to see with their very own eyes

the greatest team competition
the world has ever known.

Welcome to Spartan.

I'm Dhani Jones alongside former
professional soccer player, Kyle Martino.

Every week, Kyle, we're seeing
remarkable performances

on this absolutely brutal course.

Brutal, an understatement.

It has definitely become the norm here
at Spartan.

Tonight, six teams
will compete head-to-head

on a mile-long obstacle course.

Only one of them will advance and claim
that final spot

for the championship next week.

In the end, the winner will go home
with $250,000.

[crowd cheering]

The three teams competing
in our featured race are ready to go.

The winner of this heat
is guaranteed a spot in tonight's final.

[all chanting] Red! Red! Red!

[Martino] In red is Blonde Ambition.
The tallest, and you guessed it,

the blondest team
in the entire competition.

Joni Merritt is 5'11",

Alex Sawicki is 6 feet,

and Bonnie Overbeck is 6'1".

[Joni] I'm a real estate title agent,
and Bonnie is a real estate agent.

[Bonnie] I was sitting at my desk
and I looked up

and I thought, "Oh, my God.

"That woman is the tallest woman
I've ever seen."

I thought, "Damn, she was tall."

And we've been friends ever since.

[Joni] Our Spartan elite is Alex.

She's a six-foot tall blonde,

and I think when you see her next
to Bonnie and I,

you'll understand why she fits in.

[Alex] I think I was a good fit
for team Blonde Ambition,

obviously because of the height
and because we're blondes.

But I also think
we're all very aggressive,

so I envision us being able to work
really well as a team.

[crowd cheering]

[Jones] The blondes have paired up
with a couple of pretty big guys as well.

Joni's boyfriend Aaron is 6'2"

and his training partner Jake stands 5'11.

[Martino] And Blonde Ambition
brought a ton

of friends and family from Cincinnati
your backyard, Dhani, to cheer them on

including Bonnie's children.

No giants on the team in yellow,
but they've got some

big personalities,
the Free Spirits feature

American Ninja Warrior superstars,
Grant McCartney and Neil Craver

who have become close friends
despite living thousands of miles apart.

-'Sup?
-Hi, guys.

Hello. Hello.

I met Neil at the 2015
America Ninja Warrior finals.

Give me a hug.

Hey, good to see you, man.

-It's good to see you.
-[Grant] I miss you guys.

That's where our bromance started.
We just figured we'd put a team together

and see what'd happen.

-Whoo-hoo!
-Oh, Neil.

[groaning and grunting]

[Grant] He is a wild one.

Being both good old southern boys,
I couldn't pick anyone better.

Oh, hell no!

Me and my girlfriend Brittany live here

-on Oahu in Hawaii.
-Go!

[Grant] Neil and Joy are in North Carolina

on the other side of the mainland.

Pull!

Pull!

Some people would see a disadvantage

that we haven't been able
to work out together,

but I think that we can work through
that using technology.

I think definitely there's gonna be

-a Spear Throw on the show.
-[Brittany] Nice.

[Neil] I'm not really worried
about the distance.

I feel like it's gonna create

an energy when we do reunite

that's just gonna, you know,

explode with possibilities.

[Jones] Free Spirits team captain
is Ryan Woods.

A chiropractor from Boone, North Carolina.

He started Spartan racing two years ago
and has already won six races.

[Martino] As for the blue team,
they're also close friends.

These guys met and bonded
while competing in Spartan races.

They named themselves Second Chance
because they've each overcome

tremendous obstacles just to be here.

-On three. One, two, three...
-[all] Whoo!

and the rest of the teams are gonna face

let's go down to Evan Dollard.

Thanks, guys. Obstacles from
Spartan competitions across the world

were the inspiration for this course.

But ours are unlike anything
these athletes have ever seen,

designed specifically
to create the ultimate team competition.

It's one mile from start to finish,

but it will be
the longest mile of their lives.

Completing every obstacle
depends on a team strategy.

-[man] Grab the back of her knee.
-[woman] Let's go.

-[man] Go!
-[Dollard] Who goes first?

-[man grunts]
-[Dollard] Who goes last?

-No!
-[Dollard] Does the team captain lead?

We're cruising for the win!

[Dollard] Or bring up the rear?

[man] Don't be looking behind you.
Come on!

[Dollard] It will be
a mile-long battle of endurance...

-[straining]
-[Dollard] ...grit,

-and constant communication...
-[woman] Let's go!

[Dollard] ...culminating with the toughest
obstacle ever concocted, the Slip Wall.

The roughest 18 feet of back-breaking,
hard-hitting, herculean terror

these competitors have ever faced.

[man screams]

-Guys, back to you.
-[Jones] Thanks, Evan.

And here we go, Kyle.

A spot in tonight's final is on the line.

With Second Chance in blue...

Alison.

[Martino] The giants,
Blonde Ambition in red.

Best friends Joni and Bonnie

are known in Spartan racing circles
as the Wonder Twins,

and the long distance
Ninja training partners

the Free Spirits in yellow.

[Jones] Blow that horn!

-[air horn blows]
-[crowd roars]

[Jones] And the two Ninjas,
Grant and Neil,

have Free Spirits out in front.

[Martino] Blonde Ambition looking
powerful up the middle,

and Second Chance just steps behind.

-Call Neil.
-Good God.

[Martino] Free Spirits are the first
to the eight foot wall.

They definitely have athleticism,

but they've hardly
trained together as a team.

[Jones] Blonde Ambition in red
at an average height of over six feet.

They should have an advantage
on obstacles like this

where height works in your favor.

[Martino] And in blue,
you see Alison Chang

of Second Chance being lifted up and over
by teammate Ryan Shah.

These guys aren't just happy to be here.
They're lucky to be alive.

[Ryan Shah] I realized
I had hit rock bottom

when I'm 20 years old, got no job,

no friends, no... nothing to show
for myself and I'm, you know,

an all day, everyday heroin addict.

[Alison Chang] I went home every day,

and I would actually have
two dirty martinis.

[Ryan] I got clean on October 7, 2010
and that time, I, you know,

gained a lot of weight.

There's an old saying
that we put down the spoon

and picked up the fork.

And, uh, that's when I realized
it was time to start getting healthy.

[Alison] I didn't realize how much
weight I had gained,

and that's when I realized
I needed to change my life.

[Ryan] You know, when I get through a race

or I'm up against
an obstacle or a challenge,

you know, I can think to myself,
yeah, this is tough,

but I've been through worse.

[Alison] I discovered I was so strong
and I could do

all these things
that I never thought I could.

[Ryan] You know, my future isn't written
and, you know, the best is yet to come.

Every day is a second chance.

We're good. We gotta go get the trapeze.

[Martino] Ryan and Alison's
road to recovery

has led them here
and they're headed to the Lake Swing

where Free Spirits
already have three across.

[man] One, two, three...

-[Jones] Nice! Make it five.
-Positions.

[Martino] Oh, what a start by the Ninjas.
If they mount their five by five raft...

[man] Alison, run up and jump and grab it.
Go! Go!

[Jones] And there goes Alison Chang.

Oh! Now she needs to stay
in that 55 degree water

until all of her teammates
have made it across.

-Oh!
-Go!

[Martino] Look at that.
Now Blonde Ambition has arrived

and here goes Jack Bauer
for a second chance.

[Jones] Jack Bauer from 24?

-[laughs]
-[Martino] A different one.

This Jack Bauer is a civil engineer,

-and he just barely made it.
-[woman] All right, go!

[Jones] And now his best friends
and coworkers Bonnie and Joni.

-And Joni made it.
-[Martino] Now Bonnie's in the water.

[man] You're gonna need to jump up to it.

-I don't think I can.
-Yes, you can.

[Martino] Now that's former motocross
racer Shaylen Pearson.

[man] Jump now, now!

-[Martino] Got it!
-[man] We got a good lead.

[Martino] Free Spirits
on to the Lake Crossing

fighting to pull that five by five raft

-across 300 feet of water.
-All right, go!

And Blonde Ambition
continue to go two at a time.

Alex makes it across.

[Jones] And now Aaron and Jake.

[indistinct shouting]

[Jones] Jake needs to get out
of the water,

but Blonde Ambition
has moved to the second place.

[Martino] Ryan Shah still yet to go
for Second Chance.

Ten years of alcohol and drug addiction.

At 33, he's in the best shape of his life.

[Ryan] What I would tell anybody
who's struggling

is there is the possibility
of doing something better with your life

and turning things around.

You know, the main message really
is just that there's hope.

Drop 'em. Get ready to jump.
It's gonna hit hard.

As Grant readies Free Spirits
to hit the shore in first,

Blonde Ambition is currently in second.

But being tall could be
a disadvantage here at the Lake Crossing.

[woman] I'll push you two hard.

-Paddle harder.
-[woman] Joni, you got to paddle harder.

[Jones] It's not easy to balance
five giants on a wobbly 5 X 5 raft.

And look at Ryan Shah pull on that rope.

Second Chance is back in second place.

[woman] You got this, guys...

[Jones] Two lead changes
on the first three obstacles.

The race for a spot
in tonight's final is on.

[Martino] Welcome back to Spartan.
Before we get back to our featured heat,

let's take a look at what happened earlier
in Heat 1.

The Castle Rock Commandos,

a group of retired
special forces soldiers...

-[smacks]
-[woman] Yeah!

...crossed the finish line first
and advanced to tonight's final.

Thank you so much.

[Martino] Rochester United finished second
in 24 minutes and 10 seconds.

Now we'll have to wait and see
if their time is faster

than the runner-up in our second heat.

The fastest runner-up
earns a Wild Card spot in tonight's final.

[Jones] As we rejoin the action in Heat 2,

The Free Spirits made up
of American Ninja Warriors

are headed towards the intersection

of mud and blood
that we call the Army Crawl.

Stay to the sides.

[Martino] A 110 feet of mud,
nasty tree roots,

-and barbed wire and...
-[Jones] Oh, my God!

Neil Craver! No one's attacked
the Army Crawl like that.

He looks like he's on a high speed
conveyor belt.

[Martino] We've never seen
anything like that.

I guess we understand
where he gets his nickname.

[Joy] Neil's nickname is "Crazy" Craver,

because he doesn't
do anything really normal,

but the really cool thing
about the crazy stuff that he does

is that it always pans out.

[Neil] Mud don't matter to us.

[Jones] "Mud don't matter."
I love this guy.

Neil Craver just went under
110 feet of barbed wire

-in 21 seconds.
-[Grant] That's it, guys!

-[Martino] 21 seconds.
-[Grant] Come on.

[Martino] And his teammates
aren't far behind.

Free Spirits are absolutely
crushing this course.

-This is unreal, Dhani.
-[racers grunting]

-[woman] Okay, go.
-[man] Three, two, one. Step!

[Jones] It's looking like the race
for second will be the story

of Second Chance and Blonde Ambition
mount the Log Lift.

-[all] Up!
-Yes!

[Martino] Both teams have to lift
that 200 pound log

up those stairs and place it

right there onto those hooks.

[Jones] Blonde Ambition
looking really smooth.

And just like that,

they move back into 2nd place
zipping down that line.

Yeah, let's go!

Three, two, one...

-Jump!
-Go, go, go!

Come on.

[Martino] And up ahead, the Free Spirits
are looking free and pretty spirited.

There's their team captain, Ryan Woods,
winner of six Spartan races

leading them into the Arena.

[Jones] In the Arena,
they'll face two obstacles.

The Spear Throw,
testing concentration and accuracy.

And the Totem Climb,
requiring arm and grip strength.

I don't know how much longer I can hold.

[Jones] As the fans cheer for the leaders,

let's go down to Evan Dollard.

Here they come right now team Free Spirits

has a commanding lead
coming into the Spear Throw.

But these Ninjas have very little
experience in this Spartan obstacle.

It can be a game changer.
They need to execute.

They need to get three spears
into that target and fast.

Shah, here.

[Dollard] Team captain Ryan Woods
does have Spartan experience.

This guy's an athlete.

He walked onto the cross country team

at North Carolina State
and finished his career

as an all-American.

Balancing that spear in his hand

as the teammates pull the target closer.

[grunts] Boom!

[Dollard] Great start
for the Free Spirits.

-[Ryan] Go!
-[Dollard] Back to you guys.

[Martino] Thanks, Evan.

-Back at the Army Crawl.
-[woman] Keep moving! Keep moving!

[Martino] It's the two team captains
out front,

Alex Sawicki for Blonde Ambition,
and Matt Willis for Second Chance.

[Jones] And at six foot,
Alex is four inches taller than him,

which should give Matt the advantage here.

-[grunts]
-[Jones] Oh! But Matt gets snagged.

Come on, come on,

-Let's go, let's go, let's go!
-We got time, guys.

[Martino] Ahead
at the Spear Throw the Free Spirits

have missed three in a row.

-Now Brittany...
-[grunts]

Let's go! Next up! Next up!
Oh, wait, it's me, Ha ha ha!

[Martino] Team captain Ryan Woods
nails his second.

Now it's Craver's turn.

-Yeah! Go!
-[Martino] And the Free Spirits

are groovin' onto the Totem Climb.

-[yelling]
-[Jones] Look at Craver!

[Martino] This guy's bananas.

At the the Totem Climb
all five team members

must be on the rope at the same time,
and then pass the flag up the rope

and locking it in at the top.

And this is a great strategy, Dhani,

Grant McCartney holding that rope taut,
making it easier

-for his teammates to climb.
-[Grant] You're doing awesome!

[Martino] With the Free Spirits
way out in front,

time to check in on
the all-important race for 2nd

and the pursuit of the Wild Card spot
in tonight's final.

We gotta catch them.
We can catch those guys.

[Martino] Second Chance has fallen
a few steps behind Blonde Ambition.

You have 250,000 reasons
to push yourselves right now.

[Martino] But this race means more than
money to Bonnie Overbeck on the left.

She credits Spartan racing
and her friendship

with Joni Merritt on the right
with improving her life.

When I met Joni,
I felt like I was dead inside.

You're depressed from the divorce.

You just don't enjoy things
that you always used to love.

And when I met her,
it was like I'd learned to play again.

And then I got to go out
and be physically active.

We enjoyed these races.

[Martino] Right now,
if exhaustion means enjoyment,

then Bonnie and Joni are having
the time of their lives.

[Jones] The life of the party
in this race is "Crazy" Craver.

[Martino] Another daunting obstacle
completed by our leaders.

At this pace, they really
could break the course record

of 20 minutes and 19 seconds.

[Jones] Blonde Ambition arrives
at the Spear Throw.

They're about 17 seconds ahead of the pace
set by the 2nd place team in Heat 1,

[Martino] Second Chance
is right on their heels

knows that the Spartan course

can make even giant leads disappear,
especially at the Dunk Walls.

[Martino] The water is a heart-stopping
55 degrees.

And there is only a tight,
narrow 18 inch gap

to swim through under the walls.

[grunts]

[Martino] The middle wall
weighs 250 pounds

and it requires multiple team members
to lift it just enough to squeeze under.

[gasping]

I got it! Go all the way...

[Jones] The Free Spirits
now at that 250-pound

-middle wall.
-I'm gonna drop it.

[Martino] On American Ninja Warrior,
Grant, avoids the water

-at all costs.
-All right, go!

-[Jones] Yeah, but on Spartan,

-it's just another obstacle.
-[gasps]

the Free Spirits are unphased

by these obstacles.
They just keep plowing forward.

[Jones] But now they've got to take on
the mother of them all...

The 18-foot monster that is the Slip Wall.

[Martino] These guys seem
to have a game plan for everything.

What an impressive showing for a team
that's had very little training together.

[Jones] And here's Second Chance
at the Dunk Walls.

[Martino] And they're looking good
for the Wild Card

-in tonight's final.

Shaylen Pearson just bailed out.

But the men of Blonde Ambition
look absolutely exhausted, Dhani.

At the Slip Wall, the Free Spirits

are still a textbook
illustration of teamwork

pushing each other to be their best.

And the course record is in their sight.

[Jones] Brittany, a kiss
on her boyfriend Grant,

-as she climbs over him.

Joy Cox will be the first to the top.

Free Spirits gaining an extra foot

by stepping on each other's heads
to climb this wall.

[grunting]

[Jones] And look at the water
pouring out of Ryan's shoe

onto Grant's face.

the second to the top.

[Martino] And Shaylen Pearson's
hesitation has allowed

Blonde Ambition to close the gap
on Second Chance.

The race for 2nd place is nearly even.

[Jones] Free Spirits are nearing the top.

Wow.

Grant McCartney beasting it.

[Martino] And Ryan Woods,
the last to the top.

[Martino] Wow! And the Free Spirits
become the first team

to finish this course in under 20 minutes.

Free Spirits took flight
and never looked back.

Despite the long distance
between their homes,

they worked together
and triumphed as a true team.

I'm a retired Army Special Forces
Lieutenant Colonel.

[helicopter blades whirring]

I served on active duty from 2004 to 2009.

I was a captain for the Special Forces.

[Vance] I was an Army Green Beret.

I earned three bronze stars
in the Combat Infantryman's Badge.

[helicopter blades whirring]

Ready, up!

I think our team has an advantage
over the field

because we've really been put through
some of the most difficult things

[Jones] The three Green Berets have
teamed up with a couple of strong athletes

from a professional figure skater,
23-year-old Danica Druva

and personal trainer Jocelyn Tobler,
a 31-year-old mother of three.

[Martino] Their team captain
Robert Killian

monitoring his heart rate
with his TomTom fitness watch.

Before the race begins,
he's around 68 BPM.

Blonde Ambition and Bonnie Overbeck
standing tall at the starting line.

Give it some hell, guys.

[Martino] While the smallest athlete
in the field 5'1" Joy Cox

and the rest of the Free Spirits
have to be feeling confident.

-Hey, guys. Kill 'em, right?
-Let's do this.

[Jones] It all comes down to this.

The final spot in the championship

and a shot at a quarter
of a million dollars

is there for the taking.

One team moves on...

two are sent packing.

Blow that horn!

-[air horn blares]
-[Martino] And here we go.

Neil Craver and Grant McCartney
of the Free Spirits

picking up right where they left off
taking an early lead.

But 54-year-old retired Lieutenant Colonel
Mitch Utterbeck

is having none of it.
He sprints right by them.

-[grunts]
-[Jones] Oh! And a little stumble.

Into a forward roll.
The Green Beret is right back on his feet.

[Martino] 33 years in the Army
for that man.

[woman] Grant, go to the middle.

[Martino] Grant McCartney in yellow
barely slows down on the eight-foot wall.

[Jones] And the lieutenant colonel
giving his troops a lift.

Free Spirits onto the ten-foot wall.

But back at the eight-foot wall,

Blonde Ambition
and the Commandos dragging.

[Martino] That ten-foot wall

-is twice as tall as Joy Cox.
-One, two...going up.

[Jones] That's nice teamwork.

Thank you.

[Martino] She's up and over once again.
Free Spirits are dialed in.

Mitch, go.

-[Jones] Now the Commandos.
-Push.

[Martino] You hear that communication
early on from the military team.

-Go!
-[grunts]

[Jones] But it's the Free Spirits
who remain in the lead.

[man] Go, ladies, go.

[Bonnie] Push! Oh... [exclaims]

[Jones] And Bonnie Overbeck
takes a hard tumble.

-[woman] Come on, Bonnie.
-[Martino] I gotta tell you, Dhani,

I expected all the six footers
on Blonde Ambition to crush these walls.

But this race is about teamwork
and technique.

Height alone just won't cut it.

[woman] Yes, Jake, yes!

[man] Long stride.

-Deep breath!
-[woman] Keep this up.

[Martino] The Free Spirits,
these guys are so fast

they rarely even see the other teams
on the course, Dhani.

-Three!
-[grunts]

[Martino] This is an obstacle
they nailed in Heat 2

by sending two groups of two
and all five members stayed dry.

-[grunts]
-[Martino] Perfect technique here.

-[woman] Come on, guys.
-[Martino] Joy Cox and Brittany Uhl

do it again.

Let's go, Commandos. Let's do this.

-[Jones] But here come the Commandos.
-We're almost there.

[Jones] Free Spirits captain
Ryan Woods takes flight.

[Martino] The Ninja bromance continues,
Grant and Neil.

[Jones] And look at this.
It's a Spartan first.

Castle Rock's sending three across
at the same time.

Not bad, but Jocelyn Tobler gets wet.

[Martino] Now it's Captain Robert Killian
and his former Commander...

[Jones] Just as Blonde Ambition arrives.

[Brittany] Come on, get a lead on 'em.

[Martino] Flight Attendant

No lead is safe here on Spartan, Dhani,
and she knows it.

[Robert] Are we untied? Yep.

[woman] Go!

[Martino] Bonnie and Joni,
good friends and coworkers.

[Jones] Oh! And just like Heat 2,
Bonnie falls in again.

Get paddles, catch your breath.

[Jones] Commandos team captain
Robert Killian

won the Spartan Race
world championship last year,

but here, he's in charge of a team.

[Robert] I feel pressure to win
the Spartan team race event

because everyone's looking at me now like,

Oh, Robert Killian world champion.
Who's on his team?

There's a lot of expectation
for us to win.

[Martino] He knows there are still
plenty of obstacles ahead

to catch the leaders,

including two
on the other side of the lake.

[Jones] First, the Log Lift.

Each team must pick up a 200-pound log
and carry it 215 feet.

If they are able to hoist it
onto the two hooks

and all wrap their hands around it...

-Which isn't easy.
-[bleep] Ow!

[Jones] ...they can zip down and over
the pool of knee deep mud.

[all exclaim]

[Jones] From there, it's onto
the dreaded Log Traverse

requiring immense arm and leg strength...

It's not sliding at all.

[Jones] ...to walk another log down
60 feet of wall

suspended 10 feet above the ground.

[man screams]

-You on there?
-I got it.

Be careful.

[Martino] Free Spirits are the first
to make it across the lake.

[man] I'm number 2. I'm number 2.

-Go back.
-[all] One, two, three...

Down, up!

-Go.
-[woman] We got this.

[Jones] Bonnie and Alex taking turns
pulling on the rope for Blonde Ambition.

Go, go, go!

[Martino] And the Commandos
have reached the shore

just 15 seconds behind the leaders.

-[man 1] Push middle.
-[man 2] Go.

[indistinct conversation]

[Jones] Green Beret Vance Nixon
out in front for the Commandos.

Kyle, this guy survived four IED attacks
during his three tours of duty in Iraq.

[Martino] I doubt he's afraid
of a 200-pound log.

Swing it around. All the way.

-[man] I'm in. I'm in.
-[Jones] So smooth.

The Free Spirits are locked and loaded.

-[man] Let's go.
-[woman] One, two, three!

[Jones] And if they keep this up,
they might even break their own record.

Ow! Ow! Ow!

[Jones] Joy Cox is hurt.

And Grant just scoops her up.
What just happened there?

[Martino] Let's take a look.

Right there she rolls her left ankle,
lands awkwardly,

and Grant, the flight attendant,

handled it like a pro,
cool under pressure.

You okay?

[Jones] Less than halfway
through the course

and dealing with a critical injury...

[man] One, two, three... go!

[Jones] Can the Free Spirits
hang on to their lead?

[Martino] The Commandos are on the attack.

[Martino] Welcome back to Spartan.

Release.

[Martino] Before the break,
nutritionist Joy Cox

badly injured her left ankle.

Ow! Ow!

[Martino] But her teammates picked her up,

gunning their way
through the Log Traverse...

-You okay?
-It hurts.

-[Martino] ...and the Army Crawl...

[Martino] ...with the Castle Rock
Commandos in hot pursuit.

[Jones] As we pick up the action,

look at Joy Cox
running on that damaged ankle.

his heart rate halfway through the race
is 146 BPM.

[Jones] He's not even close to his max.

Killian's lungs are twice as big
as the average person his size.

It takes two x-rays to see them both.

[Jones] He's the Bruce Springsteen
of Spartan. Born to Run.

Separate so we're not kicking each other.

[Jones] Blonde Ambition at the Army Crawl.

This is an obstacle
where size works against you.

[Martino] Free Spirits are the first
to arrive in the arena

and will take on the Spear Throw.

[man] Grab the needles, guys.

You can see Joy limping.
What a courageous effort.

Now they'll pull the rope
to move the target closer.

Ow!

[Martino] And you can hear
Joy struggling. She's in a lot of pain.

They've got to hit
three targets to move on.

[Jones] Team captain

-[smacks]
-[Martino] That's one.

-[Jones] Neil Craver.

This guy looks like he was born for this.

-[man] Nice.
-[Martino] Two in a row for Free Spirits.

[man] Grant, go!

[Jones] Three in a row!

That's only the second time
we've seen that all season.

They're onto the Herc Hoist.

They're gonna have to work in unison
to lift that 350-pound box

until it rings the bell at the top.

[all] Pull! Pull!

[Martino] But here come the Commandos
keeping up the pressure.

[Jones] Free Spirits aren't
used to this, Kyle.

[all] Pull! Pull! Pull!

[Alex speaking]

[Jones] Team captain Alex Sawicki
still driving Blonde Ambition.

Come on, Rob.

[Jones] Commandos captain,
Robert Killian, first to throw.

Great start for the Commandos.

[Martino] Now Killian's former
commanding officer.

[Jones] Mitch sticks it!
That's two for the Commandos.

-[man] Take us home.
-[Jones] Whoa!

Funky underhanded throw by Danica.
And the Commandos can't close it out.

-Pull!
-One, two...

[Jones] Free Spirits have hit a roadblock.
Joy's bad ankle is a killer here, Kyle.

Four Free Spirits have to dig deep
and do the work of five.

[all] One, two... pull!

[Jones] Killian, the 2015 Spartan
world champ.

[woman] Come on, Rob, come on. Yeah!

[Martino] Killian clinches it.
And the Commandos have all the momentum.

How will Free Spirits respond?

[Jones] Blonde Ambition now in the arena.

They can make up some serious time
if they execute on the Spear Throw.

Go to the closest one.

[all] One, two... pull!

[Jones] Commandos trying to move ahead.

[all] Pull!

[Martino] Free Spirits look frustrated.

Can 36-year-old Jake Whitsel
get his team on the board?

[Martino] Yes!
Electrical engineer connects.

[Martino] And the Free Spirits
are finally moving that box.

-Only a few inches left.
-[bell dings]

And they bounce back into first.

Incredible recovery
Let's check in with Evan Dollard.

The Free Spirits continue their lead.

They are the first ones
to the Totem Climb.

-Oh, thank you, boo.
-[Martino] With Joy's injured ankle,

she'll essentially
be climbing with one leg.

-And pull!
-[bell dings]

[Martino] And here come the Commandos.

They've cut into the lead already,

and with a lifetime
of rope climbing experience,

this could be their moment.

Team captain Ryan Woods telling Joy Cox
to use him to help her mount that rope.

There's Joy using only her
phenomenal upper body strength

to lift herself up to protect that ankle.

[cheers, whistles]

with all five team members

out of the water and on the rope.

[Martino] And now they're gonna

[Jones] Brittany catches Joy
to protect the ankle.

That's an incredible Spartan team effort
by Free Spirits,

guiding their injured teammate
through the obstacle.

But you can see this is taking a toll
on the Free Spirits

as they cling to their lead
and struggle toward the Peg Climb.

While we were gone,
the first place Free Spirits

to hold off the surging
Castle Rock Commandos.

But Joy's bad ankle
put their team on shaky ground.

and likely tumbled

through these last two
brutal obstacles quickly.

[Martino] And Joy is through
the second wall.

Now, we saw Joy Cox, she's been limping
for the better part of this race.

Will that affect them
at the the Slip Wall?

They did great last time.

We'll have to see
if they can pull it off again

-with that injury.

With their lead almost gone,
the Free Spirits waste no time

assembling their human ladder.

Grant McCartney takes the base.

[Jones] And here come the Commandos.

We're gonna have a race up the Slip Wall
for the final spot in the championship.

[Martino] Ouch!

This time it's Ryan Woods
using his head for the Free Spirits.

[Martino] And Castle Rock quickly
assembling their ladder.

[Martino] Now Joy Cox.
She's a seasoned rock climber.

[Martino] That's typically, Dhani,

[Jones] She's trying to keep
much of her weight

off that left ankle as possible.

-[grunts]

[Martino] We talk about teamwork,

just refusing to quit

and the Free Spirits are home free.

[Jones] Joy may not be able
to walk tomorrow,

she's running to the finish line.

[Martino] The Free Spirits trained
thousands of miles apart,

but no team this season has looked closer.

They rallied around their injured comrade
and carried her to victory.

I just came off the log fall wrong,
but it's all good.

I wasn't gonna quit on my team.

It was truly a team effort
and they were there for me the entire way.
