From the outside,
It's just another house.

But when you step inside,
it's just another world.

I mean, you would never know
there was such a place here.

People usually put their cars
in garages,

but I live with the cars.

As far as, like,
restoring a historic house goes,

this is something
I would not recommend to anybody.

It is a massive undertaking.

Sinking this much money
into one thing.

My name is Krislin Kreis.

I am 28 years old,
and I'm a photographer.

My name is Drew Davis.

I'm 29 years old and I am a lawyer.

We live at the Wonder House,

which is this magical mystical place
in the middle of nowhere

that was built in 1926.

What I remember about the Wonder
House, it was just a big playhouse.

We played hide-and-seek in there.
It was a tourist attraction at that time.

It was very sad
to see the house abandoned.

It really became an eyesore,

but I think Krislin and Drew,
they will restore it.

They're young, they're energetic.

They've got a lot of work
ahead of them.

Hope they got plenty of money.

I looking for a house
at the time. Second?

- Second date we found the house.
- Yeah, we actually...

She asked me
if I'd heard of the Wonder House.

It was a real mess.

I mean,
it had been abandoned for five years,

And it had no running water
or electricity.

I saw a for sale sign on it,
I was like, "Man! That is awesome."

I told her right then,
"I'm buying this house."

I grew up looking at old cool
houses. I loved that as a kid,

and I think it's just great coincidence
that kind of my vision,

what I really like,
what Krislen really likes,

kind of seems to really line up
with the original builder of the house.

I'm trying to be
as true as possible

to what Schuck's dream
and vision for the house was.

Everyone to go for kind of
a darker look.

Keep it Gothic, you know?

The carved furniture that kind of thing.
Make a little bit on the edge of spooky.

The Wonder House has 24 rooms
over four floors,

And is roughly 10,000 square feet.

So at this point, we decided
to focus on just that first floor.

The first room we enter
is the parlor.

It needs to be cleared out
and cleaned up.

Then we'll move
in antique furniture,

Setting the scene
for a Gothic-inspired interior.

The most work needed
is going to be in the dining room.

It needs new flooring,
painting throughout,

Furnishing, and
finishing touches.

Such as antique gold curtains.

The sun room and study
are nearly finished,

But they do need a little bit
more love.

One of the primary reasons
for opening up for tours

is to help support
the restoration of the house.

It can be difficult having so many rooms
that are just completely...

blank canvases, but as long as you have
a framework to work in...

For me, it was research Conrad Schuck.

How did he have the house,
so I can at least be inspired by him.

He had, you know, pickled snakes,

Taxidermied birds and animals
and I was like, "That's really cool."

I've always loved historical stuff.

I was very excited to hear.

That there's even a human finger
at one point.

At that point it was, "Let me find
some taxidermy when I'm out antiquing.

Let me find some skulls."
I'll get back to that theme of the house.

It is a massive undertaking.

Sinking this much money
into one thing is scary.

Essentially, every single paycheck,
I put it into the house.

It's a money pit... I guess. You need to create
revenue streams for the older properties.

If it's not generating revenue,

there's only so much you can do
before it bleeds you dry.

I regret to inform you
that the financial situation is now dire.

We're definitely gonna need
to bring in,

I would guess, probably at minimum...

$1,500 a month...

from these tours,
to keep things running.

Just the general house expenses.

I think our goal should
probably be $2,000 month.

So, what are our options.

If we cannot make the $2,000
goal per month from tours?

The ruin is me...

...it's my reflection.

This house is my husband's house.

He built it before he knew me.
It's definitely different

to... whatever I knew before.

I'm a hotel critic for El Pa is newspaper.

I've traveled for 35 years,

And visited up
to four hotels a day.

I could have bought a house
anywhere in the world,

But I am simple.

I've learned to seek simplicity,

So I bought a ruin.

I looked for a good architect.

Who was very committed
to minimalism.

Half of the roof had collapsed,

And I said to the architect,

"Why not inhabit the ruin?
Not reconstruct it, but inhabit it?"

He asked,
"With the collapsed roof?"

I said, "Yes."

We're in a courtyard,

but it is not
a typical Castillian courtyard.

It's actually kind of a mix.

It has the feel
of a Japanese courtyard,

Because I've been to Japan
many times.

This is the heart
of the living space.

This is the living area,
the lounge.

There's the non-kitchen...
because I've never needed to cook.

I've always traveled,

So I didn't want a kitchen.

Upstairs, there is a bedroom with a bed...

And you can work there, too.

And this strange thing...

Is the shower.

The water pours down on you...

like a waterfall.

There's a holographic glass,

And when you have a shower,
the colors change.

I'm going to show you

the most amusing part of the shower:

Where closet is.

It's here.

I love the wall of glass here
and the silence.

But sometimes,

I've seen people
looking through the glass,

and I'm in pajamas,
which is not very comfortable.

But it's funny.

People are curious.

They want to know how we live.

When I wake up in the morning
I feel like I'm surrounded by nature,

with no boundaries or barriers.

I feel like the world is
my oyster.

Florida officials are sounding
the alarm.

Mandatory evacuations
have already begun.

Tornado watches are in place
throughout the entire state of Florida.

It's frustrating,
with how the hurricane just came through.

And part of the roof
got torn off.

The yard was an absolute mess.

The barn had a big tree fall on it,

Which pretty much knocked out
an entire end of it.

That was pretty large.
I was using that for storage.

The hurricane set me back
a good chunk of dough,

As well as a lot of time.
It has been horribly stressful.

I mean, just the clean-up
was insane.

We had not intended
to spend a month cleaning the yard.

Came out of that door there and I was
just like, "Wow."

I mean, trees everywhere.
We had a huge tree right here,

And you can hardly see the ground.
It was just covered in branches.

The trunk it right here.

The actual bridge
dropped about three inches.

There's some crack in the foundation
where it took the weight.

Getting this place
actually creating a revenue stream,

and making money is absolutely vital.

Every month goes by
where it's not open,

You know, that's money that's lost,
that could be going back into the house.

When you're wasting resources
on something that's beyond your control,

that you did not expect,
did not budget for it.

It hurts.
I mean, there's a lot of sting to that.

The worry is that my vision for
the house has been compromised.

For instance,
we had to resort to Ikea curtains,

As a temporary fix.

You know, you gotta save money somewhere.

It looks like
a 5th grader's bad art project.

Our attempt is going to be trying
to make IKEA curtains

have more of an antiquated feel.

Not convinced.

I feel like I'm going
to strangle you.

So here's my suggestion:
It needs to be tied back.

That's nice, Krislin. I like that.

Sometimes you just have to let
Krislin work her magic,

and it will turn out...

- sometimes.
- Sometimes.

The reality is,

We have about a month
to really get everything done...

And not anywhere close
to being done.

The work is insane and it's
definitely not for the faint of heart.

It's just so much work.

As far as like restoring
a historic house goes,

this is something
I would not recommend to anybody.

It's overwhelming.

It's incredibly difficult,

and it will test your relationship
with everyone around you.

I just wanted your opinion
before I continue.

I don't dislike this.
It's very different.

It's different, but I think it's gonna
look great after you put the curtains up

and it's all cleaned up.

I think it'll look pretty cool.

It looks hodge-podge.

I'm not sure.

You said this was your favorite room!
It was, but not with this window frame.

Some people just are never happy
with anything.

One of my greatest fears
is getting this deadlock.

You see people that buy houses
and do restoration projects,

And they make it a quarter the way,
half of the way,

And then they flatline.

You know,
they either run out of resources...

They run out of the will to keep working.

You want me to go backwards?
Would that be easier?

Obviously taking a place like this
is a huge risk,

and it's a gamble, and it's one I took.

This is this southern part
of Istanbul.

We're not in the middle
of nowhere...

...but we're not
in the heart of the city either.

I didn't want a shouty place,

I didn't want a show-off place.

It is totally unassuming.

I mean, you would never know
there was such a place here.

When I enter this door,
it's pure joy for me.

Here we are at my place.

People usually put their cars
in underground garages,

But in my case, it's the opposite.

Every man has an inner child.

This is like your toy room, just bigger.

So this is the lounge area
of the man cave.

Where we sit down
and chill with my friends.

And when I sit here
in the middle of the sitting area,

seeing all my cars lined up,
super clean, under nice light,

Is just the biggest
satisfaction ever.

There's my old engine
turned into a coffee table.

I blew this one three years ago in a race,

As you can see in the hole,
a piston came out of there.

Very good place for it,
because when I sit here,

I look at all my cars.

The idea for the place
came like two or three years ago.

I was always speculating
that one day I will do this.

Then, my wife gave me
the most beautiful news.

And said that we're having a baby.

So that was a kickstart.

I said, "Well, it's now or never."

When I saw this place at the beginning...

...it was kind of a warehouse.

You know, the floors
were very dirty...

And he made it
like a magical place.

I was very happy,

because we were not going to worry
about where to park our cars.

It took us 45 days, start to finish.

I like him spend his time here,
because, you know...

he relax here.

It's like a man cave.

If if I didn't have this obsession
or love or passion for cars,

I might have had a fancier house
in a fancier neighborhood,

but would I be just as this much happy?

I doubt it.

I would be living
someone else's perfect life, not mine.

The last few weeks
have been pretty stressful for us.

There's been a lot
that's going on.

It's just a stressful project
to begin with,

When you have this huge house
with so many rooms.

We still got
a long way to go, but...

We're at a good place right now.

Welcome to the Wonder House.

This is the parlor.

It's the first room
you walk into in the house,

So obviously we really want to have
a big impact.

There a lot of things
to kind of catch your gaze,

And as you look around,
you're like, "Wow, what is that?"

We actually call this
the west sunroom.

This is a 19th century
French hunting cabinet.

I use it for my oddities.

I got a black widow spider.

I have a gaboon viper...

Some scrimshaw whale teeth.

This room is my study.

It is my favorite room
in the house.

My favorite pieces are
in this room.

Drew really likes Griffins,
so the entire room is Griffins.

It is covered in Griffins dragons.
I like those things.

This is the dining room.

This is actually one
of the first rooms we truly finished.

However, we had a couple setbacks
where we had to redo the floor twice.

I think this room
came together really well.

Finally got curtains up,
which I'm very excited about.

However from Ikea,
they've actually grown on Drew,

is what he told me.

They have grown on me. I will say that.

Open the doors today,
there's obviously pressure to perform.

Especially 'cause we do plan on
charging for tours through the house,

And hopefully that'll raise money
that will keep the restoration going.

Hopefully they'll like it.
If not... They better like it.

Wow, these panels.

They're different now.

Yeah. That chandelier.

Oh, yes.

There's something creepy
in this room though,

- but I like it.
- It's the bugs.

Oh my Gosh.

It's neat house,

and the way they have it decorated
is just fascinating to me.

- Yeah, look at this one.
- That one's really nice.

It felt like I was stepping into
another world.

I was really taken aback
by it. I liked it. It was cool.

Having people come in
and see it for the first time

and having traveled
a great distance to do so

and then really loving it
and be super enthusiastic about it.

I mean, t's a great feeling.

It's certainly reinforces my belief
that there is interest in the house.

It just super magical
and different looking.

I think people really like that
about the Wonder House.

Just having got the house back
to a state

where I'm not worried about it getting
demolished anymore is,

I think,
a pretty big reward right there.
