Young Royals portrays gay love
as genuine love

without focusing
on the sexual aspect at all.

I think that's helped
a lot of young people.

They see two young guys in love
without taking pills and having sex.

And we've shown
that we can do this in Sweden,

and touch people around the world.

In oppressive countries.

That's one of the best things
I've experienced, I think.

There is a huge recognition factor.

There are all kinds of ethnicities,
different sexualities.

Everyone gets to explore,
while we discuss real teenage issues.

People feel like shit
when they're teenagers,

and someone is tackling that subject.

Some of the reactions from viewers
that have struck a chord in me,

are older people who didn't get to fulfill

their teenage crushes,
due to the oppression they faced.

They couldn't be with the person
they were in love with at school,

but they have fulfilled that dream
through Young Royals.

It was unthinkable
when we filmed the first season

that it would become what it is.

And now we're hanging out,
and people come from all over the world

just to see the castle.

Omar and I talked a lot about this.

He claims that he knew from the start,
but I don't believe that.

I read it for the first time, and I just,
"This will 100% be big."

I just knew it.

That's why I panicked.
I really wanted the part.

When I heard about
a new youth series for Netflix,

about a prince falling in love
with a guy, I just...

I just, "How do I get in on that?"

My name is Malte Myrenberg Gårdinger

Simon was the character who started here,
but ended up there.

Hi there, my name is Omar Rudberg
and I am 5 foot 8.

He was meant to be quite a big,
robust, down-to-earth person.

Then when we ran into Omar
and he was a completely different type.

It really became like, "What..."

We had to rethink and rewrite the script

to make him a different kind of character.

Look at each other.

They moved so naturally
even though they didn't know each other.

And ahead.

And it's unusual for two guys
to be so comfortable in their bodies,

and with each other.

I knew when I saw them together
that we would work with those two.

My story was a bit different,
because I came in much later.

My name is Frida.
I'm 20 years old and I live in Stockholm.

I really hoped I would get the part.

I didn't know it was Netflix or anything.

I only knew about Sara,
and that I loved her.

I thought, "She is me. She's mine."

I like it here.

And then I didn't get it
and I got extremely upset.

But I thought, "It isn't meant to be."

"I'll just carry on
with my life here in Barcelona."

Then, three months later,
Martin Söder calls in a panic.

"Hi. What are you doing?
Can you come to Sweden?"

And now I'm here,

and it's the best decision
I've made in my life.

This is what you do
during the study scenes.

You don't just sit on your thumbs,
you write stuff, you know.

Today we're filming a scene where August,

who promised to
absolutely not talk to Wille or Simon,

can't resist asking Simon how he's doing.

So Wille ends up losing it with August

and they get into a fight
inside the library.

We've done this for so long,

and we've done three seasons now,

we know these characters incredibly well.

- Back up a few steps, Edvin?

I live with this character in a way now
that is so fascinating.

He has gotten under my skin
and will be there for a long time.

- Set!

In Royals we do a lot of improvisation

to make it feel authentic.

Because this is how you talk
when you're 16 years old.

Take down that big sign.

Omar!

I know how Simon would say things.

It's not exactly in the script,

but I know what he's trying to say.

"Okay, let's do that." Then it flows.

I could test pushing a bit more, maybe.

In season one, I mapped out
who Wilhelm was and is,

and what his dreams are, kind of thing.
And that gets bigger by and by.

I was 17 years old and Rojda came in
and kind of took me by the hand,

and showed what it means to be brave.

She created a safe environment
right from the start.

All the actors were so different
in terms of experience.

I had to gain their trust so that
they dared to open up to me as well.

There's a scene in season one
where Wille and August are peeing.

And I wanted them to connect
to each other emotionally,

but we didn't quite get there.

And I remember saying
to take a few minutes break.

Then Malte came up to me and said,

"You know, sometimes
when I'm frustrated I just scream."

I was like, "Yeah!"

Let's try it and we don't need to use it.

But that's what we used.

That was his impulse.

I really think that kind of thing
made me go,

"Wow, I can come up with something
that contributes something substantial."

But it was also a freedom
and a sense of trust,

because we were quite young,

but she still gave us the respect.

Sometimes I throw things in there.

It could be a line,
it could be a random action.

Sometimes it's like, "That's Wilhelm!"
It's pretty cool when you do that.

The last episode ever of Young Royals

A little recap.

Simon has retreated into himself
after the stone through the window.

And he has kind of accepted
these new conditions,

that he has to take a step back
to avoid danger to himself or his family.

And at the end of episode five,
they basically break up.

Meanwhile, the third years
have regained their privileges.

They will have their student dinner
and are really excited.

And August thinks that
now Sara has come back,

there's a chance for them.

And Felice has basically,
at the beginning of the episode,

started to say hi to Sara
when the others aren't looking.

Let's go.

So, I feel huge pressure to finish this

in the most wonderful and amazing,

and the most heartbreaking way possible.

Fredrika saw you with August.

- What?
- At the dinner. You were making out.

If they don't believe what I've written,
it's gonna feel tough.

And the ending is obviously
the absolutely most important point.

That they get to feel,

"Wow! I got to have an ending
for my character with this moment."

Well, I can't stop feeling
what I feel for you.

"Sara kisses him softly. A farewell kiss."

This feels more like a funeral
than the last day of school.

I had really decided that I wouldn't
be moved, get nostalgic or start crying.

But when I hear their voices

read the story
that we've fought so hard to get to tell...

At that point, I was very moved.

It was an immediate reaction
to everything we've been through.

I think it's a damned dignified ending.

It feels good for everyone, I think.

One thing I really like
about this whole ending,

is how he talks to his mom
about not having had a choice.

And it says so much about...

people who are just are.

They don't choose, they just are...

I don't know,
it felt like it said so much more

than he didn't wanna be a prince,
but much broader than that.

That's where we've been heading all along.

It's nice with the last gaze,

that he looks away in the end.

I was wondering
if we need to do something else.

Finish in a way that...

We could end on him
looking into the camera.

There's something about leaving things...

And be with them in the moment.

We've created a series where many
have invested a lot in the characters.

In this season a lot of things happen
that challenge who they really are,

and some characters lose
the stamp of approval they've had.

We leave them in a place that's calm.

It sounds like they're dying,
but, they can go in peace.

And the saddest one to leave is August.

with how we did it in season one,

it's two completely different things.

The first time was really weird.
We didn't know each other that well.

We were just getting to know each other.

Then we have to enter into a world
where we're intimate with each other.

We were both really nervous.
It was scary and awkward.

I almost had an adrenaline attack
the first time we were standing there

and we were gonna kiss for the first time.

It was so damn weird.

But it got easier and easier.

Season two was pretty tough,
'cause we had done it once.

Then a long time passed
and we became great friends.

And then we had to
go back to being intimate,

and we had to create
that special chemistry again.

And that was strange,
because we were really pals.

But in season three it feels damn chill.
