nothing is more important

safety on set

with all the gear

stunts people

and everything else going on on any given set

there are million ways to get seriously hurt

or even killed

while the assurance was in post production

a camera assistant named Sarah Jones was hit by a train

and killed while working on set in Georgia

no film is worth the loss of human life

so how do you stay safe

well it starts by being very aware of the heavy camera

and lighting gear

that's almost every set

don't touch gear unless it's your responsibility

even if you're familiar with the equipment

if you're in a position where you set up gear

never leave anything set up in a precarious way

you place dirt

or in other words

a sandbag to secure sea stands

light stands

cranes tripods

or anything else heavy that might tip over

now of course

we'll look a lot more at C stands

in the training series on cinematography

but with setting them up

you wanna put the weight on the right side of the arm

when the grip head is facing you like this

so the weight will tighten the tension

you wanna place the

arm over the highest leg of the stand

and place dirt on that leg as well

when you plug something in

be aware that you've created a potentially treacherous

tripping hazard

run stingers

which is film language for extension cords

of walls if possible

if that's not possible

tape them down

as a matter of fact

just tape everything down

with a doubt

and these lights set up a certain way

um to avoid any

knocking anything over

we had torches

actual fire torches

and chapter 7

we'll look at how we made them

and the safety measures we implemented

to make sure no one got hurt

also we had a couple shoots at night

in a failure

remote location

if our lights went out

it would have been pitch black

which is obviously dangerous

so we had lights plugged into multiple circuits

just in case a feud was blown

or light went down for some reason

and you can imagine how helpful that was

while we were packing up at the end of the night

another big safety issue is exhaustion

on one of our production days

we pushed our casting crew

and worked a ridiculously long day

this is very common on independent

low budget shoots

but it can be extremely dangerous

if this is done multiple days in a row

people need to be well rested

not only to be at their creative best and all that

but more importantly

to travel safely to and from set

and to work safely while there

because working into the night was a necessity

on our long day

we made the day before really short and easy

we also made call time a little later that morning

on our big day

and also a little bit later the following morning

to maximize how much time people had off to rest

Heather also prepared a first aid station of sorts

with over the counter medications and bandages

or whatever

just in case somebody needed them

I think looking back

there might have been a few headaches

or paper cuts

or whatever

here and there

so it really helped to take care of our casting crew

safety is so important

even if you don't care about

the humanity of taking care of the crew

being safe will keep your schedule moving forward

I mean what if we didn't have those little

dinky first aid supplies on hand

what if we weren't safe

and someone had gotten hurt

it would have hurt our production

on every level
