But in those divisions you also have

a lot of games in which the grass

it's not like a beautiful stadium.

And you also need to know
how to compete

and you need to know how to win.

So I think that's a lecture for
the players but also for the coach,

to sometimes think out of the box.

Pep Guardiola introduced things
in the third division

that had never been seen before.

The kind of demands
he was used to as a professional.

Looking after the players,
food, chefs, travelling,

recording the games, away games.

But they weren't superstars,
not in the third division.

They were kids, most of them.

He was thinking like,
"OK, one clay I'm a first-team coach,

"I want to work like this."

He was unbelievable. He was.

What was interesting, of course,
is that, at the same time,

the first team was in chaos.

There was actually a friendly,

the first team
against Pep Guardiola's B side.

Because I don't think I've run
and chased the ball as much ever.

The first-team players didn't take
it as seriously as we should have.

We had some of the best players
in the history of the game.

Ronaldinho,

Deco,

Samuel Eto'o.

They'd won everything

but something went wrong
a little bit collectively.

The dressing room
just wasn't in sync.

Ronaldinho plays bongos until
two in the morning every night,

everybody sees that,

We have a discipline problem.

People would walk into the changing

I worked with
Frank Rijkaard for five years.

that season, we were thinking

that we had to change
the manager in the first team.

And then we start
thinking of candidates.

The amount of problems we had
at the time -

Ronaldinho is getting old,
he's partying all the time,

trying to suck Messi
into his lifestyle.

How do you stop it?

Well, we need a sergeant,
we need a general.

Who is the greatest general in
the world? Jose Mourinho.

Pep Guardiola only coached
the B team for one year.

Jose Mourinho has
won the Champions League.

MOURINHO: I think I'm a special one.

The solution seemed obvious.

Unfortunately, Jose Mourinho doesn't
fit what we call Barcelona DNA.

Barcelona realised that one way
to succeed in football was to

create your own players.

So they gave a lot of respect
to the academy, called La Masia.

La Masia was next to the Camp Nou.

Ancl in there, they teach
a way of living and a way of being.

So when Pep Guardiola gets invited
to stay in his early teens,

he's surrounded by coaches,
by players like him.

Ancl was clearly inspired
by watching the first team

when he was a ball boy.

A lot of young players,
when they stay at La Masia,

they end up looking
for father figures.

Ancl I think Pep Guardiola
found one or two coaches

that did that for him.

But certainlyjohan Cruyff.

The relationship between Cruyff
and Guardiola is probably one of

the most important relationships
in the history of the game.

Johan Cruyff was
a visionary as a coach.

As a player, he was just
the majestic embodiment

of Total Football.

It was a celebration of technique,
intelligence of movement,

being a chess grandmaster on the
pitch, working one move ahead.

When I became sporting director in
Barcelona, 2003, I started always

introducing the same philosophy.

We had to be back
to those times, no?

We would never know what
would have happened if Mourinho

was the chosen one.

But I think there was no doubt
that Guardiola was the right choice.

They just were kids that had just
arrived from the B side,

but were very important for
what he was trying to do.

Every defeat and every draw
would be used by the media to say

he was inexperienced,
it should have been Jose Mourinho.

Ancl everyone tries to kill you
because the decisions you have made.

In the middle of all that, Johan
Cruyff wrote a very famous article

in which he said,

"This is the best Barcelona in
a long, long, long, long time."

That was my father. He would have
these kind of protective reactions,

but also because
he believed in Pep 100%.

Me, personally, I was so convinced
because what the players say.

The players,
they were absolutely excited.

How can you dominate possession?

If you can keep the ball,
the opposition doesn't score.

He wanted our full-backs
so high up the pitch,

that we would force
the opposition to sit back.

Risky, if you lose the ball.

But we had Busquets, Xavi,
lniesta and Messi,

and you form a diamond
of those four.

As soon as we're in possession,
I don't think the opposition

believes they can win
the ball off those four.

If we would have lost
in that game, pressure on him

would have become immense.

therefore opening up

And he thought, “Wow.

"We have this little kid,
called Messi.

"What if we switch and put Messi
not on the centre-forward,

"but in the midfield with
30 metres to run?"

That clay, I think, changed
the history of football,

the history of FC Barcelona,

and the history of Messi.

They destroyed Real Madrid,

in the style that
Pep Guardiola wanted.

he made that innovation -

And Jose Mourinho runs onto

I remember that Inter Milan game
against Barcelona in 2010.

Ancl that was Jose Mourinho -
the arch pragmatist -

taking on this purist, this poet,

this high priest of
the beautiful game,

and just destroying him.

being chosen ahead of Pep Guardiola

He doesn't act
the Barcelona way in the field.

They were the two best teams
in the world battling

for the same trophies.

Ancl in the semifinals of the
Champions League, you couldn't

Being part of that, I think
it must have been exhausting

and ugly for Pep.

COMMENTATOR: For Barcelona,
it is next stop Wembley.

They've knocked out their
fiercest rivals, Real Madrid.

COMMENTATOR: Xavi,
onto the unmarked Pedro!

And it's a goal for Barcelona,
and it's been coming all the way!

Sometimes finals are
not very beautiful football

because there's so much pressure.

Ancl they won those two Champions
League finals against Man United

dominating, thrashing them,

with beautiful football,
with amazing goals.

When you see something beautiful,

something inside you sparkles.

Ferguson said that.

FERGUSON: It's the best team
we have faced.

No-one's given us
a hiding like that.

So, they deserve it because
they play the right way.

Even him losing the final,
he said, "Wow."

Have you started looking for another
job because you have no challenges?

GUARDIOLA: I have to look for
in myself, inside of me.

But now I have intention
to continue one more year,

and after we are going to see.

The team perhaps had
reached its potential.

Ancl that was for me, "Hm."

The genius.

By September, October, this
fine team were playing football

that hadn't really been seen before.

They were completely untouchable,
and they only started losing games

when they had won the title.

That's when they eased off with
the view of protecting players

for the Champions League.

The 2014 semifinal is a very pivotal
moment in the Pep reign at Bayern.

They go to Madrid and they dominate.

I think he was very upset when

we heard rumours that maybe

the two executives he'd
worked with at Barcelona,

people that he trusted.

When I finished in Barcelona,
2010, I wanted to come

to the Premier League, so of course
I was thinking that maybe one clay

we could work together, you know?

Bayern Munchen have won the title!

When I had to sign a player
who was playing in the Bundesliga,

I was always talking to him.

Ancl then I was then telling him

how amazing was the life
here for us.

So it was a little bit tricky.

Some massive breaking news
in the last half an hour.

The Bayern Munich manager,
Pep Guardiola,

is going to become Manchester City's

new head coach
at the end of the season.

There's been months
of speculation about this.

Not too many managers
get appointed five months

in advance, but then not too many
managers are like Pep Guardiola.

That last year,

the spectre of Guardiola leaving
was hanging over the whole season.

Pep Guardiola will go to
Manchester City having failed

to win the Champions League
at Bayern Munich.

I first met Pep when he was getting
off a plane at Manchester Airport.

You know, he just looked so much
like a sort of Spanish tourist,

if you like - he was just
in really relaxed clothes.

I was asked by a Spanish agent

to find a Premier League football
club where he would go on trial.

He was 34 and he was very serious

about getting a contract
in the Premier League.

When we first arrived at the club,
we walked down a corridor

and Andy Cole came out the dressing
room and he sort of did that,

you know, sort of hero worship.

Ancl then we went to see the home
game against West Bromwich Albion.

I was squirming a little bit
because it was quite a direct game.

David James launching it for
flick-ons and knock-downs.

Not a great advert
for the Premier League.

"|t's not my place."

There was only one picture
that I've seen, and I've still

got it on me mobile phone.

There he is, in this brown jumper.

Ancl there's me sat next to him,
you know, looking a lot younger.

Ancl then he ended up in Mexico.

The City in 2005 was such a
different club to the one he joined

as head coach in 2016.

City's a club on the up,
and this is proof.

You know, he's the biggest
football manager in the world.

He walked into the

This is a test for him.

and expect to take it by storm.

This is a different kettle of fish.

People say, "You will not
be able to do that in England."

Wonderful goal.

But there definitely was this
sense that the Champions League

was the thing
that Pep really wanted.

But it was this thing like,
"Oh, he won the Champions League

"because of Messi."

So the Premier League

It was clearly the Champions League
that he was going to be judged by.

Ancl I think that is right,

they wanted the Champions League.
