So output
blinking or letter boxes are used

so that we can change the aspect
ratio of our video.

We're not actually like stretching
the video or anything like that.

We're really just putting an overlay
on top of our video

to hide a little bit of the top
and bottom of our image,

or maybe even the sides, depending
on what you're trying to do here.

We're basically

just adding black bars to our image
to change the look and feel of our video.

This is something I do all the time,
and you can see that

I've actually used letter boxes in my best
John clips 2019 as well as Hey Tim.

So the way that I used to go
about letterboxing was

I would have to actually import
external pages.

So I'd have to like download
something from the internet like this,

put it over top of my timeline.

And this works,
but it is just an extra step.

So da Vinci has output blinking
or letterboxing a little bit

more figured out.

All you need to do is go up here
to timeline, head down to output blanking

and then you can choose
what aspect ratio you want.

A lot of the time
I'll be working in 2.4 right here

and that gives me a bit of a bigger
black bar on the top and bottom.

And I really like the way this looks.

It makes it feel a bit more cinematic

and it also gives me more room
to play around with my images position.

So if I move the Y position here,
I can push it even further up

because I can take it all the way up
to where that output blinking ends.

Whereas normally I'd be limited
to the bottom of the frame here,

but now I can push my image
all the way up to this area right here.

So not only does output blanking
make my image look more cinematic,

it also gives me more flexibility
to move my image around within that space.
