In this lecture we're gonna go ahead and take what we learned in the last three lectures and we're going

to apply that to a project.

So this project we're going to take this photo of this guy playing basketball and we're going to break

him down into his line his shapes and his forms.

Now if you've taken any of my previous courses we usually will trace over the photograph.

But for this assignment we're actually going to want to just draw on our own.

So first what we want to do is we want to look for lines.

We're trying to just develop our mind to see lines in photographs and reference and add your own character

designs.

So first let's look for the line of action so if you remember the line of action is the line that runs

through the main part of the body usually from the tip of the head to the toe.

So in this case it kind of has a line of action that's going through his body like this is a different

color just so you can see that a little bit better she has a line of action kind of running through

his body actually in this case kind of starts out his hands and goes out his feet.

So it's kind of like that.

So what we want to do is we want to draw that line of action.

So on your own piece of paper looking at this photograph we want to try to mimic the line of action

we see right there.

So it's basically just something like that.

So just kind of curves back like that.

Nice and simple it doesn't have to match perfectly you just want to look for that line of action.

We also see things like some of this pinch and stretch lines so for example right here you kind of get

that shape right there and then we get the stretch shape right here so let's go ahead and let's try

drawing that on her piece of paper.

So we just go ahead and looking at what we have here.

It's kind of like that

just like that and by looking at photographs and reference photos and trying to find these lines it's

going to help develop your mind so that you start thinking in terms of lines in this way because thinking

of lines in this way for your character designs is going to be really important.

So once you've done that then we want to go ahead and we want to start breaking him down into shapes.

So for example we could go ahead and we could break his chest down into a square type shape or maybe

a rectangle we could break down his pelvis area into another rectangle like that and then we could break

a shoulder down into let's say a circle.

And then his bicep into an oval then we could do a trapezoid force for arm like that.

And once you start breaking them down into shapes you can start smoothing things out.

So there's a spine

over there for his by whom we can smooth them out right here on the chest.

Maybe we want to actually make this chest stick out a little bit more.

That you can see we can start to break him down into a simple shape.

So I want you to do that as well and finish him out completely including the bullet you can glue the

ball with your shape breakdown after we've done that.

Then we want to move on to form.

So we're basically going to do the same thing we just did with the shapes except we're gonna break it

down into the simple form.

So for example his pelvis area we could just go ahead and draw it in kind of like a rectangle type cube

like that.

And then for his chest area we could do another rectangle

like that.

Maybe we want that to be a little bit bigger.

So I would go ahead and raise that if I was doing that with paper and pencil and just redraw a little

bit bigger

we could break his arm or shoulder down into a sphere and his arm and to sort of an oval type form like

that and if we wanted to we could even put kind of a cylinder right here kind of a bending cylinder.

It's kind of like that we want to start breaking them down into those simple forms for his thigh.

We could do another cylinder

just like that.

I wanted to I could go ahead and you race out this part right here just so we can start to see that

form a little bit better

right.

So I wanted to do those three things first break him down into his line then draw him breaking them

down into a simple shapes and then draw him breaking them down into a simple forms.

Now this is just one photograph and it would be really useful for you if you went out and you found

other photographs and you tried to break them down.

Their simple lines shapes and forms and more specifically people if you can find pictures of people

that's better because you try and learn how to do character design.
