Seeing the house
from the outside,

you think just a regular
house in a regular old neighborhood,

and then you walk in,
and it's... bam.

I really wasn't expecting that.

I think I definitely bit off
way more than I could chew.

It's even better
than anyone could imagine.

All of our savings are going into
it. There's nothing else left to give.

We've been living together
in London for four years.

We rent on the river here...

right next to Central London.

We're in one of the biggest cities
in the world.

Two-bed around here
would be about 800,000.

There's no way we would be
in this area if it wasn't for the boat.

In three month's time,
this'll be our home.

1902 she was made.

For about 60 years, she used to carry oil
all round the Netherlands.

She is home, but she's a work in progress.

Mind your step there.

At the moment,
it's obviously a building site.

It's hard to imagine
what it's gonna be like.

I want the wow factor,

but I also want it to feel like
it represents me and Joel.

We don't something
out of a magazine,

we want something
that's kind of true to ourselves.

The plan is to raise up
a central section with glass,

which will allow plenty of light
to flood into the open-plan space.

We'll be creating
hidden storage units

and a bespoke kitchen
with concrete countertops.

We're going to panel
the entire interior with wood

to give the boat
a light Scandinavian feel.

I think we're going for something
that is quite bold,

even though it's paired back
and it's simple.

So, potentially,
there's a lot to go wrong.

We moved aboard a couple of years
ago, and the place was in a state.

We'd wake up in the morning
with this icicle

dripping water onto your face

from the window
that we had above our heads.

We were living in squalor.

I always used to think,
"What are we doing here?"

But then we saw
the potential of it.

This is something that we can shape
into our own home.

Every single process that's involved
in restoring a boat, we've had to do.

It's all been our work.

Yeah, these bare hands.

We've stripped everything back,

got it back to the steel...

took all of the rust off,

and then built it back up,

so this boat has had a lot of TLC
out of Joel and me.

Part of the problem
when we lived here before

is there was no insulation.

So, what we've got here
is spray foam insulation.

So it means that this boat
is not gonna be cold.

We're gonna have
crisp plywood cabinets,

all very sleek and elegant,
then with a thick concrete countertop,

about three inches deep.

So now we're going into
the living room.

We're gonna have a double-height ceiling

- so Rosie can do her yoga.
- Yoga.

This area here is going up 60 centimeters.

We're gonna have a glass skybox,

and it'll mean that we've got
loads of light.

Step into the toilet, we'll have our sink,

and once the light box is installed,

you're gonna have a shower straight
into the sky. It's gonna be amazing.

This is the way round
to the bedroom.

We're gonna have
a double bed here.

It's pretty much just gonna be
you can jump in.

Yeah. Jump straight into bed.

Furniture all has to be bespoke
in a place like this.

You can't buy off the peg
when your bedroom is round.

I actually didn't know that, so...
That's news to me.

I thought we were gonna get a proper bed.

No, we can't.

We've got about £25,000
saved at the moment,

Which we know probably
isn't gonna see us through to the end.

Money is very tight,
so there have to be a few compromises.

We've been buying old, recycled,
reclaimed stuff wherever possible.

Our flooring is from
an old school gymnasium,

so it's still got
the red tape on the floor.

That was £150.

For major bits of work,

we always try and get
as many friends on board as possible.

And we do get a lot of people
want to come.

Everyone says yes,

And then they go out
the night before.

- Yeah. 'Cause it's the weekend.
- And then it's not a "yes" anymore.

It's very Joel and Rosie.

It's a big project,
and a lot to take on...

...especially since they're
sort of young professionals,

and have a lot of work to do anyway.

I don't know anyone else
that would do it.

The only time I really
catch up with them at the moment

is when I come down to help.

Which is a really nice thing,
but they're just so tied up with it.

What we doing?

You're gonna be trimming back
some insulation

so we can fit our paneling next week.

- All right.

So we're staying at Joel's dad's house
at the moment,

which has actually been sold.

Where we're living now
disappears in three month's time.

So unless we're gonna be sleeping
at the office,

we need to get this done.
Three months is not long.

- It's not long.
- Yeah.

- There's a lot to do.
- There is.

There is a lot to do.

If I was ever gonna worry
about this project,

it's about worrying about getting
everything we've got to do done.

My name is Stewart McVicar,
and I live in Lake in the Hills, Illinois.

My house is a typical
suburban home.

If you walked past it, you would
never know what was on the inside.

I have a 2300 square feet Chicago Cubs
clubhouse right in my basement.

We got the bar area,
we got the theater area,

we got the arcade room,
and we got the center meeting room.

I named this place
Club 400 because,

first of all,
when you go on Wrigley Field,

one of the first places you go to
to get your picture taken...

...is the big 400 sign
in center field.

I'd say there was over, like,
500 baseballs,

over a hundred bats,
over 50 jerseys down here.

All signed.

In fact, I have so many baseballs,
I don't have anywhere to display 'em.

I don't know about you, but I'm a guy,
and I definitely want a urinal.

You won't get bored, 'cause we put a TV
right above the urinal.

The last thing I want to do,

is someone to go to the bathroom
and they miss the big play.

From time to time,
people reach out and say,

"Hey, Stu,
I got this really cool Cubs piece."

And here is an organ used
for over 13 years at Wrigley Field.

So, what we have here is a life-sized
Anthony Rizzo bobblehead.

This is one of one,
so you can't find this anywhere.

People around here
are really into baseball,

but there's no one
more into baseball than me.

This is easily the number one Cubs cave
in the world.

Wrigley Field is
a special place, you know.

Whenever I go to Wrigley Field,
I just pour myself a beer.

I leave all my life's problems outside.

Being that I couldn't go
to Wrigley Field every single day,

I wanted to build a place
where I could walk down the stairs

and forget about life,

and enjoy Cubs baseball
with my friends and family.

Well, I don't think anybody
can compare to Stu

when it comes to just
over-the-top Cubs fan.

I couldn't date any other baseball fan,
it had to be a Cubs fan, you know,

so I figured if I kept on going,

I'd eventually find
the love of my life at Wrigley Field.

Right away, I could sense about Stu

that he was just like
this happy, fun-loving guy,

and I'm like,
"He looks cute in a Cub hat."

I basically brought in
some topnotch contractors.

So I tried to find the best guys
to do it,

and of course
they had to be Cub fans.

- Remember this photo?
- Yeah.

- So this was the concept photo, remember?
- I sold you with that.

There was a lot of struggles
along the way.

I mean, if it wasn't done right
the first time, we redid it.

So it was frustrating
when we had to redo stuff,

but I knew at the end of the day
that the result would be better.

The cost of the man cave
is probably enough

to purchase another house
of some sort.

This corner over here, just in general,

is like over $30,000 worth
of Cubs memorabilia.

Honestly, I'm not even sure
Stu knows an exact number.

I don't know how she put up with it,
but she did.

I guess that's what happens
when you marry a Cubs fan.

I want the Cubs cave

to become much more
than a place just to watch sports.

I want to use it for fundraisers
and raise money for charity.

- You need to get $800 for this one, so...
- Okay.

Big Lee! What's up, buddy?

Usually when we have
our fundraising events,

we have a Cubs player that comes.

And he comes down here,
and he'll take pictures with the fans...

...sign autographs.

- Can I get a hug?
- This is Mom.

We turn it into a big festival basically.

Welcome to Club 400! I hope you guys
have a great night tonight, all right?

You wouldn't know driving up

that it's gonna be awesome like this.

You think, "Oh, somebody's basement?"

But this is like walking
into a club downtown Chicago.

It's better than any sports bar
I've ever been to in my life.

This is a fan's ultimate dream come true.

- Yes.
- Absolutely.

I'm very proud of Stu

and what he has ended up doing
with the man cave.

When it turned into
raising money for charity,

it took on this whole new meaning,

so despite the things that annoy me,
I am very proud of Stu.

A lot has changed
since you were last here.

Been a bit of a slog,
just working day and night.

The workload's
definitely intensified recently.

When you've got a really busy day
on the boat,

you're getting up super early.

This is a really intense period.

But as we stand, we've got walls,
we've got floors,

we've got cables, we've got pipes,

we've got lights,
we've got switches.

One of the biggest things down here
is the floor's finished,

And we've got cladding up
both sides.

We've also got the ply on the walls,
which is great.

Obviously, the biggest change here
is the fact that we've got our skybox now.

You can swing a cat in here.

And... And obviously,
in the daytime, we've got so much light.

We don't even switch the lights on.

This will be our bathroom.

I'd say, you know,
compared to the living room,

this has got a bit further to go.

We need to get the strip flooring
coming round here.

But we do have our walls up.

We're gonna be doing a bit of tiling here.

This is our lovely shower.

I found a copper handmade shower
online for £260.

Showed it Joel, and he just said,

"There's no way that we're paying that.
We can do it ourselves."

This is the shower.

Obviously, bit of a floppy
work in progress at the moment.

It's just really basic plumbing parts,
so we've got some copper pipe,

and these are gate valves,
these lovely red things.

It's really simple stuff.

So out of the bathroom
and into the cabin.

We've been doing
a lot of paneling work.

Obviously, you can see the cables
dangling where we're gonna have lights.

And we've got hidden storage
underneath the bed,

so if you open this up...
This'll be on gas struts,

but that'll be lots of storage.

It's a whole room...
There's my screwdriver.

We're project managing this,
keeping down full-time jobs,

then having to feed ourselves,
sleep, you know, simple things,

but it does all pile up.

The biggest change
that's coming up really soon

is that we are about to make
concrete countertops for our kitchen.

That's gonna be at least
a couple of days' work

in the workshop
with Joel's dad, Arthur.

My dad's an artist, woodworker,
carpenter-type bloke.

He's really, really, amazingly talented
at what he does,

so we're pretty lucky to have him
to give us a hand.

- Morning, Arthur.
- Hiya. How's it going?

This is a mold
for a single countertop unit.

We're going to pour concrete in,

and hopefully, it doesn't leak
and it doesn't go wrong.

You better do the honors
with the first bucket.

Oh, yeah.

When it goes wrong, it's all my fault.

The first layer
of concrete is in,

so, what we've got to do...

...is use this shaker

to shake a lot of the air bubbles
out of the concrete.

You put the concrete in the mold,

and then you've just got to wait
for it to go off,

and that can take days upon weeks.

So it's really just
a waiting game.

We've lost this entire year,
you know,

friends, family, sleep, energy.

There is still a long way to go.

There's a lot to do.

The place still looks
like a building site.

I'll do what I can to help.

Money is pretty much dried up
at this point.

We're definitely
penny-pinching now.

We're at the bottom
of our savings,

and we are kind of waiting
for the next paycheck for a lot of stuff.

We do still have
quite a long way to go.

Obviously, there's a lot
of details yet to be finished,

and the details take
a lot of time.

But we've come this far.
We just have to keep pushing.

I'm Eli, I'm 62 years old.

I retired a couple of years ago.

It was always a dream of mine
since I was a little kid,

and as I grew and went
from one home to the other,

I finally was able to make that dream come true.
My dream was to have a huge aquarium in my house,

so I decided to build
my own reef at home.

My house, it's very unique.

When I'm diving, I'm like...
It's another world for me.

It's quiet,
and it's so nice, colorful.

When you build a tank like that,

you have to dive into it.

You have to do some cleaning,
some maintenance.

So diving is for fun,
but it's also to maintain it.

It's biggest of its kind in Israel,

and one of three biggest
in the world.

Tank is 37,000 liters.

It's huge for a house.

I have about 30 species of fish.

More less the same number
of different corals.

It takes a lot of know-how and care.

Everything is done through my phone.

That's temperature, the pH...

You see, now food is off.

I decided they ate too much for today.

Financially, it is expensive.

Electricity bills are huge,
water bills are huge as well.

Acoustic door, very heavy.

I use just artificial salt

to actually make salt water.

The water here, it's filled with algae,

and algae actually remove
all the dirt from the water.

Once the water is clean,

they will go into those pumps, and the
pumps will pump it back to the aquarium.

The aquarium was planned first
and the house around it,

to be able to... You know,
to sleep and eat and watch the fish.

And I can stay like that for hours.

My family think I'm crazy
for a long time.

Every time I call and ask where Dad is,
the answer is, "Dad is in the aquarium."

He has only two children,
but in reality he has 157 kids.

The only one that I actually named
is that very big fish over there.

I called him Pig...

because he eats like a pig.

Everyone here knows this is the Pig.

We can't both go abroad together
at the same time.

Someone needs to stay
and look after the aquarium.

When he flies,
I'm the babysitter of the aquarium.

I can watch it from anywhere
in the world,

and can wake up my son
in the middle of the night

and tell him, "Look, the temperature
is not correct. Go fix it."

And things like that happen.

When you are retired,

and you have something
that fills your life,

that's great... and it's a lot of fun.

We've been working about 90 hours
a week for the last 11 months.

It's been really draining.

Every penny that we've earned
has gone into this project.

Outside, nothing has changed,

but inside,
it's a total transformation.

So this is our beautiful kitchen.

I'm really impressed with
what Rosie's done with the countertops.

I would've gone for something
a bit more traditional, probably wood...

...but I think that's where, between us,
we make a nice balance.

We've got the concrete counters,

we've got all of Joel's handiwork
with the copper.

So a bit of copper work,
like the taps that we've got there,

came in less than £20.

And we've even utilized the space
under the stairs for storage.

So this is the living room.

We've opened it up,
we've got this double-height space now.

It's very flexible.

The shape of the hull is curved,
and we never wanted to hide that away.

We really wanted to make
a feature of it,

so we used thin strips
to really accentuate the curve.

We've got these massive
storage containers.

Also double up as bench seats

so that we can have up to, you know,
15 people round for dinner.

I love the finished effect
of the floor.

It's one of my favorite things
in the boat.

Because it was reclaimed,

it was probably the biggest saving
that we've had on the entire boat,

and it was definitely worth
all of those hours.

Another multi-functional feature
that we've got is our coffee table,

which is a pair of trestles.

This was the table that we used
to cut all the wood on,

and we thought it was so beautiful,

we had to incorporate it
into the space in some way.

So this is our dining table.

This kind of lower, more cozy area,

we really wanted to make it soft
and warm and homely.

It's gonna be lovely to sit on our sofa and
get a fire going during the winter nights.

I think these are one of
the most beautiful features

that we've got on the boat.

My dad helped us make an oak veneer

with oak trims that tie it in really nicely.
We've gone for traditional bulkhead-style lights,

which really give that boat feel,

but also, the wirelessly-controlled
corner-mounted LEDs.

And just with a touch of a button,
you can have exactly what you want.

It was really, really dark
when we lived here before.

We always knew because of that

we wanted to cut a hole in
and bring the light in.

So this is something
that we've planned all along.

Not only does it fill
this space with light,

it also gives us a double-height area

where I don't have to be worried
about knocking my head.

We've got a nice, simple bathroom.

We've tried to make
the absolute most of the space.

Really like the effect
we've got with the shower.

And by putting the shower
in the skylight,

it means that I've got plenty headroom
to be able to stand up.

So we've got more copper here
with our rails for clothes.

And then this is the bed.

We've got some hidden storage
here as well.

It's a really open, easily accessible,
breathable space.

Hopefully, our friends and family
will understand that this is the reason

they haven't seen us in a year.

Coming down those stairs really was a shock to see how
much they've done and how much they've made it their own.

Outside, it just looks like it's gonna be
still quite rough and, like, industrial,

but inside, yeah, they've got a real theme.

I think all the copper and plants
and everything make it look really slick.
