obviously before doing anything with fire

or anything dangerous on set

you just thoroughly test it

and be very aware of every potential injury

so you can prevent it

we kept the fire and all fire materials

away from cast and crew

away from food

and always had a full bucket of water

in case something needed to be extinguished

I also bought a bunch of gloves

so that the crew didn't get any fuel on their skin

not only to prevent possible irritation

but also so that people didn't have anything

flammable on them

while they were working with fire

for our one shot

with Andrew Trebellini holding the torch

which might have been

the most dangerous thing we did on the insurance

we shot it pretty tight

so we could have people standing

just out of frame next to him

in case something caught on fire

we also made sure that the torch

was a pretty long torch

and that he never held it up high

so that falling debris from the torch would fall on him

or his clothing

and of course

we made sure to keep him a safe distance

from William Brad

and his luxurious and flammable hair

now we also offset them

so that William was actually off the side of it

and not directly in front of the torch

so on camera

they look to be closer than they actually were

we also made sure to rehearse it several times

without fire

so the actors knew exactly what they were doing

before flames were involved

we also purchased a fire extinguisher from Walmart

right before the shoot

so it was brand new

full and ready to go

and we always had it next to the set

whenever we're using torches

however after we wrapped

I opened up the box

the fire extinguisher

and I tested it

and found out the fire extinguisher didn't work at all

it was a dud

so the fire broken out

we would have been in serious trouble

so from now on

I'm going to test fire extinguishers

before bringing them to set

another thing that made us easier to be safe

was that the shoes

outside of Seattle

where the ground is almost always wet

and these kind of fireworks are legal in July

I think we wanted to set that whole forest on fire

there's no way that we could have

however I'm originally from Southern California

where it's so dry and hot

that a drop cigarette can burn the whole place down

so even if you follow all of these safety rules

torches just might not be a great idea where you live

when in doubt

talk to the local fire department

and get permits and or professional assistance
