made a surprise decision

to lead the men

on a 2-day pig hunt.

I was like, "what?
You’re leaving?"

It was very clear-cut defined...

The boys against the
girls... out of nowhere.

Announcer: In their absence,

the women have shown
their resolve... Oh, my god!

And the men may have found

the protein they
were looking for.

[ Pigs snorting ]

They’re moving in right now.

Holy [bleep]

You can hear them.
They’re moving across.

And they seem to have
moved to my right...

within 40, 50 yards.

The pigs seem to
have left the area.

Russell: We came as a group...
Me, Fernando, and chance...

For a couple days to hunt.

My mission is to get a pig.

This morning, I mean,
we didn’t get anything,

but I’m pretty confident

these pigs are gonna
make their way back,

and when they do,
I’m gonna get one.

What’s up, brother?

What a morning, huh?

No [bleep] right?

I heard some pretty
loud noises early on...

Right there when we first left.

Yeah.

It was, like, snorting
and growling.

I was like, "that’s a pig.

That’s a pig."

This afternoon, try a
second time around.

We’re rundown, especially
now not eating the last two days.

We promised the girls
that we’d be back tomorrow.

We have a few more
hunts ahead of us,

and we’re definitely determined

because it’d be really
nice to end this challenge

with some kind of meat.

I’ll just stoke the fire.

Do you want me to start
collecting firewood, then?

Yeah, if you don’t mind.

All right.

Chance: Sometimes, you roll
the dice and it’s not your luck.

But for me, Russ is the leader.

I’m a ranger who
you give a mission,

and he’ll find a
way to complete it.

Sometimes, having a mission
is what keeps you sane.

And the shelter here
is just so much better.

Yeah, dude.

Russell: It’s been good
to get away from the girls.

Being around three
women 24 hours a day,

7 days a week...
It gets tiresome.

I don’t care if they
are naked, all right?

They could have
$20 bills duct-taped

to their whole damn bodies,

and I still would rather be
here right now than be in there.

And so I collected some bait,
and the best thing about these

is they’re so hard that
you hear them crunching.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Before you know it, it’s a
whole family sitting there,

crunching on a whole
pile of palm nuts.

I like to be a provider.

If I can come back
with a huge haul,

I will shoulder this burden

all the way back
to the campsite,

just so everybody is
provided for, as usual.

Hopefully, this afternoon
turns out to be better.

Amber: How you hunt for snakes

is you wait
patiently in the tree.

What’s that to my left?

Do you see any
eggs in this tree?

’cause I would definitely
climb some trees

for some eggs right
now, or even a snake.

The guys decided to
go on a 2-day pig hunt.

Not one time did they ask us
if we wanted to join their hunt.

We are not normal
women out here.

We do not sit here and just
boil water and get firewood

and wait for the
guys to bring home

the meat... Doesn’t
work that way.

We’re survivalists
just as good as them.

We’re kind of getting used
to the camp just being us girls.

The fish that we ate
yesterday is helping us,

but we are desperate
for protein tonight,

or else I’m gonna go downhill.

It’s been so much quieter
and so much more just peaceful

without the guys.

I know that I’m strong
and I’ve got energy...

That I can do whatever
needs to be done

for surviving the
rest of this challenge.

I’d like to take any
of those guys on.

Shannon: Ooh, caiman.

I know it’s a huge long shot,

but I would just
love to get a caiman.

To have that food in
us would be awesome.

Yeah, I just have no
idea how it’s done, though.

- I’m down.
- You’ll know. We’ll have it.

Either one of us will
have its tail and one of us

will be on its back.

I’ll be on its back
with my knee,

bracing it down
so it can’t move.

- Right.
- Grab the throat.

- And then stab it.

I think we should get
some torches set up and...

Giovanna: I have never been
on an alligator or a caiman hunt.

We know they hunt at night.

Yeah, it’s scary, and there are

a lot of hidden
dangers in there,

but we really need to be eating.

And we can just keep stuffing
dry palm in there and encendio.

I love that, you know, the
boys are doing an epic thing,

so, therefore, we shall
respond with epic in return.

It’s either a pig or a caiman.

When the guys
come home tomorrow,

we’re gonna be having that
caiman hanging right there,

outside of our
shelter, drying out.

[ Chuckles ]

Fernando: Plan
for tonight is just

to really bait this area

that we’ve kind of seen
the most activity of pig

and be in the right
spot for a great pig kill.

Russell: I made
a nice, thick blind.

I have a spot that I can see
through without being exposed.

Nothing will know I’m here.

See if I can’t get
some meat tonight.

Fernando: If a wild
boar decides to rush you,

it can do some serious damage,

and so, whenever
we take our positions

through our boar hunts,

we’re always by a
tree we can climb up.

These vines here are
what I can climb up quickly

if the pig comes
and wants to charge.

See how it goes.

Fernando: Still waiting for
some pigs to come around.

Yeah. Just got to be patient.

Mosquitos are crazy.

You get eaten alive.

I’m tired. I know my
body’s beat to hell.

Why would somebody
want to suffer

so much and go
through so much hell?

Especially, 40
days is a long time.

Your will has to be unbreakable.

More than anything, this
is... This is a mental challenge.

Chance: Just, like, the hunger,
like, plays with your mind.

It plays on your body.

The jungle will creep
into your head if you let it.

Well, no pig this go-around.

Shannon: I think this is more
dangerous than the pig hunt.

Giovanna: The entire
purpose of going at night,

even though it’s a long
shot and, obviously,

we can’t see well and
we need to use torches,

is because, you know,
caiman... they hunt at night.

They’re out at night.

And even though they
have the advantage at night,

we need to give
it our best shot.

All the dangerous stuff
comes out in the nighttime...

Electric eels, snakes.

I’d hate to stumble on a viper.

Do it.

bellies tonight with some fish.

Giovanna: So, we’re gonna
feast tonight. Thank goodness.

No caiman, but
good fish for dinner.

Russell: We got our fire going.

Trying to keep that
up and up, stay warm...

All that good stuff.

Lot of [bleep] firewood.

I know.

It’s a good pig hunting today.

Didn’t get anything,
but we promised the girls

that we’d be back
tomorrow to our group camp.

I kind of realized, you
know, the value of the group.

You know, the three of us
are out here by ourselves,

and there was more work to do.

Perhaps, they’re
feeling the same thing,

so it should be good
to get back there.

Russell: Tomorrow,
we are getting a pig.

It’s gonna be a good hunt, boys.

Fernando: Russ, here’s the
thing I was thinking about, man...

We told them two days,
and I want to honor that.

Being the three of us out here,

we’re realizing how
much the group matters.

Like, there are times that
we’d wake up from a nap

or whatever and, "hey,
here’s some fresh water, boys,"

or, "here’s the
pile of firewood."

Like, "oh [bleep]" what
do you think, chance?

- Does that sound...
- Yeah, I agree.

I think we were
doing really well.

I mean, we were
bickering and fighting,

but everybody was
contributing as a group.

So, I guess let’s do that, then.

I was wanting to
stay a little bit longer,

but ferny and chance
brought it to my attention

that we did tell the girls
that we were coming back,

so we are going back.

- So, Shannon...

Amber: How do you
feel about the guys

staying away for a
couple more days?

I feel like that
would be wonderful.

A very nice break
from the masculinity.

And just enjoy the peacefulness

Russell: It’s tough out here.

And I’ve been doing my best.

I hope my actions out
here haven’t painted me

in a negative picture to
where he’s embarrassed to say

that I’m his father.

to invest as much

if we’re gonna head

look at it... If y’all go,

We have 10 days.

I don’t want to be
going back saying, "hi,"

when we could be
getting something to eat.

Fernando: The plan with
the group was specifically,

"we’ll see you in
2 days on day 30."

I feel an incredible
obligation to stick to the plan.

When you’re a
team and it’s survival

and it’s life and death,

you can’t just throw
curve balls like that.

I’m just saying I’m staying.

That’s up to you if
you want to go or stay.

I’d rather stay with him.

I bonded with Russ pretty
closely in the beginning,

and it just grew.

Took me under his
arms, confirmed that,

have a friend now...

You have family now.

Being in the army, you
never leave a man behind.

It’s just in our oaths
and our creeds,

so I feel confident
about my decision to stay.

that chance is staying...

Yeah, it warms my heart.

That means we are a
family... we’re a tribe.

As far as I’m concerned,

that’s the highest
honor a hunter can give.

If I can get a
big kill tomorrow,

chance gets his pick of meat.

back to our other camp.

We have always
gone... The three of us.

So I am working my way
through the game trails here.

There does seem to be a
haunting feel to this place.

It’s hard not to get lost.

In the jungle, you just
kind of lose your mind.

So, I definitely got
a little disoriented.

I backtracked to where
I knew I was correct

and to find the
correct game trail.

It was a kind of a
good little exercise

in just kind of keeping calm.

Pretty easy to panic out here.

really good, Shannon.

What’s that?

We’re, like, set for
the next two days

on firewood with that stuff.

Shannon: We’ve got this really
efficient way of doing things,

and it’s nice to have
the place to ourselves.

To be honest, if
they don’t have a pig,

I’d rather them not come back.

Fernando: Oh, thank god.

Anyone see the
nearest gas station?

You three are a
sight for sore eyes.

It isn’t set in stone.

I never, in a million years,

envisioned some
kind of guy versus girls.

I mean, it sounds like they’ve
entrenched their position

on not needing the boys.

We’ll just see if it ends up
being kind of a permanent rift,

which I really hope it isn’t.

Chance: We were hoping
that the rain would hold out,

but hunting on a day like this

is not a good approach out here.

That’s why they
call it the rainforest.

I want a ham-and-cheese melt.

So, hunting in
the rain... No go.

Just like being back at home,

you’re working outside,
and it starts raining...

You know, it kind
of puts a damper

on the work you’re able to do.

We’re leaving tomorrow,
and, hopefully, we see a sign

of some pigs early in the
morning... we can get one.

inches of rainfall.

The heavy rains,

combined with low air
currents along the equator,

can cause drastic drops
in nighttime temperature.

Fire will be essential in
keeping the survivalists’

body temperatures from

Super loud thunder,
lightning right over on top of us.

[ Thunder rumbles ]

It’s pretty much pouring now.

Amber: Yeah, that was crazy.

Yeah.

We’re in the middle of the
worst storm we’ve experienced

since we’ve been
out here in 32 days.

We’ve been really
feeding the fire slowly

because we’re just, like,

shocked that this is happening

and there’s this much
water coming out of the sky.

[ Thunder cracks ]

Amazon’s not gonna
take us out with rain.

I just want to
say that out loud.

[ Thunder cracks ]

This is not the way
that we’re gonna go out.

We’re just gonna
sit it out and...

I don’t know.

Tomorrow, maybe
things will be different.

Maybe they won’t.

Russell: It has
been raining nonstop

for about 12 hours.

The lightning’s bad.
The thunder’s bad.

The rain’s bad.

- Lightning.
- Torrential downpour.

Chance is sitting next to me.

He’s cold. I’m cold.

We’re trying to take
our minds off of it, but...

Everything we talk
about just ain’t working.

So, things have gone
from tolerable to... Not.

The water from outside
the shelter has washed in

and put our fire out.

Now we are sitting here
naked, wet, and fireless.

Unfortunately, we
still don’t have a fire

’cause of the rain
and the wetness.

Well, we have two
choices, brother...

"a," we can wait it out here.

"B," we could head towards
the other camp in the rain

and possibly get hypothermia

to get where they may
or may not have fire.

If we’re gonna do option
"b," we need to beat feet now.

Yeah.

This shelter’s gonna stay
dry... It’s already proven that.

That shelter over
there leaks like a sieve.

Unless, out of nowhere,
this [bleep] rain clears up...

The sun comes out.

The sun’s not coming out.

Trail from here to
there is all up and down.

Shannon: I’m thinking we
have enough wood for tonight

and tomorrow if it goes through.

We’re gonna take apart our
benches and start burning them.

Fernando: This is no joke.

Miserable. Miserable.

And we are on day 32,
and this is the worst storm

we have ever experienced.

It is raining so bad right
now that it’s unbelievable.

We have a puddle that’s
going in the middle there,

so we only have very limited
dry space around everybody.

And our shelter is
holding up decent,

but we have our pot out
there, collecting water,

but this storm is
just not giving up.

This is like a
monsoon right now.

Just got to hold on.

Yeah, it’s really
cold out there.

We’re getting drips all
over us from the roof,

but we’re sticking it out.

Fernando: No, seriously...

The temperature has
dropped, like, massive amounts.

We got goose bumps.

The whole bed shakes every
once in a while from us shivering.

It sucks.

Chance: You know, I’m human.

Yes, I’ve been in training where
I’ve been wet and cold before.

I had to manage it then.

[ Thunder rumbles ]

Russell: Every once in a
while, we get a blast of cold wind,

and every time that happens,

another rain cloud comes over,

dumps a [bleep]
ton of water on us.

Today has been the worst.

I’m sitting here and wondering

what the [bleep] I’m doing.

[ Thunder rumbles ]

- Right.
- That thunder was... Fernando: Yeah.

It’s the middle of the
night, and it is pouring, like...

Probably the most severe
rain we’ve had all night.

’cause I can see how
something like this could

definitely put a damper on you

if you weren’t prepared
very well, and we are, indeed,

prepared for this kind of stuff.

Been a long night.

Yep.

We got fire, though.

Russell: And this [bleep]
ain’t stopping anytime soon.

It’s insane.

We’re both huddled up,
trying to stay dry and warm...

That’s all we’re doing.

overzealous, and then,

all of a sudden, you lose one,

and you lose it at the
wrong time, just like the fire,

and all of a sudden,

everything goes to
hell in a handbasket.

That’s where I’m at right now...

I’ve ever seen in my life.

It was so cold.
It was miserable.

Imagine how miserable we
would have been last night

if we didn’t have a fire.

Fernando: This thing goes
out... Our whole world changes.

Then I’ll devote the rest
of my day to firewood, so...

Fernando: I’m not
surprised at all that

Russell and chance
haven’t returned yet,

because this storm
has been insane.

And if I were them out there,

I wouldn’t travel
that long journey

between these two
camps in that storm...

There’s no way.

Chance: Just emotionally broken
down, physically broken down...

Feeling empty.

Being out in the
jungle, being alone...

The feeling of
missing somebody...

I feel like... like breaking.

The problem with vegetation
and rain is, after a while,

it all looks the same.

Russ brought confidence.

Seeing him leave
was... It was scary.

The sole reason I
stayed was for him.

I’m just very angry

and probably not making
sound emotional decisions.

To my creed, you never
leave a fallen comrade behind.

No, I told myself
I’d die before I’d quit.

Shannon: Oh, my god.

Amber: Oh, chance.
You okay, honey?

I brought you some water.

- Oh, thank you.
- Aww.

Shannon: Chance
came walking up the hill,

and you could see it on
his face that he was hurting.

Come sit over here,
chance. It’s warm. It’s dry.

- What?!
- No, he did not.

Man, just give me a
few minutes, please.

Like, I’m just letting...

I don’t really
feel all that great.

The water just rushed
in and put out the fire,

and he just... and he
couldn’t take any more.

persevere through that, man?

tapped, especially Russell sage.

And he put chance’s
life in danger.

That’s bullcrap.

Fernando: That is insane.

I can’t even imagine how
horrible that must have been.

frozen, chance.

shocker... Russell’s gone.

But I think this was a
wake-up call for everybody.

And Russell definitely
was mentally tough.

This goes to show
you that you cannot

outlast misery in this jungle.

will always win.
