- a lot of people it seems like the

essence of a martial arts film is

revenge somebody setting out to get

revenge and that's probably true and I

but I think there's another element in

the martial arts which is that the hero

not only sets out to get revenge for

some wrong that's done him but he sets

out to conquer his own demons in some

way and then meeting the bad guy

the inocent source has to be some demon

so it's kind of a noble hero alone

against the odds and his only weaknesses

are known

well traditionally the essential

characteristics of martial-arts hero has

always been that he's unstoppable that

he's strong in any situation that he

can't be shaken from his belief but I

think as the martial-arts hero matures

we're going to find more and more doing

again with with inner conflicts in the

martial arts hero with that demon that I

talked about that he has to face in

himself I think that's a kind of a

maturation process in that whole thing

and if you look at the old films and

even though Bruce Lee films that were so

wonderful

the psychological complexity of that

hero was almost nil compared to what

we're starting to see now

as Chinese action cinema continues to

reinvent itself its central theme always

seems to remain intact or no matter what

type of weapons are used or which era

the connecting theme of these action

extravaganzas is almost always the act

of vengeance perhaps this is why the

local Chinese films with their

universally understood messages have won

the appreciation of moviegoers all over

the world

their films back in the late 60s and

so before the worldwide kung fu craze

western movie audiences found adventure

while the Chinese had their own parallel

was a kickboxing champion that I would

be able to do fighting on film very

easily and what I found out was that all

the qualities you use as a real athlete

as a real fighter

you really don't use them as a film

fighter it's two totally different

things hiding a punch showing no emotion

when you're fighting those run those

qualities run just exactly opposite of

what you want to do on a film you want

to show the punch you want to show the

kick if you get hit you have to take the

reaction and show that the pain the

effect of the blows so really they're

very completely different it's all

cosmetic for film it really doesn't

matter whether I can run 6 miles or not

or whether I can fight 12 rounds

my cardiovascular is not as much a

tissue as muscle tone so I do a lot of

weight training now and your flexibility

of course it's important for a real

fight but it's really actually more

important for a film fighting because

you've got to really be able to extend

your legs to get the more dynamic and

dramatic pricing

in reality if someone were to grab you

for example or someone's throwing a

simple punch you you're not going to do

anything fancy someone grabs you just do

a simple let's say simple jujitsu

takedown or they grab you and just go

plan with a straight punch or plan with

a straight up ball boom and it's over

you go into films and then what you do

do something fancy like a block a strike

strike strike you do some sort of

circling boom but something that looks

Lee was destined to be the first

oriental superstar of Hollywood Cynthia

Rothrock became the first Westerner to

break into Chinese films as a leading

actress with box office mojo

basically it started from there I

realized that if I would want you to

continue films in Hong Kong

time to get into it because there's so

many things we have to learn and also

lot of tolerance a lot of patience a lot

you're not physically fit

you cannot keep up I mean first of all

the hours are long enough on a set

anyway but then to be fighting for seven

of those hours you know a day after day

after day because these action sequences

go on for a long time right you might be

fighting for five days I learn is a

films are really very very bad and and

then the new directors came out you know

the directors who were educated here in

film schools and they widely called Hong

Kong new way they was never seen early

80s that was great because then you see

a different different kinds of films

being made and you know new actors

coming out many aspiring Hong Kong

filmmakers were educated in the West and

brought back not only new film

technology but new Western ideas in

terms of script formation and emotional

deaths and their characters no longer

content with caricature heroes the new

action role model was one of strength

virility and maturity who faced very

real problems and resorted to more

realistic solutions
