in the old Hoboken. It was tough.

I was an altar boy myself.

I learned
you have to have faith in people.

That really gave me an inner feeling
to be a good cop.

- [camera shutter clicks]
- Initially, I was in narcotics.

Worked deep undercover operations.

If you go deep undercover,

you're hanging out with them,
eating with them, drinking with them.

You're meeting their families.

But once it's over,
you gotta go back to reality.

Be honest with you,
I had a lot of guilty feelings

after I got done working undercover.

It was actually the betrayal.

I just couldn't do that to people.

So I called the superintendent.

And I says, "I gotta get out of here.
I want to transfer."

He goes, "Where do you want to go?
You can go anywhere you want."

I said, "I want to go to the Meadowlands."

[crowd chanting] J-E-T-S!

Jets! Jets! Jets!

[Aramini] My nickname
was Mayor of the Meadowlands.

I dealt with security at the stadium.

We had the football games.

The fans getting drunk.

But in my 35-year tenure down there,
never had, really, any problems.

Until the day of the Spygate.

[reporter] Patriots video assistant
caught aiming a camera

at the play calling signals of a New York
Jets coach, a violation of league rules.

[talk show guest] They were blatant
about this, and they got caught!

[talk show guest 2] It's premeditated!

[analyst] All of a sudden, the Patriots
are looking like a dirty franchise.

[analyst 2] Their reign, their dynasty,
is under fire now, under attack.

[analyst 3] It would be
out of character, but nice,

if Bill Belichick
would stand up and answer questions.

[analyst 4] The tape will not lie.

[crowd chanting] Defense! Defense!

[announcer] You have your arch-rival
here, the Colts and the Patriots.

Tom Brady, the king of the comeback.

But this time he's down four,
with 24 seconds to go.

I don't even think Peyton's gonna watch.

Brady fires.

Intercepted!

[cheering]

Colts are going to the Super Bowl!

[Tom Brady] It was really tough.

Whoever won that game was probably gonna
win the Super Bowl, and we could have.

We didn't, but we could have.

[Bill Belichick] In football,
if you can't control the game,

then, ultimately, I think
your opponent's gonna wear you down,

and they're gonna end up
where you want to be.

[reporter]
Is the Patriots dynasty over?

[reporter 2] Now that Indianapolis
has burst the dam,

I think that the dynasty is crumbling.

[reporter 3] This offense played lousy

and definitely lost
some of that aura of invincibility.

[Josh McDaniels] I look back on that game.
The offense,

we didn't get out in front enough
and we couldn't score enough to beat 'em.

Right away, going into that off season,
Bill and I,

we talked about, we got to find
some new offensive blood.

A receiver who's an alpha player.

Like a guy who's gonna hang 50 on you.

I'm going inside a club,
and my phone rings.

"Hello?"

[deep voice] "Uh, hey, Randy,
it's, uh, Coach Belichick."

And I... "What?"

I said, "This is Bill Belichick
of the Patriots."

He goes, "What?" And hung up the phone.

I'm like, "Maybe he doesn't
want to come to New England."

So then I called him again.

"Hello?"

"Uh, Randy, this is Coach Belichick."
And I'm sitting there like,

"Who the hell keeps playing on my phone?"

And he's like, "All right,
now who is this? Like, this is a prank."

And so, I go, "No, no, this is
Bill Belichick, and we've traded for you."

[Moss] He cut straight to the chase.
He said, "Look, man,

if you're not up here by 10:00
tomorrow morning, no trade."

And I'm like,
"Oh, shit. I just hung up on Bill."

Me and a couple of my boys
were sitting at a table,

and I've ordered a 12-pack of Corona.

Man, I held one of my Coronas, I said,
"I'm gonna be a Patriot!"

[male reporter] Randy Moss, acquired
by the Patriots in a trade Sunday morning.

Welcome to New England, Randy.

[female reporter] He is arguably
the most physically talented receiver

in the entire NFL.

[analyst] With Moss catching passes
from Tom Brady,

they have to be considered front-runners
to win it all.

[presenter] They made their offense
so much better,

and I still like Belichick
in any big game,

so I think they're the team to beat.

[cheering]

[announcer] Back here
at the Meadowlands. Football is back.

[crowd chanting] J-E-T-S!
Jets! Jets! Jets!

Let's get ready.

Let's get ready, boys.

[Moss] It's my first game as a Patriot.

During training camp, we'd run plays,
but it really wasn't full speed.

So I still haven't hit
that extra button yet.

We're driving.

Next thing you know, Tom Brady says,
"Hey, man. Just get open."

[announcer] Here he is again.
Like a statue in the pocket.

Able to go long for Moss!

[Moss] Everybody watched the movie
Forrest Gump.

Do you remember when Forrest Gump
busted out them chains?

They're supposed
to straighten his legs out.

Remember his facial expression,
how he was running,

them chains came off,
and then Forrest Gump's eyes are just...

That's how I felt.

[crowd cheers]

[announcer] Moss has
his first touchdown as a Patriot.

[announcer 2] Randy Moss
is one of those guys.

Nobody catches up to him.

We killed them. Let's go!

I remember being on the sideline
at the Meadowlands going, "Holy shit,"

like, "This is gonna be fun."

I had no clue what was about to happen.

It was just your normal Sunday.

The Patriots, they're winning.
Nothing unusual.

But then, all of a sudden,

the security people from the Jets
came to us with this camera.

They said, "We have an issue."

- [beep]
- "One of the Patriots' photographers

has been videotaping and spying
on our coaches and our plays."

The camera is confiscated.

But nobody
had any fucking idea what to do.

The Patriots would say,
"That's my fucking property."

The Jets were saying,

"You're fucking spying on us.
We don't want you to have it."

I told him, "Possession is nine-tenths
of the law. I'm in possession of it.

It's staying with me until we decide
what we're gonna do with it."

And that was
the most common-sense thing to do.

Turn it over to the NFL
and let them decide.

[reporter] Some suspense
as the NFL is looking into this.

What was a Patriots employee
doing with a camera

trained on Jets coaches
Sunday in New Jersey?

The cameraman in question was
looking, quote, "scared to death."

[analyst] It's all allegations
at this point,

but if it's true,
this has major ramifications.

One thing we know for sure,
the media and the other teams

- are having a field day.
- Yes, they are.

There's buzz around the league
about the Patriots' Spygate situation.

- [reporter] Spygate...
- [reporter 2] Spygate...

[reporter 3] Spygate.

[reporter 4] This story
is a mushroom cloud.

It's bigger than I thought it would be.
It's just, it's huge.

[man speaking Chinese]

Now, look at this. See, that's a camera.

- [audience laughs]
- That's how the Patriots were cheating.

- [audience claps]
- Maybe this is just fine in New England,

but here, ladies and gentlemen,
uh, no dice.

- [man] No.
- [laughter]

[Roger Goodell]
Protecting the integrity of the game

is one of the most significant things
a commissioner needs to do.

Every coach, every player,
even the 32 owners.

They know my responsibility
as commissioner,

and they know
I'm not going to compromise that.

I heard about the issue
late Sunday evening.

And so, beginning
first thing Monday morning,

you have to go through a process
of finding out

whether they did violate the rules.

[reporter, on radio]
With New England, some intrigue.

The NFL is confirming that they
have confiscated the camera and tape

of a Patriots employee on the sideline.

He was possibly
stealing the Jets' defensive signals.

That's why the Jets' defense stunk.
It was espionage.

[Glaser] The Monday after the game,
it was my first day with the Patriots.

I came in as mainly
a liaison to the league.

The first piece of paper that I looked at

was a letter from Commissioner Goodell
essentially saying,

"We're going to be investigating claims
you have committed some rule violations."

Immediately,
I knew something very serious was up.

[indistinct chatter on speakerphone]

The league wanted to send investigators
to speak with members of our video crew.

Bill, of course. And Ernie Adams.

[inaudible]

This was my first interaction with Ernie

and understanding the historian,
the scholar, the genius of Ernie Adams.

[Willie McGinest] Ernie Adams...
I don't even know how to describe him.

We used to see this guy walking around.
He had these glasses, this moustache.

Always talking to Belichick in private.

They were always, like,
kind of whispering.

[Damien Woody] Ernie Adams
being at the center of Spygate

made perfect sense to me.

He's a football savant.

Ernie Adams is... a genius.

There's not one detail that Ernie Adams
would not know about.

Just so you know,
on this whole video thing...

- [interviewer] The video thing?
- The Jets game in 2007.

- [producer] Oh.
- Okay, I just...

- I'm... I'm not gonna re-open that.
- [interviewer] We have to talk it--

Yeah, right, just so you know,
I mean, this is...

You're not... I'm not... I'm...

Could I tell you stories? Yes.
Am I going to? No.

I got some... [stammers]

It's going to the grave with me
a little bit.

[interviewer] Well, let's just talk
about it, we'll see where we go.

[Adams] We just sat down in the room.

I think there were three people
from the league and I was there.

They were on a fact-finding mission.

They were trying to determine
what exactly had happened.

The biggest thing
everybody has to understand

is there have been plenty of teams in the
history of the National Football League

who have tried to take
another team's signals.

You know, that's why you see a lot
of coaches trying to cover their mouth.

It's part of the game.

I always figured other people
are filming our signals.

And I know in some cases, they were.

It's, you know,
kind of basic counterintelligence.

[Kurt Fox] Jay, I've heard somewhere you
might have gotten your hands on this tape?

Yes, absolutely, Kurt. Check this out.

Video assistant clearly picking up
the Jets' defensive coach's signals.

The reason why you do that
is you study these hand signals.

"Hey, they're running this blitz,
they're running this coverage."

[reporter] An entire system
of covert videotaping was developed

and a secret library created.

During games, Adams then sat
in the coaches' box with binoculars

and notes of the decoded signals
with direct audio to Belichick.

They literally had the answers
to the test before it was given.

[interviewer] I know
that this is a difficult subject.

But in 2007,

you were caught videotaping
opposing teams' signals.

Yeah. Again, that's all
in the past, and I've...

I've made my comments on that.

I don't have anything to add.

Some might argue in a game of inches,
putting that kind of information,

where you could decode signals,
come up with specific plays

to use in real time in a game
is pure gold in the NFL,

that could be the difference
between winning and losing.

Again, you can get those same signals
by sitting up in the press box

and writing down what the signal is
and what the play was,

and... and doing it that way.

Those signals are available
to anybody who wants to see them.

But they don't have them on tape.

We videotaped them. It wasn't anything
that wasn't visible or wasn't available.

We did it in a way
that was more convenient,

that we could study better.

"Videotaping of any kind,
including but not limited to

taping of an opponent's
offensive or defensive signals,

is prohibited on the sidelines,
in the coaches' booth, in the locker room,

or at any other locations accessible
to club members during the game."

- That seems pretty crystal clear, Bill.
- Right.

Well, it clearly was a mistake.

And some people would say that mistake
was just flat-out cheating.

And I interpreted it incorrectly.
So I was wrong.

Others have argued that you chose
to gamble, to risk breaking the rules,

and got caught.

And it wasn't a misinterpretation
of any kind.

Well, I can't control
what other people think out there.

I'm telling you what happened.
That's what happened.

You will never convince me
that Bill Belichick,

the most ardent student of football
that I've ever been around,

doesn't know the rules.

I just think he thought,
"I'm smarter than everyone else.

No one's gonna even know what I'm doing."

And that's a great way to get caught.
[chuckles]

[indistinct radio chatter]

The NFL is getting ready to announce

whether the New England Patriots cheated.

[analyst] They have every right
to go after Bill Belichick,

and I've got no problem
with any sort of suspension.

[presenter] This is a huge, damning
thing to the franchise, a huge deal,

damning personally to Robert Kraft.

[Robert Kraft]
You know, I couldn't believe it.

I went right over to Bill and I said,
"Let me ask you something, Bill.

How important to us

is something like that
on a scale of one to 100?"

And he said to me, "One."

I said to him,
"Then you're a real schmuck."

Look, I was pissed with Bill.

But when you have division from within,

it can be very destructive and dangerous.

So, I protected Bill.

I talked with the lawyers
from the NFL office.

I said, "Look, fine Bill, fine us.

Do whatever you got to do,
but don't suspend him."

We tried to protect his reputation.

The three-time Super Bowl champion
New England Patriots

and their coach, Bill Belichick, have been
punished for spying on their opponents.

[reporter] The NFL fined
Belichick himself half a million dollars.

...five hundred thousand dollars,
the team another 250,000,

plus at least one first day draft pick.

[reporter 2] Even though the punishment
was unprecedented,

there are a lot of people in the league
who feel it should've been more severe.

[Cris Collinsworth] Belichick
should've been suspended

for at least a couple of games.

[Michael Strahan] You have to wonder
if the Kraft factor came into play.

Robert Kraft is so beloved
in the NFL offices.

[MacMullan] Robert Kraft is one of
the most powerful owners in sports.

He's got a tremendous amount
of power and influence.

It's just how it works. Is it fair?

Usually not, in my estimation.

[Glaser] Anything left open
was media fodder.

And it was gonna be a story.

And so the NFL
flew security personnel in again.

And it was decided that
we would destroy the tapes on premises.

So, I remember walking down the hallway
and asking someone for a hammer.

And they took the hammer to the tapes.

And I'm on my hands and knees
in a dress and high heels

picking up the tapes
and throwing them away.

I remember thinking to myself...

"All the news cycles. All the commentary.

This is done. It's over. We've been fined.
This is over."

That is not at all what happened.

[camera shutters clicking]

[reporter]
So, why did you destroy the tapes?

Because we had an admission of guilt,
there was no purpose for the tape.

The tapes are competitive.

I didn't want them to have access to that,
and I don't want the other 32 teams...

How would anyone get access to it
if you had it in your possession?

The same way, unfortunately, it got out to
the media a week after we discovered it.

So, unfortunately,
there are ways in which tapes get out.

From my standpoint,
there was no purpose for it.

That's why I destroyed all his notes
and all his tapes. Okay, thank you.

- [reporter] Thank you, commissioner.
- Okay.

[analyst] The league, the Patriots, they
just want this Spygate thing to go away,

but a lot of people around the league
are still thinking,

"Hey, New England was caught cheating
and it's a black mark on their success."

[reporter] This is a man who
was establishing his coaching legacy,

and now and forever,

it becomes incumbent upon whoever writes
the ultimate story about Bill Belichick

to put that he cheated.

Here is the flat facts. Bill Belichick,
you are now known as a cheater.

Cheater. How does that sound?

That doesn't sound too good,
and it's embarrassing

not only to yourself, Bill,
but to your players.

You've hurt your ownership,
you've hurt the fans in the city.

All because of your arrogance.

[camera shutters clicking]

I know there's a lot of interest
here on the, uh,

you know, the situation decision
last night.

But, as I stated, it's over, um,
and we're moving on.

And right now, all my energy
and focus and attention

is, um, on the San Diego Chargers
and that game Sunday night.

So that's where we're at.

[reporter] Bill, tell us why you've never
actually stood in front of people

and expressed remorse.

Right now, we're focusing on
what's in front of us,

and that's the Chargers.

We're moving on.

[Michael Holley] As a columnist,
I'd spent a lot of time with Bill,

and I felt like I knew him.

[camera shutters click]

But with Spygate, I saw a different Bill.

Nobody ever thinks that
when they reach the top

that they're gonna change.
Nobody thinks that.

But they do.

Three Super Bowls in four years, coach.

Surely the word "dynasty"
has to be something now you think about

when you talk about your football team.

After multiple championships,
there's hubris.

To Belichick, rules don't apply to him.

And he doesn't like being called out. Period.

He was called out by the commissioner,
the media.

And he was called out
by Eric Mangini and the Jets.

This whole scandal
all started a couple of days earlier

in the Patriots' first game of the year,

when Bill’s former assistant coach
and friend, Eric Mangini,

now the head coach
of the Jets, ratted him out.

[crowd chanting] J-E-T-S!
Jets! Jets! Jets!

[reporter] The Jets have their
home opener against the Patriots.

Jets head coach Eric Mangini
will face his mentor Bill Belichick.

[Joe Theismann] Just think about it. It's
like father and son. It's coach, protégé.

That's a bond that can never be broken.

Eric Mangini knows
that they're gonna be taping him,

because he, as an assistant, would witness
the Patriots taping opponents.

So he tells the league,
"They've got cameras. Watch them."

Eric Mangini, of all people.
Belichick mentee, his guy.

I respect the commissioner's decision
and anything related to the decision.

Anything associated with the decision
is really a league matter.

- [reporter] Thank you.

[Aramini] Betrayal.

It's just terrible, you know, emotionally.

And sometimes it's very tough to...
to swallow.

Mangini. Did he rat his former boss out?

Well, unless these guys
took a bond, omertà,

when they all worked for the Patriots,

if you're there and there's a history
of doing this illegal filming,

every coach that came through there,
they know about this.

The unspoken rule is that when you
leave the family, you leave the family.

You honor the opportunity that was given.

You don't make a mess.

You remember how you got
your first step in the door.

You don't make a mess.

Bill was very close with Eric.

And his very normal human reaction
was a feeling of betrayal.

And he distanced himself
from those of us that were closest to him.

[cheering]

[Pioli] You could feel a certain type
of energy in that building.

A certain type of anger.

A certain type of vengeance.

rough week for a storied NFL franchise,

and when the New England Patriots
take the field later tonight

against the San Diego Chargers,
it will be under a dark cloud.

say anything about this Jet thing, okay?

Just shut the fuck up.

Just worry about ourselves, our team.

Everybody else is gonna say what
they wanna say. We can't control that.

But we can control what we're talking
about and what we're doing, okay?

The Patriots were thought of
as one of the model franchises.

That image has taken a whack this week.

there's no question about that.

it was something that I was searching for.

And he just said, "What I mean by family,
you hold everybody accountable.

I don't care if you're at the bottom
or if you're at the top,

if you get in trouble, I get in trouble.

That's football family."

with all the tumult over the past week,

have been picture perfect.

in the AFC championship game,

and less than two weeks before
the Super Bowl, he's in New York.

At the time, he was dating a big-time

that is trying to make history
and probably the greatest quarterback ever

is injured
before the biggest game of the season.

arrived Sunday
in Arizona for the Super Bowl.

He admits
he did injure his ankle a week ago,

but says he's ready to go next Sunday.

[Kraft] When the New York media picked up
the thing with Tommy with the boot,

that was the beginning
of a very difficult Super Bowl week.

People said things
and put things out there

that allowed the haters
to come out in droves.

Well, another day,
another little piece of intrigue,

as we get set for the Super Bowl.

Six years ago, the Saint Louis Rams
played the role of the massive favorite.

The Patriots start in the role the Giants
will be enjoying Sunday.

Now the Boston Herald reports

a source close to New England
at that time

says a member of the Patriots' staff
filmed the Rams' final walkthrough.

[Holley] Splashed on the back
and front pages of the Boston Herald

was this revelation that the Patriots

recorded the Saint Louis Rams

before Super Bowl 36.

People immediately came out and said,

"No wonder they won the game.
They were cheating!"

[reporter] I think that what we're really
talking about here is fair play.

The edict of fair play.

This is impactful. This is changing games.

You are now getting inside the other
teams' huddle. You know what's coming.

I don't care what you say.
That's a problem!

The story was absolutely not true.

And I told the editors
of the Boston Herald

in no uncertain terms
that if they didn't retract that story,

we were gonna come after them
guns a-blazing.

I think I said something to
the effect then, you know,

"We're gonna own your paper pretty soon."

And if the paper was worth owning,
we would've owned their newspaper.

But it wasn't something worth owning.

Ultimately, the Boston Herald
ran a full apology.

But the damage had already been done.

further fuel the public perception

that what the Patriots
have accomplished is tainted.

"Okay, this thing is in hand."

But anytime the Patriots have the ball,

no matter how much time is left,

when Tom Brady's your quarterback,
you always worry.

[Moss] The last play...
all we needed was a try for a field goal.

So, Tom told me,
"Hey, Randy, we canning that.

Run the play.

When I look at you, reverse field."
