the only thing we wanted was asylum.

But they separated us
from my little niece.

We have been separated from her
for practically four months.

I grew up with a good education.

Everything was calm,
everything was nice.

Until recently.

The situation's changed
because of all the gangs.

A few years ago,
they killed my father.

And three years later,
they killed my sister.

Sadly, in my country,
the deaths go unpunished.

We have police who do practically nothing.

They're corrupt. They sell themselves.

My niece's father,
he abandoned responsibility for her.

She was only three years old.

Back then, I was young
when I took on responsibility for her.

She was my sister's only child.

She's now 12 years old.

I think she's...

everything to me.

I watch over her as if
she were the light of my eyes.

I want what's best for her:
a better future.

In Honduras, I was affected by the gangs.

Three years ago,
they started threatening me.

They wanted 10,000 lempiras.

If I didn't give it to them,
they were going to attack my family.

We didn't have the money.

Ten thousand lempiras
is a lot of money in Honduras.

So I told my wife,

"My love, we have to do something.

Our lives are at risk."

And then we decided to make
the decision to come here to the US.

From Honduras until the border,

we took a lot of buses.

It took us a little over two months,

until we arrived at the US border.

There were various groups crossing.

There was a guy pulling a raft,

so he took us across the river.

When we crossed the river,
we went to the highway

and we waited until
the Border Patrol arrived.

Our intention was always
to give ourselves up to Immigration,

give ourselves up as a family.

Because what we're really looking for
is asylum.

They took us
to the "freezer." That's what it's called.

It was the first center
where we were held.

They call them "freezers"
because it's really cold in there.

I think dogs are treated better

than people in the "freezer,"

because dogs at least
get some affection.

They have a bed to lie down on,
but not in the "freezer."

But there was a little window,

and on the other side,
I could see my niece.

Then I think I sat down for a while,

and when I got up, she wasn't there.

I didn't know anything about her.

I'd ask, but they wouldn't give me
an answer.

I told them, "I'm her guardian,
I have power of attorney."

And they said, in these words,

"Your girl,
you're never going to see her.

Your power of attorney isn't valid
in the US."

They said it just like that.

For me, it's very hard because...

I love her as my daughter, as a sister.

We had never been separated for so long.

In my home, you'll never
find a flag that is not the American flag,

Because we respect it.

I don't speak English.
It's the only thing they could say to me.

�You've been here 15 years,
and you don�t speak English.�

But the truth is,
I haven't even had time...

to sit down and study,
because I work from 8:00 a.m.

until 11:00 p.m.

I love the word "enjoy."

because we couldn't do anything
at that moment.

in approximately three and a half hours.
