Let's talk about color grading surfaces.

These are kind of the most rock star
fun things do color grading.

For some of them, it kind of
feels like you're driving a spaceship.

Let's take a look at what a color surface
is and kind of the ideas behind it.

So quick Google search will show you
all of these things with these kind

of track balls on a great big panel.

Now we're going to get into specifically
what all these different kind of controls

do when we jump into more
of the interface of resolve.

But you can see

there are a whole bunch of different
options all the way from a little tiny guy

like this to a giant,
you know, spaceship control panel.

And these range from, you know, two
or $300 all the way up to $30,000.

But here's the good news.

You don't need one of these, especially
if you're just getting into color.

This isn't something that's essential
where this is going to be really helpful

if you decide
you want to work in the color page a lot.

This will give you kind of more tactile
controls to where you can kind of build up

some muscle memory and work a lot faster
than you normally could with a mouse.

During this training, I'm

going to be using a relatively affordable
black magic micro panel.

Being somebody who works with the color
page a lot.

I find this really helpful.

Again, it depends on how often

you're in the color page, whether you want
to invest in something like this or not.

So here's the panel.

We're going to get into this
a little bit more when it comes to

how the color page
is laid out and resolved.

But the idea is
that there are multiple different controls

that I can change with
either hand at any given time

and with a simple turn of a knob,
I can make an image brighter or darker.

I can change its color cast,

I can boost or lower the saturation,
I can move in between shots.

And it's a very handy, very fast
way to do color grading inside of resolve.

I'm one of those people
that really like fancy toys.

I've definitely thought about getting
a bigger color panel more than once.

And if you have a chance to play around
with them, there are a lot of fun.

Again, if you're just starting out,
I would recommend making sure

that you really like color
before you kind of drop some money.

But it's pretty hard to go wrong with
something

like the micro panel
or even the Black Magic mini panel

when it comes
to color grading and resolve.
