we've already talked a little bit about this

but I wanted to talk specifically

about how long the day should be by the way

the shoot day is usually just referred to as the day

so you might say

for example

let's rehearse this now without props

but on the day

you'll have props

so how long should you make the day

the bottom line is

that I don't have a specific number for you

standard work day in most places is a course

about eight hours

not including meals

but for a non union

low budget film sets

it's very common to go longer

we certainly did on the second day of production

on the assurance

but it's important to not do that lightly or frequently

because I knew we were going to need a long day

because of the night shoot

I scheduled that in the middle of our main

three day production schedule

then I made the day before and the day after

much lighter and easier

so that the longer day was easier to deal with

cast and crew could come into arrested

and leave the production on the last day

early enough to recuperate from it

but it's not just about being polite to the crew

as we've talked about so many times

a tired crew is just an unsafe crew

and not just on set

but a lot of the crew has to pack up their gear

at the end of the day

and then they have to drive home

and they need to be able to do both of those things

safely and especially

if you have multiple shoot days in a row

the chances of someone getting injured

skyrocket if they're pushed too hard

also I found that

the actors just didn't have much more to give

after giving all day

maybe it was just because of the cold

but they just didn't have much energy left

to give their performances after so many hours on set

so be aware that making long shoot days

can not only be dangerous for your crew

but it can also result in lower quality work

from both cast and crew
