I play Noah and I'm a Writer.

in a fun little room in Burbank...

He knows what happened.

I will arrest every last one of y'all.

I do remember that.
Like, please don't tell me your real names

because I will mess up
and I'll call you by your real name.

Yeah, that was the reason.

Ronald, how are you doing?

How's it-- You've watched
these a couple times already.

Oh, I've relived this more than once.

Poor baby.

But not with us.
Not with a special experience.

This is a special kind of abuse.

Oh, boy. Day one.

This was very nerve-wracking.

From the people that I've seen
in the waiting room.

You have everybody from
all classes of people, age groups.

Yeah. Ronald,
we were, we had every update

on like how far away you were
when you were about to arrive

when you were gonna walk in. And we had
been prepping for this for so long.

I think everyone's stomachs
were just full knots.

I actually missed the rehearsal.

I was like sick the day of the rehearsal.

So these like moments on camera

like the only time I ever
experienced this waiting room.

I was like terrified.

- Right.
- Oh, wow.

Because we rehearsed
the whole show. But the first day--

This day when Ronald got here,
we rehearsed multiple times.

And we had a whole day
just rehearsing that day.

And yeah, Mekki missed that.

But then on the other hand,
I'm also kind of a fun girl.

Well, and this is
that first day we rehearsed what,

two weeks before
or something like that. Right?

-A week or two before.
- Yeah.

And everyone was,
this is James by the way.

Hi. Get used to my voice. Uh...

This was the day everyone was thinking

I'm gonna be the one that screws this up.

Who was all the choreography of the chairs

and figuring out
who was sitting next to who.

And if someone was forgetting.

And in rehearsals, we screwed it up
a few times and we needed to make sure

that we got him to sit in that seat.

Right.

Ronald, what were you thinking
you signed up for?

We all know you signed up
for the documentary

but tell us about when you're walking in
to that room for the first time

and in the courthouse.

I mean, it was just,
it was a strange feeling.

Obviously I'd never been
on jury duty before

so I had no idea what I was going into and
I was honestly just prepped for anything.

When did you first notice
like Jeannie or Mekki?

Edy. Sorry, I combined names.

I know them by Jeannie or Noah.

So I noticed Jeannie right away.

Honestly, I fell in love with her
almost instantly.

Aww.

When she told me
she took that candy to such a place.

-I was like, that's my girl.

- Oh, my God.

Just an auxiliary reservoir
that would be either grafted

onto or inside of the body.

-Yes.
-For hydration.

David.

Oh, my God. David.

- Go, Ron.

Yeah, I-- I said--

I didn't know this happened.
This cracked me up when I watched it.

Ronald,
did you notice any of this?

No, I didn't see this.
I was pretty focused on Edy and Noah.

Shh. Okay, everybody,
this is the good part.

- Sorry,

-I'm becoming the character again.
- Here we go.

Gosh, she did such a good job.

- Sasha.
- Yeah, she was great.

She was amazing.

What's that?

I was told they paid her a $100.
So they delete those photos

-they took with you.

I hope that's true.

I, um, this was really
the first moment

where we thought Ronald was gonna say,
"Nope, I'm outta here.

-What's going on?"
- Right.

Oh, James, I'm so sorry man.
But I even--

I still didn't recognize who you were.
It took me a little bit.

Ronald, I will say,
it's two weeks into this

or however many days this show been out.

That is one of the moments
that's every everyone's favorite.

I do not know who the hell you are.

Oh, shit, dude, that's where

I've been...
thinking that this entire time.

I didn't ask your name. Forgive me.

Yeah, I was trying to pinpoint it.

Like, that was funny too
cause we saw a picture of you

but we'd never seen you like present,
you know what I mean?

Like in real life, what you look like.

So, not knowing exactly
what you were gonna look like

-when you walked in the room.
- Right.

-Yeah, that he was six.
- Yeah. Yeah.

He's in The Notebook?

And James, we were trying to--

The other guy in the Notebook.

Oh, my God. I haven't seen that movie
in so long I didn't even--

That laugh. That's so precious.

If you saw it the night before,
you wouldn't have remembered it.

The sock joke is so funny
because what reach it is.

- It's such a reach.

I heard that was not a good movie.

Sit down.

- Ronald!

- No. I'm sorry, James.
- Now, Ronald,

do I presume when he told you
he was in that movie

that you just did not presume
he was a major role in that movie?

I did not know he was a major role.

- So that it was okay

to be like, "Oh, I heard not good."

Absolutely. Yeah. If he's
not a main role, it's not his movie.

It's a big, big meeting.

I mean, how long does this normally take?

-Have you done this before?
-I was gonna ask you.

What do people usually say when
they're trying to, like, get out of this?

Poor Mekki.

Well, I was gonna say,
Mekki can really speak to this

cause we had actually cut this beat
thinking we'd never get it

and then Ronald did it for us.

Yeah. We were just in there
for a lot longer than I anticipated.

cause it's like everything's in real time.

If you see us in court
for like 30 seconds,

-we were really there for four hours.
- Hours. Yeah.

So I mean, yeah,
that was just kind of like

I was getting a little bored
and it seemed like

Ronald was more talkative
than we expected.

- Right.
- And, uh...

Yeah. The bit went back in.

- Nikki.

But her attitude is so perfect.

- The Best.
- It's from the get.

- No one else could have done it.
- No.

Enter the legend Alan Barinholtz.

Oh, my gosh.

He really, I mean,

-he and Sahid added such an authenticity.
- So much.

To okay,
we're in a real courtroom.

You know what I mean?

Oh, absolutely.
And I've been in courtrooms before.

I've been in front of judges.
Like, he nailed it.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

Also like
the quickest thing, uh,

in his early 20's Alan was
a standup, then he had a family.

Then he was a lawyer for 33 years.

His kids became actors,
then he became an actor.

- He did standup?
- Yeah.

- You're kidding.
- Yeah. He's a standup.

- Wow.
- And now,

because of his experience on the show,
he moved out here.

- He now lives out here in LA.
- Yes.

We did a pilot together.
We Were both--

- You guys did a pilot together?
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.

That's awesome.

Why wasn't I in it?

- Something inside and come out?

No, I usually okay.

James, I will say
I did notice you checking your hair

in your phone there
and I caught you by the side of my eye.

"I was like, oh my God,
what is this guy doing?"

I was hoping you didn't see that.

Oh, I definitely caught that.

- Little touches. This woman.
- Bunny!

So great.

-This is just...

Here's another thing.

There's so many people just.
Will come up to me and say,

"God you improved, all that."
Like, "No."

There were scripts that were
written without dialogue,

but there were massive
comedy beats that were,

that we were to push on the days.

And in the, in the scene description
they would be, you know,

this woman stands up and says
it's something like it's not her thing.

-Right?
- There were some

little lines scripted.
Like hopefully we get to a joke like this.

Ladies and gentlemen, if you leave
the property without telling us,

that's a contempt of court.
You don't wanna do that to yourself, okay?

-Oh, shit.
- Thank you.

But a lot of it too,
like what you guys had to do is--

And you know, Ronald, you probably--
Hopefully you never felt this but

these guys had to know what the beats were
what the goals for the jokes were.

And like, Mekki was saying
with the racist beat is, um...

a lot of times it was
just biding your time

and when you saw an opportunity
to hit the ball,

you know, if you see a pitch coming in,
go try to hit it.

And that was what was tough and unique.

But what you guys just killed, you know?

It's really hard to do.

- Yeah, you gotta be ready.
- Yeah.

- Yeah.
- Yeah. And listening.

-You gotta really be paying attention.
- Which is also why on some days

I'm sure you felt like people
were like treating you weird

for like, chunks of the day.
He would be like,

"All right. Nobody started
a conversation with Ronald

whenever we get back at lunch."

Did you feel that Ronald?

- I did not. No.
- Wow.

Wait, did that just work?

Did you see me wrapped up in that scarf?

I was so cold.

In addition to
the 3.6-liter liquid reservoir,

I've also added a reservoir for solids...

My boy Todd.

... of solid food provided that it's
emulsified into a fine paste first.

I'm just gonna say,
for every bit that is in the show

of David talking about something insane

know that there's four hours
of footage of him

talking equally insane as that.

He was like a fire hose of madness.

Yeah. Do you remember when
we were running through our characters

and everybody was like kind of
interviewed very quickly

and we would kind of describe our name
and where we're from and what we do

and everybody kinda was going
and there would be like a little laughter

like, "Oh, that's good."
You know? Right.

And David went and like,
he just went on for so long

people started to like
fall asleep and tune out.

-And it was like, he was too good.
- He was a real guy.

He was very good at it.

Okay, everyone,
I'd love to take photos with everyone,

I just don't have the time today.

But in lieu of selfies, I'm buying lunch.
Lunch is on me.

"In lieu of selfies."

I can't help watch this
and think of all the things

that actually couldn't even make the show.

-Right?
- Yeah.

There was so many
extra beats and moments that--

Ally McBeal, season five?
Glenn Foy, the new associate?

I don't know,
because there were cameras everywhere

-catching little conversations.
- Yeah. I love that moment.

That didn't work.

I don't understand how
this didn't make it in the bit,

James, when they ask you
for your credit card

and then you turn to me and ask me
if I want to split it with you?

- Oh, my.

That was gold.
How did that not make it?

We maybe should have put that in.

I have a receipt.

We have our best laid plans
but if the camera wasn't on it,

Wait! Was that real?
Was that real?

-It was So good.
- It was so funny.

Oh, my God.

Well, and the fact that
there were so many cameras going

and so pointing in so many different
directions all the time,

and it was like you were shooting live
theater for five hours.

I imagine the editor's job as well
sort of weeding through all of this

-must have been a task.
- I told somebody that.

It was kinda like being
at summer camp for months,

you know what I mean?
And then somebody's just like,

"Hey I cut together
a couple 20 minute clips."

And you're like,
"I have no idea what this was gonna be."

Oh, yeah. I-- I, you know...

James, why didn't you tell me
Ben Schwartz was in that movie.

That's maybe
my favorite joke in the show.

That day we wrapped
and I called him immediately

and made him so happy to know that.

"You didn't tell me
Ben Schwartz was in it!"

- I love how James just threw in

-that he has Ben Schwartz number.

Ronald,
how are you balancing at this point?

I mean, you know everything now, but like,

you know, James is presenting
this Hollywood version of himself

and it's just like, I guess
that's how these people act sometimes

or like,
what's going through your head?

Yeah, I mean like,
obviously I've never been surrounded

by a Hollywood superstar,
so I had no idea what he was like

and I just took it at face value.

Well, it was this interesting
little dance where I was like

I had to befriend you and get close to you
but also do my little

-jackass Marsden bits.
- Hm-hm.

It was a great balancing act
you did for sure.

And the English translation of the
French Voir Dire is "to speak the truth."

This is another whole section here where

I think a lot about what's not in the show

because we really had to balance

trying to get you guys to be
a little silly up there

and give us some jokes for the show,
but not freak Ronald out

that he's only seeing
a circus of crazy people.

So we had a lot of
other people go up there

and give very normal answers
or hours and hours.

- Right.
- To mix it up.

And obviously none of that's in the show.

Especially in this early episode,

this very first episode we all were like,

"Hey, we gotta start somewhat slow

and we can't get a little too goofy
with the beats."

We gotta, what do, what do we call it?
We gotta feed the what bank?

- The Reality bank.
- Reality bank.

We gotta build up
the boring reality

before we can make a withdrawal.
We gotta build up that reality bank.

Too suspicious too early. Yeah.

You know what else
I was wondering, Ronald, too is, uh,

because you were from LA
and a lot of people don't know that

that you came in from out of town,
they assume that you were in LA

but coming to a courthouse in LA,

you might believe that there's some
kooky people just because it's LA. Right?

Oh, I definitely had
that mentality just being in LA alone.

I was expecting to just be
surrounded by crazy.

It's a, it's a numbers game, you know?

You get enough people in a room,
especially in a town like LA,

-you're gonna have a lot of diversity.
- Right, right.

By the way, we should quickly
talk about Kirk Fox here who there's,

I know there's a lot of talk
on the internet about,

so funny cause everyone's saying,

"How did he not recognize Sewage Joe?"

And the irony is, you're a huge
Parks and Recs fan.

And we were terrified you were
gonna recognize him and in fact,

we made him grow a beard, uh,
to hide the mustache.

You made him sit on
the other side of the table.

And then we tried
to separate him from you.

Because we were super worried
once we realized you knew the show.

No, it was a good call
in your guys' part.

cause if you wouldn't have
had him grow out a beard

and if you wouldn't have
kept him away from me

I guarantee at some point
I would've recognized him.

- Right.
- What if I showed up

-wearing my Notebook costume?

Would you have recognized me then?

You would've stood a better chance.

All right, Ronald,
what's going through your head here?

Oh, my God. This was literally--

Oh, my God, I love at this part.

At this point
when you did this, Noah,

I literally thought that I was about
to get kicked outta the courtroom too.

"I was like,
this guy is gonna rat me out."

And I was like, "And I'm not even
gonna make it on the jury."

I literally thought
I was going home this day.

Dude I,
I think we might have even cut down

the amount of time that
I spent looking at you.

He says, "Who told you to say that?"

I really,

I gave you the stare down
for quite a minute.

Um...

I literally was just trying
to shrink it to my seat.

Oh, my God, Oh, my God.

If I put you under oath...

- The shake of the head.
- Alan's going,

"Who told you that?"

I want to say
that the room did not know

I was gonna say that. All the extras
did not know I was gonna say that.

Right. That's important too.
They didn't really know everything.

And it really takes the air out
of the room. It's a real gasp.

And people really are looking at,
I mean I just wanna, from my perspective

it was as if that actually happened to me.

- And that feels bad.

Oh, yeah. Thirty people
walked outta there that day

-thinking that was you, bud.

That's that guy.

People had a very minimal brief
about what the show even was

but they're like,
"That guy is a piece of garbage.

Some Garbage human being.

Well, by the way,
and I know you guys have given me

a little trouble about it,
like later when we showed

the video in the courtroom
without showing you guys first,

but part of the way to do this was like

we also didn't want anything
to feel overly rehearsed

cause that's like the first way
it feels fake.

So we had to keep you guys in the moment

knowing that you knew where
the guardrails were

-and we trusted you not to break.
- Yes.

But then we had
to throw stuff at you in real time too

-and let people kind of really react.
- Oh, man.

-The worst one was the animation, but--
- It was really scary.

Ugh.
I actually think it was dropping the TV.

Do you remember?

No, I did not tell you?

We didn't know
that TV was gonna happen.

I mean we're always scared
of something bad happening.

In France.

Oh, here we go. Wait.

James, I will say,
I did not understand this reference...

but I was talking to
Lee Eisenberg the other week

and he told me that he wrote
this joke like over ten years ago.

Oh, yeah.
This is a perfect one. Right.

That was a written joke.
That was not something I improvd

and I get all credit to Lee.

Actually, there's, is there a little
a battle between Lee and Gene

-is who wrote that joke?
- Oh really?

I think there is.

Well, the first episode,
the first two episodes more is written

and then it gets less specifically
written jokes as we go.

Because then we had Ronald
and we were reacting to Ronald.

- Yeah, in real time.
- But there was a lot where,

you know here we knew Ronald
would be sitting and listening

so we could, we could write
and prep that more.

And then it got looser as we went.

Did He know about the earbuds?

No. Did you know about that?

Did you know people had earbuds in?

I found out at the end.

I actually was told
that Lonnie lost his

there's like a $3,000 earpiece that fell
out at the park and they never found it.

Oh, I didn't know
he really, really lost it.

Our producer Nick Hatton
is shaking his head. That's true.

-He had to explain that.

Uh, Death at a Funeral.

- The earbuds I think.
- A pretty good job there.

Well-- You're feeding me some titles.

Right. And you took
none of his notes, by the way.

This is one of my
favorite beats of the whole thing of,

"All right, let's stand Ronald up
and let's ask him to name

as many of James' movies
as he can right next to James."

I really felt bad, dude.

The face you're making
model that blinks.

- Well, I will say too--
- Yeah. Exactly.

Kudos to the editing team
because I definitely let them know

that James was an unwanted distraction.

I told them about the lady
I had to take random photos with

-but they conveniently cut that out.
- Yeah.

This is where we started to know
what kind of person you were, Ronald.

It was like, there you were,

you didn't have to agree
to say my projects

and you were like trying to help
a guy out you just met.

-It was actually--
- But also at the same time

when the judge says,
"Well, will he distract you?"

He didn't go too far.
And he was honest and said,

-"No, not me."
- Yeah.

All right, folks...

To be fair, you guys,
full disclosure,

I wanted to be on the jury
and if I was gonna be there

obviously I wanted James to be there,
so I wanted to help the guy out

but there was definitely a part of me
that wanted him to be on the jury.

Let's be real here. Come on.

Tell us about
wanting to be on the jury

because what was your mindset coming into
the project that you thought it was?

Well, coming into it,
I mean, like I was kind of whatever,

like if I made the jury,
if I didn't it would've been whatever.

But after seeing all the crazy stuff
that happened on this,

I was like,
"Yeah, I gotta be a part of this.

At this point. Who was like
the craziest where you're like,

"This is freaking nuts."

- Noah?
- Yeah.

I was still hung up on the racism.

Oh, what about
the fact that he got picked?

That you saw him get picked for the Jury?

Yeah. I couldn't believe it.
I mean, I, I'm pretty sure I told him

that when I sit down,
"Like, I cannot believe they picked you."

-The gentleman who claimed to be racist.
-Oh, Noah.

Number 50.

Right there in
the blue shirt next to Ronald.

Quick shout out to Brian Ferrell
who we nicknamed Decoy.

- Decoy.
- Because, you know,

he's not in the episodes
he cuts down so the story's better.

But he was there the first two days
with Ronald as another person

with the documentary crew

who had been brought in
and answering questions

as like a person you were rooming,
like in the same hotel with.

- Reality Bank.
- Reality Bank. Yep.

building up that reality bank. He really
helped us seal the deal here early on.

Absolutely.

And then it made it
more real too because

-he obviously never made the final.
- Yeah.

The un unsung hero of this show.
Yeah, for sure.

He was your first interaction.

There was Tim the Mute.

It's so funny,
I recognize some of these extras

because of their Voir Deir.

They, you know, it's like there's a guy
in here who talked about airplane parts

for 30 minutes in the box.

That was another thing about
rehearsals especially with the background,

cause we didn't tell
the extra actors as much

and they didn't really get it
to not talk about acting.

So they'd be like
when we were rehearsing,

they'd be like, "Yeah, my call time."
We're like, "No, no, you can't say that."

And then they were talking to us
like they thought we were background.

Oof.

I love this one.

That was not written.
That's a James Marsden special,

which is so perfect.

And Ish. Cause Ish came back.

Yeah. Ishmael's follow up.

Oh, Chef's Kiss was so good.

Ronald, were you thinking
there's no way James would get picked

or were you hoping he would get picked?

I was hoping he would
get picked. Let's, let's be real.

I wanted him to be picked.

Oh, that was just
on the fly, man. It was brilliant.

and to the instructions of the court?

- I do.
- Yes.

Okay, typically what happens in...

Take us through the moment,
Ronald, in real time.

I mean, I don't really remember
what was going on through my mind

I mean, I had a feeling
I knew what James was doing

-you know, he made it pretty--
- Hand over the heart.

-He made it pretty abundant that he--
- Oh, you did?

- At time that he did that?
- Oh, absolutely.

When he, when he was telling me
like in the hallway,

he's like, "Oh, don't worry
I've got something else up my sleeve."

And then when they showed up I was like,
"Oh, that was a thousand."

- You knew?
- Oh, I knew instantly. Yeah.

So, but you ended up
looking up Sequester. When did it click?

What was gonna happen to you?
Cause of James.

It was that night
when I was looking everything up.

The biggest thing that kept popping up
was like the OJ Simpson trial.

And how that jury was sequestered.

It was coming from outside of the house.

I don't know how they
got through the other side doors.

Were you frustrated when
you realized that?

Because you knew
that he called the Paparazzi?

Oh, I was so mad.

You can... you can kind of see it in
one of the videos...

Yeah. You were like,
"I was not happy about that."

-Yeah. I remember.
- Yeah, yeah.

And that goes back
to like when I was on when I knew

I was on camera, I was very professional.

But that was, I was gonna say,
that's what's so fun about you

is because even when you were
clearly frustrated you kept a composure.

That was pretty fantastic.

By the way. I don't know
if it's okay to talk about cut bits

but the whole reason judge has
a bandage on his hand here.

Ronald, did you know about this?

The idea was when you
showed up in the morning

before you ever got in the court,

you were supposed to see a lady break
a car window and be really frantic.

And she was gonna say, "Oh,
I was gonna leave a note. Don't worry.

You don't have to tell anyone.
I'm leaving a note. I'll take care of it."

And then, then that's why
the judge cut his hand

and he was gonna say,
"Someone broken my window."

We were gonna have,
you have seen who did it

and you know,
"Oh, do you tell the judge or not?"

But then we were worried that one,
it was too crazy to do on day one

and two, that it was like kind of unfair
and too stressful to do to you,

to put you in that position of like,

"Something happened to the judge.
Do you do that?"

But that was like,

that's this whole awkward storyline of why
he still has blood and a bandage on

because it was a whole setup that
we like decided not to do last second.

- Yep.
- Yeah.

If somebody had told me about that.
I'm glad you guys didn't include that

cause you would've created
a real moral dilemma for me.

- Exactly.
- And I would've been sweating.

I will give you proper instructions
for sequestration in the morning.

-I don't know the definition of the word.
-I Googled it. It's "isolated."

It's gonna be, like, camp.
like, staying with all of these people.

How long did it take for you
to learn our real names after the show?

Oh, God, it was so terrible.
That was so hard.

I keep reverting back though.
Like, even last or a couple days ago

when I saw David,
I keep calling him Todd.

- It was just so hard.

He's so famously Todd now.
Like, that one's gonna stick for a while.

But you know what, and that's
the same for I think a lot of people

that worked on the show.

Those are still the first names
that pop in my head sometimes

just because we only used
the character names

so that we would never screw up.

- Except for that one day.

That one day or like or a few days?

We won't mention the names.

Well, also too,
when Noah called Ken by his real name Ron.

Cause he was like,
"Well, Ron spilled something."

I was like, "I wasn't even near the table.
What are you talking about?"

That's a moment
that's not in the show.

It's right as Tim is about to fall.

- Oof.
- Yeah. Yeah.

I, and I corrected it
really quickly, but it's Ronald's name.

I just wanna make it clear.
I was just really trying to get out...

Wait, James, it's a tiny thing
but I love when everyone's going around

to say one word against you
and you're like,

-"I'm in mourning for my career."

word rule. I need you to know how I feel.
