Seeing the house from the outside,

you think, "Just a regular old family
in a regular old neighborhood,"

but what you'll find upstairs in my attic

will chill you to the bone.

I've spent 25 years building
Britain's most extraordinary home.

Man, it's getting kind of crazy.

I'm worried now,
and I'm feeling anxious all the time.

I thought that I'd be able to do
a lot of the work myself.

It was probably naive optimism.

I'm Ojas, I'm 42 years old,
and I live in Austin, Texas.

I have a beautiful condo

in a beautiful neighborhood
just south of downtown.

It's something out of my dreams.

Earlier this year, I decided to leave
my old lifestyle behind

and move into a new lifestyle

surrounded by the things that I love
and are passionate about.

Cars are more than just a hobby,
I feel like.

To me, cars are... they're freedom.

They can be creative expressions.

I'm going to live inside my auto shop

inside of a shipping container.

I'm gonna put my shipping container
on four columns.

I'm gonna cut out one side,

which is gonna be a floor-to-ceiling window. Inside
of my shipping container is gonna be my living space,

including a bedroom,
bathroom, and kitchen.

Whoever said that your house can't be
what your passion is, right?

Why can't I be surrounded by
what I'm passionate about all the time?

I'm getting body panels, doors,

wheels, and making furniture out of it.

I'm going to be surrounded by my cars,

automobile-inspired art and furniture,

and my total budget's $15,000.

Ojas, he doesn't care
what other people think.

What he's giving up
is a comfortable lifestyle.

He's trying something new.

Everyone's gonna think I'm crazy,
but I can make this a really badass place.

It's a blank slate right now.

I want to intentionally have
a small space for myself.

I want to be surrounded by cars,
I want to be surrounded by the lift,

the machinery, tools, things like that,

so I don't want to consume a lot of space.

- Ready?
- All right, let's do this.

Easy there.

I'm gonna make four chairs
out of four oil barrels

by cutting them up

with a reciprocating saw
and painting them.

It's weird, I'm 42 years old,

I'm discovering things about myself
at this stage in my life.

There's creativity in all of us,
and that's a big part of who I am.

Let's see what happens if I try to go...

I want this place to look beautiful.

I want care and thought to go into
the construction and the design.

This has a long way to go before it looks
like what I imagined in my head, right?

I think that's probably
all I can do today, it seems like.

I'm...

I'm a... a little bit...

I'm kind of having that anxiety
overwhelmed feeling

to be perfectly honest, right?

Oh, my goodness, I have a...

I have a long ways to go,
and I'm gonna need a lot of help.

Growing up in London,
I dreamed of moving out to the country,

buying a big house...

really living that stately home life.

The house I could afford
was the most ordinary

three-bedroom semi-detached
ex-council house in Essex.

From the outside,
there's not really much to tell it apart

from any of the other houses
in the street.

I've visited
27 different countries

and brought back over 2000 objects...

and created the house of my dreams.

I've spent 25 years building
Britain's most extraordinary home.

It contains 13 rooms

set in different times and places.

A historical world

set inside this ordinary house.

Talliston is like a living novel.

Each room is its own characters,

it has its own look and feel,

and then you turn the page
and you step into another chapter.

Okay. Well, welcome to my world.

This is the living room.

This is 1887, Victorian,

but it's set inside a Welsh tower,

and it is December leading up
to the few days before Christmas.

What I wanted to feel

is warmth, is sharing wine with friends,

and all of those things that we do
over that sort of winter period.

So this would be the chapel area
of the tower,

and our dining area.

When I first moved in, this room
was very square, very magnolia,

and had a very somber 70s carpet.

And so to create the tower,

we've put stone walls
within the walls of the house,

and then created
this beautiful curved ceiling

and the cobbled walls.

So when I started planning the kitchen,

I was going to have something French,
possibly from Canada,

but then when I hit on New Orleans,
everything snapped together.

The whole transformation here
took about two and a half years.

All of this was sourced from New Orleans,

and all brought back into the kitchen.

So these are the original stairs...

but now reimagined as a stone staircase

from a Medici house in Italy.

This is the biggest transformation,

and it started out as a white staircase
with a red carpet.

That's all it was.

And now it is this lovely hall of mirrors.

And here we have the master bedroom.

The house is about all feeling,

so it has to include something

that makes you feel a little bit on edge,
or a little bit scared.

Finding these objects
was all about taking weekend trips

to antique places, reclamation yards.

All of those years
looking for the right piece.

As I expanded, I set some rules.

It was going to be just funded
out of my salary.

I wanted to do this on my own.

And then, I had to go to my dad

to ask him DIY advice,

my mom to make curtains,

and slowly,
over the course of the project,

138 people have been involved.

Theresa's stayed at the house

and been a part of that journey
to build the house.

I love plumping up the cushions
and making everything spick and span.

It's like a dream,
but it's a ready-made dream.

It's like I don't have to actually make
that dream a reality, it's there.

For people who like
magnolia walls and straight lines,

you couldn't live here.

It would only suit
a certain kind of people.

I absolutely fell in love with it.

It's the most magical place
I've ever been to.

Since completing the project,

I had a really scary thought
that if anything happens to me...

the house will be sold,
people will move in,

and they will just dismantle this house
and everything in it.

I have a dream of living in some
grand hotel for the rest of my years.

And so I've made a decision
to give Talliston away for nothing,

because it's been a wonderful place
for me to live,

and now it's time to hand the house over

to, hopefully, people who would love
it and would care for it as much as I do.

So you know you've stayed here before

and you've house-sat for us
and everything?

And you really enjoy being
at Talliston.

Well, we've brought you
here today to say...

would you like... to own Talliston?

It needs to be passing the house on

from somebody who loves it
to somebody else that loves it.

And for them, in their time, to pass it on
to somebody else that loves it.

I think I need to sit down.

I'm... I feel like you've proposed to me.

Well, I sort of have.

I sort of have, haven't I?

Oh, my God, John.

I don't think I've ever felt
quite so honored in my life.

I just feel like I won the biggest
competition in the world,

and I don't remember entering it.

I'll always have Talliston...

as that place that I created

and lived in and enjoyed,

and hopefully I can come back
and visit every now and again.

Today's a big day.

We're getting the shipping container
delivered, which is gonna be my home.

It's actually the first time
that I'm gonna lay eyes on it.

It's hard to believe
this is happening right now.

In the last few days,
things got very real.

Tenants are moving in my condo.

I really don't have
a permanent place to live,

so it's time to start working
on the container.

Here it is.

The plan at the moment is to do
as much of this as possible myself.

So that includes electrical,

that includes the plumbing,
that includes installing windows.

That's a whole bunch of skills
that I need to learn really quickly.

Where it is,
it's not in a good spot.

Okay, I think that looks pretty good.

Okay, so now, I want to
very, very carefully go really...

We were supposed to go slow.

How about that?

Okay, I feel like that's pretty good.

Today is the start of the days
where I'm gonna be out here,

like, nearly all day.

Probably sleeping out here a few nights
a week working on stuff,

and just really immersing myself
in the project.

After the shipping container
was delivered, I tried to get started.

I did a few things,

but really not a whole lot
was getting done.

Stuff was just not happening
for a few weeks.

That kind of builds up over time. I was...

I was starting to have doubts,
resentments.

I think going into this project,

I thought that I'd be able to do
a lot of the work myself.

It was probably naive optimism.

I definitely bit off
way more than I could chew.

The biggest thing that's changed
was running across David.

David's built several container projects
around town

exactly like what I'm trying to do,

and he's got all the skills that I need.

He also comes from a kind of
artisan blacksmith background,

so he brings a lot of that artistic sense
to the project as well.

The amount of work that needs to be done
is substantial.

And so it's gonna be a little bit
of a challenge.

Today besides David,
I've got my buddy Ramon helping me out.

He's a big, strong guy, so we're gonna
use him to get stuff done today.

We're cutting out the opening
for the sliding doors,

and the idea is to cut out either side

along the top, along the bottom.

The very last bit we have left is there.

This is gonna change the feel
of the space,

and it's gonna be more representative
of the final product.

This is the first time
that we're gonna see the doors

on the shipping container.

Okay. Yeah, you guys got it.

This looks really good.

I'm digging it.

I'm just taking a moment
to take in my container,

my new home.

A key part of this design has always been

to have the shipping container in the air
in some form or fashion.

That's absolutely critical,

because we need floor space for my cars
and for the other vehicles.

One thing that I have yet to figure out

is how we're going to lift
the shipping container in the air.

It needs to be at least
eight, ten feet in the air.

I have no idea how that's gonna work.

Overall, the project
is about ten weeks behind.

I have a temporary living situation
right now, which is workable,

but I've really got to get this done
in the next four weeks.

I've lived outside of Raleigh
all my life,

and have been in law enforcement
for approximately five years.

Being a police officer,

unfortunately, you see the rougher side
of different types of people's situations.

My home is my sanctuary where
I can get away from the real world,

and a place to be able to relax
and escape it all.

Seeing the house
from the outside, you think,

"Just a regular old family
in a regular old neighborhood."

You walk in and it's...

bam!

I have one of the largest privately owned

horror prop collections in the world.

I'm a huge movie lover.

Horror movies were my passion
when I was younger.

And as time went on,
things just blew up.

I would put the value at
a million dollars plus.

Wanna play?

I was probably 18 years old
when I first got my first prop.

Really got dedicated into it
when I was about 25,

and it just got bigger
and bigger and bigger...

until you see what I've got today.

I've got some pieces for $500,

and then some that range
all the way up to $150,000.

Over here we have Leatherface.

It's a complete costume and mask.

This film here, Gremlins 2.

I have a Gremlin Mogwai.

This room here...

Edward Scissorhands' hands.

A very iconic piece.

As far as the most valuable item,
I would probably say

Jack Skellington's house
from Nightmare Before Christmas.

It's probably one of the most valuable
that I've ever obtained.

Wesley and I met four years ago.

We got married in May of 2016.

The first time I visited this house,

I was shocked.

You know, shock and awe.

There was a lot to see,
a lot to take in,

and I was just here to get to know him...

but I got to know so much more.

I'm afraid when I clean sometimes
that something's gonna break.

This stuff's a lot of money,
and I don't want to break it.

I don't like coming in here
by myself,

especially when Wesley's
on night shift working.

No.

It's just scary.

There are moments when you're like,
"Okay, could she really come to life...

and just, you know...

...do that crazy, like,

head-flip thing that she does
in the movie?"

But obviously, that's not
gonna happen. It's all just... fake.

It's just fake.

I've probably spent about 50,000

creating and renovating the four rooms.

The girders are just, like, regular wood,

and we actually got, like,
some little wooden half circles,

and we glued them to it.

We wanted it to appear like it was welded.

So to do that,
we just took a hot glue gun,

and we just kept, like, putting hot glue
on top of hot glue on top of hot glue,

and then when we painted it,
it appeared like it was a weld.

We also made, like,
the different stalactites and stalagmites

to make it appear
that it was the interiors of a cave.

And they're actually magnetized
to the ceiling.

It's really, really surreal,
as time goes,

to see the stuff kind of, like,
materialize into the real thing.

It's been fabricated, it's been made,

and it's right here in front of me,
and it's really happened.

The dedication will always be there.

I'll always be looking for more stuff
to add to the collection.

The last few weeks have been

unlike any weeks in my life.

You know, some days it's been 6 a.m.,

actually working until 2 a.m.

I think we took one day off in three weeks
and got a late start one morning.

One big challenge we had is finding
a way to lift the container off the floor.

Several weeks ago,
I didn't know how that was going to work.

David and I sat down and we came up with a
metal structure that we fabricated ourselves.

So it was raw high beams and
square tubing and a lot of welding.

We probably spent maybe seven days

building that metal structure
and making sure that it's solid.

We had a plan of how we're going to lift
the container off the ground,

orient the Skylift into place.

Driving the forklift was initially
a very terrifying feeling.

I've actually never used a piece
of heavy machinery before.

David's a wonderful teacher,
and he showed me the controls.

It's been a really great experience.
Nobody's been arguing.

Everybody's just kind of been
doing their thing,

and that's the most important thing, is the
cooperation. Once the container is on the structure,

the next thing to do is actually
build the stairs and build a railing.

We ran this really cool aircraft cable
along the railings

to make sure people don't fall off.

Finishing out the bathroom,
putting down tile flooring,

building cabinets, building the kitchen,

putting in shelves,
making the inside nice and livable...

This project started with the oil cans.

The idea was to make
a couple seats out of these.

I have this lovely leather cushion,

so, what I'm gonna do is...

plop it right on here,
and you can see it fits...

Wow, it fits just fine.

And here we go.

This is really nice. I like this cushion.

It's gonna be a crazy next few hours.

I've called all hands on deck.

Everyone's out here
to make this thing happen.

A lot of my friends have came in
to help me with various tasks.

I'm feeling a bit exhausted, actually.

I think just trying to get
everything organized,

like, I think I feel
a little bit of everything.

It's been pretty amazing to watch it
come from basically storage unit

to a man cave within a man cave.

We got the cars in here.

They've been detailed.

We have the oil drums, the seating.

All our mess out of here.

We're getting the place looking beautiful.

We're working to the last minute,
but finally everything is put together.

It's gonna take me a while to come down
from the mode that I've been working in

for the last several months
and actually take a breath and relax.

I'm just gonna take a moment
to enjoy the space

by myself quietly
before we get the party started.

The container
is just absolutely beautiful.

It's totally transformed the space.

I'm very much looking forward
to moving in.

The place looks so inviting right now,

I kind of just want to go upstairs
and relax and call it home.

This is the first time that
I've been inside the container,

you know, in finished form.

The lighting looks great,
everything's clean.

It's very much an expression of myself.

I couldn't have imagined
for a better outcome.

I think my budget,
initially I was looking at $15,000,

and I think at some point
along the way, I realized

that, hey, that's a little bit ambitious,

and to be perfectly honest,
I haven't looked at the numbers yet.

I think a lot of it is on credit cards
at this point.

I probably went a little bit overboard
in the bathroom

just to make it look really nice,

and did a, you know,
pretty mad shower fixture.

I think I'm probably looking at
21, $22,000,

so it's a bit above the budget,

but it's kind of worked out better than
I could have imagined at the same time.

It's a warehouse,
but it looks like a museum.

I'm able to display
pieces of automotive art,

pieces of art that you can drive,

wander around and appreciate the lines,

appreciate the angles.

It's so cool.

I think folks should be
rolling in right now.

I think I hear them
coming down the street.

I mean, this is amazing.

This is gonna be a great place to live.

I'm super jealous.

Oh, my gosh.

You did such a good job.

One of my favorite pieces
is just, like, the living space,

the kitchen/living space.

I could see myself just looking out
that glass window.

I know there's not a view,
you see a lot of sheet metal,

but it's... it feels homey.

It's usually you have a big house
with a small garage,

and I think now he has a big garage
with a small home.

And so it's reversed.
It's really cool, you know.

I think it's beautiful.

It's really amazing that you can take
something that is a functional device

and turn it into something that's...
it's beautiful and in a living space.
