chase should have ended

with the complete
disappearance of the thieves.

And it probably would have done,

if daylight and the river

hadn't revealed this state of affairs.

From this damaging piece of evidence,

the authorities soon realised
that it must have been

between this bridge and
the French town of Urdos,

that both watches and men disappeared.

That is to say, all except
the unfortunate Martin,

whose dead body is soon
discovered in the rigorous search

of the district.

The two bullets in his body are
from different calibre guns,

and it is clearly a case of murder.

From the tailor, Spanish
detectives secured the address

of Martin's apartment in Barcelona.

But nothing incriminating was found there.

Some American dollar bills,
property of the dead man,

were impounded, but the search, as such,

grew more or less fruitless.

There was only one thing of interest,

a girl's picture.

And this time, it was the
photographer who helped

by identifying the lady

as a popular cabaret artist, Elena Vargas.

(singing in a foreign language)

(audience applauding)

- [Narrator] The Barcelona
police, however, got nowhere.

And, in due course, the
French Surate was informed.

From there, a dossier
concerning the death in France

of the American, Martin Scott,

eventually reaches the
United States' Embassy.

This brings, from Washington,

a special agent of the Treasury.

- Martin Scott, Mr. Dean,
was my younger brother.

-I see.

This must be a very
unpleasant situation for you.

- It sure is.

Find one of your own family
mixed up with the racketeers.

Hadn't seen him for years,

not since he went to Spain.

And I hardly know anything about him,

except that he was the type
that always craved excitement.

During the war, he was a
fighter pilot in the Air Corps.

He had a wonderful record,

so he can't have been all that bad.

War suited his particular
temperament, I guess.

Peace must have been
somewhat of an anticlimax.

He spoke excellent Spanish.

And since he got out of the service

I always understood that he had a good job

in some kind of an
exporting firm in Barcelona.

Looks like he did his exporting
on more exciting lines.

- [Dean] Didn't you correspond?

- Not often; we were never very close,

didn't have the same interests.

- [Dean] Apparently not.

- That doesn't alter the
fact that he was murdered

wounded by the night watchman,

and finished off by someone else,

someone I'm very anxious
to meet, if I can find him.

- This trip to Paris, then, is personal,

rather than official?

- [Lee] It's both, Mr. Dean.

- And the official side?

- A federal one.

- [Dean] How do you mean?

- Those dollar bills,

found in my brother's
apartment in Barcelona,

were counterfeit; they're
first class forgeries.

To the average cashier outside the States,

undetectable from the real thing.

For some time now, bills
made from those same plates

have been giving trouble
all over the continent.

The only thing we know about them

is that they're printed in England.

They're smuggled out and
passed very cleverly over here

by some international gang, or other.

And for one purpose only:

to buy gold art treasures from
impoverished noble families

who think they're getting good
American dollars in exchange.

The gold is melted down
and moulded into the shape

of inexpensive ornaments,

and lacquered over to look
like some cheap metal,

such as brass or bronze.

They're then shipped openly into England.

- Tell me, how do you know all this?

- One consignment was damaged
while it was being unloaded

at an English port.

The crate was examined by the customs,

and the true value of its
content brought to light.

In this case, the gold was travelling

as Spanish wrought iron door knockers.

The department's been working
on this job in England

for nearly six months, now,
without getting anywhere.

There just hasn't been
one single thing to go on.

Now there is!

The gang who worked this gold racket

and the gang who robbed that watch factory

are one and the same.

The phoney money in my
brother's apartment proves it.

- What do you plan to do about it?

- Go to Barcelona, see if
I can pick up the threads.

Start with my brother's
murder and try to work back.

Find those other three men
and the people behind them,

the big people,

the people who are printing
these counterfeit bills.

I've got a special assignment
from the department.

With my personal interest in the matter,

they feel I might get somewhere.

- Okay, how can I help you?

- I want an official introduction

to the man who handled the
case over here for the Surate,

Inspector LaGrant.

- I'll do that right now.

- In your report, Inspector,
you were of the opinion

that the robbery of this watch factory

was connected with smuggling.

What exactly made you think that?

- For a very simple reason, Monsieur.

A similar robbery took
place some time ago,

at another factory near
the Spanish frontier.

And none of the watches
from there were anywhere,

except to England, with
obliterated index marks.

England is a big market
for smuggled watches.

And in my opinion, both these robberies

are the work of the same gang,

a gang operating in Spain
with headquarters in England.

- Why should they risk a robbery, though,

when the watches could just
as easily have been bought?

- Because, Monsieur, they were first took.

The British customs
have people planted here

on the continent.

And some of them are
here just to make a note

of any large purchases of watches.

To steal them instead, therefore,

would be the only way around it,

besides making the profit
four times as large.

And that is what those four
men in Urdos were up to,

I am sure of it.

The watches have been hidden somewhere,

to be recovered later.

We've been searching all
traffic in that district.

-I see.

- [Narrator] The next day,
Lee Scott is in Barcelona.

He makes his way to
the Avenida de Abriano,

where Martin had lived.

He's only one thing to go on,

mentioned by LaGrant, an
unknown Frenchman called Pierre,

a man Elena Vargas once met with Martin,

but whose last name
she claimed no to know.

The rent of Martin's apartment
had been paid in advance

some weeks prior to his death.

And Lee has no difficulty in moving in.

(speaks in foreign language)

- Mr. Scott?
- That's right.

- I'm Ricky Metcalf, British Customs.

Inspector LaGrant sent
word for me to contact you.

- Come in Mr. Metcalf.

You're very quick, I've
only just moved in.

- I watched you arrive.

I thought it best that
we should get together

as soon as possible.

LaGrant sent me the gem.

- The what?

- The gem.

The dope.

Now, naturally, we're only

acting like the popular conception
of the Englishman abroad,

I should first tell you that
I'm Spanish by marriage,

not by birth.

I was born in Paris.

My brother is French, Edmond LeBlanc.

Or at least he was Edmond LeBlanc.

But he had the misfortune to get entangled

with some people running
a currency organisation.

Entangled with them without
knowing what was going on.

I know it sounds impossible,
but these things happen.

I know my brother, and I
know that this is true.

He never, for one moment,
expected that his francs

were being plated illegally,

how cleverly he was being used,

how, if anything went wrong,
he would be the only one

the police could touch.

In the end, of course,
things did go wrong.

The next morning, some of his

He was presumed to have committed suicide.

But a long sentence in a French prison

doesn't bear completing,

especially when one is innocent.

letter from south of France

signed by a nickname I used to give him

when we were children.

I shall never forget reading that letter.

It was very carefully worded,

but it tell me that he was still alive

and where I could find him.

I went there at once.

He was, more or less, in hiding,

having a dreadful time.

He hadn't been able to get out of France

and all of his money practically all gone.

When I came back to Barcelona,

I took Martin into my confidence.

I had to tell someone.

He was more than sympathetic.

It was Martin who got
Edmond out of France.

Don't ask me how, he just did.

It was typical of him.

- I know, anything for a thrill.

- Now you understand
why I call your brother

a very good friend.

Thanks to him, Edmond's in
Morocco with a different passport

and as far as the French
police are concerned,

Edmond is dead.

But that man, tonight,
knows that he isn't dead.

He knows where he is,
which name he's using,

everything, in fact.

had to come here tonight.

- He must have helped Martin
get Edmond out of France.
