Another major reason we might want to do
a secondary correction on a clip

is to adjust somebody's skin.

If you were going to ask ten
different colorists

what the most important part of color
grading is, I would imagine

that some or most of them would say skin
tones.

The huge reason is
because we connect the best with people.

People are important to us
and faces and skin tones

and eyes are really important that
those look how they're supposed to look

because that's
what we look at and value a lot in life.

So if somebody's skin is off immediately
changes the tone of your image.

For instance, this middle
image has a relatively normal skin tone.

It's bright, it's relatively saturated.

We do have a little bit
of a rainbow thing here,

but that's just a stylized thing
for the picture.

But for the most part,
this looks like a normal photo.

Now, contrast
that with this photo on the left

where her skin is very desaturated.

This looks like it's a overcast day.

It's almost kind of sad. It's
a little bit dramatic.

And a lot of this is
just because her skin is so desaturated

on the

right here, we can immediately
tell that these colors are off.

And the reason isn't
because of her sweater,

because we had no idea what color
her sweater is or the background

or the couch or her hair.

It's all about the skin.

We have this greenish weird kind of skin
tone here, and things don't look natural.

So it's obvious
that there's some kind of color cast here.

Something is not normal.

So just the skin tones
tell a lot about the tone of an image.

So it's really important that we're intentional with where our skin tones live.
