- There's only
one catch, though.

Somebody will have to go out to
the garage and get some wood.

- Hey, I got an idea, Pop.

Why don't you go out and
get the firewood, and David

will light the fire?

- What are you going to do?

- I'm going to get
the marshmallows.

- Oh, Ricky.

- You want a box or something
to put those ashes in, Pop?

- No, that's all right.

I'll just push 'em down here.

- Hey, where's that go, anyway?
- I don't know.

But I've been brushing ashes
down here for the last 20

years, ever since we
first bought the house,

and nobody's complained yet.

- Come on, will you, Rick?

By the time we get
the fire built,

it'll be time to go to bed.

- OK, OK.

- Ozzie?

- Yeah, I'm here.

- Say, I've looked
everywhere and I

can't seem to find a button
to match these on your coat.

- Oh.

- Where'd you get them?

- Oh, I've had those for years.

Those are Rutgers buttons.

You see the college seal there?

- Oh, I don't know where I'll
ever find one to match them.

I guess I'll have to
sew all new buttons on.

- Oh, that's a shame.

- What are you doing,
building a fire?

- Oh, yeah, the boys went
out back to get some wood.

I'm just cleaning
up the ashes here.

- I always take
the ashes outside.

- Oh, no, don't do that.

Just brush 'em down
that little hole.

That's what it's for.

[music playing]

- Oh, well, don't strain
yourself, Hercules.

- We need some small ones
to get the fire started.

- Well, let's get some big ones.

- Can I help it if I'm delicate?

- Are you sure you're supposed
to put the ashes down there?

- Well, sure.

- Well, I don't know.

I just never knew
where it led to,

and it always seemed sort
of unsanitary or something.

- Uh, what did you
think it was for,

to hide my birthday present?

- Your birthday present?

What's that got to do with it?

- Oh, I don't know.

I guess maybe it's
just on my mind.

You know, the fact
that my birthday

is the day after tomorrow.

- It is?

- Oh, come on,
you remembered it.

- I did?

- Well, you know you did.

- Well, did you find a
present down the hole here?

- No.

- Well, then how do know?

Maybe I forgot about it.

- No, you never
forget my birthday.

- Well, if you're so sure,
what are you worried about?

- Come on, Harriet.

Before I push all the
ashes down the hole,

hide my present there?

- Maybe I did and
maybe I didn't.

- Ridiculous.

- Why do you always say that
when you're losing an argument?

- Well, it's a good
thing I looked.

Just what I needed, a beautiful
piece of charred wood.

- Oh, now you've
spoiled everything.

It was supposed
to be a surprise.

[music playing]

- You're lucky you've got
such a good memory, Harriet.

I always forget Joe's
birthday, and it's a shame.

He's so thoughtful.

- Oh, isn't that nice.

- I think so.

Come to think of it, though,
he did forget my birthday last

year...

And our anniversary,
the big dope.

- I have a wonderful system for
remembering Ozzie's birthday.

He always reminds me.

- Oh, that's a good system.

- Well, it works out even.

I remind him when
it's my birthday.

- That's a good idea.

- Ozzie?

Ozzie?

I guess he's not home.

- What are you looking for?

- A place to hide this present.

It's not easy.

He knows most of my
favorite hiding places.

- Well, what about
behind the couch?

- Oh, no.

That's his hiding place.

Look, this has been here
since last Christmas.

He forgot to give it to me.

[doorbell rings]

- Maybe that's Ozzie.
- Oh, no.

He'd walk right in.

Of course, he could
think the door's locked.

- Yeah, I'd better hide
the present, just in case.

[doorbell rings]

- Mrs. Nelson?

- Yes.

- I'm sorry to trouble you.

My name is Turner.

I'm an attorney.

I represent the Ferguson estate.
- Oh.

- Mr. Ferguson's the man
who built this house.

He was the original owner.
- Oh, yes.

I've heard that.
Won't you come in?

And let me take
your hat and coat.

- Oh, thank you.

- Mrs. Randolph,
this is Mr. Turner.

- How do you do?

- How do you do.

- Won't you sit down?

- Oh, thank you.

- Oh, no, not yet.

I'm terribly sorry.

I was trying to hide this.

- It's a book I bought my
husband for his birthday.

- Oh, isn't that nice.

- Won't you sit down?

- Oh, may I now?

- Oh, I'm sorry.

That's Ricky's flashlight.

He wondered what
happened to that.

- Well, now I'll get right
to the point, Mrs. Nelson,

so I won't waste too
much of your time.

- Oh, that's all right.

We weren't doing
anything important.

- Well, as you probably
know, Mr. Ferguson

died about 20 years ago.

But certain valuable items
referred to in the will

have never shown up.

- Oh, really?

What sort of items?

- We're not sure.

They weren't mentioned
specifically,

but we do know that he
considered them quite valuable.

You see, the will was
rather a strange document.

Mr. Ferguson drew it up himself.

He didn't trust
attorneys or banks.

In fact, he kept most
everything in strongboxes

which he hid in various places.

- I take it he was
rather eccentric.

- Well, I don't think
that quite describes him.

He was a more of a--

- An oddball?

- Well, perhaps.

I would say a crackpot.

- Did he have any legal heirs?

- Well, he left everything to
his housekeeper and his best

friend.

- Oh, and are they the ones
who are interested in the case?

- No, no, no.

They both died some years ago.

- Did they leave any children?

- No, no.

The housekeeper
was never married,

and the best friend
turned out to be

an Airedale dog who died
without leaving a will,

as far as we know.

- Well, that's very interesting.

- Yes, it's rather fascinating.

In fact, that's my only
reason for stopping by.

We've recently come across
some information that

would lead us to
believe that there's

a strongbox hidden somewhere in
a secret panel in this house.

- Oh, for goodness sake.

- How about that?

What does the box contain?

- We're not sure.

He was quite a collector.

It could be jade or
diamonds or pearls.

It could be most anything.

Oh, do you mind if
I smoke my pipe?

- Oh, no.

- I wish you would.

Give us sort of a
Scotland Yard effect.

- Now, here's our problem.

Unfortunately, we
don't seem to be

able to locate the original
plans of the house.

It was built about 50
years ago, you know.

- Oh, yes, I know.

It's one of the first
houses in the neighborhood.

Do you have any idea where
this secret panel is located?

- Oh, I bet I know.

I was reading this
book the other day,

"The Case of the Missing Head."

And they had a secret panel,
and it was in the bookcase.

- Oh, really?

- Where do you
suppose this one is?

- Well, it's supposed
to be in the bookcase.

- Oh, don't open it.

There's a shrunken
head in there.

Well, there was in the book.

- To the best of my knowledge,
I don't believe Mr. Ferguson

collected shrunken heads.

Let's have a look at
the other bookcase here.

- Ooh.

- How about that?

I never knew that was there.

- Oh, it's empty.

- Oh, darn.

- Oh, what a shame.

- Ah, well.

- Mr. Turner.

- Just in case there's
another secret panel

and we should find a strong
box with valuables in it,

who would it belong to?

- Well, I should say, in the
absence of the lawful owner,

And incidentally, you've

- Oh, really?

- Well, you've provided me with
a husband-proof hiding place

for birthday gifts.

late for dinner

a couple of times last week?

- That's right, I forgot
to mention that to him.

Well, he seems to think I have
a pretty good case without that.

- Uh, do I get custody of the
boys or the television set?

- I'll be sporting about it.

- Come on, what did
the man really want?

- Isn't there anything
else on your conscience

besides being late for dinner?

- Well, there was that
lipstick you found on my collar

about a month ago.

In fact, I think I still have
a lab report around somewhere.

- Come on, Harriet, what
did this Mr., uh, Turner,

what did he really want?

- Well, did you ever
hear of a Mr. Ferguson?

- Well, sure.

He was the man that
built this house.

We bought it from him.

- Well, the lawyer was
looking for a strong box.

He seems to think
Mr. Ferguson had it

hidden in the house somewhere.

- Mr. Ferguson
died 15 years ago.

- Twenty.

- Harriet, what did the
attorney really want?

- I just told you.

- OK, I'll take the washing
machine, the motion picture

projector, and the silver.

- Where you taking 'em, Pop?

- Well, I'm not actually
taking them anywhere, Dave.

Your mother and I
have just been having

a frustrating discussion.

- If anybody needs
a lawyer, there

was one here this afternoon.

- Oh, did you hear
about this guy, too?

- Yeah, Chubby Randolph
told me about him.

His mother was here.
- Well, what did he want?

The lawyer, I mean.

- It was something about a
secret panel in the house

someplace, with a lot of
jewels in it or something.

- Harriet, why didn't
you tell me about this?

- I'll take the dishes, the
vacuum cleaner, the movie

camera, and the boys.

- You can't have
the movie camera.

You gave it to me
for Father's Day.

this hidden panel stuff?

- I'll take the television
set, the electric razor,

and Pop's new cashmere sweater.

- Hey, I ought to have
Pop's new cashmere sweater.

I've been wearin' it all month.

- Is this on the level?
- Certainly it is.

The lawyer said there might
even be jade or diamonds hidden

around here someplace.

- Well, how about this?

- Hey, wait a minute.

I thought everybody was kidding.

- So did I. Come on, let's
start tearin' the house apart.

- Wait a minute!

Hold everything, fellas.

Look, in the first place, this
is probably just a silly rumor.

In the second place, we're not
going to tear the house apart.

Least not until after dinner.

- If there's anything
valuable hidden in this house,

it's my guess it's right down
here in the cellar someplace.

- Well, how about
up in the attic?

- There's nothing up there.

I was just there.

I looked all over the place.

- Well, if there's a
secret panel in this house,

it sure must be
hidden pretty well.

We'd have come
across it years ago.

- Hey, you guys, come here.

I think I found a wall safe.

- Wall safe.

That's a fuse box.

- Hey, boys, help me take
these pictures down, huh?

There's something behind here.

[music playing]

- Hey, how about this?

I've never seen this before.

- Can you open it, Pop?

- [GRUNTING] I don't think so.

Uh, Dave, give me
that small crowbar.

[grunt]

[crack]

[crash]

It's a passageway here.

Dave, get me the
ladder, will ya?

- [VOICEOVER] "She
was terrified.

An eerie silence
hung over the room,

covering it like a shroud.

Suddenly, she was aware
of another living present.

Reluctantly, almost
painfully, she

looked toward the fireplace.

There it was, a human head
emerging from the floor."

[screams]

[clunk]

- Hey, this is me!

What are you doin'?!

- Well, why don't you
come up the stairs?

- Well, I was looking
for the secret panel

and I thought I'd found it.

[music playing]

- Where's it lead to, Pop?

- [WEARILY] The fireplace
in the living room.

- Hey, how about that?

- Hey, don't stick your
head up there, Rick.

Your mother will hit
you with a flashlight.

Somewhere in this house
is a secret hiding place

containing a strongbox.

- Oh, well, thank
goodness that's finished.

If I ever start another one
of those, stop me, will you?

- I'm not very sleepy.

I think I'll go downstairs
and read a while.

- Well, read that, you'll
never get to sleep.

- Oh, well, no, there's
a book down there

I'd kind of like
to browse through.

Wonder if this money
or whatever it is

would belong to us
even if we did find it?

- Well, yes, according
to Mr. Turner,

it'd be a case of
finders keepers.

[knocking]

What are you doing?

- I'm just testing this wall.

[knocking]

Does that have a
hollow sound to you?

- Well, most walls do.

- Oh, no, listen.

[knocking]

- Hey, Pop, there's somebody
knockin' at the front door.

- Oh, that's me.

- Should I go down
and let you in?

- I'm sorry, Rick.

I'm just testing here.

What was that?

- It's me, Pop.

- Oh, I'm sorry, Dave.

- [VOICEOVER] "He stood
in the middle of the room

and looked around.

There was a flash of lightning
and a crack of thunder.

The door opened and she came in.

He couldn't believe his eyes.

She didn't have any--

She didn't notice Barstow as
she moved over to the fireplace.

She ran her fingers over the
bricks and removed two of them,

reached inside, and pulled
out a small strongbox,

then replaced the bricks
and hurried out of the room.

'Fireplace,' Barstow
said to himself.

'Why didn't I think of that?'"

- What?

- Where are the loose
bricks in our fireplace?

Well, now, listen carefully.

This is very important.

When we first moved
into this house,

there were some loose
bricks in the fireplace.

- Oh, they were
cemented up years ago.

- Do you know who did the job?

- Mr. Johnson, I think.

- Oh, do you think
we could reach him?

- Now?

I wouldn't wake anybody up
at this hour of the night.

[repeated thudding]

- I got his birthday

And I was thinking, why don't
we put all this presents

on the table and then he
could open them at breakfast?

- Oh, well that's a good idea.
I'll get mine.

Wow, that's neat, Mom.

- Mr. Turner, the
lawyer, showed it to me.

the one Pop uses

for his Christmas presents.

- Yeah, this might be the place.

Looks like somebody's done some
repair work on these bricks.

- Well, do you want to get the
hammer and chisel and knock

'em out of there?

- Well, OK.

- Well, there's a

- Harriet!

- What's the matter, Pop?

- Don't get excited, Ricky.

- Wonder what's in it?

- Oh, almost anything.

The lawyer said
that Mr. Ferguson

Here we practically
tore the house apart

for a tin box full of junk.

- Well, we had a
lot of excitement.

- Yeah, I thought
it was a lot of fun.

all your buttons, Mr. Nelson.

- Your birthday breakfast
was a little late, dear.

I hope you enjoyed it, though.

- Oh yeah, it was fine.

- You get your cake tonight.

- Oh, I'm going to

- Gee, you didn't
eat very much, Pop.

- Well, to be frank with you,
Dave, I wasn't very hungry.

See, I was up kind of
late last night, reading.

And then I made myself
a little sandwich.

- I found the plate.

- Did the sandwich give you the
idea about the fireplace, Pop?

- No, I think it was the book.

- Here, open your presents.

- Oh, presents and everything.

- That's from me.

- I bet this one's is a book.

- I hope you like it.

They said down at the
bookstore it was very good.

- "Hello, Mr. Barstow."

- Aren't you going to
open our present, Pop?

- Oh, oh, yeah, sure.

Hey, just what I needed,
a cashmere sweater.

Gee, thanks, boys.

- Now you'll have
one I can borrow.

- Hey, this is quite a book.

- Oh, the pages must
be stuck together.

- Ooh, I wonder

in here about a strongbox

being hidden behind some
bricks in a fireplace.

- Hey, that's just like the
idea you got last night, Pop.

- Yes, and I've got an idea
where you got that idea.

But I don't know how
you got it unless you

know about a certain secret
panel in the bookcase.

- Well, if I know about it,
it's not a secret anymore.

- This sure has been an exciting
birthday for you, huh, Pop?

- Wait a minute.
It isn't over yet.

I've got another
present for you.

I finally got a button
for your jacket.

- Oh.

Yeah, where did you
find the Rutgers button?

- Right where it's been
for the last 20 years,

in our fireplace.

- Our fireplace?

- Right in Mr.
Ferguson's strongbox.

Evidently you two crackpots
went to the same college.

- [SINGING] Happy

- Oh, remember you said that.
