When these lights went on,
it was just like, bam,

right in my face.

Welcome to the
Hazard's Gingerbread House.

Our house...

...is delicious enough
to eat.

Everyone knows
the gingerbread house here.

It's 3 1/2 inches
or seven squares.

I would describe my dad's work
on the house

as methodical,
incredibly precise.

Horizontally,

it's 2 1/2 inches.

And a little mad.

We have
the traditional squares,

but I'd like to change it up
just a little bit.

When I started
the gingerbread house display,

I wanted it to be magical,
enchanting.

So everything is detailed.
It's calculated.

For instance, when I work
on my Christmas trees,

it's about
a 30-to-40-hour endeavor.

I can't tell you
how many squares I've counted

in the last 34 years.

14 cookie cutters.

And paper clips.

I have about 12,000,
13,000, 14,000 paper clips.

That's Crazytown.

What took you
13,000 paper clips,

we accomplished with three.
Oh, my.

We do make fun of our dad,
but, you know, we are proud of,

like, everything
he's done with the house.

But we'll never admit that
to anybody.

These trees are so cool!

This is called
"hardware cloth."

I bend the metal,
I make a frame out of it,

and then individually wire
each light onto the frame.

Really is impressive. You have
a lot of trees here, too.

And I couldn't even imagine
making one of these.

These trees are brilliant.

Now, can we talk about
the candy canes a little bit?

My pride and joy.
Are they really?

Oh, they really are.

I've seen a lot
of candy canes in my day,

but yours look
pretty spectacular.

We made them out
of PVC pipe,

and what I discovered is,
as I was painting,

the overburden from the red
went on to the white,

and it looks like
a classic candy cane.

Yeah. And you had to color
these lights and all the cords,

and it looks perfect.

And you had to do that,
I mean, on these lollipops, too.

So let me show you

my Colorado flag-inspired
lollipops.

You give a little nod
to Colorado.

Yeah, I could
show you.

- Oh, that is so cool.
- You gotta represent.

I mean,
it's really spectacular.

about this.

I mean,
this is so phenomenal.

When these lights went on,
it was just like, bam!

You specifically made
every light --

whether it's facing in or out
or up or down,

you have them laid out at
a certain degree, certain angle,

which makes it
so pleasing to the eye,

which is really cool.

When you look
at these panels here,

there's 12 of them
that go across.
Yeah.

My idea was to frame
the garage.

Sure, it's like a nice little
perimeter effect...
Exactly.

...but that also resembles icing
on a gingerbread house.

It does. When you have icing
on the edges like this,

it's actually called
"gingerbreading."

Oh, gingerbreading?
It is, yes.

I would expect you to know
a lot about gingerbread houses.

You would think, yeah.

I mean, the attention to detail
is so incredible.

This is actually a sleeve
that fits over the shutter.

to layer things and add texture,

We're going to start
with just the house.

So our display is
a drone display.

We use 400 drones,
send them 400 feet in the air,

create 300-foot-wide images

that people are going to be able
to see for five miles.

Of course, we got to end
with "Merry Christmas."

It's still something
so many people haven't seen

that it really wows them
when they see it.

I know you're nervous.
I'm a little nervous, too.

But you've really been
putting in the hours.

I'm so,
so incredibly proud of you.

So to make a drone show,

there's so much legwork
that goes into it.

You have to get the licensing

and the approvals
to even be able to do one.

I think we're doing
six formations.

And then, also,
you have to animate the display,

and that takes
hundreds of hours.

So we've been spending about
the last three months,

late nights, early mornings.

And a few all-nighters.

Just a few.

We like to consider ourselves
innovators in this space.

You guys think you got

What I was amazed about
when I saw these lights come on,

everything was so clean
and really put together nicely.

There are eight matrices
on the house.

It's impressive
how you did it.

But when people are talking
to you about this,

do they get so excited
'cause they just want

- to go see the drones?
- Yeah, pretty much.

Yeah, they do.

Let's go back
and look at those.

That's what I really
want to look at.

Oh, this is where
the magic happens.

So, here is where we design
the drone show.

So we create 3D models
of all the shapes,

and then we essentially map
the drones to them.

So each dot is a drone.

And I'm making sure

they don't run into
each other,

I'm programing
what color during what time.

How do you make them
not hit?

So, in the air,
the drones don't know

there's another drone
next to it.
Yeah.

All they know
is where they are.
Right.

And we've programmed
every single drone

to never intersect
with another one.

They stay six feet apart
at all times.

Can we actually go see
the drones and, like...?

Yeah, we can see
the drones.

It's just so cool to see

It's got a sophisticated GPS.

So we can get a centimeter
accuracy in the drone...

...so they know exactly where
they should be in 3D space.

This was definitely a first

for "The Great
Christmas Light Fight."

I wasn't expecting to come
to Keller, Texas,

and see one of the most
unique things

that this competition
has ever seen.

You did not oversell
this at all.

I love light shows when you get
immersed into the light show.

This one is so unique
because it takes your senses

over to another level.

It's so impressive.

It's really incredible what
you guys are able to create.

I mean, not only was
your house fantastic,

but then when
the drones came up,

I mean, wow, so impressive.

And that drone experience --

Wow! I've never had a VR
experience like that in my life.

And it means so much to us that
you were able to come out here

the things we can really do

We have nine animatronics
and over 16 inflatables,

including the big man
that sits over 40 feet tall.

New this year -- a full tail
section of a cargo aircraft

off the side of our house.

It's going to have

And we've added a very special
surprise for Carter,

where he may get his pilot's
license this year.

That is the elf

That's fantastic.

There's a lot of movable things
I'm seeing on here,

like the elf toy wrapper.

Oh, wow. The reindeer
flight simulator academy.

Wow.

This is the main runway
of the North Pole Airport.

It is 72 feet long
from the end.

It's got these PVC aircraft,
and they're 16 1/2 feet long.

And each one is suspended there
to give the illusion of motion,

but they're staked down
on either side.

Was this the trickiest part
in the entire display?

No. You're close to it,
though.

This is probably
the trickiest thing we added.

Oh!
This is the tail end of
a cargo plane that is servicing

the North Pole airport,
made out of PVC,

but it is suspended
on a steel frame.

Oh, my gosh.
And that supports
the weight of it.

I had to use, like, math
that I haven't used

since high school,
and I swore to that teacher

I was never going to use it.
Yeah.

Guess what -- I used it.
And here you go.

I assume we get to talk about
the control tower.

I love the glass

and the computer screen
and the background.

Every good airport needs
to communicate with people.

So why the phone?
What's happening?

You got to listen
to the airplanes.

Santa 1, affirmative.

We're equipped and active.

So you are listening now

to the actual radio traffic
communication between Santa,

the other aircraft
around the North Pole,

and the controllers inside of
the elf traffic control tower.

That's really awesome.

So you get to hear Santa
on approach,

asking for clearance to land.

That is so cool.

From smoke to the fire truck.

It's important to have fire
and rescue at the airport.

It's also interactive.

This is three different
interactive parts.

The first one is the button on
the right there marked wheels.

The elf toy wrapper

of all these animatronics,

that's the part that I like.

The motors from these actually
came from those infomercial --

the middle of the night,
the rotisserie chicken roasters.

Gary definitely thinks
outside the box.

He uses rotisserie chicken
motors.

It's crazy what somebody can use
to make a Christmas display.

This is actually the backside
of the arm,

the welders arm
that goes back and forth.

Hmm, time to wake up.

I've always wanted to be
the beacon

of the neighborhood
for Christmas.

I'm the house you go to if
you want to see a big display.

Oh, deer.

Nice hot shorts, buddy.

Oh, the craziest part
of my display.

That would have to be
the recycled Halloween skeleton.

One, two, three.

I know it's
a little nontraditional,

but that's always been my style.

I got most of the table built.

But the best part of my display?

I would say it would have to be
the model village.

Just working
on the train track.

That's what takes me
the most effort to make,

and I think I get
the most reaction from that.

Big surprise at the end.

I do my display all by myself.

I've got plenty of people
who offer to help me.

You're going to help me out?

But I've always made it
a point to do it myself.

Krampus, come to life.

If I won the $50,000,
oh, my gosh, what would I do?

I haven't really thought
that far

because I'm just glad to be
in the competition.

I felt like
I already won already.

is that I'm a one-person team.

Main thing is, we need something
in the neighborhood

for all the kids.

We need a beacon
of Christmas somewhere, so...

And you are the beacon.

I mean, with this outfit,
you're definitely the beacon.

Oh, I definitely have
to be.

So there's some quirky stuff
out there.

that's a little nontraditional,
but the kids like it, I keep it.

Alright, well, how do we get
this show started?

Let's see if this little
Christmas detonator

is going to have
a little effect here.

Okay, so it's like a TNT.
Yeah.

This arch --
I imagine, like, kids

will just come through here,
hanging out,

because it feels like
a bouncy house. It really does.

You need an entrance
to walk through --

the Christmas victory arch.
Yeah, that's good.

That's a good way
of saying it.

Well, let's take a closer look,
shall we?

Absolutely.

How tall is that drummer boy
up there?

Oh, that's a good 20 foot.

That looks like way taller
than 20 feet.

I love this. I mean,
this is so lifelike, it's crazy.

That's called
a 3D-form projection.

So it's basically
an inflatable,

and I just draped
a screen over it,

and the projection is made
to fit on that inflatable.

It feels like
it's real.

It's a projection
you could hug if you wanted.

You kind of want to hug a lot
of stuff in this whole display.

Pick your eyes up
above the door.

Yeah,
That's
the stained glass window.

That's really cool.
A projection.

It morphs to, like, six
different stained glass windows.

These projections
are fantastic.

I love all of this action
that's happening here.

The moon up top.

That's always a fun one
to put on the roof.

Yeah.
Yep. I made that myself.

But I've had that moon
for a few years,

and it's always
the centerpiece.

I love that.
Yeah.

Now, come over here
a little bit.

So if you look down,
that is the Krampus.

You know the Krampus at all?

Oh, yes.
You better be good.

And if you're not good,
the legend is,

you get hit with sticks.

I mean, he's a little scary
with those claws and the horns.

But you know what?
He's got a smile on his face.

These guys, these skeletons --
I mean, come on.

I like to recycle
my Halloween into Christmas.

And the kids, they all love it.

A good chunk of the year,
you can actually leave them up

in your yard.
Oh, yeah.
And they get dressed up

for each holiday. So this is
their Christmas outfits.

Where do you get a Christmas hat
for a skeleton that big?

Oh, well, I do
a little bit of sewing.

I made the hats.

And the little shawls
are Christmas tree skirts.

Oh, that's smart.
I love that.
Yeah.

And then it's California,

so they got to have
the hot shorts.

You know,
they're scary creatures.

But you know what? That beard --
You're not so tough, buddy.

Neither are you guys.

Of course. Just for you.

You know, there is one more
tiny thing to show you.

I kind of forgot, but...

What is happening?

This is amazing!

Fed, this is awesome.

Yup. That's the model village.
This is crazy cool.

So I've been building this up
for the past five years.

This is the main centerpiece,
which takes me the longest...

I can imagine.
...out of the whole display.

My gosh. You got, like,
a little theme park

going on over here,
and then the train.

This is so great.
The ice skaters.

I remember when I was a kid,
there was a guy's garage,

and the whole thing
was a train set.

So ever since I was
a little kid, I was like,

you know, when I get older,

I got to do
the whole Christmas village,

like I saw in that guy's garage
when I was a kid.

Because you remembered it.
Yeah.

That was my inspiration
for this.

Villages are so great because
however old you are,

it takes you,
transforms you to another place.

I just love seeing this stuff
out of the closets

and back out for everybody
to see.

It's a good feeling.

This was a great surprise.

One of the great things
about Fed's display is that

he has so many different styles
and themes working,

whether it's, like,
the classical village,

the great big skeletons
that are really scary yet fun.

And I love
all the 3D projections.

He's figured out how to make all
of these different things work.

that I wanted
to just jump into it.

Most importantly, it's the heart
that he puts into it.

It shows up all over the place.

But I've seen
four amazing displays,

but only one can be the champion

of "The Great

from New City, New York,

turned their passion
for aviation

into an interactive
holiday airport.

that their love of Christmas

was sky high.

Winter Wonderland

was a one-man show.

And it made me feel like a kid
