My father worked for a lumber
company and had a horse-drawn cart.

We were nine brothers and sisters,
six girls and three boys.

When l was 14,
I used to go out with my girlfriends.

l met Dondinho
on one of these outings.

Dondinho was in the army.

We started going out
and a year later we were married.

l was 15 years old.

When l was 16,
l was pregnant with my first child.

-lt was a normal pregnancy.
-Was it really normal, Mum?

There were little inconveniences
sometimes, you know?

A head butt, kicks in the belly...

l thought to myself, ''There's going
to be a footballer around here.''

Mum, what did the midwife say
when Dico was born?

She told me to be very careful
with this child,

that he was going to be a special child
who would make me very proud.

was born on October 23, 1940,
in Tr�s Cora��es.

His father admired Thomas Edison,
inventor of the electric bulb.

That's where Edson came from,
Edson Arantes do Nascimento.

He grew up watching
his father play football.

All l could say
was that he didn't need to cry

because l was going to win

in the Bauru region,

and Tim, Bangu's coach at the time,
wanted to take him to Rio.

l didn't let him

So he was invited to play
for Noroeste in Bauru.

Waldemar got mad

because he was worried
that team would weaken his skills,

and he thought it was better

to go to Santos Football Club
than to stay with Noroeste in Bauru.

But l didn't want him
to go anywhere or be a football player.

So they stayed all night trying
to convince you to let him go to Santos.

Thank God, Celestinha!

NARRATOR: Pel� was 15 years old

when he arrived at Vila Belmiro
on August 8, 1956.

at the right time.

and was treated like an adult.

the chance to play with the first team.

lt was a friendly match
against Corinthians from Santo Andr�.

l was on the bench for the first half.

ln the second half,
l replaced Del Vecchio,

and l soon scored my first goal
wearing the Santos jersey.

And the goalkeeper from Santo Andr�
made a business card later that said,

''Zaluar, goalkeeper, Pel�'s first goal.''

the first great opportunity,

teams and four Brazilian teams,

l felt something pulling in my groin.

But l still forced myself.

a serious injury in his career,

had sprained a muscle,

leaving the whole country
quite apprehensive.

PfLEUR: l did some tests
trying to stretch my legs,

but when l tried moving to the side,
it was a serious problem.

that nothing serious happened

to this incredible player...

ln those days,
the treatment was a hot compress,

an ointment used at the time
and hot towels.

After a couple of days,
l started to feel better.

l started walking on the pitch
and training again.

that l consider

one of the most beautiful of my career,
but it was never recorded.

The most beautiful goal from Pel�
that l saw was against Juventus.

The match was on August 2, 1959.

The place was really crowded.

lt was touching to see
because we didn't have that many fans.

But he wasn't doing very well that day.

And he disappeared in the game.

l don't know why the Juventus fans,
who weren't like that,

started to provoke him.

For a free kick that went awry.

-And he made a gesture.
