to the audio commentary for episode three

of Freevee's Jury Duty .

We are here watching the episode
one more time together.

Let's go around the table
and introduce ourselves.

Hey, I'm James Marsden.
I play James Marsden.

Uh, I'm Mekki Leeper.
I play Noah, and I'm also a writer.

I'm Ronald Gladden,
and I play myself.

I'm Maria Russell,
and I play Inez De Leon.

And I'm Cassandra Blair,
and I play Vanessa.

And I'm Jake, and I was
a director and executive producer.

- I hate how good you are at that.
- I'm a Libra.

Do it again. Do it again.

- You're a Libra? Oh, my gosh.
- And Scorpio rising.

Lo and behold, yesterday,
the judge chose a foreperson.

So you had...
you had a camera, right?

So, this part I think is fun
because they told you

that every juror got a camera and
you would, like, at the end of the day,

do your own report of what happened
in your own perspective,

and, of course, we didn't get cameras,
but you took it seriously.

You actually gave notes.
You know what I mean?

So, funny point about that.
So, yes, that's exactly what happened.

I skipped multiple days of making videos,
thinking like, "Hey,

I'm gonna be one in twelve videos
that they're getting.

They're not gonna use all my stuff.

They're gonna get plenty of material
from these other people."

So I literally skipped days,
thinking like it's not a big deal.

Did they tell you,
"Hey, could you...?"

They did. They literally
asked me. They're like, "Hey,

if you could just do one every day,
that'd be great."

That's so funny.

Okay,
here's how nonchalant Ronald was.

Uh, you'll see that he's cut
straight into the van

because he strolls right by Todd
sitting on crutches.

- Doesn't say a word...
- Just goes, "What's up, Todd?"

Hello. How are you?

- Already on the van.
- Yeah, Ronald's in the van.

So we're trying to talk about it
kinda loudly outside the van.

-To see if he'll join the conversation.
- Yeah, like, "What are those?"

Yeah, truth...
I walked right by...

I thought he was just sitting on a chair.

Like, I didn't... It looked like a chair.

...chair pants, which he calls "chants"...

David really sat on these for...
By the way, you don't see the bus rides,

but the bus rides
are like 90-plus minutes.

- Oh, my gosh. Yeah.
- Because they're rehearsing,

and they need us
kind of in a nowhere world

while they move cameras.

Right, you guys
are on the way in,

and we're making you take a long route.

So, with the other actors,
we're prepping for our day

-and rehearsing...
- At the courthouse. Yeah.

So they would add 30-plus minutes
to our bus ride every day, uh,

-just to buy some time for the crew.
- Yes.

So that entire time,
David is sitting on the chair pants.

And that's why
I asked him if it hurts,

and he said it did. His privates.

-Oh, I'm feeling good. I'm ready to go.
- They were scrunched.

I imagine so.

'Cause while the sequestered
group were heading from the hotel,

we were already... the other group
were already at the courtroom,

going over the day, going over...
rehearsing the beats and everything.

And then we would leave the courtroom,
go hide around the corner,

and wait for your van
with Ronald in it to show up,

and then we would quote-unquote "arrive."

Yeah. That's a question
a lot of people had.

We would drive around
in a van, like, in circles. In circles.

'Cause you guys were staying
at another hotel.

Yeah, so when the vans
would leave at the end of a day of court,

there'd be two vans,
and one hotel would get in one van

and the other hotel and the other,

and then the vans would drive off,
and we'd wave goodbye,

and the real Ronald van
would go to a real hotel.

The other van would just circle the block
and come back,

-and we'd get in our cars and go home.

Now, Ronald, are we...
You're taking it all in here.

Well, so, yeah,
speaking on this Cody bit, um...

People might find this interesting.

So, I didn't chime into this at all

because this would have done Noah
zero good,

but, like, one of my best friends

from high school,
we lived together in college,

he actually moved down to San Diego
after I did, his name is Cody.

But I was not about to throw that
in the mix.

Wow.

What is that?

So he sits on them.
They're a chair for him.

- I love how you speak for him.
- But, see, you said it...

Yeah, you didn't say it
in a judgy way. You were just like,

"Yo, this is my dude's chants."

Dude, referring to yourself as JM
is so funny.

For my eyes only.
It's called Lone Pine.

- Confidential.

Here it is, guys.
It's Lone Pine.

- That was the thing.

-I'm gonna be busy reading.
- Okay.

You can tell Ronald's getting
a little over it at this point.

Yeah, I was just... Like
you said, I was getting a little over it.

- Mm-hmm.
- Classic wrap.

And now, obviously, what...
the chair pants thing, though, Ronald.

Obviously, you're helping.
You're not gonna be judgy.

But it... We made it pretty crazy.

He's cutting off circulation
to his genitals, and you're just like...

Are you just like,
"I'm gonna talk to him later about it"?

Yeah.
Essentially, yeah. I was...

This was not the time
or place to address it.

Well, we also...
We cut a bit on the fly here, where...

two people are supposed
to come remove Todd's seat.

-To unbolt it from the courthouse floor.
- Oh, I forgot about that.

Uh, and replace it with nothing,
so he could sit on the chair pants.

-But we thought it was too crazy.
- Yeah.

No, it's a good call
you guys cut it.

That would've raised some serious
red flags. I would not have believed that.

Yeah,
I think we saw that you were a little edgy

with James being extra Hollywoody
and jerky that morning,

and then we were worried
that you were getting suspicious.

Yeah. That was the morning,
wasn't it? When he...

Ronald, you can probably speak to this.

That was the day
you started to get suspicious

that it was a reality show or something.

Yeah, yeah, absolutely.

After we all left
at the end of the day,

we came back and... and had a little chat
and we're like, "Okay, tomorrow..."

Jake, you were like,
"Get ready for boring, boring court."

- Yeah.
- I wanna talk to this,

'cause the Internet
obviously loves this part.

Oh, I love it.

So, I don't want to take away
from the good deed, I guess,

that everyone's calling it that I did,

but I did not just automatically think
of A Bug's Life and think of Todd, um,

and I asked production.
It was just a random coincidence

that that movie was in my hotel room
when I got there.

And so I pieced it together by that.
I saw it and I said, "Oh, my God.

This guy reminds me of Flik
from the show."

Like, I didn't just randomly think
of A Bug's Life and request that.

It was already in my room.

That's a nominal part
of the kind thing that you did, though,

really, 'cause you just...
You took him and did a nice thing.

That was a kind of bit
that we were doing,

is like, "Let's put the worst
DVDs possible into the room."

-'Cause the producers all,

and me too, like an idiot,
thought it'd be really funny for you

to have to watch a bunch of bad DVDs.

Didn't think about the fact
that I also would then have to watch

all that stuff with you,

especially 'cause my character
has never seen

a lot of, like, you know,
mainstream media or whatever.

So you're like,
"Dude, you've never seen The Dark Knight?"

And I'm like, "No," and you're like,
"We gotta watch all three right now!"

"It'll just be a quick nine hours, man."

With glasses
that weren't your real prescription.

- Yeah. Yeah, I watched...
- So he's blind.

We watched so many movies.
We watched Dewey Cox .

-All the Nolan movies.
- Dewey Cox.

...weekend. I hope
you kept yourselves occupied...

What were
you thinking here, Ronald?

I mean, were you like, "This is..."
Is this getting absurd or is this...?

Yeah, I...

Absurd, but I mean, again, I also
was feeling bad for Todd as well too.

And you'll see in this next scene
coming up,

kind of like what Vanessa was saying...

-Cassandra. Damn, I messed up.

Kind of like what she was saying earlier

about how you guys
would do bits around me,

it didn't have to be in front of me,

but, like, when we go back
into the deliberation room,

and Todd, like, wipes a tear off his eye,
like, I definitely caught that,

and I was like,
"Oh, my God, I feel so bad."

Aww.

I mean, David Brown,
by the way, Todd, just another...

Everyone's incredible on this show,
but, man...

But David is...

He had such a tricky character
to commit to and make real,

uh, and just really knocked it
out of the park.

He really did.

Yeah, I don't want
to take anything away

from all the phenomenal actors,

but honestly, in my eyes,
I think Todd just killed it.

It's the fact that he lived next to me
and was Todd for three-plus weeks.

-Oh, my God.
- He had to commit

in a way that the rest of us
didn't have to.

Yeah, you should take
some notes, James.

That's what method acting is.

- Uh-oh.

No, sir.

James has taken
his headphones off.

He's stood up. He's approaching Ronald.

He's behind Ronald.
Ronald doesn't see him yet.

- Uh-oh. Uh-oh.

That was one of the moments,
Ronald, when you were like, "Hey, man,

don't worry about it. Brush it off.
Don't worry about other people."

That... In the control room,
we were just like...

"Oh, this guy! We love him!
He's our guy. He's perfect."

You know, we...

-"He's who we were hoping for."
- Yep.

Well, I was told
that they actually cut a part

of, like, one
of my video confessionals where...

'Cause I told them. I was like,
"I feel partly responsible for this

because I had just showed him
the movie A Bug's Life .

I was trying to build
his self-confidence."

And then the next day,
he shows up with these.

I was like, "Oh, man,
that was a plan backfire."

-Like, I gave him too much confidence.
- I've made a monster.

- Yeah.
- "And look what I've created."

So, yeah. I felt responsible
for his embarrassment,

so I felt terrible.

- Aww.
-Sorry. Jump scare.

I love that.

Okay, guys, I'm back.
I blew that off. Sorry.

-Method acting thing. I'm back. I'm back.

- This guy...
- In this hallway.

And he almost fell.

-He almost tripped. That's the same guy.
- Yeah, but in that hallway,

there was a gift shop thing
or a snack shop,

and there was a woman that just worked
in that snack shop all day.

Like hours and hours and hours,
just to make it real for you.

Where there was snacks
and sodas and stuff, whatever.

But we didn't have
a real register to process transactions,

so we were terrified that you'd be like,

"I'm just gonna go quick,
get a snack in between lunches."

We were like, "If he ever tries
to buy a snack at the snack shop,

someone has to jump in, say,
"Never mind. We'll get it for free."

Tell him not to pay because we're like,
"This isn't a real shop."

...but it's not. It's dehydrated
mango fibers and cacti.

Actually,
referring to paying too,

we didn't talk about that
at the food truck.

I actually paid for my own meal
before James offered to get everybody's.

- This is the big one.
- But then they didn't...

They handed me my card back way too fast
'cause I checked my bank statement.

I was like, "Oh, wow, they ran my card."

It was like within, like, a second
of me handing it to him.

I was like, "There's no way
they charged it."

And I saw that they didn't,
which made production nervous

'cause they thought I was thinking
it was fake,

but I was actually just thrilled.
I was like, "Sweet. I got some free food."

'Cause we had hired
the food truck,

so they were just giving out,
in their minds, free lunches all day.

We'd paid them for as many lunches
as they could make.

And, right, you gave him your card,

and then you checked your statement
to see if they charged you.

Listen, this is a man
that checks his stats.

He is on top of the credit card statement.

We were nervous
the first couple of days

when he had access to the internet too.

I was thinking like, if he looks up
Huntington Park Courthouse,

-is it gonna say "closed"?
- You can see it's closed. Yeah.

But to be fair, there's still
some businesses in San Diego, for example,

that I still go to. If you look them up
on like Apple Maps,

it'll say "permanently closed."

- Right, right. It's not updated.
- Yeah, exactly.

It's so... I mean, like,

the actual crafting
of all of this is just insane.

The logistics that our wonderful producers
had to deal with.

And thank God we had Nick and Todd
and everybody who work in Sasha's world...

- There's your doodle.
- Oh, yeah. Jesus Christ.

James, I wanna know,
did you actually draw that?

- Uh... I don't remember.

- No, did you?
- Firm yes.

I think it was something
the prop guy handed me.

Not appropriate-wise,
but, James, talent-wise,

-could you draw that?
- Yeah.

Yes, 'cause you're very talented.

Jake!

Let's separate the art
from the artist, right?

There were a few others. I think I drew...

I think I drew Alan doing something.

- Oh, I remember that one.
- Yeah, yeah.

- A little naughty.
- And I think I drew

the prosecutor.

The, um, uh... Vane... Um... Gosh.

- Trisha.

I did such a good job
at not remembering everyone's real names

because I didn't want to screw it up.

That I still don't know
who you people are.

- Oh, James.
- Oh, Barbara's sleeping.

So, yeah, we're trying

to actually get into the meat
of the case here

and be like, "We have a real court case
for you, I promise."

But also then trying
to sneak our jokes in here.

You guys had to develop
a real case.

Like something substantial enough

that somebody could sit
for hours a day and believe it.

A lot of work on the part
of Evan Williams, our lawyer-writer.

- And Trisha LaFache...
- I was gonna say...

...shall be the truth
and nothing but the truth,

under penalty of perjury?

Oh, okay.
So this is Cody, right?

Was it scripted
that he was actually supposed to come in

with a giant boner as well?

- Oh, my God.
- What?

I remember
there was a version of this episode

-where he... Sorry, not a boner.
- That he had a large package.

It was obvious
that he was packing.

So, not only was Cody a guy,
he actually was well-endowed.

- I don't remember that part.
- I don't remember that.

- I think it's just you, James.
- I know.

Mekki was also
really playing it sad here.

Like, I was actually getting nervous

about how bad Ronald
might be feeling for you.

Because you were playing it so crushed

about this Cody situation
and your girlfriend.

Look at me and Maria
look at each other.

- I cried in the jury box once.
- Oh, my God.

- Yeah, you did. You teared up.
- Yeah.

I broke every day,
and I had to pinch myself

to not laugh.

Well, Maria, you were lucky.
You were in the back row there

for our 12-person interviews, so if you...

You could sneak out a little smile
and Ronald wouldn't see.

No, I know.

And also, thank God
my character was a little lighter

'cause, my gosh...

"Also of note, he had emptied his bowels."

Peter Hulne, by the way,
really nailed it.

Oh, he nailed it.

Everybody who took the stand
did like, you know...

Again, you're seeing a few minutes.

You're seeing like maybe 90 seconds
of each of these people.

It was an hour.
They were up there for an hour every time.

- At least.
- And it was real.

And this was another part
that we didn't see beforehand.

- Yeah. Yeah.
- Yeah.

I'm in it.

If you were to have to describe
Mr. Morris's state when he came to

from being passed out,
would you describe his state as...

Poor Ben.

...calm and collected.
How would you phrase that?

Out of it.

He was just, like, lying there
with his tongue out

and his eyes rolled...

Also, the hierarchy
of management at Cinnamon and Sparrow

is very confusing.

Like, where's this guy
when we show up to the factory?

There's just a different guy
who runs the place,

who tells us how it's gonna work.

That's a good point.
I didn't even think about that.

Evan just being like,
"Uh-huh," nodding...

I can't remember.
Did they say that he...

He didn't work there anymore,
though, right?

- Yeah, we tried to cover...
- Something like that, yeah.

I just don't like him as a person.

Doesn't present well.

Inez was really able to say
some judgy things in a nice way.

Like, we still all loved Inez,
so you nailed it.

This... I mean, speaking
of everyone who takes the stand,

this gentleman gets up
and was there for maybe two hours.

Talking the most incredible...
You could...

you could tell he was, you know...
He had real experience as a therapist.

-But right out of the gate, he says this.
-With love addiction, polyamory...

That was one of my...
I was really trying to get that joke in.

I was like, "We gotta do
some very serious testimony.

You gotta throw this in."
And he's really...

He's also trained as an actor,
but also is trained as a therapist.

You could tell
he has a clinical background, yeah.

So, again,
the stuff you don't see

is the way he's talking clinically.

-He was such a big part of our reality.
- Yeah, absolutely.

So he could get away
with a crazy polyamory joke

because he had just spoken for 45 minutes
about real serious stuff.

Right. Exactly.

The real winner here is Shids

who had to stand
for all of that testimony.

Oh, man.

"These boots were made
for standing." You remember she said that?

I never knew...
I really could never tell

if Susan was actually napping or not.

- She was.

And we really had the judge
going after you, Ronald.

-We really had him.
- Did you die here?

-Were you dying?
- No, actually... So...

I feel like I have to explain myself here

'cause I kind of throw Barbara
under the bus,

but I bet James 20 bucks

that she was gonna get kicked off
the jury and he'd replace her.

And so I was trying to get her
out of there and get James in there.

- Wow.
-...so she's not missing...

James, I still owe you 20 bucks.

You know who you get it from?
You get it from Edy.

There was one day,
the actress who plays Jeannie,

she goes, "Marsden,
give me a hundred dollars."

And I just do.
I gave her a hundred dollars cash.

- She never gave it back?
- Never gave it back.

- Of course she didn't.
- Never gave it back.

You never asked for it back?

I mean, eh.
Do I look like I need it?

-I mean, come on.

- She was excited about that.
- Gotta give it out.

No, she posted something
about it. I went, "Wait a second."

"You never gave that back.
That was a bit." So, there you go, Ronald.

-Get it from her.

Oh, wait. You owe me the 20.
Yeah, that's right.

...he's just pointing at me
to point at you.

Barbara's hair
is one of my favorite things too.

As we go through the episodes,
it gets more askew and sort of crazy.

- Susan really was such a pro.

Just could hang with everyone.
Make it work.

She was so, so bomb.

...if your heart pumps more blood
and puts more oxygen in your brain,

and that's what a stimulant, like, um,
coffee or methamphetamine or cocaine,

those will all do.

Okay. Got it.

I really don't know what's going on.
I couldn't, uh...

I couldn't talk to Heidi again last night.

Wait.
Does Heidi have an Instagram? Because...

I'm not on Instagram, but she has it.

- Were you annoyed, Ronald?
- I was so annoyed at this part.

- I knew you were.
- And it's like I loved,

I loved Jeannie, and it's like,

I just wanted to slap her
during this part.

I was like, "Ugh, just stop."

This is one of the first moments
we saw you kind of uncomfortably squirm.

Like you felt bad for him genuinely.

Oh, well, it's such
a terrible position for him to be in.

He can do absolutely nothing about it,
and then she's just making it worse,

-and I just... Ugh. I wanted to slap her.

By the way, Ronald,
these are the moments...

You might not realize this.

We would then talk for hours
after the day was done

about this and be like,
"Man, he seemed really uncomfortable.

-Is this too much?" Like...
- Yup. Yeah.

We need a little bit
to make the scene work

where maybe he will feel uncomfortable,
but we don't want to go too far, like...

It was so hard to know where the line was,
and we never wanted to go too far,

so I know there were some moments
where you had to feel uncomfortable,

and I'm hoping we never went too crazy far

and caused you too much anguish,
'cause that was...

It was a very fine line to try to balance.

Oh, yeah. No, I don't think
you guys ever went too far.

And it was more of like
I felt bad for other people.

It wasn't me
who was in an awkward position.

It was me feeling for other people.

I do want to say here
that I tried to throw in a fun Easter egg

for my girlfriend's two real friends,
Brenna and Francisca.

-I did not anticipate that right here...
- She would call her ugly.

Yeah. Edy says
that Francisca is busted.

-She's so ugly.

And you can see me
looking to the camera for real.

- Oh, no.
- Yeah.

Those are
her two actual friends?

- Yeah, those are two real people.
- I did not know that.

But Edy was joking.

Edy was joking, of course.
Yeah, yeah.

Francisca is very particular
about her image and things,

so I, like, warned her
before the show came out

-that that happens, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- Oh, no.

...genius. 'Cause the stuff
you be saying...

That's really kind. Thank you.

Aww.

By the way,
I also think that's a bit of Shids

actually talking to David.

It's what you're saying, James,
that improv that he's spitting out.

So technically, I think
everyone, as we went, was like,

"Man, this guy's really doing it."

- Prepared, yeah.
-Um, hi.

- Hi.
- Oh, Lisa.

Just comes in and crushes this.

She is so good.
Oh, my God, she's so funny.

This is hilarious.

I, um, a social media...

She's been one of my favorite
people to follow after the reveal.

-I think she's hilarious. She's so funny.
- Oh, is she?

One of them. I said one of them.

-James is clearly number one.
- Oh, is she?

God, I get around you guys,
I become this guy again.

-It's a problem. It's a real problem.

- Your face.
- Jesus.

I'm a lash tech also,
but I haven't really...

This is another one
where obviously we don't tell you guys

exactly how hard she's gonna go on this,

but we're planning
and we're trying to balance beforehand

how... how much
of this person she can pull off

in a real way in front of you,
and she just nailed it.

When I imagine an influencer
who would be pretty full of themselves,

-I mean, she nailed it. That was perfect.
- Oh, nailed it.

-Yes.
- I remember, um...

Deb, uh, Debra, Trisha, our attorney here,

was pretty nervous about the bit coming up

where it was like,
"Let me show you these tweets."

And then the idea was she's just
gonna read the tweets back exactly

and give no insight into them.

And I remember Trisha being like,
"Really?" Like...

"How am I supposed to do this as a lawy...
And then don't act weird,

that's all she did?" It's like,
"No, no, no, we'll get through it.

-It'll be okay. Let's do it. Let's do it."
- Oh, my gosh. So funny.

- Narsty.
- Narsty.

Yeah, that one, I was like,
"Did she really say that?"

That would give me
like a heart attack

every time somebody did that

because I was like
it's gonna be one joke too far,

and Ronald's gonna be like, "Wait a sec."

Exactly.

That's one
of my favorite Vanessa moments.

Keeping it real, dude.
Vanessa keeps it real.

There's so many violent people
on the Internet

that are like,
"I also wanted to fight her."

Can you describe...

- Please don't fight Genevieve.

She has the most...

almost the most amount of followers
that you could have.

And so followers,
when you follow someone else,

you're basically saying...

When we were talking with her

about the character,
we were like, "What..."

"How do we make you say stuff
in a pleasant way,

but make you, like, the worst?"

And those were the two things.
It was like,

well, just explain that she thinks
followers are your true worth.

Right? Make you better than someone.

And it was like... I was like,
"Can you somehow get in

that you don't...
You would never adopt a pet?

You're only gonna buy them.

'Cause that's like the worst thing
you can do.

Ronald does so well.
Oh, my gosh, he did that so good.

...printed a whole bunch
of gibberish on the shirts,

and now all the shirts are unusable.

Allegedly.

I'm gonna show you a series
of tweets from the influencer.

-Can you read it?
- Yeah.

"@cinnamon&sparrow
I can't even. Never again."

- There had to be...

There had to be 20 plus cards.

- Oh, more. It was easy.
- So many.

What made you pick
the ones that you picked?

I don't know.
The bones and more bones.

Bones and more bones is so funny.

Dead, dead, dead.

This was also when...
Speaking of our reality bank.

'Cause we're like almost a week in
at this point or something like that.

Maybe a little more.

We've obviously got a juxta...
But this felt like...

Oh, let's go for a pure comedy sketch,
you know what I mean?

In the middle of the court case.

Maybe we've earned it by now.
That we're deep in enough

that we can... I don't think
we could've done this on day one.

-You know what I mean?
- Yeah.

And the audience doesn't see
that there's hours of footage

-of us just taking in the...
- It's hard for people...

Like, how do you not respond to this?
How do you not think it's crazy?

It's 'cause they don't understand,
we were there for hours. You spent...

Your whole day was encompassed.

It's real Truman Show .
Was encompassed by stuff

to make you believe that this is real.
Like that was our one job,

is make you believe it's real.

Yeah, the goal was to be able

to do something like this,
like this scene,

but at the end of the day,

you would look back and go like,
"It wasn't that crazy of a day."

'Cause we filled it
with so much other normal, boring stuff,

that these are literally
the only 90 seconds

that were crazy in the day.

Yep. And I've told people that
as well too, because it's like,

yeah, you see the crazy stuff on camera,

but you don't see the six to eight hours
for the rest of the day

where nothing,
literally nothing happened. Yeah.

Yeah.

Oh.

That's where you guys
at the hotel really took the heavy lifting

because we were in character
all day at court.

You were in character at the hotel
on top of that.

Like, that was a long time
to be in character.

Yeah. Sitting in there
with a tie on, being like, "What's Mario?"

- "What's Mario?"
- And then, Mekki,

didn't you want to do something
after as well with Ronald?

- What do you mean?
- Like, your...

The trip that you potentially
wanted to take.

Oh, yeah. I was down to like...

Yeah, there was...
We were talking about maybe...

There's a weekend where Ronald and I
go camping alone.

Oh, my God.

- I was totally gonna do that.

Well, we kind of wanted
to give Ronald...

Ronald, we wanted to give you a break

from, like, courtroom to hotel,
courtroom to hotel.

So we were just trying to think of, like,

"How do we still like not let him
go back on his phone,

but, like, give him a break?"

'Cause it was, you know...
This is gonna happen for three weeks.

And we're like, maybe we can just like
