Two families living at opposite ends

both work low-wage jobs,

and there's
not enough to go around.

We have to juggle

They have a big ambition
to change their lives

by opening a mobile beauty salon.

multimillionaire Maxine

was an elite pro boxer
before turning to business.

People see the luxury,
they see the nice things.

Work doesn't stop.

Maxine wants to give back.
But few meet her exacting standards.

I do like to help people,
but over the years, in business,

it's taught me to be
a bit more cautious.

I'm very wary now who I help.

they're swapping homes...

I love it, it's very me.

The most favourite place for me
is the gym.

And I love the pool
for doing cold plunges.

just like Maxine.

My style is just way out there,

Maxine has come a long way
from humble beginnings.

So, I grew up in Salford.

Normal family, working class family,
so it's always been a struggle.

I've had to fight, literally,

from being a professional athlete,
to get where I am today.

I was one of the first non-medics
to train in aesthetics in the UK.

Since then,
Maxine has made a fortune

out of the UK's rapidly expanding
aesthetics industry.

So, aesthetic training, aesthetic
business is treating clients

who have cosmetic procedures.

Whether that be
anti-wrinkle, lips, you know,

there's so many
different treatments.

It's a multi-billion pound industry.

Joining Maxine for the week

is her good friend and housekeeper,
Chor, and her son Sean.

This swapping will help Maxine
to know the worth of the money.

It'll be like the old boxing days,

when I used to live on
noodles and... tuna.

For Maxine, the swap is also about
giving someone a break,

but she's a tough judge

I do like to help people,
but over the years, in business,

it's taught me to be
a bit more cautious.

I'm very wary now of who I help,

but I'm also good at judging
who is genuine and who's not.

50 miles from Maxine's
is Wythenshawe in South Manchester,

where a three-bedroom council house
is home to seven.

The struggles are massive. Like,
with there being so many of us.

The way the cost of living
is at the minute,

the prices of everything is rising.

They both do shifts washing pots
in a local cafe.

Anything what we need extra,
when we've done our weekly shop,

we're gonna have to spend it on it.

You just can't not go without
them things. So it is a struggle.

Despite the hardship,

Danny and Nicky squeeze in
college courses

working towards their salon dream.
Nicky is training in make-up.

I've passed nails,
and |'ve passed make-up artistry.

So, the time I get is
at the night-time, mainly,

or when the other kids
are in school.

While Danny trains to be a barber

to run his end
of their joint-venture.

Going anywhere nice this year?

Finding the time to earn a wage
is difficult around the family life

that we do have,
especially with college as well.

Like Maxine, who literally fought
to get where she is today,

Danny is also a boxer
but this time, for charity.

I wanted to challenge myself.

One was for Cancer Research,

another one
was for suicide awareness

because of things that happened
in my family and to friends

and things a long time ago.

So, what do Danny and Nicky
hope to gain from the week?

We wanted to do the swap
because we want to show the kids

the other side of life.

We want them see that as added
motivation for them and us, too.

It's day one of the swap.

Them two big bags are going,
any rucksacks are going,

and the pram is going.

but in reality,
they are worlds apart.

I'm very intrigued of the area -

the children are using everything

But for Nicky and Danny, last night

a lot more about who Maxine is

She's worked hard for it.

She's come from a council estate,

and she worked herself up
to the ladder

and achieved it.

So it makes you feel like
no matter where you are,

you can achieve it if you want it.

Back in Wythenshawe,
Danny's mum is visiting.

It's a chance
for Maxine to hear first-hand

of Danny and Nicky's challenges.

I see that
one of them's in education,

the other one, she doing make-up?

Yeah, she's doing make-up.
She did nails before that. Yeah.

They do it in the evening,
and they do it on opposite nights

so that
they can get everything done,

and then one can look after the
children while they go to college.

I'm starting to get
a bit of a picture now

about time and how they do it.

Cos obviously, five children,
it's gonna come to a point where

they'll have
a burn-out or a breakdown.

You know, like, when you...
It's like fight or flight,

where you're 100mph,
and you're doing what you're doing,

you'll come crashing down,
and it's... Yeah, it's sad.

It's just a constant battle
with time.

Did they have, like,
any, like aspirations or anything

to think, "well,
how am I gonna get out of this?"

That's why
they're doing the college. Yeah.

He wants to become a barber.

I'd describe them both
as triers, family-orientated,

good values because
they both look after their parents.

Erm, both the parents
have disabilities.

Running a business is, like...

For them to be able to get
their own business going and...

do what they need to do
for their family,

rather than coming and helping me.

but if I was on the shop floor
myself,

I could probably do a bloke's cut
in 15 minutes.

But that would come with time,

Looking at
the business in barbering,

it's apparent that there isn't a lot
of money to be made straightaway.

The end goal is to be
a successful barber,

to have a possible business,
to work alongside his partner.

But this isn't an industry that
you should rush into straightaway.

He needs experience.

The more you earn,
the more pressure you've got,

the bigger you become,

after challenge. Of course it is.

She's happy to take them on.
But she's never happy.

That's the thing. She's never happy.
Right. She always wants more.

I think boils down to the athlete,

you know, the boxing
and, you know, that inner challenge.

I met Nicola on our Level 3
make-up artistry course.

When you first start teaching,

you can kind of tell the ones
that are really passionate about it,

or ones who are a bit unsure,
but it's nice seeing them grow.

This one is from a photo shoot
that we did here.

So, this is a work experience day
that she took part in.

But Nicky isn't only training
in make-up.

So, she did the body art, she'll
come in, she'll do some airbrushing

and the hand-painted flowers,
as well.

So she was committed throughout.
Yeah, that was really good.

Maxine is taking on
some of Nicky's coursework.

As a skilled beautician,
how hard can it be?

So, we have a client
in with us today,

so we've got our lovely Sam.

He's gonna be trouble
with a capital T.

Normally, that's the takeaway.

As ever,

is most interested
in the bottom line.

If you don't mind me asking,

what would an average make-up artist
make a week?

Day rates can be
anywhere between 150 to 300,

but again, it takes time
to get to those higher rates,

and you've gotta have
a good portfolio.

And all that takes time.

But there isn't a lot of money
to be made straightaway.

If Nicola... The next two years
should be about study.

Keeping the eye on the prize,
as I always say.

You know, keep going forward,
sharing ideas together,

getting as much experience
as possible,

and you do cut your losses
at the beginning.

I've enjoyed, Yeah, getting creative
and understanding what she does.

They're trying desperately
to get out of it,

and... that's why
they're doing these extra courses,

trying to better themselves

and to try and get an extra income
into the house

so that maybe, you know,
they can have nicer things in life.

of her super-successful friends.

blow-dried, coloured, cut, the lot.

Normally, I don't have
a chance to come to a salon

or have my hair done. I normally
just do it myself with box dyes.

Would you be open if we talk, say,

Nicky has dreams of
her own beauty salon with Danny.

Our main thing is
we don't know where to start. Where.

When I started, I had
no business background whatsoever,

no business experience.

Did business studies at school,
that was, like, nothing major.

But you learn as you go.

Like, I wouldn't let that stop you
from going after it.

Go after your dream,
and you can learn as you go.

He's done all the men side,
but obviously, he wants to learn

women's side as well
so he can do both.

Yeah. So I'm not throwing you in
too much in the deep end,

but we are still getting you
in there,

and we'll try a nice blow-dry
on nice, long hair?

As well, I think

Maxine's learnt that Danny squeezes
charity boxing into his hectic life,

and now she's visiting
the gym that organises the events.

So, what does Danny do here?

He'd be
with a group of complete beginners,

all very varied people,

so you get guys that are digging
the roads boxing next to solicitors,

which is really nice cos it puts
a real mixture of people together.

They'll all train together
as a group here for eight weeks.

And at the end of eight weeks,

they'll all box each other
on a pretty big show,

with sort of 3,000 spectators.

Danny's put in
an incredible fund raising shift

for cancer and suicide charities.

So, how much commitment
does it, like, require

for someone
who's, you know, gonna get fit

within six to eight weeks and fight?

It takes a lot of commitment, as
you know from your past experience,

but the person that walks in
on that first night of training

isn't the same person that's
gonna be stepping in that ring,

you know, at the end of it.

Hearing about his charity boxing

has given Maxine a huge respect
for Danny.

In Danny's case... stepping into
the ring and doing a charity fight,

that takes a lot of guts.

With a ring so close, Maxine
can't resist stepping into it.

I will go with one of these.

It's hard to just push through
that wall to do it.

We're gonna need to break
that barrier,

or we're gonna catch
a wasted opportunity here.

I'm in, like, a place
where it's hard to spend

because I'm always budgeting,

but I know that
it'll be beneficial if I did.

Danny and Nicky overcome
their budgeting instincts

and sensibly put most of their cash
into the business dream.

This could be good if you need it
for business and coursework.

It'll make a massive difference.

It's got a big screen,
mine's a quarter of the size.

I'll be able to see it a lot better.
A printer as well.

So we can print business cards,
any paperwork, flyers, advertising.

It's wireless so we connect
our phones up to it and everything.

It's definitely a massive investment
into our future

that we would not
have been able to do

without being on
an experience like this.

has always been to not achieve.

That is very kind and generous of

I just feel
for anybody in this position

cos sometimes,
you don't know how to get out of it.

when I came in,

I just thought, "Well,
why are you not using your time?"

House improvements, you know,
doing that type of thing.

That was my genuine thought,
but it quickly changed

because I realised
how many people lived in the house,

it's on a different level.

Your struggles
are different to mine.

Your struggle's about food,
it's about electricity.

Mine's up keeping
something that I've created.

Yeah.
You know, and, erm...

Yeah, it's difficult.

Maxine's been grappling with whether
or not she can help Nicky and Danny.

Obviously, thinking a lot while
I've been at your house about...

...my situation, your situation,
and ways that I can help you.

And every day, I found out something
about you both, but I thought,

"I can't help in that way,
but maybe I can help in that way."

So, I've gone to... watch what you
do and what you're interested in

and obviously, the make-up side,
and I've met your tutors.

It's not the immediate salon dream,

but a plan to give Danny and Nicky
the crucial experience they need,

starting with a surprise for Nicky.

So it got me thinking,

and, you know,
I have to put my business head on.

I thought, "She's not gonna make
much money. It's very competitive."

So I thought, "well, what can I do?"

if I was to give you
a certain amount of training,

and I mentor you to go on to be
successful

because I like a challenge,

and I wanted to give you around
about £10,000 worth of training.

Wow! I'll put the work in.

you can't go down further.

and hopefully, they'll keep you on.

The plan is a major step

towards Nicky and Danny
owning their own salon.
