out here.

MIKE: (BLEEP) Getting hit by rocks!

Ahh!

There's big rocks, there's pieces of rock
and stuff flying.

Are you getting sandblasted?

REED: Oh, yeah!

MIKE: This isn't even the eyewall.

We're nowhere near the eyewall yet.

That could be a waterspout!

That's the thing about waterspouts,

they're usually pretty short-lived.

This is the calm center of Hurricane Sally
that's slowly moving over us.

Once the other edge of
the eye reaches us

the winds will be blowing
in the opposite direction,

shifting the flow of
flood water with it,

and continuing to batter
these already weakened structures.

MIKE: Man, that was
insane. Holy crap.

So this is the building
that was right next to us.

The wind was ripping through here
and right into the hotel.

Absolutely insane.

I've always been fascinated
by hurricanes.

They're the most powerful
and violent storms on earth,

and there is still so
much more to learn.

I feel like we've only
scratched the surface.

So, it's like an astronaut
that goes to space, to explore space,

I feel like going into
the heart of a hurricane

to explore a hurricane is why
I was put on this planet.

REED: We have the strongest winds
in the front eyewall,

winds definitely gusting over
120 miles an hour,

and now here in the
middle of the eye,

uh, the wind is definitely subsiding,

just a little bit of
a breeze out here.

A lot of flooding and
debris left behind.

You know there's a lot of damage
down there,

and your heart definitely
feels for the people that live here.

NEWS REPORTER: A life-threatening

and devastating flooding emergency
is stretching along the Gulf Coast

from Florida to Alabama,

under as much as five feet of water
from Hurricane Sally.

There are flooded buildings,

ripped off roofs and more than
half a million people without power.

REED: Yeah, it's starting
to ramp up big.

MIKE: Yeah, that eyewall
is coming in now.

REED: Yeah, it's moving now.
MIKE: Phew!

we can collect more wind data
in the back eyewall.

What a disaster this is.

We're clear of the back eyewall.

Winds seem to have peaked
around 90 miles an hour on the Kestrel.

Let's get some rest until daybreak.

(BIRDS CAWING)

MIKE: First thing in the morning

after a really wild night.

We have no power.

Feel like I've been in a marathon.

REED: Gonna pull off
the subsonic data

that sampled the passage
of the entire eye of Hurricane Sally.

I'm gonna send this
to their science engineer,

and he's gonna interpret that data

and we're gonna see
exactly just how violent

those pressure pumps were
inside the eyewall.

MIKE: All right, Reed,
let's get the Windy Palms, man.

REED: All right, hopefully
it's there.

We're gonna do a damage survey,

recover Windy Palms Project

and just see
some of the impacts first hand

that this hurricane caused.

The road in here to Gulf
Shores is blocked

so we're actually trapped out here
on the island.

REED: Look at this, guys.
MIKE: Oh, yeah, definitely surge in here.

REED: Holy cow, look at this.

This just shows the power of water
that was with this storm,

how unique of a disaster it was.

Storm surge was going up
and over this road

at the peak of the hurricane,

and this massive boat got set down
right here where the water receded.

It must have been
at least a ten foot surge

to do something like that.

MIKE: We're not far from
Windy Palms here.

REED: No, we're close.

MIKE: Oh, man, it might have captured
the wind gust that did that.

REED: I bet it did.

MIKE: This is it.

-REED: It's there!
-(MIKE LAUGHS)

and still exactly how we left it,

meaning that it recorded data

inside the strongest part
of Hurricane Sally,

yet another data point that allows us
to better understand these insane storms

that are just hammering
the Gulf Coast.

MIKE: There it is...

REED: I'm excited to see
what it recorded.

MIKE: Yeah.

There she is, man, second attempt.

MIKE: Okay, got it?
REED: Yeah.

this survived?

It'll take a few days
to recover from this one, no doubt.

2020 is a time
when extremes are the norm.

The world is in the grips
of this new weather paradigm,

and we need to do all we can to decipher
where we are headed in the future.

Fire, floods...

We're in the heart of
hurricane season,

we're already
at a record-breaking pace.

We're on track to see more storms
than any previous year.

It's just that much more
motivating for us

to keep going out
and collecting data inside these storms.

Trying to better understand
these impacts,

and the dark scars
that these storms leave behind.

That's what we're trying to prevent,
as storm chasers and meteorologists.
