I think I know where it is.

- What is this, a holdup?

- In a manner of speaking.

Stick 'em up.

Your father was
looking for this.

- If you're looking
for the matching socks,

I've got those on, too.

- Here's your sweater.

It was down at the drive-in,
having a hamburger.

- [laughs] Thanks a lot.

- What do you want your
sweater for, anyway?

- Gonna play golf.

- Well, you can't play
golf this afternoon.

You promised you'd go to the
women's club meeting with me.

- You mean to say that's today?

- Yes, of course it is.

- Oh, Harriet.

In the first place,
it's the silliest thing

I ever heard of
in my life, trying

to restore some broken
down, old, haunted house.

- Merhoff Mansion is not a
broken down, old, haunted

house.

It's an historic landmark.

Entwistle Merhoff
was born there,

and he built the first
trolley line in town.

- [laughs] Well, good for him.

We're using buses nowadays.

That Ladies Auxiliary
of yours can

think of the darndest reasons
for stealing money from people.

- It's for a worthy
cause, and we're only

asking $1 from each person.

- Well, then there's no reason
for my going down there.

Here, I'll give you $1.

Here, you just toss in $1 for
me, and I'll go play golf.

- Oh, no, you don't.

You're coming with me.

- What time is the meeting?

- You've just got
time to wash the car.

- Oh, I'm not going
to wash the car.

I'm sure I don't
have time for that.

Besides, I'm too lazy.

- Say, here's an idea-- why
don't you take it down to that

new car wash place?

They'll do it in five minutes.

- Yeah, and they'll probably
do a messy job, too.

- No, I understand they
do a beautiful job.

They say it's like a
regular carnival down there.

They serve free
Cokes and hot dogs.

- Well, who needs 'em?

You pay for it one
way or another.

- Oh, I think it's all part of
the advertising to get started.

They have music going
and a lot of cute girls

in sweaters and shorts--

You know, sort of hostesses.

- Oh?

Well, is it far from here?

- No, it's just
about four blocks,

on Highland and Park Street.

- Hmm.

Well, maybe I will
give it a try.

I haven't had a
hot dog in years.

- Welcome to the Happy
Car Auto Wash, sir.

Have a cigar.
- Oh, thank you very much.

I'll smoke it later.

- Barbara, take care of the
gentleman, will you, please?

- Hot dog, sir?

- Yeah, I think I
will, thank you.

- Would you like a Coke, sir?

- Yeah, I might as
well go all the way.

It's quite a turnout
you've got here.

- Yes, isn't it exciting?

- I think I'll have one
of those, little lady.

- Certainly, sir.

- Quite a show they've got here.

- Oh, yeah, sure is.

- My name's Willoughby,
Joshua Willoughby.

- Well, how do you do, sir?

My name is Nelson.

Oh, Judge Willoughby?

- As of this moment,
that's correct, neighbor.

And if the good people
of this community

see fit to return me
to office, then it'll

be Judge again next year.

[laughs]

- Oh, that's right,
the local elections

come up in a couple
of weeks, don't they?

- That's right, neighbor.

- [laughs]

- Which one of you
gentlemen was first?

- Oh, I believe Judge
Willoughby drove in first.

- Oh, no, take Mr.
Nelson's car first.

- No, no, no, no, Judge--

- Oh, please, Mr.
Nelson, I insist.

- Well, after all,
you're the judge.

[laughter]

- Your cars will come out
the other side, gentlemen.

- Well, thanks a lot.

- Isn't this a
magnificent example

of free American enterprise?

- It sure is.

[music playing]

- You know, the man who
owns this place started

with nothing but a bucket
of soap suds and a brush?

Look what he's got today.

- Yeah, it's a terrific layout.

- Yes, sir, this is only one of
many new enterprises growing up

in our thriving community.

You heard about
the new fish market

they're opening
on Fourth Street?

- No, I don't believe I have.

- Man started with nothing
but a fishing rod and an idea.

You know, it makes me
both proud and humble

to know that I was
elected to office

by those hardworking,
far-sighted voters who

were kind enough to
bestow on me their faith

and their confidence; those
public-spirited citizens who

exercised their great
tradition of free suffrage

and allowed me to be a public
servant in our fair community.

Believe me, neighbor--

- Pardon me, Judge, I think my
car is ready right over here.

- Oh, yes.

- Oh, is this your car, sir?

- Well yes, it is.

[laughs] You mean everybody
who gets his car washed

gets this kind of treatment?

- Oh, no, yours
is a special car.

Yours is the 1,000th car that's
been washed here since we

opened last Saturday.

- Oh, well, how about that?

Well, thank you very much--

- Just a moment, sir.

I didn't give you your prize.

Here it is-- a crisp $50 bill.

- Well, isn't that nice?

Oh, no, no, wait a
minute-- this rightfully

belongs to Judge Willoughby
here because I took his turn.

No, Judge, your car was first.

This belongs to you.

- Please, Mr. Nelson, please, I
appreciate your sportsmanship,

but that belongs to you.

It's all fair and legal.

And I speak from years of
experience on the bench.

- Oh.

Gee, that's very
generous of you.

- No more generous than the
people of this fair community

have been to me.

And I hope that generosity
continues when you all come

to the polls next election day.

- Yeah, that's a good idea.

memories of Merhoff Mansion.

Quiet, everybody.

- Madam Chairman,
ladies and gentlemen,

I think there's something
you should all know.

I was down at the car
wash when Mr. Nelson won

that $50 less than an hour ago.

Now, he could have spent
it foolishly, selfishly.

He could have done whatever
his conscience dictated.

But what did he do with it?

He donated it to this
worthy civic project.

That's the kind
of generosity that

makes me proud to serve the
members of this community.

Now, this is not in the
nature of a campaign speech.

But if the people
of this community

see fit to re-elect me, I
will be proud to serve them.

The point I want to stress
is, it's not important

who you vote for.

The important thing is
that you get out and vote.

You'll find my name on the
second row on the ballot.

And so in conclusion, I'd like
to say that it is a privilege

to serve the members of this
fair community, a community

that boasts such generous,
unselfish, civic-minded

citizens as Mr. Ozzie Nelson.

So let's give him
three rousing cheers.

They took my money
under false pretenses.

whole thing was a mistake.

- Well, the people
didn't know that.

- Well, I didn't get
a chance to tell 'em.

- Well, you had plenty of
time after the judge's speech.

You stood there for 15
minutes taking bows.

- Well, I couldn't make myself
heard with all that cheering

and all that applauding.

- Well, you'll just have to
figure it this way, dear--

After all, you made a
contribution to a worthy cause.

- Worthy cause?

Some worthy cause-- to preserve
a broken down, old house just

because the guy who built it
happened to run the trolley

cars through town?

And I remember those

- Well, everywhere
I go, people are

saying how generous Pop
is with that big donation.

How come you gave them the $50?

- It was a worthy cause.

- It was a mistake.

- I don't know, a guy
down at the malt shop

said I could have all
the credit I want.

- Boy, that's great.

The mayor wants to talk to me.

- How about that?

- Oh, yes.

it would be a shame.

don't know as I should.

chairman of the committee.

- Yes?

Oh, well, I really don't
know how he feels about it.

the president of the bank,

for instance.

Well, that's fine.

and the president of the bank

- Because he can tell
one bill from another.

I donated to the Women's Club.

darndest thing happened.

- Yes, I just heard
you telling David.

Evidently, somebody
else donated the $50.

- Yeah, isn't this terrible?

And I had been taking
all the bows for it.

- Well, not only that,
you've been walking around

with somebody else's
$50 in your pocket.

- Oh, $48.90.

- Pop, there's one thing
I don't understand.

What happened to the
$5 you were going

to give me instead of the $50
you put in my wallet by mistake

that the Women's
Club returned to you?

- Oh, I'll tell you
what happened, Dave.

While I was out getting
the contributions,

I ran into this
friend of mine who was

selling some raffle tickets.

It was a very worthy cause--

chances on a refrigerator.

So I more or less invested
your money, you might say.

So here you are, son.

Judge, but really, I couldn't.

- Well, I don't mean the
head campaign manager.

My brother-in-law
usually handles that job.

I mean sort of an assistant.

- Oh.

Well, the only thing,
though, is-- see,

I'm more or less committed
to follow through

on this Women's Club thing.

- Yes, the situation has taken
a rather surprising turn.

- Surprising turn.

- Oh, I'm sure they're
off to a flying start.

Your $50 donation
took care of that.

- Well, see, in a true sense,
it wasn't a legitimate donation.

It was more on the nature
of, you might say, a mistake.

- [chuckles] Don't
you believe it.

In fact, if you folks
won't tell anybody,

I'll let you in on a secret.

I put a $50 bill in there, too.

- You did?

- But why?

- Well, you see, I'm
sort of a windy old bird.

You know, always making
speeches, writing letters

to the editor.

Every once in a while, I
like to do something nice

and just not say
anything about it.

But here I go spoiling
it all by telling you.

- No, not at all.

- Well, I'm glad you did.

As a matter of
fact, it turns out

that I only thought
I'd put $50 in.

And furthermore, the committee
insisted I take it back.

So here, this $50
rightfully belongs to you.

- Now, how about that?

Say, they only gave you $48.

- Oh, pardon me.

- Really, I don't
want to take this.

satisfaction of donating

of the community.

Is that right, Judge?

- That's right, Mrs. Nelson.

- And you want to
keep it a secret?

- Exactly.

- Now, you say your
brother-in-law is your campaign

manager.

- Has been for
the past 25 years.

Fine, upstanding young
man, salt of the Earth.

- Good.

Well, then may I suggest
that you turn this $50 over

to your brother-in-law--
pledging him to secrecy,

of course--

to be used as a donation
to your campaign fund?

It most certainly
would be a benefit

to our community to have
you re-elected to office.

- My dear lady, what
can I say in the face

of such charm, such
beauty, such noble spirit

and such unquestionable logic?

I accept the nomination--
er, I mean the $50.
