It was just me
and Jill in the car

and we were basically
gossiping.

When I heard the growl

I knew we were in trouble.

It started pulling
at the door,

trying to get it open.

We were in a car.

We were trapped.
We weren't going anywhere.

I saw what was
on the other side.

It was like every story
that my dad had ever told me,

that monsters weren't real
was a lie,

because I didn't know
what this was.

This shape all of a sudden
begins to move.

I realized
that I was hyperventilating.

I've got pictures of it.

It was actually bigfoot.

The thing to do
is not lose your head,

so I had another clip,
just in case.

So, I was going to give him
everything I had.

I couldn't breathe.

This is how I'm going to die.

My name is Danielle Steadman

and I grew up in Huntersville,
North Carolina.

I grew up on a farm
that was over 200 acres.

We had lots of animals,
horses, cows, chickens,

pigs.

You name it, we had it.

I used to go out riding
every single day, I loved it.

But, after this,
I wouldn't like that no more.

Are you ready?

Yeah. Let's go.

My dad taught me to hunt

as soon as I could pull
the trigger,

and I mean young.

It's going to be a great day.
Are you excited?

Yeah.

I had my first .22
when I was five.

Do you think we'll see one?

He taught me everything
about hunting, animals, guns.

So, I knew a lot of animals.

Oh, my gosh!

Augh!

What could have done this?

We had a cow killed,

and I mean slaughtered.

Not a normal kill.

This thing had been gutted,
the throat was ripped.

To me, it looked like
it was one giant bite,

that had just taken
everything.

It was awful.

My dad said
that it had to be wild dogs.

But I wasn't sure.

Come on. Let's go.

Back when this happened,

I'm pretty sure it was '87,
because I know I was 14.

My mom had cancer,
she was dying.

We had just been told
she had a year to live.

It had pretty much
taken over.

It was my responsibility
to clean up the house.

I was a lot more mature
than most 14 year-olds.

And if I showed you
a picture of me at 14,

you would swear I was 18.

My mom was very religious,

but she started letting me
date a little bit, not a lot.

I could, as she called it,
car date.

Good night, mom.

Sleep well.

But I had to be home
by 9:30.

So, it wasn't really much
of a date.

I was a pretty good kid,

but I was
a little rebellious too.

That particular night
I snuck out about 12:30.

- Hey.
- Hey.

Hey, hey, don't do that.

You're going to smudge up
the window.

When I would sneak out,
I had to be really careful.

Because we know the car
could wake up my parents.

We were just going
to ride around,

listen to music
and just to park

and, you know,
do what teenagers do.

We went and we picked up
my other friend Jill.

Then we went to pick up
her boyfriend.

But the problem

with picking up
her boyfriend is...

we were going to have to park
at the end of his road,

and then,
run up and get him.

If it wasn't so noisy,
we could go right on up.

Well, it isn't.
So, we can't.

Jill's boyfriend,
he and Richard
had already talked

and he was going
to walk down there

and they would walk back
together.

Don't take too long.

And that's why
we just got left in the car.

It was just me and Jill
in the car,

and we were listening
to the radio,

and she was talking
about school

and, you know,
what was going on.

And we were basically
gossiping.

Did you hear what Kate said?

She said
she was interested in Zack.

- Really?
- Yeah.

My boyfriend,

he had been gone, maybe,
five, ten minutes.

We were just sitting there
talking

and the first thing
we noticed

was a smell.

An awful, awful smell.

Jill, she didn't smell it.

What's smell?

I was like,
"Don't you smell that?"

She took a real good whiff.

And then, she was like,
"Oh, my God", you know,

"What is that?
That's awful!"

It smelled like when something
has maggots in it.

Blood.

It's getting worse.

And then, the other smell,

it's a real musky
kind of smell.

All those smells combined
together was...

really, really overpowering.

We were like pulling
our shirts up like this,

and like, trying to smell
our own shirts
because we had perfume on.

I figured it was nothing.

So, we kind of just went back
to gossiping.

...true. It seems like
there's a new one everyday.

What was that?

It was probably
within a minute or two

of that smell,

that we felt
the first rock of the car.

We were both like,
"What is that?"

It's just the guys.

Enough time had now lapsed,

really if Josh had been
waiting on Richard,

they could have been back.

The first thought was,

"They're playing
a prank on us,
they're trying to scare us!"

It's definitely them.

We couldn't see anything
because it was steamed up.

And then...

the car rocked again.

And by,
I think the third time,

it's when we started saying,

"All right, that's enough,
we know it's you'all,

cut it out,
come on, let's go!"

That's enough.
You had your fun.

But, they didn't answer.

You could hear
the suspension doing that,

you know, that sound.

I knew it wasn't Richard.

He wouldn't do that
to his car.

When I heard the growl,
I knew we were in trouble.

Something just tells you,

"This is a life
or death situation."

You know you're in trouble.

We were in a car.
We were trapped.

We weren't going anywhere.

Then,
all of a sudden, it just...

it just stopped.

Everything was dead quiet.

I mean, you could have heard
a pin drop.

But I didn't hear

any of those
night time noises.

That scared me,
because if you're out
hunting,

and everything goes
dead quiet,

you're not
the only predator around.

There's something else.

Also, when I heard the growl,
it sounded canine.

But it didn't sound like

when my pitbull gets angry
and growls.

It sounded bigger,

deeper.

At first, I didn't
really know what it was,

because it was so loud.

But, I realized

that it's got to be something
scraping up against the car.

Almost like metals twisting.

And then it started
coming down,

like towards
the driver's door.

When it got to the door,

I was like .

I was thinking,

"What the hell

could lift a door handle

that would growl
like an animal,

because that don't
make sense."

To this day I don't know why
I was so stupid to do this,

but I...

I wiped the window
a little bit.

And when I did...

all I remember seeing
was something,

like, breathe out.

I didn't know what that was.

But I knew it was an animal.

Kind of did
an aggravated snore,

like it was mad that
there was glass between us.

At this point,
I was literally paralyzed.

What's that?

I remember slamming
myself back in my seat.

I was so afraid.

You instantly know
your life is in danger.

Jill, she lost it.

The more she screamed,

the louder it would growl,
the more it would shake.

I was trying to tell her
that she had to shut up,

to get down
as far as she could.

So this thing can't see us.

Or it's going
to break the window,
and instantly grab us.

And it's going to eat us.

Get down! Get down!

And the, all of a sudden...

...it wasn't shaking
the car anymore.

Would it stop shaking?

It was a little worse,
because,

well, I didn't know
where it was.

I got really scared.

It was really quiet,
and really still,
and I couldn't hear it.

And then...

it was now at the back
of the car.

We saw it standing there

and it, like, crouched down.

And you could just hear him
fiddling with something.

And then, it dawned on me,

it's trying to figure out
the trunk.

And I guess
that's when it dawned on me,

"Your car door is unlocked,
stupid."

I mean,
I locked my boyfriend's,

but I forgot to lock my own.

And that's
when I made the decision

I was going to have
to lock it.

I was scared.

Because I knew it's loud,

when it engages
in the locking system.

And I remember thinking,
"Please, don't hear it."

It was back there fiddling
and as soon
as I pushed it down,

it stopped.

And I knew it was listening.

And then, all of a sudden...

...it started pulling
at the door,
trying to get it open.

I was holding it
for dear life.

My hands were getting numb.

And all I could think was,

"Please, God, don't let it
be able to open this door."

I knew if it got it open,
that was the end of us.

Stop it! Stop it!

We were very scared.

I remember
looking at my knuckles,

and I was holding it so tight
and I just started screaming,

"Leave us alone!"

Leave us alone!

I did not want
to open that door.

And then, no rhyme,
no reason...

Leave us alone!

It just stopped.

Jill and I,
we slowly calmed down,

and she was like,
"Where is it?"

I was like, "I don't know."

Everything was dead quiet.

And I had to know
where it was,

so I took my hand

and just rubbed a little bit
that steam off the window.

And that was a big mistake.

I saw what was
on the other side.

And it was these two huge,

yellow, amber...

eyes.

Staring back at me.

And I, I froze.

It was like every story
that my dad had ever told me,

that monsters weren't real
was a lie,

because I didn't know
what this was.

I'll never forget those eyes.

There is almost
something human about it.

I've seen bears,
I've seen wolves.

This wasn't something
like that.

Even though I don't believe
in werewolves,

I don't believe
in those types of things.

I truly believe
that that was a werewolf.

All of a sudden,
it just kind of whipped
its head,

like, looking down the road.

And I was thinking,
"This is it,

it's going to tear
our boyfriends to pieces."

We at least have the car,
but if they come back,

they're out there with it.

They're going to die.

We're going to watch
our boyfriends
get slaughtered.

We were really in shock.

Open up!

It's freezing out here!

Our boyfriends got back.

They didn't know
what was out there.

Get in! Get in quick!

All I remember
is them getting in the car.

My boyfriend, he was like,
"What? What's going on?"

And I was like,
"We've got to go,
we've got to go now,

let's go,
we want to go home!"

We've got to go,
we've got to go now!

And the, all of a sudden,
we heard it.

Loud.

Close.

We've got to go,
we've got to go now!

Why? What do you mean?

Go! Go! Richard, go!

The next morning my boyfriend
wanted me to see something.

Hey! Take a look at this!

That front quarter panel,

it was pulled back.

It looked like claw marks
on the side.

That thing had tore
that whole quarter panel up.

And then, when we got
to looking
at the top of the car,

you could see
these huge prints,

where that thing had grabbed
that car and shook it.

I mean, I just told him,
I was like,

"It looked like a werewolf."

And I remember him saying,

"Whatever it was,
it was damn strong!"

This whole thing
scared me so bad,

there was nothing
I could find in the library

about anything
even remotely close to this,

except for fictional
werewolves.

Come on, boy!

I always had dogs,
because of this incident.

I want something around
that would alert me

if there's a smell
or a sound

or anything outside
that I can't hear.

I know they can hear it.

You don't know
what's lurking.

You don't know
what's watching.

Especially at night.
You have no idea.

And what I saw,

he was a top predator.

For me, monsters are real.

I mean, I don't want
anyone to think I'm nuts!

But I can't help what I saw.

And I did see it.

And I'll never forget
its eyes.

My name is Will Lansford.

My hometown
is Texarkana, Arkansas.

Texarkana is a very,
very good place to live

and a good place
to raise a family.

Good neighbors.

"Yes, Sir-No, Sir"
kind of people.

I was raised in the woods.

I used to hunt and fish
with my dad.

He passed away when I was 12.

That's one of the great
memories that I have of him,

spending that time
in the woods with him.

My first bigfoot encounter
was very much unexpected.

It was a very real experience
that changed me.

I was 17 years old.

I had a place to fish
that I had been to with my dad

ever since I was a little boy.

That day, there was nothing.
It was strange.

Everything was just the way
it'd been ever since
I was a little boy.

The place I fish
was a place of a series
of gravel pits or borrow pits

where they take
the gravel out of the earth.

I love to fish
and that was my place
to get away.

I had no recent foot prints,

but I attributed that
to be other animals

or beavers that had slid
and didn't really pay
a whole lot of attention.

As I was heading on down,

I kept noticing
that there was
a strange smell.

And as I was walking,

something began to pace me
from inside the woodline.

And that had never
happened before,

even with my dad being there
all them years.

So, I was listening,
and I heard a step beside me.

Hello?

Hello?

I just blew it off.

I continued walking
and when I did,

pretty soon the steps
continued beside me.

And I thought, "Man,
that's too coincidental."

So I stopped again.

Hello?

It kind of made me uneasy.

But then, you know,
when you're in the woods,

your imagination
can run wild with you.

I quickened my pace
a little bit.

Pretty soon, this,
whatever this animal is,

is walking beside me again.

I thought, "Well, this thing
is actually pacing me."

So, I started jogging.

When I started jogging,
this thing was...

And I realized,
whatever it was,
it was paying attention to me.

So, I took up running.

All of a sudden...

When I heard
this animal roar,

it made the first thing
that impressed me was volume.

Oh, my gosh!

Your clothes vibrate,
it's that loud!

We have cottonmouths,
we have copperheads,

we have rattlesnakes.

I ran into the woods,

with disregard
for those things.

I realized what I have
was going to be a lot worse

than a snake bite.

I crossed the road,
looked around,

nothing there, so, I'm like,

"Man, whatever that was,
you just consider yourself
lucky."

But I went that night
and I bought me a Bowie knife.

I thought, "I'll take care
of that sucker next time
I'm down here."

It's human nature,

after your breath
has gone away,

time kind
of heals everything.

Lightning is not going
to strike twice
in the same place.

But as I get
to where this crossroads is

I take a look down there,

I'll have
that uneasy feeling,

that sixth sense that you get,
that something's not right.

And the smell,
it's just even more...

I'm looking down there,
I noticed a shape.

This shape all of a sudden
begins to move.

And he looks at me,
he postures to me like,

"This is my area,
don't come down here,"

and it begins to teeter,
from one side
to the other side.

And his eyes were black
as pieces of charcoal.

And he never took
his gaze off of me.

I realized
I was hyperventilating.

I couldn't breathe.

This is how I'm going to die.

My feet said, "Go."

My body said, "You're not."

And I was just frozen
to the ground.

I'm weighing down my options.

Finally, it came to me,

as I started to get
my bearings back about me,

that I needed to go.

I'm looking over my shoulder
to make sure he's not coming.

It has no place so I can hide.

I'm running like crazy.

He's going to get you here.

He's already up here,
and he's going to step out

and he's going to get you.

What am I going to do
with my rod and reel,

that was given to me
by somebody that was special
to me at the time.

So, I got it.

And I took off
like there was no tomorrow.

I could not breathe.

I was shaking.

Crying.
Uncontrollably.

My whole face
was just soaking wet.

Did this really happen?
Was this really real?

And your answers
are always, "yes."

My world had been messed up,

because not only
was it to the point

that affected me
physically,

but psychologically.

It was actually a bigfoot.

So, it made me realize,
"These things are here."

I had to learn something.

I tried to find all I could
to read about it.

Seeing a bigfoot in 1977

was something I never thought
I would experience again.

I never forgot it.

But then,
I had another sighting,

years later.

Driving down the road I saw
this one tree structure.

I heard that bigfoots
manipulate these trees

into different shapes
and stuff.

And I knew
I had to go check on that.

All of a sudden,
I started having sticks

and pinecones thrown at me.

I knew it was one
of those aggressive bigfoots.

And so, I had my phone out.

I thought I'd go and get
a picture of this joker.

I just put my camera up
and took a picture.

Right here, is this bigfoot,
leaning out
from behind this tree.

I looked at him.

And then, he turned
and looked at me again.

I've got pictures of him.

I decided that I'm going
to put out game cameras.

I've got pictures
of several--

at seven and a half foot,

where you're right
in front of your camera lens.

There's no doubt about it.

When you take a picture
of bigfoot

and he's not expecting it,

and your camera
is not tied down,

it gets tossed
at you 40 feet.

When you come back
to find your camera,

your camera is nowhere
to be seen.

So, you have to go
looking for it.

They don't want to have
their picture took.

My son had always wanted
to see a bigfoot.

On Easter Sunday, 2014,

we loaded up
all our equipment.

I parked the vehicle, right?

I leave the keys
in the ignition,

just in case.

My son is armed like
a small third world country.

I generally have
two or three pistols.

We had a parabolic dish,
one of the dishes

that soaks up the noise
and things like that.

My son has got
some beef jersey sticks

and he's biting them.

The atmosphere
was different,

I kind of had a tingling
in my spine.

So, I thought,
"If there was a time

for something to happen,
this was it."

I do a few calls.

My call that I do, generally,
to bring in bigfoot,

would be like,
what's called a barred owl.

And a barred owl'd be...

And so, I started that
right there.

I didn't get any activity,
so I changed calls.

I also do a calls...

Real loud.
Woop like that.

I wait a while,
don't get anything.

So, I thought,
"Well, I've heard
they'll do rock clacking."

So, I reached down
and picked up a couple rocks.

I thought, "If anything's
going to happen,

this would be the time."

By then, I'm really tuned in.

Richard's got his spotlight,
I've got my spotlight.

I said, "We have something
over here."

He said, "Why aren't we
hearing anything?"

I said, "You've got
to keep it quiet."

Hear that?

- I don't hear anything.
- Shh! You've got to be quiet!

Well then, I picked up
a little bit of that stench.

Do you smell that?

You can fake everything.

You can't fake that smell.

We've got one coming in!

I said, "He's standing
right over there!"

I could tell
where he was standing at.

So, he starts coming
towards a little bit,

kind of tiptoeing
and stuff like that.

So, we wait for a minute.

And pretty soon he starts
coming in towards us again

a little bit more.

It's not any faster,
but it's a little bit harder,

like he's trying to stomp
to intimidate.

He starts coming in
a little bit quicker.

Whenever he does,

I did a couple
of "woop calls,"

which a bigfoot
will do "woop!"

Woop!

I don't know what I said,

but whatever I said
was the wrong thing.

Because here he comes
on a dead run.

His footsteps were actually
vibrating the ground...

I put my spotlight
on my left hand,

and my pistol
in my right hand.

I'm really more afraid
for my son, than I am myself.

He's coming right for us.

I thought to myself, "You need
to have your wits about you."

I put the spotlight up.

But when I did,
he goes down on all fours.

He starts running away.

And then, he squares up

and starts going back
into the woods.

And he gets in a tree.

I'm sitting there
squaring up on him,

waiting for him to come.

The thing to do
is not lose your head.

So, I had another clip,
just in case.

And Richard's got his gun.

I was going to give him
everything I had.

We could hear him
in that tree,
kind of breathing real hard.

Everything is just
deathly quiet.

There is not a cricket,
there is not a bug,

there is not a frog,
there is not a hoot out.

I mean, it's just quiet.

He takes off.

And the woods
just absorb him.

And he's gone.

It was very, very real
and very, very scary.

It puts you on a whole
different relationship

with the universe,
right there, to realize

these things are real
and they're out there.

I've had to open my mind to,

"Okay, there's
these things out here,

maybe these things
are possible."

I'm seeing things

that aren't supposed
to exist,

that you cannot explain.

I've got pictures of it.

Pictures with faces.

I've got pictures
you can zoom in

and you can see eyeballs.

When you see a bigfoot,

it's one of those things
that you don't forget.

It's really, really a thing

that deepens
your relationship

with the world.

I love the woods.
I get there as often as I can.

The sad part is right now,
every time I go I'm armed.

And that's the difference.

Not to kill,
but just to protect myself.

And so, that part
has definitely changed.

The fact that the innocence
the woods had,

there's no more innocence
to them woods.

I never thought
I would be forced

to acknowledge there was
such a creature

as bigfoot,
until I saw it.
