in the deepest
amazonian jungles of Peru,

taking on the hardest of...

Survival and physical
challenges on the planet.

It is a bummer that
I lost two partners.

You know, the Amazon
just beat them down.

The elements, the
bugs, the weather,

um, the jungle,

just kind of took
it away from them.

But,

you know, that being
said, I still have a mission

and I still have a challenge.

So I'm getting my
firewood stash ready

to get the day started.

[Bleep].

Looks like a coach whip.

Oh, yeah.

That's solid
protein right there.

Look at that...

Whoa!

That was intense.

You never know with the Amazon,

looks like, I got a
coach whip here.

Um...

Non-venomous.

It's about to, uh,

shed actually, if you
can kind of see the...

Kind of shadow
glaze on his eyes,

that's when you know
they're about to shed,

that's probably why

I was a little quicker
than he was, but...

[Michael] Three miles north...

Hey, Waz, we got
a bunch of cordage.

Oh, look at that.

We got to get the
shelter done properly.

[Michael] Rod and Waz's
goal of day 40 is in doubt,

after poisoned tree sap
forced XL veteran Gary

to be medically removed
from the challenge.

I got to go. I got to
go to the hospital.

[Michael] And black flies
have ravaged Waz's feet.

I've welts, I have...

Blood dripping down everywhere.

[Intense music playing]

How's your feet?

Same as before.

At the bottom half
of my shin my ankle,

and then pretty
much my entire foot

there's a lot of
swelling happening.

I'm having trouble moving
my ankle, moving my feet.

And it's painful at times,

but it's just difficult to move
around, difficult to walk.

So, I'm just gonna do the
job that I know I have to get do

that don't involve
my feet too much.

Jobs around the camp,
collecting firewood, boiling water

and then working on the shelter.

Those are the jobs that have to happen,
and those are jobs I can do pretty safely.

[Rod] So, do you want me to
down and work on the dock?

I'd like to get the hole
to where we can fish.

[Waz] Do you need help
down there with anything?

- Um, I'll tell you, let me try to see if I can move them.
- All right.

Just let me know.

[Rod] I'm loving my partner Waz.

I'm having a blast with him

and we are really like-minded
on what we want to accomplish

out here on this challenge.

This stuff is really heavy,
so you can't really fish

because of all the
vegetation that's floating,

we have no way
to get down to them.

I think our best bet's to get that
clear and just have a hole to fish in.

The last challenge I
had in South Africa,

my teammates were
literally about as far

as the opposite scale
from me as you can get.

[Rod] You don't want to
burn that it's the wrong wood.

Don't sit here and talk
to me like you're my dad.

- Okay? 'Cause that's what it feels like.

[Rod] So, it's really nice
to have Waz as my partner.

To me, completing the 40-day
challenge is the pinnacle.

You have to be a team player

everybody has to have that unity

and you have to
thrive as a group,

not as an individual.

And I think Waz and I,

we're gonna rock this challenge.

[Waz] Rod's building
the fishing pontoon.

We gotta build a
pontoon that goes out.

Then we're gonna
dig away the lilies

and set a framework
up in the water.

So, we have
essentially just a hole

in the lilies that we can
drop the fishing line into

and catch the stuff
that's on the bottom.

And the thing
that sucks in this...

This thing, I'm
not a fan of spiders

and this is...

Covered with spiders.

When you get into the water,
obviously there's anacondas,

you have your vipers and
different snakes that can hurt you.

So, it's extremely important

to understand the dangers and
how you're gonna overcome those,

especially when they
want to take a bite out of you

'cause you're dinner.

Everything is
harder in the jungle.

It's pretty awesome.

[Michael] Six miles
south, XL veteran Amber

led her team to
their first food win.

Yeah!

A family meal for breakfast.

[Michael] But Jen has
had trouble acclimating

to the brutal Amazon.

[Retching]

Are you feeling a little better?

I feel a lot better today.

So, yesterday I was
feeling pretty sick.

Had to stop quite a bit,
threw up about four times.

Luckily, I feel like
I'm getting over that.

Let's get some full
bellies and hydrate today.

Maybe we can get some good
fish, set up a couple of lines,

and try to get some
more protein for us to eat.

[Trish] I haven't worked with a
hook and line on a challenge yet,

so I'm looking to
learn more from them

and help out my team with fish.

- We've got some strong women out here.
- Correct.

[Amber] Today, I'm really
excited, I am going to

go fishing with the girls.

Jen needs this food
so bad right now,

so we're gonna get her fed.

And then Trish is
a fisher lady too.

And this is a perfect moment

where I can actually
teach Jen how to fish.

So that way,

when it comes to taking turn
fishing, we can all do it and contribute,

which is what it
takes to be a team.

- What?
- I got a leech on me.

Well, let's use it for bait.

Oh, my gosh!

[Michael] Many
leeches in the Amazon

have multiple rows of teeth

and can suck ten times
their weight in blood.

With leeches ripping it off

can leave my skin with an
infection with their teeth in there still,

depending on how
long it's been on me.

So, we got to
pull it off properly.

Oh, my god!

- It's like pulling my skin.
- Oh, my god!

Oh, my god!

Oh, my, it's already latched
on to my thumb, yeah.

Okay, I'm gonna
go um, try to get fish.

We're really hoping for
her to get her first fish

they like to play with you

as soon as they pull your line,
give it a second 'cause they trick you,

and then they get
off the damn hook.

learning with fishing,

but I know that I'm
getting into a groove

and it's really fun to head
out there with Amber and Trish

and contribute to
our meals for the day.

Feels awesome to have

a team like this that
are strong, innovative,

and everybody has a lot
of heart and determination.

is kicking some ass.

these girls to day 40

and me to day 60.

the early loss of a teammate

I could feel all of my body
there's no escape from it.

[Michael] But rebounded
with a much needed food win

This is the biggest

I've had on any
challenge so far.

There's a whole
palm forest up here.

Exactly the type of leaves
we need for our shelter.

Really need these
giant palm leaves

for roofing materials.

Our shelter is not waterproof.

If we can get a better roof

it'll keep the smoke in
and the bugs out and let us

enjoy our time out
here a little bit more.

We're improving
our shelter every day,

which I think you
really have to do

in order to make it to the end.

[Kaila] This is gonna
be good for the shelter.

So, happy that I have, like, such
a positive hardworking partner.

You know, when you're
in a situation like this,

it gets brutal.

push comes to shove,

it gets super wet.

coals in my water pot,

in this tarantula infested

jungle tree in the
middle of the Amazon.

I'm not happy about it.

We all saw what
was in this tree.

I don't like giant,
you know, arachnids

jumping on my face.

This is all I have.

[Thundering]

[Steven] I'm gonna grab
some bedding right now.

Last night, first
night, ever alone

on any of my challenges
on Naked and Afraid.

It rained for a long time.

Everything was just soaked.

You know, I don't have
a roof on my shelter

'cause I don't have
the resources right now.

So I crawled into
this little side nook

of our jungle mother tree

and, uh, it was dry.

I mean, it did the job.

I mean, no giant
you know, arachnids

jumping on my face, yet.

Oh, [bleep].

That looks like a
bullet ant right there.

So, they call it a bullet ant

because when it bites you,

it's supposed to
feel like you got shot

by a bullet.

So, I want to put
him far away from me.

That's what I'm
going to do, 'cause...

I'm already hurt and I don't
need to feel like I've been shot.

Hey little guy, nature
Karma, I'm just...

I just hope there's not a
whole colony of them in there.

[Trish] So, I'm
looking for y sticks

to add to my bed, I
need a raised bed.

I don't believe I got
any sleep last night.

It rained all night.
We were wet all night.

So, Jen and I have
decided to build

elevated platform beds,
so we can hopefully

stay warm, dry

and, uh not be stuck in the mud.

I'm trying to use
bamboo as my...

As my braces.

Solid sleep, even
if it's an hour,

out in these
conditions, is huge.

I'm gonna get food.

[Amber] While Trish
and Jen build beds,

I'm going to go to the water.

I'm going to set up my
fishing lines right now

because as a team, we
have to divide and conquer.

I call it the golden hour.

As soon as I wake up, I'm
gonna start going fishing.

That's when they hit the most.

two of these holes

that are like body width
wide. My idea for this bed

is to raise it a little
bit off the ground,

so that I am not directly
in the dirt and the mud.

I don't want the rain to
take me out of this challenge

like it did my last.

I'm gonna... have a couple posts

and wrap it and
weave it with vine.

[Amber] Looks like I got bait
still, so I'm gonna do it again

and hopefully, I
catch another one.

Conquer and divide
is the way to survive.

If one person is fishing,
the other person has to be

working on the
shelter, getting water

and another person
getting firewood.

[Kaila] I burnt the center
of my foot, really bad,

which is making it more
difficult for me to walk.

- [Kaila] Gotta sit down for a minute.

[Kaila] I woke up this morning.

My foot's, like, swollen,

and it's pussing,
and it's all gross, so...

I'm just hoping that
everything's okay

and it's nothing too serious

my mental strength is definitely
my biggest asset out here.

I'm very stubborn.

I can't just sit still
and stay in bed,

while Dan goes and
does all the work.

I'm gonna walk around
and I wanna help out.

I'm all about doing this doc

like, I think that's gonna
be such a good idea.

[Dan] I really like Kaila.

I really enjoy her as a person

and her company and her skills.

giant planks then, as the dock

- that we found yesterday.

sticks 'cause that mud's so deep.

We know the big fish in here

are living around
these fallen trees stuff.

Kaila and I are gonna
try to build a dock.

We're gonna try to
get a log or something,

have it rest right
on that downed tree,

put some posts

to sort of, just brace
up the downed tree,

right where, we're
gonna put the dock onto it.

This stuff all looks good.

So, you want to grab one

we walk away from the river,

there's a few streams
and creeks and stuff.

So, rod's gonna see

where they come together
into a bigger body of water

and see if we can
find somewhere to fish.

- There's this big, big ol' huge spider.

If that's what I think
it is, that's poisonous.

Don't let it get you.

- Where is it?

[Waz] No, it's not even big.

spider, to me that's a big spider.

I don't have those
in my house that size.

Maybe if it's mum or dad see it,

then we could have
this same conversation.

mom's or dad was here,

I'd let you be here
and I'd move away.

poisonous spider,

I don't want it right
next to our camp.

[Waz] Do you know how many poisonous
spiders are in this jungle, right?

They're everywhere in here, man.

So, there's not really anything
you're gonna be able to do about.

It's up to you. You wanna

[Rod] Yeah, I'd rather kill it.

[Waz] All right, buddy,

I hate to kill something
that we're not eating,

but I don't want
it in my shelter.

This is risk versus reward.

kind of, freaks me out.

She can't move her
ankle's all messed up.

I did my 21-day, mostly alone.

And I hate being alone so much.

I don't wanna lose Kaila.

stuff down to the water.

You know, my biggest fear

in these challenges,
by far is being alone.

Biggest fear.

So, I'm doing everything I can

to keep her in
the challenge now.

[Kaila] My foot just is
so swollen and so sore

and I'm trying to be
the best teammate I can

and it's hard. It's exhausting.

[Bleep].

It's beautiful.

That whipping method,
I swear, works well.

It is long.

[Michael] Although not poisonous,
this full grown whip snake

will yield almost two pound
of meat and over 800 calories.

- Yeah.

Dan's doing great. He's just, like,
always on the go. It's awesome.

So happy that I have, like, such

keep Kaila's head in
the game a little bit more.

in the little fishing
hole that rod made.

It's just set up perfectly
for what we wanna do.

We're both hungry.
We haven't really eaten.

I mean, we had a
couple of snails yesterday

but it's not been
anything substantial.

This is an untested hole.

I don't know how
this is gonna go,

but I'm gonna try and throw
a couple of lines in there

and tie 'em off and see
if I can catch anything.

I've come to cleanse the pool.

As you can see...

It'd be pretty hard
fishing in this river

because every time you
cast, it's gonna land on top.

That's really thick
with water lilies.

Now, we have this clear little
patch of water that we can fish in

making life a little
bit easier for us.

Gonna stick the
stick in the ground,

throw the line out there,
let it sink and let it sit.

They're gonna be passive lines.

So, I wanna make
sure I'm using a knot

that's gonna stay...

Tied to this stick, even
if a big fish gets on.

Clove hitches are not that

as it gets pulled on, it
actually tightens itself.

Everywhere you go,
fishing is different.

It's different fishing for
barramundi in Australia

it is fishing for salmon
or bass elsewhere.

They're all different. They've
all got their own nuances.

What I like to do
is taking my time

sort of learn the best ways.

It's just a case of learning

the water system,
learning the fish.

It's all about problem solving
and getting an end result.

All right. Let's get
this guy baited up.

So, I got it hooked up
there. He's ready to go.

Couple of bites on this one.

The fish is nibbling
at my bait in the water

and a cormorant comes
down, dives in the water

and takes the fish right
before it took my bait

what are the chances of that

it's a beautiful
part of nature and...

Just one of those things.

Control you controlables

is one of the things
with surviving.

That's uncontrollable. There's
nothing I could have done about that.

I'm not gonna let
it get me down.

I'll let it get me down then
something else that is controllable

might go by the wayside

and then it's gonna
hurt me even more so...

So, you let things happen.

What's meant to
be will find its way.

You try and compete with nature,

you got a thing comin'.

It's not gonna go the way
you think it's gonna go.

I'm just gonna
set this last bait up

and I'm just gonna
throw 'em in the water.

This trail looks like
it's a game trail, so...

I'm a Kansas boy, born
and raised in Wichita

and out in the country, we
don't see anything like this.

First time I've been
in the jungle hunting

and this is extremely difficult.

Only thing you can do is
stalk or if you can find a den,

you can lay up on the den and
wait for something to come in.

But if I get lucky enough, um,

to be able to take a shot
on an animal, I'm taking it.

There's water there.

It's a stream.

It'd be awesome if
there's a caiman in there.

Let's go see if there's
an electric eel in it.

Oh, look at there.

There's tons of fish in there.

Must be a perfect
spot for an eel to be

or a big old catfish
stuck in there.

There is one.

There's only a
little fish like that,

but I would've
taken it at this point.

because the most
important thing is your shelter,

especially in the rainforest

we can't predict
the weather here

when it's gonna rain.

And so, my mindset
as a survivalist

is focusing on the basics
food, water, fire, shelter.

Always make sure that roof over
your head is secure, no matter what.

I'm gonna go get
some palm frond for us.

I am worried that they're
using too many palm fronds

as their, for their bed though.

'Cause, I mean, like
half of our palm fronds

have been put
down for their beds.

And I'm like, we
need those for the roof.

I have to be supportive
of my partners,

but we really have to keep
layering those palm fronds

to make sure that we're
protected from the rain.

Those are great palms.

as much as I can

to at least sleep tonight
and be comfortable.

tempur-pedic style bed

All morning.

I've seen this dwarf caiman

splash around this
same area all morning,

and it's the first time I was
able to get a visual on him.

He's in his territory.
He's in water.

Uh, 90% chance
he's gonna get away,

but 10% chance, food.

[Michael] Averaging
four to five feet.

Dwarf caiman are known for
their speed and aggression,

making them a
deadly threat on land,

but especially in water

where they pull their
prey below the surface,

unable to escape.

I have heard them the past
three days, so maybe I can...

Rig something up
to catch him too.

So, I'm basically

making an alligator rig,

like, I did in Louisiana,

but I'm making it for a
dwarf caiman instead here so.

These caiman really don't get
more than like, three or four feet.

And, uh, this...

50-pound braid...

Should work just fine.

And, um...

A whole bunch of
these snake guts on here

from that coach whip I got,

and I'm hoping
he can swallow it.

Same principle as
catching an alligator.

Wait till they
completely swallow it.

Uh, the hook gets in their gut,

pull them to shore
and finish them off easy.

Looks like a pretty tasty
meal if that was a little...

Amazonian dinosaur.

I'm gonna go out about
seven or eight feet.

It tends to be where
he's been hanging out.

I'm gonna hang
this above the water.

And, uh, I'm
gonna tie it to shore

and hopefully we'll get some...

It's hard to say whether
that's the perfect place to fish.

It's pretty tough
to catch a fish

in water you can't see in.

This is, sort of, just something
we have to play by ear.

I went down this trail it
looked like a game trail.

Big animals, but I did find,

uh, oh, what I call a creek

or just a probably ten,
twelve foot wide strip of water.

walking up and looking up
and see if I can find any eel.

Didn't find that or any caiman.

I took a shot at
a couple of fish.

- Hmm.
- I think, that's another waterhole.

But, we can see the fish.
Here, you can't see the fish.

What fish did you see?

- Like a bass, it looked like a large mouth.
- Oh, how big was it?

- Um, there was two of them about that long.
- Yeah, nice.

- Yeah. So, I mean, maybe...
- How far a walk is that?

Um, probably about 30 minutes.

I don't know how
significant it is.

You don't want to
hike a mile to get food,

but he thinks
there's fish out there

and we might be able
to get some fish to eat.

the bugs here are killing me.

the amount of welts that I have.

I mean, it's just

thousands of them.

It's brutal.

on. It's completely saturated.

The mosquitoes are
there day and night.

The black flies are
there day and night.

And I feel like there's

too many things living over
by mother tree right now.

Um, and most of them
seem to be feeding off of me.

So, I got to change tactics.

Uh, I've come in over
to a more open area.

It's got an opening
in the canopy

where it's gonna
heat up the ground.

It's going to get rid of
all that water and mud,

which gets rid of the
flies and the bugs.

Um, it's not quite
as picturesque,

but you know what? I will take

no blood sucking insects

over a post card
any day of the week.

What I'm doing,
I got three trees.

I'm gonna use them,
as like, natural posts

that the jungle gave me.

Uh, I'm gonna do my
standard elevated platform

right in the middle, right now.

So, it's gonna be about a foot
and a half, two feet off the ground.

I'm gonna put my
fire right here for now.

I gotta get new bedding.

Just being over here, there's a
thousand times less biting bugs.

So, hopefully

I'll get some good rest tonight.

so hard to stay positive.

But my foot is just killing me.

It's so swollen that

My body is just so beaten down.

So, then we can pull that out

and we can use that for fishing.

They actually don't taste bad

but today I'd rather

If we ate that, what,
we've got like eight calories.
