Choraku-ji Temple, Kyoto.

Mentioned in the Tale of the
Heike as being in the Ohara area.

Where Kenreimon-in, daughter of Taira
Kiyomori and mother of Emperor Antoku,

was embraced and took the

tonsure to become a Nun from
Choraku-ji Priest Insei-shonin.

She entered Choraku-ji at the age of 29
and died here at 58 or 59 years of age.

This is the Memorial Stupa
dedicated to Kenreimon'in.

A stupa is structure that typically
contained the remains of

Buddhist monks or nuns, and
used as a place of meditation.

In memory of her son Emperor
Antoku who died at the age of 8,

Kenreimon'in herself made special banners

for offering to this temple

out of the clothes he was
wearing at the time of his death.

This hanging screen showing
Kenreimon'in is a precious

historic artifact because
temple's rarely had portraits.

According to the Tale of the Heike,

the surface of the portrait was
covered with an ink-like substance

in order to deceive the Genji and save the
portrait from destruction at their hands.

Kenreimon'in's passing
in Ohara provided the

closing chapter of the
Heike Monogatari.
