Juventus is loved,
but also hated,

like I was saying
the Yankees are,

like the Lakers are.

So, there is unique situations
for some things,

Juventus is a unique situation.

The Lakers
are a unique situation.

The Yankees,
you like them or don't,

they are a unique situation.

You can approve,
disapprove, like, not like,

but you cannot
take away what they've done.

First time ever to win

all three European competitions.

Juventus had a love
affair not with one city,

but with the country.

Other teams are a city
team only, we're not.

We were born with Juventus.

It comes into
the family in 1923.

Gianni was born
in 1921, Umberto 1934.

No other family in the world

has owned a professional team
as long as the Agnellis,

known as the Kennedys of Italy.

It was an element
of pleasure, of passion,

and also of being together.

Juventus has been for the most
part of my childhood

really a relationship
as a supporter.

The way we lived, Juve,

it was a passion,

if you cut my veins,
the blood is black and white.

When you know someone
and they're always very calm

or pretty steady,

not like a big
demonstrator of affection

and then when
they get to the stadium,

it's just like.

Villar Perosa,
a little alpine town

in northern Italy
just west of Turin

is where the Agnelli
family calls home.

Enter the family
leaders of the day.

This is Gianni or "the
lawyer" as he's also known

and this is his brother Umberto.

There's a lot to say
about a family

that has touched so many lives

as it has since the late 1800s,

but the story I'm about to tell

is of their great love
affair with Juventus,

the famed football club they've
been looking after since 1923.

As a way of kicking
off the new season,

the team visits the family
up at the house

and then heads back
down to play a little game

against the Juventus youth team.

It's a beautiful little
place at the feet of the Alps

which has this very
strong meaning to the family.

This is practically
where the dynasty,

if you so want
to call it, begins,

and it's the moment
when we come back home,

and so this game has
become a beautiful tradition

which carries
tremendous memories

and what's brilliant about it
is the warmth that you have

which is always the same.

Before the partita, the team
would come to Villar Perosa

and they'd go around
the garden with my grandpa

and sort of walk around and talk

and you know,
for us it was very exciting.

It's the day where
Juventus comes together

and gets ready to celebrate
what has happened,

but mostly to really think
about the next season.

It had taken 61 years

to win the first
10 championships.

From 1897, when
the team was founded,

to 1958, the year
when Umberto Agnelli

came up with the idea of stitching
on a permanent gold star

to commemorate the achievement.

Today, they celebrate their
recent 19th championship win

or scudetto as it's known.

This means Juventus
will have the honor

of wearing the Tricolore
in the following season,

the little Italian shield

that lets everyone
know who the champs are.

At this time, there were only
three teams with gold stars,

A.C. Milan,
Inter Milan, and Juventus.

The goal for the new
season was simple,

win the 20th title
and become the first team

to stitch a second
gold star onto their jerseys.

You see, the little
Italian shields come and go.

Gold stars are forever.

But if Villar Perosa is home,

then Torino
is definitely the frontline.

If there's one thing that stands

between them and
their black and white lady,

it's running
an automobile empire

that is the single biggest
employer in the country.

Juventus is a matter
of the heart,

but making cars
is a raging business

with billions on the line.

There's having to adapt to
the volatile political forces,

tending to the delicate
dance of pleasing both sides,

from capitalists to communists,

Kennedy to Castro, Reagan
Khrushchev, the royal family,

the pope, and the endless
others in between.

To sum it all up,
it's exhausting,

but through it all,
they stood their ground

and always
found their way to the stadium.

On the 25th of April 1982,

like most
Juventus fans in Turin,

the Agnelli family
and Juventus president Boniperti

were at the Stadio Comunale.

And with just four games
from the end of the season,

Juventus is tied in first place

and needs every available point

if they're to have a chance

at grasping
that second gold star.

Brady sealed it clean

and millions of fans
began to breathe again.

Nothing was in the bag just yet,

but Juventus had just
beaten their arch rival

and secured the precious
points to keep pace

and after months of fighting
their way to the top,

the 20th championship
was within reach.

But while Boniperti was dreaming
of that second gold star,

Gianni was already laying
in the foundations for the third

with the secret signing of
French sensation Michel Platini.

After a long day
of tough negotiations,

Michel Platini was
officially a Juventus player.

He would be
Juve's new number 10.

Boniperti hands
Platini the phone and says,

"Gianni Agnelli
wants a few words."

Oui.

Michel, welcome to Torino.

So you understand,
we have to win everything?

Yeah, sure, we'll try.

Remember, loose lips sink ships.

Platini just shrugged

and handed the phone
back to Boniperti.

Thanks to some very
sneaky phone calls

by French journalist
Eugene Saccomano,

not 15 minutes after
Platini's agreement was inked,

the news hit the airwaves.

Soon after, the Italian
papers ran the headlines.

Knowing he'd just been cut
from next year's team,

Liam Brady would still
have to play his heart out

for the last few games
of the season.

Brady wasn't disappointed,
he was devastated.

It all came down
to the very last game.

It seemed very likely
that Juventus

was headed for a scoreless tie.

In the game's dying minutes,

the black and
whites fire one off

when a defender handballs it

and the official
calls a penalty shot.

There were more than a
few capable players that day,

but the one stepping forward
is Liam Brady.

This penalty
could seal the championship.

No question,
Brady was the man for the job,

but as the entire nation
held its breath,

many agreed that he had every
right to kick the ball wide.

Everyone knew it was Gianni

who had insisted
on signing Platini.

The weight of the decision

rested squarely
on his shoulders.

With the 20th championship
title teetering in the balance,

the referee blows the whistle.

Juve had won her 20th title

and Italy had just
won the World Cup.

During that summer of 82,
more than ever,

love was in the air.

As they did every year
on the little match day,

the family hosted the team
up at the house.

Here is Gianni's son, Edoardo,

getting an eyeful
of Gentile and Platini

as they modeled
the new team jerseys

and here is Umberto
with his eldest son Giovanni.

The second gold star
put Juventus back on top

as the undeniable
team of the nation

and it was the apple
of every fan's eye

except for Gianni's.

For him, the stars were precious
symbols of the past,

they marked the end of eras.

Looking back wasn't something
Gianni was particularly fond of.

The family and the team
looked to the future

as they put the big win behind
them and got back to work.

Their objective
for the following season,

just like Gianni said to Platini
on the phone when he signed him,

to win everything.

"Did Platini get the message?"

Do you know
who the 'Maschio Angioino' is?

Once again, together,
they returned to victory,

tasted triumph.

And together, they also faced
incomprehensible violence,

tragedy,

and heartache.

The European win
at Heysel cast a long shadow,

but the sun would rise again

as the black and whites
marched on Tokyo

and challenged
for the world title.

After all was said and done,

this was now the most
successful Juventus to date.

Within a brief spell,
Platini became the first player

to win three
Golden Balls consecutively.

The prince had become king

and incidentally, had fully
delivered on his promise,

Juventus had literally
won everything.

Gianni and Umberto
were very pleased

with the current
evolution of the team

they inherited from their dad.

What made them even happier
was how the next generation

was also following in love
with Italy's leading lady.

And what did Berlusconi do?

The young businessman
Silvio Berlusconi

had just bought
the bankrupt A.C. Milan.

As he presented the new team,

Berlusconi had them blast
Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries"

on the loudspeakers.

It was an unprecedented
display of financial strength

and nothing less
than an act of war.

His first move was to snap up
the best players in the world

by severely
outbidding any challengers.

In doing so, he broke
every spending record

in football history.

His second move
was the real coup de grace .

The rest of Italy,
Juventus included,

was still buying
one or two top players

and building the team
around them.

Berlusconi did something

nobody had ever
had the audacity to do:

he hired an army of top players.

A.C. Milan now had the equivalent
firepower of two teams

and they were about
to let the world know it.

The impact on Juventus,
you ask? Let's just say,

from high up on their perch,

Juventus was in a free fall
to the bottom of the pile.

They say money
can't buy you love.

It certainly seemed to have
a positive effect on A.C. Milan.

The black and whites
were still licking their wounds

when Berlusconi
wins his first scudetto

with the red and blacks.

And the Agnellis knew that
this was only the beginning.

It didn't matter
how hard they tried,

the black and whites
just couldn't get it together.

The fans demanded answers,
but there weren't any to offer.

Finally, the Agnelli brothers
found their next Platini

that they could
build a team around:

the incredibly gifted
Roberto Baggio.

The Agnellis then
coupled Roberto Baggio

with a new wave tactician:
Luigi Maifredi.

With the promise
of entertaining football

known as champagne
football, success is guaranteed.

And then in October
of that same year,

Edoardo's arrest in Kenya
on drug possession charges

was all over the news.

Although Edoardo
maintained his innocence

and was cleared of all charges,
he was never the same.

This was not only
a source of concern

and primetime embarrassment
on an international scale,

but also a huge blow in the
changing of the family's guards

as it took Edoardo
officially out of the running

for any leadership roles,
including Juventus.

For the black and whites,

the war against the Milanese
would certainly take years

and require succession.

The entire family's
future now rested

solely on the shoulders
of Umberto's son Giovanni.

To make things even bleaker,

Maifredi's Champagne
Football, as they called it

had no pop, just fizzle.

Juventus hit a losing streak

that would turn the whole
project into a complete failure.

The Agnellis were
at a complete loss for words.

The lights were really dimming.

Five years of nothing,
and no hope in sight.

It's true that
in the grand scheme,

they'd already won
everything there was to win

and really needed to concentrate
on their car business

that was in urgent need
of turnaround.

Who needed the headaches?

The constant and growing
financial needs,

relentless criticism
from the millions of fans

and journalists,
the 6 AM phone calls?

Maybe it was time to simply
let go of their beloved lady.

It's the 14th of July 1935.

For 14-year-old Gianni, things
couldn't have been better.

It was the happiest
time in his life.

Juventus was winning
back-to-back championships,

and who was the superhero
behind it all?

His dad, Edoardo.

The Agnellis had just wrapped up

a family holiday
in Forte dei Marmi

and were about to head back
to their hometown Villar Perosa

where in a few days
the team would join them

to celebrate the big win.

Edoardo boarded a seaplane

while the rest of the family
traveled back by car and train.

As Gianni waits for his dad
at the Genoa train station,

all he could think of

was having the black
and whites all to himself.

He waits

and waits.

Edoardo doesn't show up.

The seaplane landed
safely in the Genovese port,

but as it taxied
toward the dock,

Edoardo stood up in the doorway

just as the plane
hit a floating log.

He was struck by the propeller.

Edoardo would never
make it home.

In that train station

Gianni's dream
turned into a nightmare

that would haunt him
for the rest of his life.

Instead of the celebration,

a funeral was held in Turin.

Haunted and heartbroken,
in that summer of 1935,

Gianni's insatiable obsession

with the black
and whites was born.

Every win,
every trophy, every gold star

diminished the nightmare
and revived the dream.

Once again,
it was revolution time.

The situation was critical.

Gianni maintained
his usual class,

but knew something
needed to be said.

Gianni declared
that the real contest

between Juventus
and the two teams from Milan

was about which of the three

would get to their
next gold star first.

The black and whites
with their third

or the Milanese
with their second.

Gianni had thrown
down the gauntlet.

The challenge
was ambitious but simple.

With Juve's tally being at 22,

it would take eight more
to get to their next gold star.

Inter Milan with its 13 titles
is just seven shy,

and A.C. Milan being 11
would need nine more.

Boniperti
doesn't waste a second.

He heads straight to the office,

kicks everyone out
and gets to work.

First thing he does,
he calls Coach Trappatoni back.

Together they initiated
a complete overhaul.

Boniperti
was struggling to hit his marks.

However, he still managed
some transfer market wizardry.

His finest example
being the signing

of the young Italian player

who had brilliance in every
stride, Alessandro Del Piero.

Gianni and Umberto
felt the potential,

but they knew the only thing

that would send a real
message to the Milanese

would be to win an Italian
championship title.

It was agonizing
as they watched A.C. Milan

win three years in a row.

Having to see
Berlusconi's plan pay off,

it was brutal.

It was a new world.

The fans' frustrations grew

and for the first time,
both Trappatoni and Boniperti

were harshly contested by fans.

It was almost
nine years of losing.

Their efforts were impressive,

but winning is
the only thing that counts.

Umberto's patience ran out

and with that,
Boniperti finally did bow out.

He was treated with respect

and made honorary Juventus
president for life.

If they were serious about
beating A.C. and Inter Milan

to the next gold star,

they desperately needed
to add some heavy hitters.

Juventus made
a deal to bring over

a knowledgeable
football man who knew

how to get the players
to put pen to paper.

Luciano Moggi.

With Moggi came a new coach

who was known for
an uncompromising work ethic

and who emphasized
the importance of team spirit:

Marcello Lippi.

Umberto also brought onboard

his confident business
manager Antonio Giraudo

and ex-star player
Roberto Bettega.

Together with Moggi,
they would complete the group

that became known as the Triad.

The 1994-1995 season
began well with a few good wins,

but wasn't without
its shaky moments

as Juventus went down
against Foggia.

Lippi's team-
building philosophy was unique.

His impact was evident.

Baggio even scored
a rare header,

was against the devil
from Milan no less.

Juventus
is the Italian champion!

May 1994.
Juventus finally wins another championship.

The family never held back

when it came
to showing their support.

A quality that was
successfully passed down

from generation to generation.

The family's next generation

was following in the
footsteps right on cue.

As if Berlusconi's A.C. Milan
wasn't enough of a challenge,

in 1995, the dragon
grew another head.

Inter Milan, also known
as "the Viper"

had just been snapped up by
a sharp young Italian oil baron

named Massimo Moratti.

Besides Moratti's budget
being virtually limitless,

he was also the son of Inter's
late and legendary president

Angelo Moratti
who had led La Grande Inter

through their most successful
era during the 1960s.

Massimo had watched his dad

not only win every
championship under the sun,

but also thrash their black
and white arch rivals from Turin

and he planned on following
in his dad's footsteps.

The Agnellis knew him well

and how his arrival
could complicate things,

but nobody could've
even remotely imagine

the wrath that was to come.

The following season
didn't add up to a title,

but Juventus once again
reached the top.

Amazingly,
as Berlusconi continued

to flex his financial muscle,

he was now being
outrageously outspent

by the very eager
Massimo Moratti.

But it was Juve's
balanced books initiative

that proved triumphant
as Lippi's men delivered

the black and whites'
24th scudetto .

Apparently,
Moratti didn't get the memo

as he broke the transfer
fee world record

paying 19 million pounds

for the new Brazilian
prodigy, Ronaldo.

And then, the roof caved in.

Giovanni complains of pain

and is diagnosed with a rare
form of intestinal cancer.

On December 10, 1997,

the family's future leader
went to Delle Alpi Stadium.

Only three days later,
Giovanni passed away.

The day after Giovanni's death

in the midst
of heart-wrenching sorrow,

Umberto turned to his only
remaining son, Andrea.

Gianni looked
to his grandson John

to assume the burden
of the family's future.

At the very young age of 21,

he was officially
named heir apparent

and catapulted
into advanced business training.

Gianni's son Edoardo
was less than impressed

with the way he wasn't
even informed

of his father's decision.

John's tender age also meant
that both Gianni and Umberto

would have to stay the course

in running the family businesses
longer than anticipated.

Juventus kept pace
and brought home

a second
consecutive championship.

Three scudetti within
the last four championships

attracted more
attention than ever.

Juventus owned the turf

and were nearly
impossible to beat,

and so the off pitch
attacks began.

The gold star he wanted
so badly was in his sights,

but the future was more
complicated than it appeared.

Juventus versus Parma.

But it was more
like the opposite.

It was just too much
for Lippi as he declared,

if he was the problem,

then Juventus
is better off without him.

And there it is.

Milan has won the scudetto!

Milan has won the scudetto!

Remarkable comeback
under Alberto Zaccheroni.

With Lippi gone,

Coach Ancelotti
pushed his men to their limits

in that following
season of 1999-2000.

The championship
classically came down

to the very last game.

The only thing Juventus
had to do to win the title

was defeat Perugia.

But Perugia scored a real beauty

and sunk Juve's
championship into the mud.

Sinking Juve's spirits further,

news broke that Coach Lippi
accepted a move to Inter Milan.

No big surprise
since he was offered

yet another one of Moratti's
record-breaking fees.

By the fall
of 2000, Gianni was 79

and succumbing
to prostate cancer.

If ever there was a time

he would've hoped
for a miraculous turnaround

from his son Edoardo,
this would've been it,

but on the morning
of November 15, 2000,

local police
arrived at the offices

and asked him to accompany them

to a site at the base
of a 200 foot bridge

to identify the body of a man
they believed to be his son.

Edoardo had committed suicide,

putting a dramatic end
to a difficult life.

He was very devoted to his son

and it was the great
sorrow of his life.

And I think Gianni,
it was heartbreaking for him

because he would've liked
his son to step in his shoes.

Gianni's sister
Susanna later revealed

that Gianni was inconsolable

and considered
his son's troubled life

a failure on his part
as a father.

Edoardo's suicide
cut Gianni deep inside

more than he would ever let on.

Edoardo
and Giovanni were both gone.

The gap in succession
had no grown considerably

as did Gianni and Umberto's
concern for Juve's future.

A few masterful transfer market
maneuvers were necessary,

putting their differences aside,

they brought Lippi back

from his disastrous
stint at Inter Milan.

They then replaced the goal
tender, Edwin van der Sar,

with the most sought after Italian
rising star: Gianluigi Buffon.

During the negotiation,
Umberto surprised everyone

when he addressed
Buffon directly.

In a surprising twist,

they offloaded
the legendary Zinedine Zidane

to Real Madrid
for a record breaking fee,

a move not many approved of

since he was
approaching his prime,

but anyway, addio to Zizou

and buongiorno to the Czech
sensation Pavel Nedved.

When it came to making
things look effortless,

Gianni was the master.

In truth, it took every ounce
of energy he could muster

just to get out of bed.

His chances of seeing that third
gold star were fading.

The black and whites'
next season could be his last.

There was much to do.

Umberto and Gianni
needed to act fast.

Massimo Moratti's
Inter Milan was tipped

to be this year's winner.

Inter must've begun
to get a little nervous

as Juventus clawed their way up,

effectively closing the gap
between the two teams.

May 5, 2002. The last day
of the season had arrived.

All Inter has to do is win
against a very uninspired Lazio

and the title is theirs.

As the first half
came to a close,

Juventus is pretty sure
to win against Udinese.

Inter are just 45 minutes away

from winning
that precious championship

that President Moratti
is so desperate for,

and then... Lazio keeps scoring.

Inter went down for the count,

losing 4-2 in what
will forever be known

as one of the most spectacular
chokes of all time.

Gianni and Umberto had broken
through another barrier

and celebrated the black
and whites' 26th title

knowing they were one
championship closer

to winning the real prize.

Snatching the title
away from Inter

at the very last minute,
breathtaking.

The time had come.

Gianni Agnelli had passed away.

He was given his last rites
by the cardinal of Turin.

He never made
any demands on others,

and he was always
giving to friends

and family.

So he was one of the most
remarkable men I've ever met.

He was one
of my very best friends.

When my grandfather passed away,

That was when
I realized for the first time,

was a huge, huge emotional link
between many people and him.

Most people who came,

a lot of them were also
supporters of Juventus

and I remember
they were giving things.

What came out to be
one of the biggest features

of these gifts
were scarfs of Juventus,

all kinds of different objects
linked to Juventus.

That moment for me
was an important moment

because I came to realize
how much all of this mattered.

Juventus was flying high

and edging closer
to their third gold star.

But only one year later,

Umberto Agnelli
suddenly passed away.

It was lung cancer

and it spread much quicker
than anyone had anticipated.

He was only 69.

When the team arrived,

Umberto's widow Donna Allegra,

who had maintained
her composure until then,

could no longer
hold back the tears.

They stood in silence
for 10 minutes.

Umberto's death
would now weigh down

on his only
remaining son Andrea,

but also on his brother's
grandson John

as it would now be up to him
to sit in the driver's seat.

There was no championship
title for Juve that year,

but Moggi was still confident

as he lined up more
top-shelf market transfers.

Along with his success, however,

his ego was also expanding.

With Capello at the helm,
Juve was proving unstoppable.

Two more and the Agnelli
dream would come true.

The battles that
were being fought on the field

were nothing
compared to the ones

that came to light
on May 2nd of 2006.

The sports papers
dropped a bomb.

They featured transcripts
of wire taps

between Moggi
and several officials

as they allegedly
committed sporting fraud.

Juventus had
been very successful,

so that had built
resentment everywhere

and then '06 came in the spring
with this big scandal

around match fixing.

And initially, when
everything was happening,

I was being reassured that

the allegations
that we were hearing

weren't going to be
so substantial.

After the last game
that we played in Bari

and lifted the cup,
the situation evolved,

and as it evolved, we understood
how serious it was.

That whole situation
very quickly turned sour

and it became
a huge war against Juventus

and then we had
to go through hell.

The reverberation
sent shock waves

throughout Italy

and the biggest scandal
in sports history was born.

It was a media frenzy
like no other.

Berlusconi immediately pounced

demanding the league hand over

the black and whites' two
most recent championship titles

to their rightful owners,
A.C. Milan.

The accusations began to fly.

Moggi didn't waste
any time saying

that referee designators
were called by everyone,

starting with A.C.
Milan and Inter.

For the family, the timing
couldn't have been worse.

Buried in work, they were just
starting to get things going

and now this.

It was a moment in time, 2006,

both John, Lapo, and myself,

we were all very young.

And so it caught me
very unprepared

and it was an extremely
difficult situation

because, on the one hand,
we wanted to make clear

that there was zero tolerance
for an improper behavior

and, on the other hand,
we wanted to make sure

that we protected
the team and Juventus.

A new management team
would replace the triad.

As for Luciano Moggi,

the scandal
literally brought him to tears

in front of the whole team.

Juventus, everyone,
and everything black and white

was in complete turmoil.

This kind of trial takes years,

especially one
of this magnitude.

However, this would be wrapped
up in just a matter of weeks.

And I had lawyers of other teams
whom I know very well

that told me that they were
really excited professionally

to the extent of work
they had to do,

to the extent of material
there was to study

and he told me, "We simply
did not have time to read it."

The head prosecutor representing
the Italian Football Federation

immediately called
for stiff sentences.

Article one is
unsporting behavior,

article six is sports fraud.

Fans were
expressing the distress

as to the unknown fate
of their beloved old lady.

They wanted answers,
and the first ones arrived.

Juventus was found guilty of
numerous article one violations

for having contact with members

of the Italian Football
Referee Association.

The likely punishment for this:

a fine and possibly
a point penalty.

For the violations
of article six, sporting fraud,

the future looks bright
as Juve is totally cleared

and found innocent,

but the good news
doesn't last very long.

We were then judged
on the hypothetical fraud

because a sum of various
unsporting behaviors

must or should
conclude to fraud,

but that was never proven.

Everyone was stunned

as the final sentencing
was read aloud.

Regardless of their
match fixing innocence,

Juventus relegation
to 2nd Division

with a 17-point deduction,

removed from the 2006-2007
champions league,

three home games to be played
behind closed doors,

and finally, stripped of their
two latest championship titles

from 2005 and 2006.

And so, Massimo
Moratti and his black and blues

were finally able to win their
first championship title together.

The grandeur of the sentence
left everyone speechless.

Some of the key players had
just flown back from Germany

where they represented Italy
and won the World Cup.

These guys now had to decide

whether to accept
ludicrous offers

from some of the most
prestigious teams in the world

or stay with Juventus
to spend one or two seasons

down in football hell.

For some,
it wasn't a choice at all.

Capello, who had told
the family he was staying,

packed his bags
first chance he got.

The truth is when
everything is going bad,

you end up having
very little soldiers with you

and most people
end up being very unreliable.

While the family could count
on Nedved and Del Piero,

the idea of the world's
numero uno

agreeing to play in 2nd
Division was inconceivable.

Buffon had to have been thinking

of the day he looked
Umberto Agnelli in the eye

and pledged himself to the team.

The day arrived
where that loyalty

was being put
to the ultimate test.

It was great to see
the strong show of support

from the millions
of fans and the family,

but the word on the street
was that Juventus

would never be
what it used to be.

There's many clubs,
but there's very few great clubs

and to create a legend,
to create a great club,

what you need to have
is a drive towards success

and a drive
towards success means

you fail, you're back
on the horse and you fight.

When things are hard
or, pardon my French,

the shit hits the fan,
I don't leave.

And there's a famous saying,

"what doesn't kill you
makes you stronger".

Serie B opening day.

The black and whites showed up
with their boots laced up tight.

Rimini came strong

and had no intention
of embarrassing themselves

on their home pitch
and the game ended in a draw.

Even
with a nine-point penalty,

they still finished

And it all came down

the fiery Derby d'Italia.

But it was a short satisfaction

and it was as if it
had been taking away

so much energy to get to that

and then with that done...

To me, one game is unimportant.

Juventus-Inter
is the Derby d'Italia,

it has been done for 60 years,

it will be that
for the rest of time.

All that matters is who's first
at the end of the year.

Every game is three points.

If you start thinking
that one game

is important to save the season,

that's the one moment you're
gonna fail the big target.

And Juventus
is about the big target.

Juve headed
in a promising direction

as they moved up in the
standings the following season,

but it was only a consolation
in the grand scheme of things.

The winds of
change began blowing again

as John and Andrea wished

as the big news was announced.

The natural evolution
of the leadership of Juventus

with someone in the family

if your team is winning,

people are super happy

and if you're not doing as well,

then people hate you
for disappointing them,

for not putting
enough money into it,

for not doing this, for not
doing that, it's very tasking.

Not that Andrea had planned

on winning the season
in his first year,

but he certainly didn't expect
his Juve to finish seventh

for the second year in a row.

At least this time,
Inter didn't win,

but you know who did?

Berlusconi had stood
the test of time

and had no plans
of putting on the breaks.

A.C. Milan
was making it clear:

they were back in the race.

Now at 18, like Inter,

they were only two away
from their second gold star.

His redeeming moment
had arrived.

Thanks to Moggi's tenacity,

Inter's mysterious phone calls
between the team's ownership,

management, and the head
of referee organization

that never turned up
in 2006 were now public.

The one and only
Italian Football League's

chief investigator
who had condemned Juventus

to 2nd Division
had now just announced

that Inter had committed
sporting fraud in 2006

violating article 6
of the sporting code.

This would mean
automatic relegation.

The law will now
finally be equal for all.

But with all the proof
in the world,

Inter wouldn't even
have to face the courts

as the five year statute
of limitations had run out.

Most people didn't even
understand what had happened

and many others just
didn't want to hear it,

but as always,
the clock was ticking

and there wasn't
any time to waste.

Andrea was about
to confirm Coach Del Neri

for another year at the helm

when a friend asked
if he would like to meet up

with a potential new coach.

After much deliberation
and closed room meetings,

Andrea introduced the coach

who would lead the black and
whites in the following season.

He needed no introduction really

as he was none other
than Antonio Conte.

By now, one thing was clear:

Beating Parma was
one thing, but A.C. Milan,

and a very well fortified
A.C. Milan at that

would be a whole other ballgame.

A.C. Milan had the
very recognizable top player

Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Ibrahimovic had won
every single title

for the last eight seasons
with every team he played for.

The tests, however, kept coming.

Juventus would go on to have

an unprecedented 35
match run without a single loss.

They were not only in position

to win the holy grail of titles,
the 30th championship,

but were on track to win it

three game days
before the end of the season.

What could stop them?

Well, for one, A.C. Milan
was still very close behind

and secondly,
they still had three games left.

The stage was set

and it was Marchisio
in the eighth minute.

That was it. The championship
was in the bag, it was done.

And, just as quickly, undone.

An unbelievable mistake
by Juve's number one.

It was like the whole
world had come to a full stop.

It was the needle
screeching off the record.

And how did
A.C. Milan do that day?

Two - nil win over Atalanta.

It was now Juventus at 78
points and A.C. Milan at 77.

Juventus would face Cagliari

and after what just
went down in Lecce,

there were no guarantees.

If Juve loses or even ties,

A.C. Milan could overtake
them in the standings

and snatch the championship.

The odds, let's just say,
it's happened before.

A.C. Milan, on the other hand,

had to play the derby
against Inter Milan.

It was no walk in the park.

Juventus scored first

with a goal by Mirko Vucinic
during the sixth minute.

In Milan, it would be Inter
to score the one nil

in the fourteenth minute.

A.C. Milan wasn't
going down without a fight

and of course, it would be
none other Ibrahimovic

to tie things up.

At the head of the second half,
A.C. Milan takes the lead.

Who scored it? Who else?

2-1 for A.C. Milan.

Suddenly, in the 52nd minute,

Inter ties the match at 2-2

as a penalty shot
goes their way.

In the 74th minute,
two-nil for Juventus

with an own goal
by Cagliarese Canini.

Another penalty
in Milan and it's 3-2

as Diego Milito
makes it a hat trick.

And with Inter's fourth goal.

No matter what the
league and federation says,

in every Juve's heart,

this was the 30th championship
and third gold star.

The legendary
Alessandro Del Piero

played his final match
in the Juventus stadium

with the black and whites
that evening.

Juventus
had finally won the real race

that began 30 years earlier.

There was one last
thing that needed to be done.

To bring it all home.

What is different from this year

is that we're celebrating
with our people

the fact of having gone to hell

and having
come back to Paradise.

No great story
is without a twist.

The rules forbid Juventus to
stitch on their third gold star.

For the first time since 1958,

there weren't
any gold stars at all,

just the words
'thirty on the pitch'.

A simple message
that spoke volumes.
