during the Tylenol scare?

- I was the rock for
my mom and dad.

I was trying to kind of keep
it together for everybody.

Just looking at every emotion,

everything everyone
was going through.

And as a child, it just
really hits you hard.

I just felt like...

kind of like Isabelle,
for me, is my rock now.

- 500 to... 550 rather to 100...

- Now I see my dad, like, almost

withering away just
because he has, like,

no one left, except for us.

- It almost caused
a national panic.

- These deaths have
been associated with

the presence of
cyanide in two containers

of Extra-Strength Tylenol.

- Do not take Tylenol
until further notice.

- Cyanide is so deadly
an amount the size of a pea

can kill you.

- This was a stone-cold mystery.

And people had died,
and many of them

were in the same family.

- I just knew
something was wrong.

- Paula was murdered.

She was just murdered.

- We know that there's
somebody out there

trying to poison people.

- How could he pull off the
crime of the century perfectly

and not get caught?

- We're actively
pursuing this investigation.

This is not collecting
dust on a shelf.

- This could be our guy.

- Do you think you
know who did it?

- Yes.

- You're going to let
a murderer just go?

- Hi.

- An important message
from the makers of Tylenol.

- You are all aware of
recent tragic events in which

Extra-Strength
Tylenol capsules were

criminally tampered
with in limited areas

after they left our factory.

- Families were ruined by this.

The mother coming home
from the hospital with her baby...

brand-new baby... she died.

We've got the girl who died.

You've got the airline
stewardess who died.

I mean, it's just, good
people who had a life to live

died because of
someone's selfish

and criminal act.

- Authorities, who
are conducting

an intensive investigation
into the poisoning deaths,

feel tonight that some
progress is being made

in the search for
the killer or killers.

They are zeroing in on
fewer than a dozen suspects.

- People then identified
the instrument of murder

with something they had
in their medicine cabinet.

That scares people.

- I do, in fact, feel confident
that the case will be solved.

I feel confident
from the standpoint

that we have devoted
our best personnel

to our investigation.

- When I moved, I just
put everything in the bins.

Oh, one more.

- It's nice and light.

- I know.

This one's the
lightest one of them all.

God knows what we're doing.

My hair was dark then.

And here she is.

That infectious

- Yeah, this is a good one

God, I can't believe
I had such dark hair.

- I know.

- That's me 40 years ago.

Oh.

Here is a perfect picture.

- Oh, that's a really good one.

- This is the perfect
picture of Paula.

- Yeah.

- That's how she
was, drink in hand

and big smile and big hair.

- Mm-hmm, big hair.

- Oh, too many memories here.

- I'm Jean Regula Leavengood,

and I was a dear
friend of Paula's.

I considered her at
the time my best friend.

I'm Carols Laabs.

I flew for American Airlines.

Paula flew for United Airlines.

- We always had
bottles of Tylenol.

First of all, with
the time changes,

you know, you never felt rested,

so you'd get a headache.

Or we'd gotten together
for cocktails or a party,

you'd have a headache.

So it was part of our lives.

And we could always pick
up trips to earn extra money,

and that's what Paula
had done that day with the...

we thought she was in Vegas.

Come to find out, she
never made the Vegas turn.

And she had given me a ride
downtown the whole month.

And then this time, "She
said my flight got in early.

"Yours is running late.

"I'm going to go on
downtown, but I've got

wonderful news to tell you."

They used to put our paychecks
in a box on the counter,

if you can believe that.

And I just happened
to flip through it.

And I saw mine, and
then I went and saw hers.

And I said to the crew
desk, I said, "Wow,

"I can't believe
Paula didn't pick up

our paychecks last night."

And he said, "Oh, she
was a no-show yesterday."

I said, "What do you
mean she was a no-show?"

And I came downtown,
called her sister,

and told her that Paula had
missed her trip yesterday.

Sorry.

I just knew something was wrong.

I don't know, it's
just a feeling I had.

We went up to Paula's
apartment together.

Carol Prince, her
sister, got there.

We took the keys
and went upstairs

and unlocked the door.

And her body was on the floor.

And Carol and I both, I
think we were so stunned.

But we both... I
thought, we didn't

know how long she'd been dead.

We thought someone could
have still been in her condo

with her.

We just didn't know,
so we didn't go in.

So we came down to
my place and called 911.

- Her body was discovered
last night inside her apartment

on Chicago's Near North Side.

Investigators say it appears she

had collapsed into her closet.

Her sister, Carol Prince,
says she last talked

with Paula on Wednesday.

It is believed that Paula Prince

took the Tylenol that
killed her sometime

Wednesday evening.

- And 40 years later, you
can close your eyes and see it.

- I can.

Something like that
you never forget.

- Do you wonder what
the wonderful news was?

- As it turns out,
she met this guy.

And I guess they just
connected immediately,

and they were
going to get married.

You know, I think she would
have loved to have been married

and be a mother, and
that never happened.

And it's also maddening
that some evil person

could get away with it.

- While authorities
continue their investigation

into the latest cyanide death,

that of 35-year-old
Paula Prince...

- Fix your tie for you?
- Okay.

I am David C. Williams.

Retired colonel with
the Illinois State police.

At the time of the
Tylenol murders in 1982

I was a criminal
investigations unit commander

in our Des Plaines Office.

- Meanwhile, representatives
of Johnson & Johnson,

the maker of Tylenol, stood by
at the Rush-Presbyterian-Saint

Luke's Poison Control Center
to receive bottles brought

in today by anyone
who has Tylenol with

the suspected lot numbers.

- You have to focus
on Johnson & Johnson.

Were they... were they target?

So I spent, and a few
other people like me,

spent time with Johnson
& Johnson people

talking to them about,
"Let's dig through your files.

"Let's find out who
may have had a vendetta

"strong enough
against your company

to try to destroy you this way."

- At first, the
Tylenol didn't really

say anything for a while.

Because they had
to be... they had to be

clear about what had happened.

And they certainly
were not going

to make a blanket statement
and then have to go back on that.

Because who would
ever trust them again?

- In Washington, the head of
Johnson & Johnson spoke out.

Wayne Nelson feels somebody
has it in for his company.

- All I can tell you is it's
another deliberate attempt

to sabotage the product.

I am indicating that this
is a clear cut example

of indiscriminate murder.

- So it was random.

Was it focused on
Johnson & Johnson,

the makers of Tylenol?

- Meanwhile, in Fort
Washington, Pennsylvania,

where Johnson & Johnson
subsidiary McNeil Consumer

Products, makes
Tylenol, Michael Schaffer...

the Chief Toxicologist
of the Cook County

Medical Examiner's Office...

toured the plant.

Outside the facility,
Schaffer told our IJ Hudson

that he was satisfied that
no cyanide contamination

occurred in the plant.

- Unequivocally,
yes, I would say that.

I don't think you could
probably have any other more

secure system than
following the guidelines

of McNeil or any other
pharmaceutical company.

- In other developments
today, Johnson & Johnson

announced that its subsidiary,
McNeil Consumer Products,

has suspended production
on all Tylenol capsules.

- Today, Tylenol bottles
filled with capsules, tablets,

and liquid were coming
in by the thousands

to the basement
of the Daley Center

where Department of
Health workers were logging

and sorting them for testing.

- At this time, Roger,
we have analyzed

in excess of 39,000 capsules,
an equal number of tablets.

In response to
your next inquiry,

which is going to be how
much has come in here,

I can best describe it
to you in terms of tons.

- Have you found
any with cyanide?

- At this point, we have not.

- Why would a thing like
this happen to this company?

Why would they use
Tylenol as a murder weapon?

Which was ingenious.

Now, some people may
say crazy, but ingenious.

Who would think of that?

- The work of more than
100 law enforcement agents

is being coordinated out
of the center in Des Plaines.

They're working in teams.

Attorney General Fahner
says they're following up

on different
theories and talking

to a lot of people
who might have

had access to the Tylenol.

- It seems more and more
likely that the tamperings occurred

at the lower level, that is just

before it gets to the store.

And once again, I
can't be more precise

than to say that's what the
investigators have told me,

and this is what
we're developing,

and that's the theory
we're proceeding upon.

- It's been a long time.

I don't really come up this way.

This is where the media
would set up with all

their cameras and things.

The focus of our investigation

and the homicides
we are investigating...

We had press
conferences... not just me,

but I was certainly
the lead of it...

in the early days to let
people know what was going on

and say, "Do not take Tylenol.

Get this stuff off the shelves."

It was a mess.

I mean, you'd walk
out, and you thought

you were reporting
in for the Super Bowl

to go give a press
conference, really.

I mean, it's much
busier out here now.

The cross traffic, the
shopping centers, and...

they're all pretty new.

A lot of us were packed
into a small space.

We had about ten desks around.

So we would do our
work, and then people

would go and do their thing.

- That there is no progress.

- My name is Ty Fahner.

Back in 1982, I was the
Illinois attorney general.

So every call that came in,
we took a name, we logged in,

put down what their tip
was, and they were run down

on a daily basis, distributed.

- Police began collecting
Tylenol capsules

from area stores and taking
them to a protected warehouse.

One investigating team is
concentrating on a warehouse

that may have
distributed at least one

of the killer containers,

a Jewel warehouse
in Melrose Park.

Employee records are
being sought from warehouses

and distribution points in
case a disgruntled employee

is to blame.

- We don't know
at this point in time

if... to use a hypothetical...
some screwball could have gone

and purchased a large
quantity of these materials

and bottles and
then changed them

and literally gone back
and put them on the shelves

in the stores for whatever
reasons that would

make a sick person do that.

We would just
divide up the leads...

is the best way I
can put it for you...

and they would be distributed
and run down and either closed

out or followed up upon.

- There's somebody
who's doing this.

And every single one of
these cases are connected.

- Roger Arnold... 48 years old.

Authorities are
interested in Arnold,

because he had
cyanide in his home,

because he worked
at a Jewel warehouse,

because he worked
with the father of one

of the cyanide victims,

because he had
guns and literature

about poisons in his home.

- He gave us a
consent to search.

And during the
search for the cyanide,

we located five guns
and a lot of ammunition.

- Police confiscated
a .30 caliber rifle,

4 handguns,
ammunition, and books

on explosives and poisons.

Police say Arnold has refused
to take a lie detector test

but maintain he
has no connection

to the Tylenol case.

- The man has 12, 13
years on the job with Jewel,

took care of things around
the house on the outside.

He was friendly.

- Arnold visited his wife
at Central DuPage Hospital

several times.

Across the street, Frank's
Foods, the source of some

of the tainted Tylenol.

- I'm going to speak
for him, if I could.

And I'd like to
just say that Roger

is innocent of any
pending or suspected

charges by any law
enforcement agent at this time.

- We interviewed these people.

It led to this, which might mean

you've got three
other people to talk to,

because this person
mentioned a few names.

- Authorities are stepping up
the hunt for Kevin Masterson

of Lombard, who reportedly
had a long-standing

grudge against Jewel.

Until two weeks ago, Masterson
rented an upstairs room

in this Lombard house where
last week authorities found

two capsules of
Extra-Strength Tylenol

and a box of empty
gelatin capsules,

like the kind used in Tylenol.

The landlord says
Masterson was mad at Jewel,

because he claimed
his ex-wife was

roughed up at a Jewel store when

she was held for shoplifting.

Masterson thought this incident

somehow led to their divorce,

but investigators are reportedly

concentrating
their search for him

in Florida and California.

- Now, a lot of the time on
these kinds of investigations,

you're chasing shadows.

- State investigators are
attaching new significance

to the discovery of
Tylenol bottles and capsules

in an Elgin motel
parking lot last Tuesday.

Two Kane County
sheriff's deputies

found 24 bottles and some
empty Tylenol capsules

strewn about the parking lot.

The officers later
became ill with symptoms

one poison expert
says are consistent with

cyanide exposure to the skin.

State investigators now
say it is a substantial lead

in the investigation.

- Some had been broken
open and emptied out

and put back together again.

- But they did not become
alarmed until two days later

when the news broke
about the Tylenol death.

Although the cartons
had vanished by then,

some capsules were recovered.

- Who would think of that?

You know?

What kind of mind
thinks about that?

Were these people targeted?

Probably not, because
they bought these...

they all bought these
Tylenols at various drugstores

in their neighborhoods.

How could you target
somebody to do that?

Don't know.

- Fahner said authorities
have now tested as many as

2 million Tylenol shelf
samples turned in so far

and that no cyanide
was found in any of them.

Fahner also said that
as of today there is still

no evidence of
industrial sabotage

or a manufacturing mistake.

- The police were stymied.

Remember, this is
a unique situation.

I don't think any law
enforcement official goes

to work in the morning thinking
they're going to have to solve

some bizarre mystery
of seven poisoned

people in different locations.

I don't think there was
any playbook for that.

- As soon as one lead
reaches a dead end,

there is another
tip to track down.

Some of those leads
are coming from the stores

where the killer
capsules were purchased.

- A picture of the "Tribune's"
back here in the Florida room.

We have it hanging
on the wall right here.

This is the "Tribune"
front page 1982.

- Well, see the thing is, if
you put too much definition,

then you start getting
the little... the matte

finish on the photographs.

- The search for the
Tylenol cyanide killer

continues to center
on this photograph.

It was taken by a security
camera in a drugstore

on the Near North Side the night

flight attendant Paula
Prince purchased

the cyanide-laced
capsules that killed her.

- Oh, Walgreens was
right away thinking,

"Could this be the
guy with Paula...

"that could be with
the stewardess?

"Is he the killer?

But the authorities
said, "We got to find out

who this guy is."

Right away, they thought they
had a real break in the case.

- The photo is here
with me in the forefront,

my friend, Fred,
in the background.

Paula Prince is here
purchasing the Tylenol.

And the mysterious
man of interest

is in the far-rear in the photo.

- One of the places where
death resulted and saw

a person standing
around and taking

something out of his
pocket in that general area.

- We used to relax
every Sunday night

and watch the reruns
of "The Rockford Files."

We used to get
stoned and chill out.

So we headed down...

to prep for the
following Sunday night,

we headed down to
Old Town to buy a bong.

And we had to stop
at the Walgreens

to use the cash station.

And it was there
that the picture

was snapped with Paula.

And it was just, like, whoa.

It didn't quite settle in
what it was all about.

It was just kind of
cool at that time.

"Oh, I'm on the front
page of the 'Tribune.'"

But then it kind of hit
that somebody died.

Someone was murdered.

You saw her at the
end before her death.

And she was purchasing something

that was going to kill her.

It was the end of her life.

- As for the investigation
into the murders,

state authorities
have no shortage

of tips from the public.

The problem, says
Attorney General Fahner,

is that some of those
tips are misleading.

- We had a lady the other
day... to help you understand...

who called in and gave
information that was highly

credible and made sense.

And we quickly dispatched
two agents thinking we

could have solved this crime.

She said she had
definite information,

and it all made sense.

When we got there, we
said, "Now, where did you get

this information?

And she says, "I
have a magic pen,

"and it made me
write these things out,

and I've told you about it."

Now, if I brought that out
to you, you'd be disturbed,

and I would be too.

- And much of the information
you get is, in the long run,

not valuable.

But it's got to be asked.

The questions have to be asked.

- Although other state
offices were closed

on this Columbus Day holiday,

the task force
investigating the cyanide

murders was still at work.

Over the weekend,
investigators had knocked down

several more false leads
and tied up some loose ends

in the case but made
no substantial progress.

- But frankly, the
authorities, let's face it,

reality, they're up a creek
without a paddle at that time.

They didn't know what
had happened, either.

- As for the
investigation itself,

there does not seem to have
been any sudden acceleration

of progress.

And State Attorney
General Fahner

is meeting less and
less with the media

to talk about progress.

One by one, the leads are
checked out and discarded.

And consequently, the list of
available leads grows smaller.

- This was the kind
of murder no one

in that room had ever worked.

This is... this is nuts.

Who would do a thing
like this to this magnitude?

- New cases of food tampering

are being reported
tonight in Illinois

and around the country.

- There were some copycats.

Of course, there always are.

In these notorious,
well-documented,

highly-publicized events,

you have people out there
who, for whatever reason,

want to do something similar.

- In Winnetka, a bottle of
theatrical makeup exploded.

In Ottawa, a broken needle
in a package of candy bars.

In Peoria Heights, a darning
needle in a tube of ointment.

In Mount Vernon, a sewing
needle hidden inside an apple.

And elsewhere in
the country, there

have been razor
blades found in hot dogs,

prescription pills baked
into store-bought brownies.

- It sort of like it opened
up a Pandora's Box of, "Gee,

"look at the mayhem
we can cause.

"Look at the trouble
we can cause

by simply tampering with a
product that's on the shelf,

and it doesn't really have a lot

of safety protections to it.

- The Tylenol tragedies
have made this

the Halloween tainted by fear.

Chicago area
communities are responding

to the new fears
and the new realities

this Halloween
in different ways.

Many children, like these
youngsters in Forest Park,

are being legally
limited to a few hours

of daylight trick-or-treating.

Some towns are
holding supervised parties

as an alternative
to trick-or-treating.

And some families, trying
to avoid store-bought candy

altogether, are
holding baking sessions

so they will know
what their children

will be getting ahead of time.

Before school got out for
this Halloween weekend today,

many children were
getting just one more

warning from their teachers.

- I'm awfully scared for them.

I told them to make
sure not to eat the candy

as they go along the street,

to go home and have
it checked for anything,

to smell the food,
to touch the food.

- She got to let her
mom check it in case

if there's any poison in it

- What kind of
people would do that?

- Crazy people.

- Why aren't the authorities...
why can't the authorities

arrest this man?

He's a madman.

There's no question about it.

It baffled many people,
until the Lewis thing broke.

- The story broke in early
editions of the "Sun-Times"

and "Chicago Tribune."

It told of a letter sent to
the manufacturers of Tylenol

in which further cyanide
poisonings were threatened

unless $1 million was
placed in a postal box

at Continental Bank in Chicago.

- I'm Jeremy Margolis.

At the time of the
Tylenol killings,

I was an assistant United States

attorney here in Chicago.

I was the federal
prosecutor assigned

to the Tylenol investigation.

- The original extortion
letter from James Lewis

to the makers of Tylenol

was addressed to
Johnson & Johnson,

parent of McNeil Laboratories.

The letter read,

"If you want to
stop the killing,

then wire $1 million to an
account in a Chicago bank."

- The Tylenol extortion
letters were received,

one by Johnson & Johnson
and one at the White House.

The Pitney-Bowes
postage meter that

was used to frank the
envelopes had a serial number.

That serial number
traced back to a company

called Lakeside Travel.

The Continental Illinois Bank...

now defunct bank...
account number

that was listed as the
place that $1 million

should be wired in
order to stop the killings

was also the bank account
listed to Lakeside Travel.

Bureau agents very
quickly determined

who had owned Lakeside Travel,

because it was
then out of business,

a man named Frederick
Miller McCahey.

They found Mr. McCahey
and interviewed him and asked,

in effect, "Who on
Earth would have

"access to your
Pitney-Bowes postage meter

"and your bank
account number that

would write letters like this?"

And he came up with
James and Leann Lewis.

- The first name
he came up with.

- Oh, immediately.

- Authorities say the
fingerprints of James Lewis,

who lived in Chicago
as Robert Richardson,

matched fingerprints
found on the ransom note

sent to Johnson & Johnson.

- He recalled a series
of incidents in which

Leann Lewis, who had been a
temporary employee of Lakeside

Travel before its
demise, was irate,

because her last
paycheck bounced

when the travel agency closed.

James Lewis... her
husband... was more irate.

So according to
Lewis, the letters

were written to draw
attention to McCahey

so that his bouncing
of checks would be

discovered by the authorities.

I don't think he was nearly
as bright as he thought he was.

- The couple vanished
on September 3rd.

That was the day they
moved out of their apartment

on Chicago's North Side,
where the Lewis's had lived

for nine months under
the name of Robert

and Nancy Richardson.

- We don't know the answers
to whether or not they committed

the cyanide killings.

We do know that they
are the kind of people that

are capable of it, and their
prior behavior would indicate

that they're capable of it.

And that's why
they are, obviously,

of some prime nature,
if you want to call

them a suspect or a lead.

- Still no direct
evidence that they

are the ones you need to
look for in the actual killings.

- We have no
direct evidence they

are the ones we need to
look for in the actual killings.

We obviously are
putting this effort forth

because we think that...

what we do know
about them and what

is unfolding about
the two individuals

leads us to believe that we...

we could answer
that very quickly if we

could get them into custody.

- Lewis looked
seedy, unbalanced,

he had done some
unstable things.

He acted strange.
He said strange things.

As I recall, he
bragged to some people

he was going to get
even with a lot of people.

So he became a strong suspect.

- It was here in
Kansas City, Missouri,

that police made
the connection that

has become the
hottest lead so far

in the search for the
Tylenol cyanide killer.

Kansas City Police
Sergeant David Barton

was watching an
evening news broadcast

when he saw a picture of
a man who looked familiar,

a man known in Kansas
City as James Lewis,

a suspect in a bizarre
1978 murder case that

was dismissed on a technicality

and a suspect in a
land fraud scheme.

- The victim, 72-year-old
Raymond West,

was found in the
attic of his home,

his legs cut off,

his body stuffed
in a plastic bag

and so badly decomposed
that the coroner could not

determine the cause of death.

But the Kansas City
murder connection

is what caused authorities in
Chicago to take a second look

at the extortion
letter and begin

forming a psychological
profile of the man

who may have written it.

- And it's obviously an
important lead because the fact

that he was involved
in a murder before,

common sense will
tell you that perhaps

that along with the Continental
Bank attempted extortion note

would make it more
promising than anything else.

- The Kansas City detectives
met with Chicago Police

Commander Kenneth Curran
and his investigators all day

going over cases of
evidence that might provide

links to the Tylenol killings.

- There was reason to
believe, was there not,

at the time that he fled in
1981 on the theft charges

that he did come to Chicago?

- Yes, we do have him in Chicago

as late as February of 1982.

- And the question becomes,
why was there not a hunt

for him here at that time?

- I can't comment on that.

- And he made an
impression on neighbors

who considered him strange.

- I'll never forget those
eyes as long as I live.

I would remember those eyes.

And that...

- What was memorable
about his eyes?

- I don't know.

I can't explain it.

But I think maybe
that might have

been the reason some people
might have been afraid of him.

- So most of the time,
he spent a lot of time

filling out resumes,
sending them to companies,

and investigating companies
to see what they did.

- He always seemed
to be a real quiet person

but very knowledgeable.

He spent a lot of
time at the library.

- While a nationwide search
for James and Leann Lewis

continues, authorities
here in Chicago

are awaiting the results of
an enhancement photo made

by Space Agency officials.

Investigators are hopeful
a blowup by NASA officials

will determine if Lewis is the
man standing by a drugstore

checkout line when
cyanide victim Paula Prince

purchased a bottle of Tylenol.

- So there it is, right?

- Right.

Right.

- He was up at the
checkout counter,

and that was really vivid.

And he was just
glaring at Paula.

- Yeah, she still
had her uniform.

She just came in from Las Vegas.

- Right, she's just
come in from a trip.

Well, I just knew in my heart

it wasn't him,

because he no more looked
like that man in the picture

than the man on the moon.

- The man who hired James
Lewis as a tax consultant

and worked closely with
him for almost two months

says he doubts that the man
in the Walgreens photo is Lewis.

He said Lewis, whom he
knew as Robert Richardson,

bears only a slight
resemblance to the man

in the photo taken by a store
camera on September 29.

- I would say the chances
are 9 out of 10 it's not him.

- Channel 2 News took a
closer look at the photograph

today using digital
electronics to produce

this image of the bearded man.

Chicago police say he
resembles James Lewis.

- Looks like him, yes.

But it doesn't... his
shoulders are too broad

as far as I'm concerned.

He wasn't that heavy of a man.

- He was a tall man
with thin shoulders.

And quite honestly, I'm
very doubtful that that is him

in the Walgreens photograph.

- I remember contacting
the FBI, because they said,

"If anyone has any
information, call this number."

So I called the FBI and told
them that I was in the picture

that they had published.

So they came out... an agent
came out to my apartment

and interviewed us...

interviewed me.

I wasn't afraid
to talk to the FBI,

because I knew I
wasn't a suspect.

The FBI was particularly
interested in this gentleman

in the back of the photo.

They wanted to know
if we noticed anything,

if we remembered
him being there,

if we noticed anything
unusual about him.

We were oblivious.

We did not remember him at all.

- Do you feel that a
legitimate identification

has been made in this case?

That the man in that
photo is Lewis Richardson...

whatever his name is?

- Only could be.

We have people that are
experts in making comparisons

doing blowups and so forth.

- If, in fact, that
is Mr. Richardson

in line behind Paula Prince,
that's tangible evidence.

- That is.

And it's such a time
as I could tell you

and the people with the FBI,
who have been working on this

with us, and the
task force members

thought that it would be...
that would be tangible evidence.

You're absolutely correct.

And I think that might help

complete the circle
circumstantially almost

as much as a fingerprint.

- And so the nationwide
hunt continues

for the couple known
in Chicago as Robert

and Nancy Richardson.

- Except for a
suspect's photograph

taped to a filing cabinet,

the task force
headquarters looks exactly

as it did three weeks ago.

Agents comparing notes
and working the phones,

and still no direct link
to the seven killings.

Where does the
investigation stand now?

Investigators continue
their surveillance

of one man in connection
with the Tylenol case,

Roger Arnold, but have charged
him with nothing in connection

with the tragedy.

And surveillance
was called off one

relative of one of
the victims after he

took and passed a lie test.

- My name is Roy Lane.

I'm a special agent
with the Federal Bureau

of Investigation, or the FBI.

And I was one of the agents
assigned to the Tylenol

murders in 1982.

Roger Arnold was
a suspect that was

originally developed by the
Chicago Police Department.

And he came to their attention,

because he told a bartender

that he was
interested in chemicals.

And the bartender
didn't like Roger Arnold,

so he called the police and said

Roger Arnold was
potentially a subject

of the Tylenol murders.

Roger Arnold eventually
just went into the background

as a suspect.

And the next thing
I heard about him,

he was arrested for a homicide.

- The jury found Roger Arnold
guilty of murdering a man

outside a Lincoln Avenue Bar.

Prosecutors said he
had mistaken the victim

for the North Side bar owner

who gave Arnold's name to
police as a possible suspect

in the Tylenol killings.

The man Arnold
shot was 46-year-old

John Stanisha, a computer
salesman and father of three.

Prosecutors argued that Arnold
shot Stanisha after mistaking

him for another
heavyset bearded man

who testified in court today.

When Arnold took
the witness stand,

he said he bought a
.45 caliber handgun

to protect himself.

Shortly before the verdict
tonight, a clean-shaven Arnold

said he became the victim of
the suspicion that surrounded

him ever since he was questioned

and released in the
October 1982 investigation.

- Could you elaborate
for us why you

consider yourself a victim?

- Because I am going to
end up one way or the other

in prison because of this thing.

I was not in my right state
of mind when this happened.

I wouldn't have
a gun with me if I

wasn't afraid that somebody
was going to get me.

- Tonight's verdict
brings investigators

no closer to solving the
Tylenol cyanide killings.

But for Roger Arnold, the
consequences are serious.

The murder conviction
carries a penalty

of up to 40 years in prison.

Sentencing is scheduled
for Valentine's Day.

coming out of this tavern

thinking he was going
to square this case.

- There's no evidence
linking Roger Arnold

to the Tylenol poisonings.

- What authorities
have at this point

is a great deal of information,

case reports, 26 volumes of
them, totaling 11,500 pages.

Individuals checked... 16,702.

Companies contacted... 10,246.

License plates noted...

Phone numbers listed... 8,201.

In all, authorities have spent

12,800 man hours.

- I think the fact that
there wasn't a suspect...

one person to point to so that
everyone could sleep at night

and say, "See, they
got the bad guy"...

no, that went on for years.

That's true.

- We had conducted
investigations

in short or long form
of over 1,000 leads.

- How many?

- Over 1,000.

Most of them didn't have a
lot going for them, but I'd say

there were a good
100 in there that...

that were serious opportunities.

- Yet this morning
on our radios,

we were hearing
the following report.

Fahner said the federal,
state, and, local task force

investigating the
seven poisonings

were closer than we have
ever been to ending the case.

- I know at the time you
obviously truly believed

that you guys were close.

- I did, several times.

- Several times.

- It bothered me
a great deal then

and a great deal now, because
innocent lives were taken.

It bothered me,
because it took us

so long to figure out what we
knew and what we didn't know.

- I feel, always,
that it's not complete,

and it's just really sloppy.

Something is fishy and weird.

The more I think
about it, I think either...

I have many things I think.

I think it's either...

it was, maybe, a terrorist
attack on America.

Maybe someone paid
someone not to say anything

and move on with the case...

I mean, stop the case.

Something's not right.

It just doesn't make any sense.

- Someone to be that evil
or do something like that

is just horrendous.

An evil person.

A person that just
doesn't care about people,

that has a life that
they're just sad,

and they don't know
what to do with their life.

- He took everything,

my whole family,

my memories, future memories
that we could have had,

beautiful memories of...

Maybe future cousins

and beautiful moments we
could have shared as a family,

laughter, and he took away

the happiness.

- We have made the
unequivocal commitment

to rebuild this business
under the Tylenol name.

We are coming back.

- You shouldn't be
selling any drug that you

can tamper with, period.

- Back then, you could
walk into a drugstore

and open a pill bottle.

You didn't have to open a seal.

Pop.

Now, what's that about?

- I don't think they were
thinking about lives lost.

The bottom line was profit.

- Fugitive James Lewis
says neither he, nor his wife,

are responsible for the
seven cyanide murders.

The envelope the note
came in had a New York City

postmark, suggesting
the Lewis couple

might still be in New York.

- The rage I went through.

I wanted five minutes
with whoever did it.

- So who do you believe did it?

- I've seen no
evidence to implicate

anyone other than Mr. Lewis.

- All signs pointed
to James Lewis.

- Do you think Lewis did it?

- I've never speculated
on who I believe did it.

- Do you think you
know who did it?

- Yes.
