Hi, I"m Jane Fonda,

and I want to give you
a brief introduction

to this documentary
in order to put it

Official YIFY movies site:
YTS.MX

in its historical context.

Histories of the Vietnam war
all mention

the widespread anti-war movement

that was centered on campuses.

What most histories
don't tell you

is that an equally widespread
and powerful movement

against the war existed
inside the military itself.

It started in the mid-'60s,

mainly as random,
individual acts.

But after the tet offensive
in 1968,

things began to change.

Gls started to organize.

They put out
underground newspapers

and spread them secretly
on bases.

They joined
anti-war demonstrations

and formed
their own organizations.

And it wasn't easy.

The uniform code
of military justice

gave commanding officers
absolute power

over their troops,

and they came down hard
on dissent in its ranks.

Gls faced threats, harassment,

even prison for their defiance.

There was rampant racism
in the military.

Black soldiers, inspired
by the civil rights

and black liberation movements,

engaged in many acts
of resistance

all through the war years.

One example was the 43
black gls from fort hood

who were imprisoned for refusing

to be deployed for riot duty

at the national Democratic
convention in Chicago.

It was anti-war gls
who first challenged me

to oppose the war.

And as I became involved
in the gi movement,

I started to understand
its class significance.

You see, while the civilian
anti-war movement at that time

was primarily white
and middle class,

the gi movement was made up
of working-class kids,

sons and daughters
of farmers and hard hats.

There were about 10,000 women
in the service at that time.

These were kids who couldn't
afford college deferments,

and they were largely rural
and urban poor,

especially blacks and latinos.

Their opposition to the war

struck at the heart of America.

Anti-war gls
weren't the majority,

but their influence was huge.

By 1971,

there were over 300
underground gl newspapers,

were participating
in demonstrations

against the war.

1,500 marched outside
the gates of fort hood

on armed forces day,

which the gls had renamed
armed farces day.

In Vietnam, soldiers
were refusing orders to fight,

and the army reported
an almost 400% increase

in awols in five years.

"Awol" stands for
"absent without leave."

That year, retired marine corps
colonel Robert heinl, Jr.

Wrote in
the armed forces journal,

"by every conceivable indicator,

our army that now remains
in vietham

is in a state
approaching collapse,

with individual units avoiding
or having refused combat,

murdering their officers
and non-commissioned officers,

drug-ridden, and dispirited

where not near mutinous."

Starting in 1968, a network
of gl coffeehouses sprang up

just outside military bases
all around the country

to support the gl movement.

They were decorated
with rock-and-roll posters,

run by civilian
anti-war activists,

and were places where
servicemen and women could meet

to plan demonstrations,

publish underground
gl newspapers,

learn about Vietnam.

I had spent a lot of 1970
touring these coffeehouses

and military bases
and meeting with soldiers,

so I had a sense
of what was happening.

And then,
army doctor Howard Levy

came to meet with me.

Howard was a hero
in the anti-war movement

for having refused orders

to train green beret medics
en route to Vietnam

for which he was
court-martialed.

Howard suggested that I create

an anti-war tour of entertainers

to travel to military bases
in this country

and the pacific,
a sort of countershow

to the very pro-war,
sexist shows

that Bob hope toured
every year in Vietnam.

I had just finished filming
klute with Donald sutherland,

and Donald and I decided
that Howard's idea

was a good one.

Using material we found
in gl newspapers,

and with sketches written
by the likes of Jules feiffer

and herb gardner and others,

we performed at gl coffeehouses
stateside,

and in the winter of 1971,

we went overseas.

We performed the show

for an estimated 64,000
active-duty soldiers, sailors,

marines, men and women
of the air force.

They risked a lot
coming to the show

knowing that everyone
was photographed,

and the military brass
did all they could

to make them stay away.

The film of that tour,
the one you're going to see,

opened July 14th, 1972,

was in theaters barely a week

when it was pulled
from circulation

by the distributor

and most copies were destroyed.

I hope you enjoy this film

restored by indiecollect,
with the support

of the Hollywood foreign press
association.

your mother and tell her,

you know, that her... her

handsome, young, darling marine,

you know, her hero
is anti-military, you know?

But I sat down
and wrote her a letter

and told her exactly how I felt.

And my mother wrote back,
and she said

that she fully understood
and she was happy

that I felt that way,

that I was anti-military
and everything.

The way this war is,
we are really in a pinch,

you know, so why should
we go out there

and put our lives down?

That was the alternative
of either going to jail

or coming into service,

and so I was left
with no alternative

but to be inducted.

I had just gotten
out of high school.

I didn't have a job,
no prospects for any.

No money.

The air force came along
and there I was.

Dreaming of going places,

meeting new people,

doing exciting things?

Ever thought
about the air force?

- May I call you, airman?
- Oh, yes, captain.

When I first saw you
silhouetted in the tower,

silhouetted by the light
from the radar screen,

bringing in that crippled plane,

a wave of confidence
welled through me,

and I knew that with you there

my f-111 would be
a safer place to be.

Oh, captain.

Captain, I have a dream.

I have a dream, a big dream.

A dream of democracy.

That's my dream!

Then, together,

together, we can help
protect the free world

from unfair competition

and ensure
that future generations

will have a free world
to protect.

Yes, sir.

They sent me to code school
in old monterey.

I worked very hard
and got my mos.

The code of those words say fta,

but what they mean,
hey, no one could guess.

Free the Albanians? =no!

Future teachers of America?

Who would write that
on latrines?

Foxtrot, tango, Alpha, help me.

Tell me, what does it mean?

Just a minute, operator.

Oh, damn, I don't have
any change.

Excuse me, private.

Do you have change
for a quarter?

Oh, yeah. Yeah?

You do not say "yeah"
to an officer!

An officer is always addressed
as sir.

Now I learned that
in basic training, private,

and so did you!

You always address an officer
as sir!

Now I'm gonna give you
one more chance

and I want to hear
that sir loud and clear.

Private, do you have change
for a quarter?

No, sir!

I went down to that base,
they took one look at my face

and ran out
and ordered to bar me.

I said, "foxtrot, tango, Alpha.

Free the army."

I think I'm gonna get me
a watchdog.

What you need a watchdog for,
sarge?

You're surrounded
by 250 armed men.

That's why I'm gonna get me
a watchdog.

No vietnamese
ever ordered me to fight.

They never flew over
my hometown to bomb me.

So I have to say,
"foxtrot, tango, Alpha.

Free the army."

Mr. president, there's
a terrible demonstration

going on outside.

Oh, there's always
a demonstration

- going on outside, pat.
- Yeah, but, Richard,

this one is completely
out of control.

What are they asking for
this time?

Free Angela Davis
and all political prisoners,

out of Vietnam now,

and draft
all government officials.

Well, we have people
to take care of that.

They'll do their job,
you do your job,

- and I'll do my job.
- Richard, you don't understand.

They're storming
the white house.

Oh, in that case, I better
call out the 3rd marines.

- You can't, Richard.
- Why not?

It is the 3rd marines! Oh!

I went down to the base,
they can look at my face

and read out an order to bar me.

So we said, "foxtrot,
tango, Alpha...”

Say it.

"Fuck the army and the Navy
and the marines!”

I went into the army,
I thought it was...

Well, since I had
the opportunity

to grow up in a free society
as in America,

I owed my country
at least two or three years

for my life.

So I enlisted
and was sent over to Vietnam.

Spent four months there in 1970

before I was hit three times,

was medevacked out to Japan.

At the time of recuperating
in Japan, I started wondering

just what the hell
we're in Vietnam for.

Cause when you're taught
about the communist monster

that you're over there
to, uh, defeat,

when you get over there
and you, like, see

when you're going through
a villa or something

to liberate a village,
the people hide from ya

and throw rocks
and everything else,

bottles and all at ya.

But when the viet cong
come to liberate a village,

people go out there
yelling... celebrating,

holding pictures of ho chi minh.

And, you know,
seeing things like that

makes you wonder just who
this monster really is.

Come on now.

First, they draft your ass,

then uniform your ass,

and then they train your ass.

I mean, they drill your ass.

They drill your ass.

And then they bust your ass.

They bust your ass.

And then they break your ass.

They break your ass.

And then they ship your ass.

They ship your ass.

And then they shoot your ass.

And then they shoot your ass.

Well, they can kiss my ass.

They can kiss my ass.

Then they can kiss my ass.

She had a job, she had a boss.

He had a desk to run her 'round.

She thought that she could
escape that job

by escaping her child hometown.

She sailed clear across
the ocean,

but, baby,
now she's really in a mess.

You see, she gave
her commanding officer

a karate chop in the chest.

And now she's telling
the whole world.

She's her own woman,
not your girl.

And since the very first time
she felt free, she said,

"I know they know
my ass belongs to me.”

You know, some say
the masses are asses,

but I've just come here
to tell you

they're all wrong.

You see, the masses have
just been letting the asses

lead 'em by the nose too long.

We've been busting our ass
all evening,

and now I'm saying just for me

that my ass belongs to everyone

who's fighting to be free.

Yeah.

Attack aircraft carrier
USS coral sea, with 85 planes,

six million pounds
of munitions, 4,500 men.

It has dropped more than
850,000 tons of bombs

on the people of indochina.

In November, 1971,
1,300 of its crew

signed a petition
to stop their ship

from going to Vietnam.

You all are not actually on
vietnamese soil.

It must be very abstract
for you,

I mean, what the effects

of an attack carrier have
on the war.

Um, what is it that... that
started you all thinking,

and how did you come
to understand the role

that an attack carrier plays?

I suppose everybody
always knows,

but they can rationalize
anything away.

That's man's, you know,
that's the way his mind works.

Like, you read the polls

and people want us
to get out of Vietnam,

and you see the polls getting
higher and higher every week,

but, yet, we aren't out,
you know,

and how can you
rationalize this?

Yeah, we'll be
off the coast of Vietnam

during Christmas, you know.

We'll probably send a strike off

during Christmas day.

There are so many sick lifers.

They'll go down
and write "merry Christmas”

on a bomb, you know.

And the chaplain will make...
Will try and rationalize it,

you know, and it's a big joke.

But it scares you.

You have to question,

and I was always taught
to question.

The service won't
let you question

because they don't have
an answer.

They only have a rulebook.

And I feel that
by my speaking out, you know,

if 1 can turn
just a couple people

to start thinking about it

or even think about it
for a couple of seconds,

I've done what
I'm supposed to do.

- All right.

Good afternoon, sports fans.

A beautiful sunshiny afternoon

here on the mekong river delta

where elements
of the 101st airborne

tango with the crack
north vietnamese 7th regiment.

Both teams undefeated
and untied so far this season.

Looking directly down
on the playing area,

marshy rice paddies
surrounded by trees

with hills in the background.

Looking up over those hills,

here come the cobra
helicopters of the 101st.

They're strafing landings now,
50-caliber machine gunfire,

there go the miniguns,

and here come
the crypt-carrying hueys

windmilling down into the zone.

It'll be the 3rd brigade
of the 101st.

The boys come busting
out of the helicopters,

firing m16s from the hip
as they go driving on

to set up a line of scrimmage.

There's no sign
of the viet cong,

yet no sign of Charlie.

Wait a minute,
yeah, there he is.

There's Charlie.

Charlie's here
and he's got mortars.

I count mortars, one, two,
three, four, five rounds

of mortar fire,
and two make it four

huey helicopters
down and burning.

The rest are up
and heading for home.

Wow.

The boys in 101st
are dug in there now.

Charlie coming out from behind
the mortars with ak-47s.

He's heading for the outside
of the line,

but the boys in 101st have
laid up a wall of grenades,

small weapons,
and machine gunfire,

but Charlie driving on hard.

And look at those fireworks,
the best

that American technological
know-how can provide.

Flechettes, claymores, beehives.

There's puff the magic dragon,
36,000 rounds a minute.

The boys have got
four-barrel shotguns.

And Charlie is slowing down,
he's bogged down.

He stopped, he stopped,
he stopped.

That's the line of scrimmage.

What do you think of the action
so far, red?

Well, red,
it looks like we're in

for a beautiful game here today.

Both these teams
are in tip-top condition.

Boys from 101st
looking really good out there.

Not that I'm trying to detract
from the viet cong.

They've had a beautiful season.

I guess you know this, red,
they are the home team here,

and they seem to have
a lot of support here

among the local fans.

Meanwhile,
back on the playing field

there's a temporary halt
in the action, a time-out

while the dead and wounded
are being dragged

red, I see lieutenant colonel
Billy slocum

on the radio down there,
and I think he's gonna go

to the air for the next play.

I think he'll look for the bomb.

There they are,
from the carrier USS enterprise,

four f phantom jets
in formation.

Silver glinting in the sunlight

they're up and over,
down they come.

There go
the 20-millimeter cannons,

there go the rocket pods,

there go the anti-personnel
fragmentation bombs.

And I count 12 water buffalo
down and kicking.

There they go, around again.

They're coming in again
for a second pass.

We'll watch for it,
here they come.

Low coming in, here it is,
it's napa.

Wow! Right on top of the 101st.

There are penalty flags
all over the playing area.

They're moving out now
into orderly withdrawal,

and lying motionless
on the ground

is lieutenant colonel
Billy slocum.

That'll be a fragging penalty
for the boys in the 101st.

And here's the hotline
battlefield tally:

For the viet cong,
117 dead, 212 wounded.

For the 101st, casualties were

light to moderate as usual. Red?

the current temperature

on okinawa, 66 degrees.

The news is next inside
on American forces radio.

The time at the tone, 8:00 A.M.

Picketing continues fo increase

as more than 750
zengunro personnel

are in 32 gates
to military installations

as the first day of
the planned two-day workshop

each got underway.

However, no incidents
have been reported,

and traffic continues
to move slowly

through those gates
with heavy picket activity.

We're, of course,
particularly happy

to be in okinawa.

We all hope
that by our presence here,

the okinawan people
and the U.S. military people

can come together
to see our show

with the understanding
that the American gli

is not the same
as the American government.

The American gls don't know
why they're here,

don't want to be here,
don't want to be in Vietnam

or Japan or the Philippines
or Hawaii,

uh, anywhere in the pacific rim

or anywhere in the world
where they don't belong,

and that they,
like us and like you,

believe that okinawan land

should belong
to the okinawan people.

Probably they resent Americans
being here mainly, I'd say.

I can't blame 'em in a way,

when you see a base like this
with all this land

that they could be using
for something else.

I think they ought to send us
all back to the states.

That's where... we're part
of the United States.

We're supposed to be
standing up for that flag,

not some other country,
I don't think.

Why, here, the okinawan people,

they're fighting
in the streets, saying,

"let us have our own Republic.”

And we've had em for 25 years,

and before that, Japan had em.

Let 'em have their own Republic.

Oh, I didn't know that,

We've just been figuring out
what to do

about the fact
that there are apparently

several thousand more gls
outside that can't come in.

And so, we're going to do
a second show.

because, apparently,

I'd like to sing a song

that I wrote
about a young black soldier

who refused his orders
to kill in Vietnam.

He was placed in a stockade,

and he gave an interview
to the press,

and among his reasons
for doing this,

he said that, um,

he thought the war in Vietnam

was an American war
of aggression.

He thought it was a racist
and genocidal war.

He said he doubted very much
if America could bring

equality and democracy
to the yellow people of Vietnam

when they'd never brought
equality and democracy

to the black, brown, red,
and yellow people of America.

And he thought that, um,
before we begin to preach

and leave our country
to spread the word,

that we better clean up
our own mess at home.

And this song is called
"soldier, we love you."

I read that you took a stand

and refused to kill in Vietnam.

You said no man was your enemy

if what he's fighting for
is to be free.

Ghetto streets lead nowhere,

and ghetto cries fill the air.

Uncle Sam's in nam
to loot and Rob,

and people starve at home
'cause there's no jobs.

I know it's hard

It's when you... it's when
you refuse to put your manhood

in your back pocket, you dig?

When you got certain principles
and beliefs

that you refuse to go back home
for anybody

is when you start catching hell.

If you're a certain type
of person

considered by the military
as being subversive

or radical or so,

if you're that certain type
of person,

you commit the same crime

that somebody else
has committed,

you're likely to burn
more than he would

because they're trying
to make an example out of you.

Myself, I went for
e-4 last month.

They asked me a question
about the black convention

they're supposed to be holding...

Supposed to be holding.

Okay, I told my opinion
and how I felt

towards the black convention

and what the black man
is trying to do.

This, they put me out for
do not recommend for promotion.

They just want you
to be a little robot.

They wind you up
and they want you

to do the job
that you're supposed to do.

They don't consider you
as a human being.

They don't want you
to be an individual.

Anytime you are an individual,
they slap you around

until you get back
in line again.

More brothers are coming
into the service every day,

and more brothers are leaving.

The brothers are leaving
more in the military

than they were
before they come here.

There's got to be a reason why.

Why don't they join
this green motherfucker,

and they'll find out
just where it's at.

This is no war for a black man.

This is a white man's war.

We didn't start it,
we had nothing to do with it.

The people over there
are our brothers,

and we believe
in the third world.

We went down there
for democracy, right,

and what'd we get?

It's a farce,
a one-man election.

Look at the 50,000 people died
for a one-man election.

Just like it says
on the back of my jacket,

"we shall be free

as a new kind of Christ,

American servicemen and women

We demand an end to all
of the discriminating policies

against persons
because of their race.

to search ilwakuni base

about nuclear weapons

be allowed to fly
to southeast Asia

be given back
to the Japanese people

and stop being run
by the imperialistic

American government.

We demand an immediate
and total withdrawal

of all air and ground troops
and CIA from Vietnam

as well as from Korea,
Guam, okinawa, Japan,

the Philippines, Israel,
Cambodia, Thailand,

Germany, england, Panama,
Guantanamo bay...
