the gaffer is the person in charge

of the lighting department on a film set

technically

the gaffer is the head electrician

and works under the direction of the DP

to set up and manage the lights

the gaffer for the assurance was Chris Taylor

this guy saved my life so many times

because I was both director and DP

I would often need to speak with actors or other people

all the time

and Chris is a very successful DP himself

so when it was time to set up for a shot

if I was tied up doing something else

he would just start getting things ready

in case I needed them

these shots are so much better because of him

Chris and his very talented team of helpers

were one of the best things to happen to our production

they were so fast

and on top of everything

the gaffer will often have a truck

filled with lights and supplies

for setting up or adjusting the properties of light

or will be responsible for renting one

Chris owns a large truck

and most of the lights and gear we needed for this film

and that really helped us out

because the gaffer is in charge

of all things electrical

it's important

that they understand a bit about circuits and power

our location was somewhat remote

and I had no idea how much power we had

so one of Chris's first steps when he got to set

was to find the fuse box

and figure out how much power we had available

we need electricity for d I t computers

battery chargers

cameras toasters

for craft services

all kinds of things

so although Chris worried about lighting

most of the time as gaffer

he was also the person we would go to

when we had to plug something in

Chris could always tell us

if we had enough power

to toast a bagel

or if we had to wait

until the scene was done

and we could unplug some lights

his expertise

to only kept power to our set

but also kept everyone safe

and made this film look so much better
