I've been trying
to figure out what

to get Ozzie for his birthday.

It's so difficult trying to
find a present for a man.

- Well, Joe's such
a problem anyway.

I don't want to get
him something cheap,

and yet I don't want to get
him something expensive.

We can't afford it.

- I wish I could think of
something unusual to get

for Ozzie this year.

You know, a real surprise.

- You ever thought of
getting him a wedding ring?

- A wedding ring?
- Yes.

I gave Joe one for his birthday,
and he's crazy about it.

A lot of men are
wearing them nowadays.

I think they look very smart.

- Well, certainly would
be an unusual gift.

- You can get matching
sets made, you know?

They make a
duplicate from yours.

- Oh.

You know, Ozzie might like that.

He bought us matching sweaters
when we were first married.

- You mean the same color?

- I think the wedding
ring idea might be OK.

- Well, I'm going right
past the jewelers.

stop and find out about it.

- In the kitchen!

- Ricky and I have been
having a little discussion.

We were wondering what to
get Pop for his birthday.

- Oh, I'm sure he'd like
anything you get for him.

- I'd like to get
something real special.

- Why don't you?

- I have a certain
limit I can't go over.

- What's the limit?

- Money.

- I'm sure your father will
be very happy with anything

you guys give him.

What do you do with
all your money, anyway?

- I spend it foolishly.

- Oh, in what way?

- Well, mostly on girls.

They all like ice cream sodas,
thick malts, and hamburgers.

- Well, I don't
think a boy your age

should be expected to treat
the girls all the time.

- Oh, I know that.

- Well, then why do you do it?

- I don't know, Mom.

- What are you getting
to Pop for his birthday?

- Well, I wanted to
keep it a surprise.

- Well, I honestly think
I've reached the age where

I can keep a secret.

- OK, if you promise

I'm going to get
him a wedding ring.

- Well, wasn't

Here I thought you and
Pop were already married.

- I'm sure we are, but it used
to be an old-fashioned custom

for men to wear wedding rings,
and now it's coming back

- I thought that was the idea.

One of my girlfriends wants

wrong with it.

I just think it looks kind
of strange, sort of silly.

- You say yourself you saw
Joe Randolph wearing his ring,

so evidently he doesn't
think it's silly.

- Clara gave it to him.

Maybe he likes to wear it.

It doesn't make any difference
to me one way or another.

Besides, why are you so
interested in Joe Randolph's

wedding ring?

- Well, who said I was?

- Well, you seem to be.

Gee, let's not start
an argument about it.

- I have no intention of
getting into an argument.

- It's just that I don't
think it's right for you

to say a thing is silly
simply because it's

a little unusual and modern.

- How did we ever get
involved in this thing

in the first place?

- There are thousands of
men who wear wedding rings.

I don't see how you
can say it's silly.

I said it's silly for you
and me to get involved

in an argument over something
that doesn't concern us

in the least.

- I wouldn't say

how many years.

If you had suggested we
have a double-ring ceremony

at the time we were married, I
would have said, fine, swell.

- Well, naturally I
would, or at least we

could have argued
it out at that time.

If you had given

no doubt I would have worn it
and been very happy about it.

Is that new perfume
you're wearing?

- Yes, it is.

I'm glad you like it.

Kind of smells like maple syrup.

- Well, if you
like it that much,

- A little while ago, when you

See, Harriet and I got to
discussing wedding rings

for men.

When she found out I didn't
exactly like the idea,

she decided to burn me
up by not wearing hers

to the party tonight.

- And it looks
like she succeeded.

- What I can't figure
out is what the heck

is she trying to prove anyway?

- Oh, Oz, I wouldn't
worry about it.

She'll put it back
on again soon enough

when some of those wolves
start pestering her.

- Oh, I wouldn't count on that.

Gee, we know just about
everybody here at the dance,

and they're all nice people.

- Say, wait a minute.

I've got a wonderful idea.

- That's what I'm looking for.
Let's have it.

- There's a friend of mine
here at the dance tonight.

He's from out of town.
Haven't seen him for years.

A very clever guy
at impersonations

of practical jokes
and stuff like that.

Now, see what you
think of this idea.

- Wait a minute, I'm
way ahead of you.

He makes believe he's a wolf
and starts pestering Harriet.

- Exactly.

And she comes rushing
back to you and promises

never to take her
wedding ring off again.

- That's a terrific
idea, Thorny.

By golly, I hate to admit it,
but sometimes, you amaze me.

- Thanks, Oz.

You know, frankly,
sometimes, I amaze myself.

- Oh, hi, Paul.

I was wondering where you were.

- Nice dance, isn't it?

- Yes, I guess just
about everybody in town's

And here's my husband.

- Apparently, I have no choice.

- No, I took it down there so
they could make one exactly

I got a ridiculous idea that
it might make a nice birthday

gift.

That was before I

first thing Monday morning

and tell him I changed my mind.

- Well, why didn't

- Well, at first, I didn't
want to spoil the surprise,

and then the more I thought of
it, the sillier the whole idea

sounded.

- Harriet?

- That's going to be the nicest
birthday present I've ever

had in my whole life.

over that awful Charlie

Brown at the dance
tonight and then

pretended you didn't know me?

- Oh, I really am.

It was an awful, dirty trick.

that phony Southern gal

Of all the broken
down Southern accents.

- What Southern gal?

- That Susie Bell or
whatever her name is.

- What are you talking about?

- Now, wait a minute.

What is this?

- You mean you think
I sent over a girl

because you sent over that guy?

- Holy smokes.

- What's the matter?

What happened?

- Well, Harriet, there's
been a terrible mistake!

The girl, I said I'd meet her.

She's probably waiting and
in a strapless evening gown

at Late hatchipookoo!

- Well, what is she
waiting out there for?

- Well, not what.

It's who.

It's me!

- She's waiting there for you?

- Well, you see, I was
sure you sent her over

to play a trick on me,
the same as I did on you,

so I went along with
the gag and I told her

I'd meet her out at
the lake at 2 o'clock.

- Oh, Ozzie, that's
about 10 miles out.

It's practically wilderness.

It'll be freezing at 2 o'clock.

- Well, gee, what do
you think I ought to do?

- Well, I know
it's a long drive,

but why don't you
go out and get her?

And I'll tell you what I'll do.

I'll make some sandwiches, and
you can bring her back here

with you and we can
explain the whole thing.

- Oh, gee, I don't know.

Do you really think so?

- Of course I do.

- Well, OK, I won't be long.

- Well, don't forget your coat.

- Oh.

- You can come out
now, Susie Bell.

[chuckles]

- Oh, Harriet, I'm
surprised at you.

What an act.

- Well, what about yourself?

That must have been some
Southern accent you put on,

Susie Bell, you all.

- OK, honey child, but don't
you think it's a little cruel

of you to send your poor
husband on a 10-mile drive at 2

o'clock in the morning?

- Oh, Susie, you don't think I'd
do a thing like that, do you?

He'll get just as
far as the garage.

I've got the keys to
the car right here.

I just took them out
of his coat pocket.

- Oh, Harriet, will
you please go to sleep?

It's practically daylight.

- Well, I don't want to go to
sleep when you're mad at me.

- Of course not.

Why should I be?

An old school chum of yours
comes to town unexpectedly,

and you play a very funny
joke on your husband.

Everybody gets a big laugh.

It's very funny.

Now go to sleep.

- Honestly, dear, I've
told you 100 times.

How was I to know you had an
extra set of keys to the car?
