It's a cold
morning in Toronto,

and there was a light
dusting of snow in the

upscale neighbourhood
where billionaire couple,

Barry and
Honey Sherman live...

The first person to
show up that morning

is the cleaning lady.

She arrives at 8:30.

She notices that
the morning papers

are outside the door.

She unlocks the door.

Normally, she would have
to disable the alarm.

But, the alarm
has not been set.

It's something that
strikes her as odd.

She starts cleaning-
she goes upstairs first.

♪

A gardener shows up.

This is winter, but she comes
in to water various plants

that the Shermans
have in their home.

So now, we have
the cleaning lady,

and we have
the gardener.

♪

It's a busy day at
the Sherman home.

The real estate agent
that works for

the Shermans arrives.

They've got clients coming
to look at the house,

which is for sale
for $6.9 million.

[Door creaking]

Another agent and
two clients arrive.

They're all now in the home,
and they start a tour.

♪

They look at the upstairs.

They look at the main floor.

And then,
they head downstairs...

to the basement,

to see the
underground pool.

The realtor looks down,

and she sees
driving gloves.

And she also sees the
home inspection report

she'd asked Barry
to bring home.

♪

She reaches down and
picks up the gloves.

Then, with the realtor and
the two clients in tow,

she continues...

down the long hallway...

to the swimming
pool room.

♪

The overhead
lights are not on,

but the pool lights
underwater are on.

So there's a dim glow.

♪

She's about to
turn the lights on,

but she looks
at the far end,

and she sees that it's
Barry and Honey Sherman.

♪

And they're sitting...

and leaning backwards.

She's thinking, "Are they
doing some yoga position"?

But then she thinks, "No,
this doesn't look good."

She turns immediately,

and hustles the other
realtor and the clients out.

Says, "We'll be in touch."

Hustles them
out the door.

♪

The realtor summons
the cleaning lady

and the gardener,
and says,

"There's something
terribly wrong downstairs

with Barry and
Honey Sherman.

Will you go down
and check?"

♪

The gardener goes into
the swimming pool room...

♪

Walks right up to
the Shermans' bodies.

She turns on her heel...

And she tells the realtor.

The realtor calls 911.

She says, "Somebody
has killed my clients."

♪

Barry and Honey Sherman were
not household names at all.

It's really only through
their death that people have

come to understand
who they were.

Barry Sherman was the
founder of Apotex,

one of the biggest
generic pharmaceutical

companies in Canada.

If you get a generic
drug prescribed to you,

or even something
over the counter,

it'll quite likely have
"Apotex" on it.

The financial press has
said Barry Sherman

is worth roughly
$4.5 billion.

Honey Sherman was very
involved in charity,

very involved in the
Jewish community.

A tireless fundraiser.

The Shermans were one of
Canada's wealthiest and

most philanthropic couples.

When they died,

Honey was 70 and
Barry was 75.

♪

Very soon after the
Shermans were found dead

on December 15th of 2017,

the news spreads.

♪

[Phone ringing]

A very close friend
called me, and tells me...

"Honey and Barry are dead.

And they're in
the basement." I said,

"They have to have died of
carbon monoxide poisoning,"

because they couldn't
have had an aneurysm

and just dropped dead
at the same time.

That's impossible.

♪ [Opera]

I was sitting at the
dining room table

listening to music, and...

I get a phone call
from my friend.

And she said,
"Did you hear

what happened to
the Shermans"?

I was in a boardroom,
got an email.

"Did you hear the news?"

My first thought was
complete disbelief.

How could this happen?

Why did this happen?

I can't even tell you
the sick feeling.

I couldn't believe it.
Why?

I went into
Forest Hill Village.

And, around there,

everybody knew
Honey and Barry.

And, it was silent.

People were on
their phones.

But with looks of
shock on their faces.

And you could see that they
were reading something

that they couldn't
comprehend.

I remember thinking,

"This is exactly
how it was...

on 9/11."

[Camera shutters clicking]

The story of Barry and
Honey Shermans' death

breaks just before 4 PM

on the Friday afternoon.

[News] Police are
investigating the deaths of

one of Canada's wealthiest
men, Barry Sherman,

and his wife, Honey.

People who live in this
North York neighbourhood

say they are still in shock.

It's such a loss
to the community,

to the Jewish community,
and to Canada at large,

'cause he was
such a good

entrepreneur,
philanthropist.

People are in
shock and crying.

The Prime Minister is
among the people

who's expressed
his condolences.

We've lost two
people who were

big community contributors.

Police say they have more
questions than answers

when it comes to
the deaths of

this billionaire
Toronto couple.

[Phone ringing]

My phone rings,

and a good friend of
mine said to me:

"What do you think
of the Shermans"?

I knew Honey Sherman.

I knew Barry Sherman.

I'm a friend of theirs.

I said, "Well, what award
did they win this time"?

He says, "There's no award.
They're dead."

I said, "What"?
I said- I couldn't believe it.

I said, "What happened"?
And he says,

"They were found dead
in a very strange way

in their home."

The circumstances of their
death appear suspicious.

[News] The couple were
found hanging,

in an area near
their indoor pool.

[Paul] Don't forget,
I'm a newspaper guy.

I wonder if my
people have it.

♪

Joe Warmington is my
guy who covers crime.

I'll phone him.
I said,

"Did you know anything
about the Shermans?"

He says, "I'm at
their house now."

♪

I remember it being
a really snowy night.

♪

And there was lots of
people milling around,

lots of reporters there.

♪

You knew it was
something different,

it had a big feel to it.

There was anticipation.

And a real sense that this
was a story that

a lot of people
would care about,

and that any updates we could
deliver would be important.

♪

There was a bit of a hurry
up and wait  attitude.

It was at least a couple of
hours that we were waiting

until the police made
a statement at 8:00.

[off-screen]
Oh, and here comes...

Detective Brandon Price,

who was the
second-in-charge officer,

gives kind of an impromptu
press conference

outside of the
Sherman home.

I just want to put people
in the area's minds...

at ease.

I can say that...

we did not observe any
signs of forced entry

to the,
to the building.

And so,
at this point...

indications are that we
have no outstanding suspect.

Thank you very much.

The top editors were going
to go with the headline that

they were executed.

But the police are saying,
"Nudge, nudge, wink, wink,

we're not looking
for somebody."

They were pushing
the idea that

there's no public
safety concerns,

so that's code for it's
a suicide scenario.

♪

And then, I had to
make that phone call...

to Mr. Godfrey.

He said, "The police said,
'murder-suicide'."

I says, "I don't believe it."

This was personal for him. He,
he knew these people, and...

his reaction was, right away,
like, "There's no way."

I remember him saying,

"There's no way this
was a murder-suicide."

I'm just stunned by it all.

And, he says, "Well,
give me a quote."

All I can say is, look,
a major loss for, for,

for Toronto,
Ontario, Canada.

[Joe] It was a long night,
I'll tell you, because...

you don't want to mess
something like this up.

But...

You know,
the next day....

♪

[Kevin] The news is on the
street from Joe Warmington:

this is a murder-suicide.

People at my newspaper,
the Toronto Star,

The Globe,
everybody else,

they start working
the phones,

talking to their
police sources.

They all confirm it.

The Toronto police
are considering this

a murder-suicide.

[News] Sources suggested the
early theory for investigators

is murder-suicide.

[Kevin] It's an atom bomb
that goes up around

the Sherman
friends and family.

It's just,
it's an explosion.

Not one person that knew
them believed for one minute

that it was a
murder-suicide.

I knew the police were,

if you'll pardon the
expression, full of shit.

♪

[Kevin] The notion that
Barry Sherman,

the titan of the
pharmaceutical industry,

would somehow
hang his wife,

and then hang himself
didn't make any sense

to anybody close
to the Shermans.

Seriously, if you had a
warehouse full of drugs

that could knock out
an entire zoo,

why would
somebody do that?

♪

On the day Barry and
Honey Sherman's

bodies were discovered,

at Alex's home
in Forest Hill,

the Sherman children-
Jonathan, Alex,

and Kaelen-
are gathered.

The eldest, Lauren,
she's in Mexico.

And, obviously, can't
come back immediately.

Mary, Honey's sister
was in Florida.

She books a private plane...

back to Toronto,

and she goes directly
to Alex's home.

♪

Jack Kay, Barry's very
close friend and

second in command at
Apotex is there as well.

Everybody is trying
to get answers.

And, they realize that the
day before, Thursday morning,

Honey was to be at a board
meeting for one of the

charities that she supported.

Honey doesn't show up
at her meeting.

Barry doesn't show up
at the office.

The children look back
at texts and emails,

and they realize that
nobody received a response.

Jack Kay says he exchanged
some emails with Barry

on the Wednesday night.

Barry's email to Jack at
8:23 PM on December 13th,

was the last anyone heard
from Barry or Honey Sherman.

♪

Friday night, a detective
shows up from the

Toronto Homicide Squad
to Alex's home.

He says, "We don't
have any information,

but we will be in touch."

The Sherman family
was upset that...

a detective showed up and,

didn't even take his
coat off and sit with them.

And, they're already starting
to hear a rumour out there

that it's a murder
-suicide investigation.

That was something that upset
the Sherman children because

the Shermans had
all sorts of plans.

They were planning to go
to Florida for a trip.

They had a new grandchild.

There are no signs that
something was wrong.

[Phone vibrating]

Later, Alex gets a call from
this family member

of another couple,

a husband and wife
from Toronto,

who were found murdered
in Florida in 2013.

That case, to this day,
is unsolved.

And, this family member of
this murdered couple, says,

"You can't trust police
to do everything right.

What we did is hire
a private detective.

You should do
the same thing."

♪

After this news comes out
that police are strongly

looking at a murder
-suicide theory,

the Sherman family
put out a statement.

[News] "We are shocked and
think it's irresponsible that

police sources have
reportedly advised the media

of a theory which neither
their family, their friends

nor their colleagues
believe to be true."

On the Sunday,
the police come out with

a one line statement after
the autopsies on

Barry and Honey
Sherman are done.

Autopsy results reveal the
cause of death for both

was ligature
neck compression.

The autopsy results
don't cause the police

to rule out their theory of
murder-suicide.

[News] Toronto police have
been under intense pressure

during the investigation as
the Sherman family have been

vocally critical of the
information that has

come out in the media.

The family has hired a
private investigator

to look into the deaths.

[Kevin] It's soon revealed
that the Sherman family

have hired well-known
Toronto attorney,

Brian Greenspan,
to assemble a team

of private investigators.

Brian Greenspan is
one of Canada's

top criminal lawyers.

He's the lawyer that if
you've got lots of money and

you're in trouble,
that's the guy you go to.

♪

Brian Greenspan has as
collected a bunch of

ex-Toronto Homicide officers.

And, Toronto Homicide
is not pleased that

they've got these...

ex-brothers, if you will,
of theirs,

running around,
talking to people.

[Joe] It's something I'd
never seen before,

where you had two
parallel investigations

at the same time.

The tension was enormous.

♪

In those first three weeks,
people in the public and

in the press
were speculating

that the police had
gotten it wrong,

and there was a
killer still at large.

And the Sherman children,
they feared for their safety.

They hired a team of
private security people.

We had these two
leading "lites".

Business-lites, socialites
in Toronto, dead.

And the police
explanation made no sense.

One of the great editors
in New York once said,

"The most important story
in town is a murder.

And the most important
murder story is a

murder at a good address."
And this fit that.

[Sirens in the distance]

♪

It's been nearly three weeks
since Barry and Honey Sherman

were found dead
inside their home.

It was December 15th
when the 75-year-old

founder of generic drug
company, Apotex,

and his 70-year-old wife
were found dead,

believed to be found hanging
near their indoor pool.

My editor at the time,
Michael Cooke, said,

"Kevin, I've got an
assignment for you."

Investigative reporting,
so important to newspapers.

And that's the kind of
work that Kevin does.

He already had a
reputation as Canada's

leading investigative
reporter.

So, if you wanted
something done,

I would go to Donovan.

And I said,
"I want you to...

find out what happened,

and I want you to find out
who did it."

♪

I'm not involved 'til
three weeks after

the bodies are found.

I don't know Barry and
Honey Sherman at all.

I don't know their friends.

The first thing I try to
do is find members of the

Sherman family or friends
who will talk to me.

I get a few people
on the phone.

These people are
very much in shock.

They're not going
to talk to me.

So, I start casting about for
information on anything that

has come out
from the police.

The police say that they died
of ligature neck compression.

Okay, so that's all
I've got to go on.

Well, what is ligature
neck compression?

And quite quickly,
I think...

Dr. Jim Cairns.

He's been a source of
mine for many years.

So, I give him a call.

At this time,
he's retired from

the provincial government.

I say, "Jim, ligature
neck compression,

take me through that."

He phoned me because he
wanted to know about...

strangulation.

And I said, "Yes, I can
tell you about that."

I've got to find out
if the Shermans were,

were victims of
murder-suicide.

And he goes through all the
forensic details

of choking of the neck.

But, different than other
times I've called him

for general comments
on a case,

his answers are
more specific.

And I say to him, "Jim,

do you have some
involvement in this case?"

I said, "Yes."

I get a phone call from
the private investigator.

He'd been on the
Toronto Homicide Squad,

so I knew him for years.

And he said, "I'm hired
by Brian Greenspan.

The Sherman family didn't
like the results of the first

autopsy, and they wanted
a second autopsy."

Dr. Jim Cairns' job is to
go out and try and find a

pathologist who could do
a second set of autopsies.

He finds Dr. David Chiasson,
who is Ontario's

former Chief
Forensic Pathologist.

♪

At that time, Barry Sherman
was thought

had hanged his wife, and
then hanged himself.

I had originally thought that,
as many others did,

they were hanging
from a great height.

That,
that's not the case and,

I heard from Dr. Jim Cairns
that the Shermans were

discovered in a
seated position,

side-by-side,
belts around their neck,

then tied to the railing.

To be hanging, basically,

your feet have to be
off the ground...

so there's enough
weight to do it.

But, there was next to
no weight on that at all.

So, they couldn't have
hanged himself in, in,

in that position,
impossible.

And then he
tells me something

really surprising to me.

The pathologist found
bruises 'round the wrist

consistent with the wrists
being tied together.

They're much more prominent
in Barry's wrists

than Honey's wrists.

The fact that there
were marks and

bruising on the wrists

meant that the
wrists were tied together

when they were alive.

The second series of
autopsies had come to

a very different
conclusion than

what the police
autopsies had arrived at.

The pathologist phoned me,
and he said,

"Jim, I finished
the autopsies.

And I'm telling, you now,
it's a double murder."

♪

♪

After I left my conversation
with Dr. Cairns...

I certainly had a
strong sense of...

the scene of the crime.

But It's rare that a
journalist will rely on

just one source
for information.

So, I started looking around
for other people that

I could meet with who had
some knowledge of

the investigation.

♪

People in the investigation
world are very secretive.

They don't want anybody
to know that

they're speaking
to a reporter.

I end up at a coffee shop
with a source that

I will refer to as "Zero".

♪

I can't say who Zero is.

But, Zero is a larger
-than-life character.

Somebody that wants
to share information,

but also wants to be the
leader of that conversation.

♪

How I work in
that situation is,

I go out of my way to tell a
person like Zero what I know,

and specifically
what I don't know...

because I want him
to correct me.

We start having this macabre
conversation about...

ways that people
can hang themselves.

I started telling Zero what
I had heard from my source,

and of course,
I'm not telling him

that it's Dr. Cairns,
but I say,

"Look, they're actually in
a seated position."

And, Zero nodded.

So, I'm thinking, okay,
it's confirmatory,

which is important.

♪

The other thing
we talk about is,

that there's belts
around their neck.

Zero suggests to me that
the belts were just

placed around the neck.

They may not
have killed them.

And, I get a sense that
something else was

the manner of their death,

maybe something thinner
around their neck.

♪

[Hissing steam]

I also say to Zero,

"My understanding
is that their

hands were bound
in front of them, like this."

But then he says
something interesting.

"Yes, there are markings
on their wrists,

but just be careful

how you describe their
hands because...

nobody knows if they
were tied in front

or in behind their back."

A word that's used in our
conversation is "zap strap,"

and a zap strap
is something that

is used to
bind prisoners.

It's like a handcuff.

When somebody
adds more detail,

it helps me assess
their credibility.

I said, "Are they
looking for the ties?"

And he said, you know,
basically,

"They're not gonna find the
ties, they're long gone."

So, my heart's beating
a little more quickly.

I've now talked to
two people

who have involvement
in this case.

I walk away from that meeting
knowing I have a story

that says, according to the
private investigative team,

Barry and Honey
Sherman were murdered.

♪

That goes to press, and
everything explodes.

♪

It's such a big story that
it doesn't even have to say,

'The Shermans"
were murdered.

Everybody knows who
we're talking about.

[News] It's a
bombshell headline.

Today a report in the
Toronto Star says Barry and

Honey Sherman
were murdered.

Kevin Donovan was the
one bringing out all the

information about the
secondary investigation.

A huge shift in the
narrative of this story,

which has really
gone worldwide.

This was all over
TV and radio,

and the competing
newspapers as well.

The Toronto Police
had egg on their face.

And, a week after
our story comes out,

they realize they have to
hold a press conference.

♪

We have sufficient evidence
to describe this as

a double homicide
investigation.

And that both Honey and
Barry Sherman

were in fact targeted.

[News] Investigators confirming
what has already been

in the news for
nearly a week.

It's always baffled me how
it would take that long

to call this a
double homicide.

Shortly after
they were killed,

CTV reached out to me.

The idea that you would...

hang your spouse and then
hang yourself or vice versa...

just never worked for me.

♪

It struck me as I
read about this case,

if you look at the
way they were found,

as it's been described,
in the sitting position,

and then they're propped up
on this railing,

and that's where the
belts are tied to.

But, that position
didn't kill them.

So, that would suggest
that they're already dead.

And they were staged.

You would have to drag
them into that position.

How in the world could
Barry kill his wife,

but then kill himself, and
then stage both of them?

I mean, there was just
nothing about the scene that

even would remotely suggest
that it was a murder-suicide.

♪

The effect of the stories
was to completely change the

course of the Toronto
police investigation into

Barry and Honey
Sherman's death.

[News] Targeted and killed.

Toronto police are now
treating Barry and

Honey Sherman's death
as a double murder.

This debunks earlier
reports of a murder-suicide,

and validates what the
Sherman family

thought all along.

"This conclusion was expressed
by the family from the

outset, and is consistent
with the findings of the

independent autopsy
and investigation."

I've been around
news a long time and,

I'd never seen the police
just change track

following a story
in a newspaper.

Never seen it.

They probably choked on
these words, but they said,

"Yeah, it's murder-murder."
And, Kevin was right.

♪

Given that the police
investigation really doesn't

get going properly
for six weeks,

so much evidence
has been lost.

♪

If, in fact, a decision was
made within a few hours to

call it a
murder-suicide, then,

they don't process
the scene correctly.

Tangible things disappear
like witness interviews,

neighbour interviews,
cameras.

Weeks or months later,
If you really think you have

a double homicide,
it's hard to catch up.

[Kevin] There are two teams
of investigators:

The Sherman private
investigation team...

and the Toronto Police.

And then, there's my
own investigation,

on behalf of the
Toronto Star.

In general, reporters don't
like to be in the story.

Kevin became a part of
the story, legitimately,

because he's finding
out facts that...

it turns out the
police don't know.

[Kevin]
I was given two assignments.

I've done the first part
of my task, which is,

was it murder-suicide
or double homicide?

Now I've got this really
big task: Who done it?

♪

I start thinking, okay,
well, who are their enemies?

I need to know who
they are to see

who might have wanted
to do that to them.

♪

It's most important to
get to the people

who are closest
to the Shermans.

That means their immediate
family, their best friends.

From the very start,

the Sherman family just
did not want to talk,

both to me and
to other media.

They're very private.

They didn't want to have
anything to do with the media.

And same, I would say,
of their friends.

♪

There was a concern in the
Toronto Jewish community that

there's a killer out there
that is targeting

wealthy people of
Jewish descent.

That makes me wonder,
is there a concern that,

with the killer or
killers still at large,

that by talking about
Barry and Honey,

they will be targeted?

I've never had so much
difficulty getting to people

on the inside.

So, I look back at
the Sherman funeral.

I wasn't there,

but I watched the video of
the funeral multiple times.

I wanted to study it,
and learn more about

Barry and
Honey Sherman.

Normally, a funeral of
somebody like Barry and

Honey Sherman would be in

Benjamin's Chapel in Toronto.

It's where many of the
Jewish funerals are held.

Everybody was
thinking, at first,

it was going to be a
small family thing

'cause of the way
that they'd died.

♪

But it got bigger
and bigger.

It was at one of those
places where they have

the conventions
and all of that.

They wanted to make sure
that everybody who was

touched by the Shermans
could be there in person.

[News] Thousands came to
a memorial service in

Mississauga on
December 21,

including Prime Minister
Trudeau,

Premiere Wynne,
and Mayor Tory.

Like, I've never been
at a funeral

with thousands of people.

Some people said, "Aren't
you scared that there may be

an attack on thousands
of people there?"

I said, "No, because
the Prime Minister,

the Mayor, and the Premier
of the province of Ontario

are going to be there.

You'll have police
all around there."

Seated near the front,
all in blue Apotex t-shirts,

are the Apotex staff.

Barry was loved
by his employees.

He treated them with
incredible respect.

He was their leader.

He was the champion.
He was the founder.

And you could
feel the emotions.

Apotex created jobs
for a lot of people,

and gave the Sherman family
the ability to put

a lot back into
the community.

They gave away millions
and millions of their

hard-earned dollars to
change this world.

These people made
a difference.

I saw it with my own eyes.

They were, without question,
the most significant

philanthropists in
the Jewish community,

and to a great extent,

outside the Jewish
community as well.

I feel a great sense
of privilege...

There are eulogies from
Toronto mayor, John Tory,

and Ontario Premier,
Kathleen Wynne,

and other dignitaries,

as well as Barry and
Honey's friends and family.

Mary Shechtman is Honey's
sister and best friend.

We were survivors of the
Holocaust, my family.

And all I had was my mother,
my father, and my sister.

Losing her sister and
her brother-in-law...

and the way she lost them.
She was in shock.

When you go to a funeral,

you may think you know a
particular person,

but you hear things about a
person that you would

never, ever know about.

Of their personal life,
of their family dynamics.

The four children
come up on stage:

Lauren, Jonathon, Kaelen,
and Alexandra.

Jonathan takes the podium.

He basically put a
challenge out there,

and right to the police...

that there's no way that
this was a murder-suicide.

Before we could begin
to grieve as a family,

and recover in a
proper Jewish manner,

we've had to navigate
through a terrifying maze of

non-information and
unfounded speculation.

I was sat in a row with...

a lot of their close,
close personal friends.

We listened to the son,

who condemned
the police there.

That's what really shocked me.

Everybody was shocked.

Jonathan then delivers a
well-scripted eulogy that

he's obviously spent
some time working on.

Our family legacy,
like so many others,

emerged like a phoenix
from the ashes of the

European Holocaust,
shattered and broken,

only to rise and
rebuild and to thrive.

[Sniffling]

In honour of our parents,

we promise to do the
same thing now.

We have pulled together
during this most tragic time.

We are taking some
comfort in knowing...

that you two are
together forever.

I get a better sense of
Barry and Honey Sherman

as parents, friends,
and philanthropists.

And it also becomes
clear to me that

you can't separate
Barry Sherman from Apotex,

the company he'd created.

For 35 years...

I was incredibly
privileged

to work side-by-side,
day-by-day...

[Sighing]
...with Barry.

Barry and Jack Kay

worked in adjoining
offices at Apotex.

They talked about being
almost like brothers.

Barry, I will miss you,
as will all the Apotex-

[Voice breaking]
...fa-family.

I would say that Apotex
was Barry's 5th child.

He had 4 natural children,
that are his own.

His child, of Apotex.

Work was on his mind 24/7.

[Kevin] I know I need to
learn more about

Barry Sherman,
the businessman.

Could a professional
grievance have had

something to do with the
Sherman murders?

Oh, in the
pharmaceutical business,

a lot of people hated Barry.

One of the things about the
murders of Barry and

Honey Sherman is
everybody has a theory.

♪

Very soon after...

Barry and Honey's
bodies were found,

the rumour mill was
working on overdrive.

Across the internet,

there were theories as
bizarre as Bill and

Hillary Clinton were
involved in the murders.

Some people think it could
be a hitman coming over

to do the job
for somebody.

Could this be a
contract killing?

Well, I suppose it could be.

Contract killers...

try to throw people off
as to what's going on.

[Kevin] But who would
take out a contract hit

on the Shermans?

♪

I start googling Barry
Sherman and Apotex.

Apotex is in the business
of generic pharmaceuticals.

And, as I'm searching...

all these lawsuits
started popping up.

When you're litigious,
and litigious in a big way,

you offend people.

That's the way Barry was.

And, Barry got into a lot
of litigious disputes

with pharmaceutical people.

In the world of generic
drug companies,

on a global basis,
Apotex was near the top.

You have to have a lot of
guts to play in the generic

marketplace, and Apotex
was very litigious.

People say Barry Sherman
is one of

the most litigious
people in Canada.

Could a rival or embittered
pharmaceutical company

have possibly been
behind the murders?

First, I needed to understand
the world of generic drugs.

With generic drug
manufacturers,

they're trying to...

copy patents held by
other drug manufacturers.

I worked with my
father as a lawyer,

and Barry's name
would come up.

My dad had a client who
had issues with Barry.

And, for Barry's
company, Apotex,

that's part of the
business model,

is to take these patents,
modify to a certain degree

the drug composition,
and then sell them.

Barry would look at a drug,

and looked at how can he

formulate the product
in a different way?

Barry did astrophysics and
aeronautical engineering

as his degrees.

He didn't take chemistry
and pharmaceutical sciences.

But Barry knows everything
about formulations of

pharmaceuticals because
he's absolutely brilliant.

The companies that
hold the patents are

claiming patent
infringement,

and there's always litigation
between the generic drug

manufacturer and the company
that holds the patent.

You couldn't frighten Barry

by telling him you're
going to sue him...

because Barry
knew more

than his lawyer.

He didn't go to law school,

but Barry was
the chief lawyer.

He's a strategist. He
knows how to play people.

He knows how to play the
rules and procedures.

That's the intellectual
challenge...

that Barry was
really good at.

If you can figure out the
loopholes, and if,

legally, you could
get away with it,

the opportunity
would be massive,

in the hundreds of millions
of dollars, because

you're taking from the brand
name sales immediately.

[Kevin] By 2015,
2016, 2017...

Apotex is really doing well.

$1.6 billion in revenue.

The big pharmaceutical
companies were saying,

"Hang on a second, we've
spent so much money and

time with R&D to
create these drugs.

And then Barry Sherman
gets to sell our drug?

That's not fair."

Believe me, the brand
companies do not like it.

They hate it.

[Murray] Barry was a guy
that liked action.

And if you're
looking for action,

you're going to get it
because the

brand name companies
are out to...

slit your throat.

[Kevin] Taking what I know
about the crime scene,

does the manner of their
death offer any clues about

the identity of the
killer or killers?

Barry and Honey Sherman
are seated side-by-side,

belts around their neck.

Without a shadow of doubt,

they were posed
in that position.

This was just a setup
to confuse everything,

because this guy
was a professional.

One thing you always
have to focus on is

what logically makes
sense in a case.

You're talking about
potentially assaulting

two different people.

Subduing them,
tying them up.

And ultimately, putting a
ligature around them and

killing them.

What I just described is going
to take a lot of minutes.

Why would you do all
of that, if in fact,

you just wanted
to kill them

when you could shoot them
in about 10 seconds?

Believe me, the brand
companies do not like the

generic drug companies.

But it's part of business.

A pharmaceutical company,

they're not going to engage
a professional killer.

Imagine being at
a board meeting,

and having the
ES Officer saying,

"Ah, yes, we just arranged
for the assassination of

our number one
generic competitor."

That is not going to fly.

It would be a comedy fest,
quite frankly.

Companies do not do this...

because guess what?
Apotex still exists.

The organization has
a life to its own.

So, to me...

a brand company would have
absolutely no reason to kill.

Ever, ever, ever.

Is it possible? Sure.

Is it likely?
It's my professional opinion,

it's not likely that this is
a contract killing.

[Kevin] There's another
theory of the case.

People have
speculated that

this is a crime
of retribution,

that somebody is
mad at Barry and...

they feel that maybe Barry
has done something

horrible to them.

They want to do something
horrible to Barry.

The autopsy shows that...

Barry and Honey had their
wrists bound at some point.

A whole bunch of
questions arise from that.

My guess would be that the
tying of the hands

was just to subdue them.

You bind both hands so
they can't fight back.

And then, perhaps, the...

the killer, or killers, force
them into the pool area and

brought them down there
because they wanted to have

a conversation with
them before they died.

Maybe told them why
they were doing it.

And the reason you
do that, obviously,

is you want them to suffer.

This is a big-time personal
way to kill people.

The belts around their neck,

perhaps that was strictly to
keep them upright...

as a shock factor,

when somebody walks
in to find them.

It's just one more
step of sort of...

poking the victims
in the eye.

This crime just reeks
of somebody they know,

and maybe even someone-
someone very close to them.

I start thinking, okay,
well, out of the people

who are really close
to the Shermans,

who would do that?

I thought I might find
perhaps somebody who

believes that they've been
wronged by Barry Sherman.

They don't like
what he's doing.

They don't like how
he's treating them.

And they're angry.

whoever killed them.

These two people died
a horrific death,

and what they must
have gone through,

we'll never understand.

I felt like David going up
against Goliath.

I've never seen that before.

cutting off Barry Sherman's

head, rolling it
down the parking lot.

If it was a TV movie, this
would be your prime suspect.

I need to find out,

where was he on the
night of the murders?
