26 wounds, they're all
from an angle up going down.

That's what you call overkill.
That's like Manson style.

The question was why?
Why go after her? What for?

The neighborhood was
completely up in arms.

Everything at that point
in the investigation

was completely
like a laser on him.

He's going into
these neighborhoods

and walking out scot-free.

I mean, it was something out
of a TV show.

Davie, Florida, north of Miami,

is known for high incomes
and higher education.

Broward College, FAU...

Nova University's
pretty much exploded

and taken over
a lot of the town of Davie.

There is a lot
of educated people.

Davie had a lot of
gated communities,

very upscale residences.

And then further out west was
basically cow pastures.

and land and horses,
and that kind of thing.

We butt up against
the Everglades.

A lot of canals.

The town is part of sprawling
Broward County,

a Florida location that often
finds itself in the news

and not always for good reasons.

I started calling it
Brow Weird County

because of just the –
the types of cases

that either have been here

or the types of cases
I've handled over the years.

We've got all kind of
strange cases.

[Line ringing]

During the 911 call
that was received,

Justin Su said he found his
mother deceased in the bathtub.

As police race
to his home in Davie,

Justin stays on the line
with the 911 operator

and suddenly tells them this may
not have been a suicide.

As an anguished Justin waits
for the police,

another call comes in
to Broward County, 911.

It's from Justin's father,
Dr. Nan Yao Su.

♪

I got a call from my supervisor
and responded to the residence.

When I pulled up,
Justin was there.

He had blood on the front
of the T-shirt

and some blood
on his hands.

And Dr. Su was off towards
the east side of the house.

Dr. Su told us they had
just returned back home

from an overseas trip
the previous day.

There was a police officer
standing with both of them.

I asked one of the crime
scene techs to take Justin

into the crime scene vehicle

to photograph him
and collect his clothing

because we want to preserve
whatever evidence are on him

at that time and eliminate
any kind of contamination

by transporting him from
the scene to the police station.

I had another officer transport
Dr. Su to the police station.

It's about a 3,000 square
foot home on an acre lot

backed up to a manmade lake.

I walked in through
the front door

and went down the hallway.

Their luggage was still out.

It was obvious
they just came back.

A belt was by the front door.

There were some droplets
of blood

walking into the direction
of the master bedroom.

The smell of blood in the air
was very strong.

There were some drawers
and some jewelry boxes

that were opened, there was
a pillow that was

on the ground
without a pillowcase.

We believe the suspect
basically took the pillowcase

with whatever they could.

And from peeking into
the master bedroom closet,

I saw that there was wires

and everything
just ripped out of the wall.

It appeared it was one of those
scary situations

that everyone worries about.

A woman was in her home
minding her own business

when a burglar broke in
and confronted her.

And there was a glass vase

that was
busted up on the ground.

Some more blood that followed
and led into the bathroom.

That's where I saw Miss Su
on the – on the ground.

I saw multiple stab wounds.

It's clear to detectives
that Jill Su

was the victim
of a ferocious attack.

It seemed like there was a lot
of violence –

that's going to point you
in the direction

of someone known.

It was very passionate for –
with her

to be stabbed that many times.

Her hands were bound
at her wrists,

wrapped up with a belt
in front of her chest.

Her ankles were bound together
with an electrical cord.

There was definitely some kind
of struggle, it started at,

probably in the master bedroom.

Led out to the front door.

Where we recovered
a small pocket knife.

There were transfers of blood
all around the doorway

and the walls
that lead to the doors.

We believe that Mrs. Su
got loose,

tried to run out the front door,

and she was chased out
and they grabbed her

and pulled her back
into the house.

Crime scene techs drained
the bathtub of its bloody water

and find submerged evidence.

An alarm box that had been
ripped from the wall

was thrown into the bathtub.

And a very unique looking knife,

a large blade, handle,

had these serrated edges
kind of cut in.

As the possible murder weapon
is bagged,

detectives continue
to search the home.

The back door was broken out.

Appeared to be someone
trying to gain entry.

They used some kind of
instrument to pop the glass

out of the bottom corner of it,
but it was hurricane glass,

so it didn't shatter,
it stayed kind of in a pane.

Two security cameras
were missing,

but the electronics were
still in place.

The scene did not appear to be
that ransacked

like you'd normally see
in a burglary,

where, like,
a professional crew.

The crime scene tech
and I sat down

and we found
which we thought to be

the most
viable pieces of evidence,

likely to have some type
of DNA on it

so we could submit to the lab
for testing purposes.

So, when I walked into
Justin's room,

I saw that he had
several knives in there.

Justin was a very big collector
of knives.

One of the knives that Justin
had in his bedroom drawer

was the same type as the knife
right outside the front door.

And that's how the suspicion
of Justin started.

As Justin is brought to the
police station for questioning,

word of Jill's murder quickly
spreads to the normally quiet,

affluent community,
horrifying its residents.

I got a phone call

from one of my friends saying,

"Did you hear
what happened to Jill?"

And it was a nightmare.

It was unbelievable.

It's dumbfounding.

I mean, you don't believe
it could happen

to your circle of friends.

She was such a nice person.

That's the overwhelming way
I could describe her.

Jill was very warm.

She was just like a very loving
and caring person.

And it showed.

There were so many questions.

Why did it happen to her?

Detectives hope questioning
Justin Su

will provide them
with an answer.

You always start with
the person, obviously,

who discovered the body.

And until they can be eliminated,

usually they're suspect
number one.

Justin said when
he went back home,

that's when he found his mom.

Justin wasn't as forthcoming

as what we would have liked him
to be.

He was kind of
all over the place.

Between his conflicting accounts

and the knives found
at the crime scene,

detectives consider
Justin Su their primary suspect.

Everything at that point in
the investigation was completely

like a laser on him,
and he reacted to that.

You rarely see a suspect
that is indignant and angry

as he did.

He actually cracks and goes,
"Oh, my God," you know,

"I should have told you guys
the truth from the beginning."

He saw a subject
walking through the house;

whoever that was had
tried to cover the camera.

I got an email from
the Broward Sheriff's Office lab

saying that I got a DNA hit
for this case.

It was just continued chaos.

While everyone's looking
for this guy.

At this point he's considered
armed and dangerous.

Police in Davie, Florida,
are questioning Justin Su

about the murder of
his mother, Jill.

He discovered her body
in their home,

and the answers
he's giving detectives

only lead to more questions.

- You're gonna have blood
on your hands. - Yeah.

Justin, he had multiple knives
inside his room.

He liked to collect
different writings on them,

drawings, sword type knives,

little pocket knives,
hand-held ones.

You would think that a burglar
is caught by surprise

by the owner of the house,
and decides,

"Oh, now I have to get rid
of them

because they're going to –
they see me."

You would think that the knife
would come from the kitchen

because that would be the
natural place that you would go.

But they came from his room.

How did the killer know?

That's the weirdest part
of the case to me.

In a room nearby, Detectives
have been interviewing

Justin's father, Nan Yao Su.

He tells 'em he was at work
and realized something was wrong

when he remotely checked
a live security camera

at his home using an app.

He had seen a figure go
through the view of the camera,

and he thought
that was a little odd.

He believed it was a male.

A young person, because
of the way they moved;

it was someone who was thin,

who was wearing a white
long sleeved shirt and pants

and who had their face
covered with something white.

And then immediately
that camera went offline.

His original statement to me
was that

this person looked white to me.

That was gone over
and over again.

He was holding a, uh,
white, uh, pillowcase

and he felt that it might have
been Justin playing games,

because when Dr. Su and Jill Su
were out of the country,

he told us that several times
Justin had some people over

and Justin basic moved
a plastic Solo cup

and put things in front of the
view of the camera to block it

because he knew his dad
checked it all the time.

So he called his son,
who then said,

"No, I'm – I'm not there.
I don't know what's going on."

The camera system
could be viewed live.

It wasn't recorded, and he'd let
the subscription run out.

It was very strange,
and I –

I wouldn't say it – it appeared
as if it was staged,

but it could have leaned
in that direction.

So I spent hours on the phone
with the company

trying to get
some potential video.

Unfortunately, that was not
recorded to any kind of server.

So, obviously that would have
been huge for us

to be able to have
that type of evidence.

As Justin's interrogation
continues hour after hour,

detectives note troubling
inconsistencies each time

he's asked about
the morning's events.

Mrs. Su reminded Justin
to pick up

special food for the dog –
and he did.

Justin lied about where he was
at that morning.

He actually cracks and goes,
"Oh, my God," you know,

"I should have told you guys
the truth from the beginning."

He opens up and tells him,

"By the way,
I wasn't really at work.

I was sleeping in my car

at Broward College
for a couple of hours."

And that, of course,
was very suspicious

to the police that Justin wasn't
where he said he had been.

The interviews with Justin
and his father also reveal

a strained relationship
between him and his parents.

Dr. Su is very proud of
the fact

that he invented
the termite bait system

that is used
all over the world today.

And as a result,
he's become a very wealthy man.

So Dr. Su
expected a lot of Justin

because he's a very
accomplished man.

And Justin was not delivering.

I learned that Justin had been

removed from
a university he was at.

And it was very hurtful
for him and the family.

I think Dr. Su
took it the hardest,

as being the scholar that he is,

that – that his son was removed
from out of school,

from academic issues.

So he was here Broward College,

and it just didn't seem like
Justin Su

was the academic type

that Dr. Su
had wanted him to be,

to follow in his footsteps
kind of thing.

More than 10 hours after Justin
was brought into the station,

his interrogation continues.

Meanwhile, investigators
are trying to learn more

about their victim.

A deeper dive into
Justin's mother, Jill Su,

reveals she was the grand niece

of the founder of the billion
dollar Halliburton oil empire.

When I found out,
it took a moment to click

who the Halliburtons were,
and I said, wow.

Because you would never know
by looking at them.

Neither one was dressed like
they were worth so much money.

They were very down to earth,
very sociable.

She never made herself look like

she was any better than
any of us.

Miss Su was
an upstanding citizen.

A lot of the people
that we interviewed had nothing

but great things
to say about them,

especially all Jill's
philanthropic work that she did.

They were very proud of it and
probably put a lot of pressure

on Justin to succeed in life.

Detectives wonder if that
pressure from his parents

may have become too much
for Justin to handle,

leading to a deadly outburst.

Myself and my partner
went at him pretty hard.

We have a program where I can
look into

where his cell phone was at,

if it coincide
with his story.

Investigators start poring
over the data

to see if it will
corroborate Justin's alibi

of being at Broward College
at the time of the murder.

Justin Su is a suspect
in his mother's murder,

but insists he was sleeping
in his car at Broward College

when she was killed
in their home.

Police are examining
Justin's cell phone data

to see if it sheds any light
on his whereabouts that morning.

It corroborated his story
that he got up,

and he went to go to
the animal hospital

because he had to pick up some
dog food.

They also obtained video
from the animal hospital

showing Justin arriving there.

He came back inside the house,
left again,

and went to
the Broward College campus.

And we also recovered
video surveillance

from the Broward College
parking garage.

Which showed Justin
enter the garage,

stayed up for a period of time,

and then exited the garage
as well.

We also obtained the video
from the guard gate

to the gated community
that corroborated his timeline.

So Justin was not at the house
when Miss Su was murdered.

There's no way he could
have done

anything like that to his mom.

We grew up with him, you know,

so we know where his heart was
and who he was.

He would never, ever have
killed Jill.

We're trying to find
all the facts that will lead us

to the person responsible
for the death of Jill Su.

Well, I don't feel bad
about a-any of that,

how we went through it,
how we went at him.

And if I had to
do it over again,

I would do the exact same thing

the exact same way.

The day after the murder,
investigators are still at

the crime scene looking for lead
to a new suspect

and working on a new theory

that Jill Su was killed
in a robbery gone bad.

What we think is a burglar
just came in

and found the first house
that looked like it was empty

because there were no vehicles
parked outside.

The front doorbell was broken,

and then he went around the back
and broke into it.

Jill Su was probably
sleeping inside her home

and was awoken by, uh,
this person.

That morning,
a neighbor reported that her dog

started going – started barking
like crazy at the front door

and she saw what she thought
was somebody dragging a package

back inside of the residence.

It's quite a distance
for somebody to see across,

and for a quick second.

We believe that Mrs. Su attempted

to run out the front door

and pulled her back
into the house.

And that's what the neighbor
from across the street saw.

People don't expect that they're
seeing someone being murdered

or being dragged in a house.

Detectives hope the autopsy
report will shed more light

on what happened to Jill.

The medical examiner explained
that she had 26 wounds,

all of them basically
concentrated on her upper torso

as she was sitting
in the bathtub,

which is consistent
with the fact

that they're all
from an angle up,

going down, slightly on a skew.

She must have put her hand out

to hold the knife away
from her at one point.

She had a thumb
that was almost severed.

They weren't able to determine
which knife was the one

that delivered any of the stabs
or a fatal stab.

The killer had
this powerful knife.

Sharp.

You would think that he would be
a little bit more efficient.

That's what you call overkill.

That's like Manson style.

Why?

Detectives look into how
an assailant managed to get

in and out of the wealthy
gated community.

We obtained the video
from the guard gate.

There was a list of people
going in and out

around the time frame
of the murder,

and we tracked all of them down
as well to find out

how long they were there for,
what their business was,

and actually confirmed with
the residents of the community

that they had these people
coming to their home.

And these people
did show up for work there.

It's my belief that somebody
entered obviously not

through the guard gate,
but on the northeast portion

of the residential community, Westridge

and walked along a canal bank

and got access to the home
that way.

I tried to focus with Dr. Su
on what valuables were taken

from the home
during this incident,

and he was only able
to come up with a watch,

two cameras were missing,
but there was nothing

really of huge value
that was taken from the home.

The victim's husband does offer
detectives some information

they believe could move
the investigation forward.

Dr. Su told us
while they were away,

he knew Justin had parties.

Justin, he said
he had friends over.

The amount of people
was in the twenties.

Investigators wonder if one of
those party guests

familiar with the home
and the community had returned

to rob the place only
to discover Jill Su at home.

Justin did provide us
with a list

of the names of all the friends.

They begin tracking down
all of the party guests

on Justin's list.

Everyone we talked to,

had to go into their backgrounds.

All of them
voluntarily give statements.

They all voluntarily gave DNA

and that was entered into
the system to hopefully compare

to eliminate these people
as suspects.

Alibis help eliminate many
of the names on the list

as detectives wait for
the results of the DNA tests.

It's a process
that can take weeks.

Detective Williams is surprised
when he's contacted

just nine days
after Jill Su's murder.

I got an email from
the Broward Sheriff's Office lab

saying that I got
a DNA hit for this case.

Police in Davie, Florida,
hunting the killer of Jill Su,

are testing the DNA
of dozens of people

who attended parties in her home
thrown by her son, Justin.

O-over there, I clean her pool.

They quickly get a hit
connecting someone

to the crime scene.

But it's not one
of the partygoers.

DNA came back to
Dayonte Resiles.

I've never heard
of that name before,

didn't know the person whatsoever.

His DNA was already
in the system.

Didn't live in the area,
wasn't a friend of the family.

He wasn't a friend of –
of Justin,

which kind of surprised us all.

Had no idea
why he would have been there.

I started running
a criminal history on him,

finding out
that he had been arrested

for burglary multiple
times in the past.

There were three locations
within the home

where Mr. Resiles's DNA
was located.

Basically what we call
touch DNA,

which is DNA that comes from
either cells or sweat.

First at the point of entry,

which was the lower part
of a glass door.

His DNA was on the knife
at the front door.

Most importantly, it was on
the belt used to tie her up.

Immediately called Dr. Su
and Justin.

I didn't want to come out
and say Dayonte Resiles

right away, so I asked them
other completely made up names.

♪

Detectives launch a manhunt for
Dayonte Resiles.

They're not releasing his name
to the public

for fear that he will flee.

They're feeling pressure
to make an arrest.

A number of phone calls coming
in to the police department

daily from not only them,
but from the Taiwanese consulate

where the Sus had been;

from the University of Florida police,

where Dr. Su had worked.

I had our analyst
look at the possible locations

where Dayonte might be,

and we came up
with an address in Sunrise

where it belonged to one of
his girlfriend's families.

His vehicle had been
seen there quite a lot.

We set up surveillance
at the residence

in the early morning hours.

His vehicle was parked
a couple of doors down.

He exited the apartment along
with two females.

I'm sure
he was a little surprised

that we found him there.

And he was taken into custody.

He was very calm.
He was –

Didn't ask me any questions.
Didn't make any statements.

When they arrested him,

I was very much relieved
that they got him.

We were relieved that
it wasn't anybody we knew.

But then, you know,
the question was why?

Why go after her?

What for?

I started getting phone calls
from other residents in Davie

saying that we recognized
his picture from the arrest

because several weeks prior

he came to our house
and knocked on the door

and offered to provide
some kind of service to us,

and we told him no
and shooed him away.

But they gave me a statement
that he was inside

the neighborhood prior to.

Found out the neighboring jurisdiction

to the north of,
city of Plantation,

he was responsible
for two residential burglaries

in a gated community
up against the water,

as well as some other burglaries
in and around the area.

I was assigned the case.

He is a very personable
young man.

He's very soft spoken,
very polite.

He's very easy to deal with.

Turns out that he had
a burglary case

pending in Palm Beach County.

He had another burglary case
pending here in Broward County.

So, I started taking
in all those cases

for continuity's sake.

The cases said he would knock
on the door

to see if somebody was home.

If they weren't home,
he would break in

through the back, and –
and burglarize the house.

Very early on, 12 years old,
he's arrested for grand larceny.

As he progresses as a criminal,

you can see
a certain code in him.

He didn't steal
from the poor folks

in the neighborhood
that he lived in.

He would venture
into these gated communities,

into these extremely
wealthy areas,

and he would take from them,

bring it back,
and according to reports,

would use some of that money
to shower folks with gifts.

We heard from talking to people
and some intelligence

that he was basically seen as
the Robin Hood of the community.

But Dayonte claimed that he
could never commit the crime.

He's just a burglar.

He's not violent.

♪

On July 15, 2016,

nearly two years
after the murder of Jill Su,

the man charged with killing
her, Dayonte Resiles,

is brought to
the Broward County Courthouse

for a pretrial hearing.

I was running late,
and as I came up the, uh,

the hallway, all of sudden,
there's just chaos.

People running all around,
the sheriff's office is

locking down the elevators.

So I'm saying,
"What's going on?"

And finally,
somebody had come down,

says, "What's going on?
Your client escaped."

I got a call from a prosecutor;

called me all in a panic, saying,

Resiles escaped
from the courthouse,

and we need your help.

Said, Well, I'm in Italy.

There's not
a whole lot I can do.

Watch the left side
of the screen

as one of the bailiffs dashes
out of the courtroom,

those still inside looking
around confused

and in disbelief.

So I was – I was home
recovering from and injury.

I got a phone call from

a Broward Sheriff's Office detective,

and he said that
Dayonte Resiles

had escaped from the courtroom.

And I just remember saying,

you've got to be kidding me.

21 year old Dayonte Resiles,

who as described by
Broward Sheriff Scott Israel,

leapt from a jury box

and shed his black and white
striped jail uniform,

handcuffs and shackles in a hall
before he dashed down

four flights of stairs
to freedom.

Resiles was awaiting a hearing
when the 21 year old

somehow managed to get free
from his shackles

and run out of the courtroom.

I couldn't believe that.

I mean, it was something
out of a TV show.

Few things have ever shaken up

the Broward County Courthouse

like Dayonte and his escape –

it was mind blowing.

It was a Houdini act
come to life.

He went down the stairwell
and obviously shed the clothes.

So now he's just in shorts
and a T-shirt.

The videos show
he ran out the back

toward the bridge and there was
a car waiting for him.

And that's how he left.

Now, then, of course,
who gave him the handcuff key?

So, immediately BSO wants
to interview me, which...

I thought it was a joke,

besides being
a little bit offended.

And I said,

Why don't you
check your jail records?

I haven't been over
to see him in months.

And it was a guard that had
given him the key.

Police would spend hours
sweeping every inch

of the courthouse before finally
realizing the accused murderer

had made it out into the streets
of Fort Lauderdale.

that looks like Mr. Resiles,
call us in.

The sheriff at the time
was Scott Israel,

and he went on TV
telling to the camera,

"We're going to get you,
we're going to catch you.

You're not –
you're not getting away."

There was probably
$1,000,000 worth of

manpower hours authorized
looking for him.

Dayonte Resiles's phone calls
prior to the escape

had never been monitored.

They had been recorded
like everybody else's are,

but they had not been monitored.

After his escape, of course,
the police goes back

and starts
listening to the phone calls

to see if they could figure out
where he was or how he escaped

by listening to the
conversations he'd been having.

And, boy, did they find out
a lot of information.

As police review recordings
of his phone calls from jail,

they discover details
of an elaborate plan.

He had actually concocted
the whole escape scheme

by speaking to his friends
over the telephone

that was being recorded.

It was pretty detailed escape.
He was able to have people

waiting for him inside
the courtroom and a getaway car.

There's cell phones left
in certain areas,

there's clothes left for him.

He just had the perfect timing
set up for him

and all the distractions for him
to create this escape.

And he knew what the right time

when to get out of
that courtroom,

run past, shred his jumpsuit,

get down to that waiting car
and take off.

Hundreds of
law enforcement officers

fanned out across the area,

reaching out to contacts
and chasing down leads.

It quickly becomes
one of the most intense manhunts

in South Florida history.

Seven of his friends
were arrested in the escape.

It was just continued
chaos for days

while everyone's looking
for this guy.

At this point, he's considered
armed and dangerous.

It was a huge production
to even check these leads

involving a number of deputies
as well as the SWAT team.

So you had multiple resources,

law enforcement going full time
trying to find him,

and they couldn't.

The reward was upped
to $50,000.

As soon as they did that,
I said he's going to get caught.

And the way most people
get caught

is somebody close
to them turn 'em in.

They eventually got a tip
that led to his location

outside of a hotel.

Six days after his
brazen escape,

Dayonte Resiles surrenders
without a fight.

An alleged killer who escaped

from the Broward County Courthouse

is back behind bars.

After his capture, "Moochie" –
that's his nickname –

all his supporters would show up
with "Free Moochie" T-shirts on.

They had his picture on
ad "Free Moochie."

There was a big
social movement push,

the hashtag "Justice4Moochie,"
"freeMoochie."

There was all kinds
of billboards

that kept popping up all over
downtown Ft. Lauderdale

that said that there's
two victims in this case.

One showed a picture of Jill Su,

and the other one showed
a picture of Dayonte Resiles.

A big part of their argument
is that he doesn't fight people.

Why would Dayonte
stab her 25 times?

There's still
tremendous mystery here.

Prosecutors are confident
they have the right man.

They'll argue that the robbery
ending with Jill Su's murder

fits a pattern
of similar criminal activity.

Mr. Resiles had
committed burglaries

that were still pending,
they were all some time

during the middle of the day
in affluent neighborhoods.

Vast majority of the homes
all sat

either on a canal or a lake.

He broke into these homes.

He focused on
the master bedroom.

Basically, he took small things.

He would take jewelry.

And he pulled alarm panels
off the wall

and put them, in one case,
in a bathtub full of water,

just the way an alarm panel
was pulled off in the Su home.

In November 2021,

Dayonte Resiles stands trial
for the murder of Jill Su –

more than seven years
since her violent death.

Prosecutors tell the jury
that the evidence

provides a compelling
and frightening story.

I said to the jury,
Dayonte Resiles

thought the house was empty.

We know that Mr. Resiles,
when he commits burglaries,

generally covers his hands,
which explains

why there were
no fingerprints at the location.

And we know this because at
one of the other burglaries,

there was video surveillance
that captures him

with socks on his hands.

He gets into the home.

Dayonte was in that house,
burglarizing that house,

and he was surprised by Miss Su.

But he's already got
a long rap sheet.

He knows he's going
to lose everything.

He knows he's going to go away

for most of the rest
of his life, likely,

in a home invasion
of that type with his record.

It's my firm belief
that he just made up his mind

that he wasn't going to leave
a witness to identify him.

He tied Mrs. Su up,
put her in the bathtub,

and the stab wounds
were perpetrated

as she was sitting
in the bathtub.

She had a number
of defensive wounds

to her forearms and her hands.

Then the jury is told
Dayonte Resiles

calmly walked out
the door of the Su home.

The defense was focused a lot
on Dr. Su's statement.

The person looked white
or whitish to him.

They focused a lot
on it being Justin.

Nobody questions DNA evidence.

It can, however, be flawed.

There can be problems with it.

So the defense was in a sense saying,

perhaps the DNA tests
were botched by the lab.

The jury deliberates
for five days.

Mr. Resiles was charged
with murder in the first degree.

The clerk reads the verdict,

and it's manslaughter.

I honestly was just stunned.

Manslaughter
is an accidental killing.

How do you accidentally
stab somebody 26 times?

There were two jurors
who believed he was guilty

but would not return any verdict
higher than manslaughter.

And, you know,
feeling that it was better

to have a verdict than not,

they all basically compromised
and agreed on the manslaughter.

Then, there's another shock
in the courtroom.

The very, very first juror
who is polled –

you poll the jury,
who basically ask 'em,

is this your true verdict?

Was the foreperson of the jury,
and when they asked her

if that was her true verdict,
she said, no, it is not.

You know,
in 35 years of practice

and I've never had
the jury actually say,

"no, that is not my verdict."

She was not happy with

the manslaughter compromise, obviously.

The judge declares a mistrial.

A retrial is held four months
later in March 2022.

This time, the jury takes
four days to reach a decision.

The defendant is guilty
of murder in the first degree

as charged in the indictment.

First degree verdict
is, uh, life or death.

After the verdict,
the decision was made

by the prosecutor's office
and the Su family

to basically offer
a life sentence.

And he's going to be incarcerated

for the rest of his life.

At the sentencing hearing,

Jill's husband and son
are able to confront her killer.

You killed her
with cold blood.

In my mind,
you are persona non grata.

You do not exist.

The only person
on the entire planet

that knows
the last words of my mother,

that psychopath right there.

I'll always remember Jill as

a very, very kind,
kind soul.

She had a great heart.

She was so thoughtful and
considerate of others always.

A big loss
for the community.

She was too young to die,
so it hurts.

She was a super nice person.

You never, ever get over it.

You always say there should have
been more time to say something,

to do something
with that person.

And now there's no chance
for it to happen.

That's the sad part.
