extremely traumatizing.

I don't think any of
us got much sleep.

So it was a pretty
hard night last night.

We barely had any time to
get our perimeters established.

And we're waiting to hear
about Jake, phaedra, and Kim.

So hopefully they come
back to us this morning.

Steven: Nobody
knows what's going on.

People are dropping
like flies. It's terrifying.

All you can do is sit and watch.

It's an incredibly
helpless feeling.

[ Elephants trumpet ]

Jake: I have risen.

-Jake!
-All right, buddy.

Alyssa: Oh, my god.

You still hurting pretty
good or are you --

Jake: Yeah, it feels like I
had a baseball bat taken

to my abdomen
about 50 times, yeah.

Alyssa: [ Laughs ]

Steven: I'm glad
you're here, buddy.

-How are you?
-Uh, I'm better.

Last night was
probably the worst pain

that I've ever experienced.

I woke up feeling intense
seizing of these muscles,

which stopped.

So right now, it's just,
like, if I cough or laugh,

I feel really bad.

have cleared Jake

to continue with the challenge

but will monitor his
health every 24 hours.

Steven: So what happened?

Phaedra was right next to
me and screaming and yelling.

I don't know what's
wrong with me.

It was absolutely awful.

So, that's when I think
they made the decision

she had to go.

Stacey: It was heart-breaking.

I could totally
empathize with her.

On my challenge,
on day six, I was burnt

by a pot of boiling water,
and they made me leave.

I do everything I can
out here every single day

to make sure that does
not happen to me again.

[ Voice breaking

I just heard about Kim.
What happened to her?

We woke up to her
screaming bloody murder.

Kim: Oh, god.

Darrin: I already miss Kim.

It was just me
and her for so long.

Next thing I know, Kim's gone.

Alyssa: Man, I'm
just glad you're back.

Stacey: We almost lost
Jake, and he has been

the leader of the
group from the get-go.

Alyssa: Glad to see he's back.

So, do you think you could eat?

I don't know.

We're gonna try and get stuff

so that we can at least have
something in our stomach

besides these fruits right now.

Steven: We want
you to just recover.

We need you.

There's absolutely
safety in numbers

when it comes to survival,

and we need everyone
that we can have.

[ Elephant trumpets ]

Super rocky over here.

Right over there --
that's extraction zone.

[ Sighs ]

So, we got to get
through a week.

I got to try to do
everything I can

to put food in
everybody's bellies,

and we're going to have to get
an adequate source of protein.

We're going to have
to get something.

If not, we're not
going to make it.

It's simple as that.

We're dropping
like flies out here,

and it's the last push.

And we got to stick
together as a group.

I feel pressured to get
some food for these people.

You know, one kill,
even if it's a small animal,

is gonna totally
change this game for us.

There's no way I can
get to those females

without them spooking.

They've already sounded
off their alert calls once.

But we got lions here
every single night.

We got leopards that are
known to hunt humans.

The dangers here are
10 times what they were

at our last place.

[ Animal growls ]

I have a very small,
tight-knit little family here

that need me.

Jake's sick, and they
really need me now.

There's lots of bird
over here in this tree,

so hopefully I can get
something with the slingshot.

I believe that if I use
Steven's slingshot,

I could get a bird.

This is so important

because we lost
three people yesterday,

and there's just this
huge loss of morale

with one shot at that tree,

then we have so much hope left.

[ Breathes deeply, sniffles ]

Darrin: No.

You're not going

but it's certainly not enough.

And we still have a huge
extraction ahead of us.

It's windy. It's rainy.

It's thundering and lightning.

We're sitting in dirt,
and we're all wet.

Jake: Last night
was definitely brutal.

I don't think anyone
here slept well.

And I'm worried.

Being sick out here
is entirely different.

You don't have
any of the luxuries

of being sick at home.

since Jake's return,

Stacey: This one hit us hardest,

because Jake was the leader,

and he was the one
that kept everybody civil

and good to each other,

so it's very much like
having a death in the family.

been moving really slow.

I can notice myself
mumbling a ton.

Darrin: Extraction's
right around the corner.

We got a long walk ahead of us.

Steven: Yeah, we
still got a journey.

Stacey: We've
only got a little bit

and although it's really hard to
even get moving and get going,

we still need to be
able to feed ourselves.

Don't know what the demands
are gonna be for extraction,

and we're going to need
an amount of energy

to be able to hike out of here.

Narrator: If they
make it to day 40,

the survivalists face

a dangerous
four-mile journey north

through active lion territory

and across the
sun-scorched foothills

of the lebombo mountains
to their extraction point.

I want to go hunting.

Are you good just
fishing, Steven, for us?

I'm going to wait
like 5, 10 minutes,

and then I'm gonna go down there

and start doing it up.

Me and Darrin,
we're not friends.

We're co-workers right now.

Darrin: Downstream from us,

there's that one
super deep hole.

That'd be a good
one to maybe throw in

for some big catfish later.

Yeah.

He's always derogatory.

He always thinks he
has a better opinion,

but he literally brought
nothing to the table --

like, no food at all.

Darrin: When I come
back with a bunch of meat,

it'll make everyone
feel a whole lot better.

[ Antelope snorts ]

That really sucks.

I was right on him,

and the second I picked
up my bow, then he's --

I don't have the resources in me

to push myself every
day and try to get a big kill.

My body is shot.

[ Animal snorts ]

Alyssa: Oh, my god.

Steven: Aw [bleep]

Yeah, you see him?

Yeah, he's big as hell.

Look how big he is.

Steven: He's like a tank.

Alyssa: He's standing
his ground right now.

Cape buffalo is one
of the big five in Africa,

and they call them the big five

'cause those are what
kill the people the most.

Cape buffalo, they're,
like, the biggest,

baddest, meanest
animals out here.

These things can reach
almost 5,000 pounds.

I mean, lions don't
even mess with them.

[ Buffalo snorts ]

Alyssa: We're surrounded
by some large animals,

and they're getting
closer and closer to us.

That really worries
me right now.

We're supposed to run
if that one charges, right?

Um, yeah, let's --
he's looking agitated.

Yeah.

So, yeah, maybe it's boma time.

Stacey: We're going on a hunt.

The past few days have
been just a roller coaster, man.

But I'm ready to
start moving on.

I'm ready to get some
protein on the table,

ready to get people
fed, and then I'm ready

to get one step
closer to extraction.

Steven: It's a big
old monitor lizard.

Alyssa: [Bleep] Yeah.

Darrin: I got arrows.

Alyssa: Well, come get
him with the arrow -- run!

-[ Grunts ]

Darrin: 'Cause I got
a Thorn in my foot.

Stacey: Is he gone?

I didn't even see it.

Darrin: Hey, in the future,
if there's a monitor lizard

bow before you spook it.

a stampede down there.

Dead bodies were being dragged,

-They were right here.

That's our house right up there.

Alyssa: It was
at our front step.

Yep. That's absolutely nuts.

Stacey: To see
these fresh lion prints

so close to where
I'm sleeping is

a reality check that
this is their house,

and I could die.

Alyssa: Do you want to cut
down stuff for the shelter?

-Gotcha.

Stacey and I will
keep doing fire wood.

Darrin: We got lions
here every single night

right across from our boma.

We have to get this
shelter secure for the night.

It ain't no joke.

We got six days left.

Yeah, we can't get
complacent, you know?

Complacency kills people.

[ Sighs ]

Yeah, I'm starving.

Okay, I'm going to
set one up over here.

I just set up seven
snares, and then hope is

that they'll trip them

and it'll get stuck
around the neck

and they'll be tied to a tree.

'Cause this is a
main game trail.

We want the biggest one on here.

Alyssa: I didn't expect this
to be the last four standing.

You know, the people I
was most close to are gone.

Stacey: Beautiful snare.

Who knows?

I can't say that I'm going
to be walking out of here

on day 40 because
you never know,

but we're going to keep going

like it would have
been all of us.

We'll finish strong.

I just want to go home.

Stacey: It's been a
rough morning for me

sitting in the
hunting blind and...

Waiting for some nyala to
come through these snares.

But I haven't given up yet.

I'm ready to complete
the challenge.

It's pretty dangerous
to be this weak

in a environment like this,

and our bodies are so
low on sugars right now

that every time I stand up,

I get 10 to 30 seconds
of complete blackout.

Stacey: This is tough,

probably the toughest throughout
the entire challenge for me.

I just want to make sure
we get protein for tonight.

I'm starving, and I'm tired.

And I think once we
get some, like, protein

and some food in our bellies,
it's going to help everything.

I think I spotted an active
warthog den the other day,

so I'm gonna go check it out.

I think that's probably our
best bet for a mammal up here.

Yeah. Just be careful out there.

Those things have massive tusks.

Yeah.

Darrin: Yeah, it would be
cool to go spear a warthog,

but it would really suck to
have that warthog turn around

and tusk you and
you have to go home

because you thought it
would be cool to get a big kill in.

Steven: I'll beware.

Too far long in this journey

The mental game out
here is 90% of the same,

but I'm confident we're
gonna get through it

walking out of here,
not crawling out of here.

I find this warthog den,

and there appears
to be no exit holes,

so I know if something's in
there it ain't going nowhere.

It is crazy deep.

Yeah, there's
something down here.

Smell of urine and
feces is down there,

so it's obviously fairly active.

I don't know.

It could be a 300-pound warthog.

I got to smoke him out.

I'm gonna get some
elephant [bleep]

And I'm gonna light it on fire,

and I'm gonna
Chuck it down there.

And whatever it is in there
is gonna come running out,

and I'm going to stab it.

Anything could be in there --
mambas, scorpions, snakes.

A fricking jungle
cat could be in there.

I don't know.

flying out on my face.

But I'm going to smoke
out whatever's in here,

and I'm going to put it on
the kitchen table tonight.

It's pitch-black.

You can't see your
hand in front of your face,

and you feel like you're going
into the bowels of the earth.

a basic cast net.

to fall on top of him...

if I'm sitting
here waiting for it,

so the sooner I get

Last full day here.

Damn, I do want
to get out of here.

worry about lions.

trap I set earlier.

struggles though.

It's frustrating,
but I don't give up,

out without a fight.

There's two male
lions over there.

Steven: Look at that.

That is so intense.

We're maybe within maximum,

maybe 300, 400 yards
away from our shelter.

wary of humans,

these male lions can
close a distance of 50 yards

in 2 1/2 seconds.

They are eye [bleep] the
[bleep] out of me right now.

[ Lions yawns ]

It's terrifying.

Stacey: Oh, my god.

I think the lions are ready
to have their space back.

This is their home.

Steven: It's obvious that they
did not want us here anymore.

Today, I just --
mentally, I'm [bleep]

Darrin: Yeah, we
got to be careful.

Our cognitive
functions are so low

that we just got to
keep it to the basics.

Stacey: The best
thing we can do is

yeah, like, I have
no hero left in me.

All right. Time to
catch some bait.

Between the lions and the
heat and the starvation --

the threats don't change

just because the finish
line's right over there.

It's terrifying.

But if you just crawl in
a corner, you're dead.

I'll try a couple
different fishing rakes.

The game here is so
smart and sketched out

that to get them with
a primitive weapon is

nearly impossible.

I'm not gonna waste
my time and energy,

so I turned my atlatls
into basically fish Poles.

I got two hooks on
each one of my rods.

One live fish on one hook,
smash up one the other one.

If I can get four catfish,

we will all be completely
full for the day.

Well, that's literally probably
1,500-calories-plus each.

And then, all we have to
do is focus on extraction.

Survival isn't sitting around

and talking about
stuff that happened.

You know?

Whoo!

and provide food for everybody

and be successful,
it's exciting.

Those lions -- they came
way too close last night.

Over the past few days,
they've been getting closer

and closer every single night,

and last night, it
was a direct call to us

saying, "all right, you
guys need to leave."

I was legitimately,
like -- -scared.

Steven: Yeah.

That was intense.

Darrin: The absolute
worst they've been.

-That was very scary.
-Yeah.

Like you feel it
vibrating in your hollow.

Steven: It was pretty nuts.

The sooner we get
out of here, the better.

-Absolutely.
-You know, we're hydrated now.

Alyssa: Mm-hmm.

Should definitely get a
move on as soon as possible.

on us in a few minutes.

I am just very thankful
that it's extraction day

because if not, I would
be very uncomfortable

sleeping there at
night one more time.

before heading north

into the foothills toward

Big cats like to pick out the
weakest animals in a herd.

We're wandering around
kind of dazed and lethargic,

and that is every
sense to a predator

that, "this animal's
weak. It's an easy target."

Stacey: Is it getting tougher to

it seems to be getting thicker.

Darrin: Yeah,
these game trails are

definitely getting thinner.

Steven: Watch your step.

I think that's where we
turn and go straight uphill.

Yeah, I think we
make a right here.

Once we get up there,
get that high ground,

we'll be able to see everything.

Be careful and look around.

There's a lot of cover,
and cats love cover.

We're in their territory.

[ All breathing heavily ]

I feel like we're close.

to the top of this hill.

Steven: The sun's
getting up there.

Whew, yeah, it's getting hot.

Stacey: This hike is
tremendously difficult.

It's got to be well
over 100 degrees.

My legs are not okay
with this anymore.

But at the same time, my
body just keeps pushing

because I know
what's at the end of it

and all the weakness just
seems to kind of dissolve away

as if I'm on some kind
of, like, super drug.

Steven: This is
literally the last journey.

Every step we take,
we are one step closer

to crossing that finish line.

We're almost there.

Stacey: Oh, we're so close now.

10 days ago, we lost
half of our partners...

But we never gave up.

It's that not giving up

This is the first primitive-
survival-skills scenario

that I've struggled in

in my whole life
since childhood.

But I used it to grow inside.

This is definitely an
experience that will be with me

for the rest of my life.

Oh, my god, we haven't
been in a chair for so long.

challenge in Croatia,

I was forced to do a
medical tap on day 8,

so being invited
to come out here,

I was given an opportunity
for a hero's journey.

I took it, and I won.

And there's nothing
more fulfilling than that.

We're finally going home now.
