Matt: Whoa. Look at the size
of that bird.

Narrator:
With hunting season ending

and Jess
in the captain's seat...

Jess: You know, the first step,
if there is an accident,

you don't leave your plane.

Yeah, I would consider parting
with it for the right price.

Narrator: ...the team faces
an uphill battle...

What? (laughing)

...searching for post-war era
vehicles before time runs out.

Without getting to the top
of one of these hills,

we're probably never
going to get cellphone service.

Narrator: Across Canada,
there are thousands

of valuable classic cars
abandoned in ravines,

swamps, and barns.

A hidden gold mine out of reach

until now.

I'm a treasure hunter.
That's what I do.

I hunt classic cars
that others can't get.

Lee: This is definitely the most
Car Rescue rescue we've done.

Matt: Go!

Both (grunting):
Whoa!

Matt: It takes a team
to achieve the impossible,

and I have the best.

Pilot Jess is
our eye in the sky.

My brother Steve's
our wrench.

Dave is an expert body man.

Lee sets cars free.

And me? I set the mission
and I pay the bills.

We want to use your boat...

Narrator: They rescue cars
that were lost to history.

- ...as a winch.
- (laughing)

Narrator: And sell them
all over the world.

- (all cheering)
- Matt: People say we're crazy,

but I say we're
just crazy enough.

(engine buzzing)

Narrator: Matt and his team

are in the Peace River region
of northern Alberta,

hunting for classic cars
and trucks

they hope were left behind

during the post-World War II
economic boom.

And for the final mission
of the season,

Matt has handed the reins
over to Jess.

Don't know
if you know this about me,

but I love World War II history.

- Really?
- Yeah.

And one of the great things
about this area

is it was
the Northwest Staging Route

for planes to come up
through the States up to Alaska.

Narrator: During World War II,
the United States and Canada

built
the Northwest Staging Route,

a chain of airfields
through Alberta and Alaska

to the USSR,

so that warplanes
could be shipped to allies.

These airfields
and infrastructure

spurred population growth

and rapid development
after the war.

And during that post-war boom,

people were
starting to buy cars, right?

I think
we're going to have some luck

finding some '50s and '60s
in the area.

Matt:
I'm actually kind of excited

someone's taken that weight
off my shoulders.

You know what?
I'm feeling good about this.

I wouldn't lead the team
down a road,

if I didn't have faith in it

and if I didn't do
the research...

but I do have to say I'm still
happy you're paying the bills.

Uh-huh. Ask me that when we're
done the trip in three days.

Or ask me that when you've got

a big old semi-load
full of profit.

What do you call it?
It's, uh... "delegate."

It's this new word
I've been trying to do.

I'm a bit of a fly on the wall
on this one, you know?

I'm just going to do what I do
and try not to sweat too much

as you just burn my money.

The team's now on my shoulders.

I need to make sure that
this is a successful trip.

Matt: Whoa. Look at the size
of that bird.

What is that?

Jess:
It's almost like a Canso.

They used it in World War II.

But I don't know why the heck
there'd be one

all the way up here in Fairview.

Anyways, super cool.
Should we land?

Fairview it is.

Nice Stinson.

Matt:
Yeah. It gets the job done.

We're flying in the area.

We were like kids
in a candy shop.

We noticed this from the sky

and we just had to land.

Man:
We call it a Canso in Canada.

Wow.

It was built
during World War II,

and it was actually used by
the RCAF as a patrol bomber.

Fly out over the Atlantic
and protect the convoys.

It was fully loaded.
Had depth charges,

machine guns.
Was ready to fight.

It was built in Canada
and flown by Canadians.

The endurance is huge on this,
isn't it?

During the war,
they would typically go out

for 14 to 16 hours in the air.

Holy cow.

Let's just say
you needed a porta-potty.

- Yeah.
- (laughing)

Did this plane always look
this good?

Oh, no. In 2001,

it hit hard in the lake
and actually sank

to the bottom of the lake.

- Matt: Wow.
- 90 feet of water.

- 90 feet of water it sank to?
- Yeah.

So, they floated it
to the surface.

Brought it over to the shore.
And so, we heard about it.

And there was six of us,
went out and salvaged it.

- Matt: Wow.
- Yeah.

- And restored it over how long?
- Nine years.

Do you still work on it,
or does it fly?

- Oh, it's very flyable.
- It's flyable?

Totally.

These pilots feel
about old planes

almost exactly like me
and my team feel about old cars.

We're actually in the area,

following
the Northwest Staging Route.

and looking for
old '50s and '60s vehicles.

There's a guy about 30 miles
east of here

that has a towing business,

and he has about 30 acres
of vehicles out back.

Oh, cool.

There's another guy, Mike.
West of here, I think.

He's got a grass strip
and stuff.

He's got an International truck,
but I think it's in the '50s.

- Okay.
- Thank you.

You guys are starting off
our trip quite well.

Narrator: For Jess's mission
to succeed,

the team will need to fill
the semi

with valuable
post-World War II era cars.

While Matt and Jess hit
the skies,

Dave follows
the Canso pilots' tip

to meet Mike
in an old homestead.

- Hello.

Driving around hunting for cars.

that have been sitting there

Uh, it's actually
my grandparents' house.

- Oh, okay. I see.
- Yeah.

Yep. I think everything
you see there is up for sale.

and this is a truck.
It's unique.

I believe that was
his hunting buggy

that you'd use
to go hunting with.

This is a beast on here, huh?

Just wondering what you think
he might've used that for.

I think I believe
he used that to, like,

pull moose or deer out of
the bush,

or lifting up heavy pieces
of equipment.

Dave: That makes a lot of sense.
Yeah.

interior components are there.

Yeah.

You see more vans and whatnot.

They're cute as a pin,

and they were very, very popular

in the '60s and '70s.

there's smaller versions

made for kids even today.

My mom and my uncle Ronald
used to take that thing out

all the time
when she was a kid.

Dave:
That is so cool.

A buddy of mine,
they just had a son,

and this would be a super gift
for him.

And the little guy's name
is Miles.

- Yeah. He's one years old.

He would be thrilled.

So, how did it get here?

My grandpa brought it here
from Eaglesham,

from a really small
farming town.

He was just a big collector.
He loved stuff like this.

Well, I tell you what.

I'm a collector of everything.
I'm interested in the sign,

the Kitty Cat, the Land Rover.

So, I'm thinking $500
for the sign.

Mike: For the sign.

The Kitty Cat,
I'm thinking $200 for that.

Dave:
And $1,000 for the Land Rover.

Mike:
So, that's $1,700.

So, they have to get permission
from Grandma to sell the thing.

It is a little bit sad
to see some of the stuff go,

to get a second life out there

have been flying for hours,

searching for
post-World War II era cars

along the Northwest Staging
Route.

But what should've been
a routine refuelling

deep in the Alberta wilderness
has quickly become an emergency.

Jess:
Look at that. (bleep)

We are screwed.

Damn it.

It's not what we need.

How'd you hold that
from not flipping over?

I have no idea.

Planes are replaceable;
people are not.

But it's stressful.
We're in the middle of nowhere.

There's no cell service.

But honestly,
it could've gotten a lot worse.

Matt:
Antler, man?

That's, like, a $3500 tire.

(chuckling)

No offence,
but I know you pay the bills,

but that's kind of the least
of our worries right now.

So, we got no cell service.

Where's the last settlement
you thought that we saw?

Well, Fairview is the closest.

That's got to be, like,
140 miles away.

But it's-- Yeah.

We're in a crappy ravine.

So, without getting to the top
of one of these hills,

we're probably never
going to get cellphone service.

The only thing we can do
is make a radio call.

Oh, man. That is so (bleep).

I mean, we're (bleep).

There's lots of airfields
in the area.

I feel like, I make the call.

Worst case, we have an ELT
on board and we flick that on.

Matt: I'm not gonna have the
Coast Guard-- I'm not gonna have

the frickin' search-and-rescue
come find us.

Well, what else
are we gonna do?

Hike it out.

We got the survival kit.

Where are we going to go

if you want to hike it out?

You know, the first step,
if there is an accident,

you don't leave your plane,

'cause they're going to come
looking for the plane.

along a remote riverbed,

in need of a rescue

for the team.

Hi! Goodness.
I'm happy to hear your voice.

We're currently near Deer Hill
along a riverbed,

and we have punctured our tire
with no means of fixing it.

Responder:
I will check.

Well, we're, uh, just coming up
on that area

on our way to Fairview.

We can fly over
and check it out.

Uh, they're 31-inch
tundra tires.

Responder:
Uh, check that. 30-inch tundra.

We'll get back to base

and we'll try to organize
something for you.

There's an old strip

that should be within
about a mile or two of you.

If you can make it to that,
we could try to get in there.

I was very grateful.

This is my job. I'm the gal
that takes them places,

and right now,
we're stuck in a place,

out of here.

The only thing is is that
we've got to hike a little bit.

I don't mind the hike if it
gets us out of here before dark.

Okay. Well, we've got to start
hiking that way.

I don't know how long
it's going to take us,

but there's an abandoned
airstrip at the top.

That little antler
cost us 3500 bucks.

Narrator:
As Matt and Jess begin

their long uphill journey
through the woods,

the Canso team

and their massive
World War II-era bomber

make their way toward
an abandoned airfield

in the area.

Meanwhile, Lee and Steve arrive

to salvage
the Land Rover pickup truck.

(chuckling) I love these.

This is the first pickup
I think we've seen.

- Ah. There you go.
- Oh, look.

If we get it running,

it'll save so much time
bringing out the crane.

We just, uh, drive the truck on.

This battery
looks pretty corroded.

I don't think it's going to have
any juice on it.

- How's the oil look?
- Good.

The big problem with these
is always the wiring.

The best part about
these trucks, in my opinion,

is the outside.

It just gets worse the deeper
you go into them,

and especially with the wiring.

- Try and turn it over.
- Ooh, yeah.

- (car parts clanking)
- Well, just see.

Hold on. Hold on.

I'm going to start it in gear.

- I don't think it's a surprise.
- Nothing.

It's dead.

Let's do it.

Okay. Well, what do you need
from me, bud?

Um, we need to get
another battery.

How's that battery coming, Lee?

Would've been a lot faster if
you had an organized tool box.

(laughing)

Oh, man. That's a lot of juice

(ignition turning)

I felt like I was a part
of this one now.

Narrator: Having successfully
started the Land Rover,

all Steve and Lee
have left to do

is drive it onto the semi,

collect
Dave's new prized possessions,

and head back out on the road.

Meanwhile, after a long hike
through the bush,

Matt and Jess have finally found
the Canso team

waiting for them
at the abandoned airstrip.

- How's it going?
- Good. How are you?

Jess: Goodness. Are we
ever happy to see you guys.

We heard you were in trouble,
so here we are.

We appreciate you guys
more than you know,

and it's just so nice
to see you.

Luckily, my brother Greg has
a Super Cub with the same tires.

Jess:
Oh, wow.

Oh, man. That is awesome.

If you get it back fast enough,
he won't even notice.

- (laughing)
- Goodness.

- I like this guy.
- (laughing)

Well, I don't think I've ever
been happier to see a tire.

I don't think I've been happier,
ever, to see a Canso,

especially one that came to
our rescue.

Well, these planes
were made for rescuing.

These old girls rescued
a lot of people during the war.

There's no doubt about that.

How do we even repay you

Jess:
I think we can do that.

Delivering a tire for ice cream?
That's a pretty sweet deal.

Well, we're burning daylight,
so we got to get.

Narrator: With the tire changed
and the plane refuelled,

Matt and Jess return to the air
as the sun goes down,

but an entire day lost

may leave Jess's first mission
unaccomplished.

of Jess's first time as captain,

and after a freak accident
with the plane...

Matt:
We are screwed.

...the team has only one vehicle
on the truck.

If a lead doesn't pay off soon,

the team is jeopardy of
returning home empty-handed.

Sager, look at that.

Look at that Volkswagen bus.

You can see it from over
a mile away.

Or should I say
a mile up in the sky?

Matt:
I don't know.

But we got to check it out.

Matt: We only have one vehicle
on the semi.

We're in the area
hunting old vehicles.

We were flying over,
and we couldn't help but notice

it looks like, a Volkswagen bus

in the treeline.

When it comes to vans, I mean,

it's kind of mid-tier--

It's not the super rare one

with all the windows
everyone talks about.

But it's also not the panel.

This one's, like,
a real nice medium, you know?

It's an 11-window combi.
It's a nice piece.

Herman has always been a part
of our relationship.

We've been together
for 20 years.

The man that owned the van,
George, passed away.

So, the van has always been
in the bush

as far as I've ever known.

I just love these
old hippie vans, you know?

Like, you drive down the road.
Everybody waves to each other.

Kind of like a Woodstock feel.

We always had dreams
of fixing it up,

but reality happens,
and you have kids, and--

- Yeah. Life takes over.
- Yeah.

Would selling it be something
you'd ever consider?

(sighing)

I don't know.

I might win the lottery
and be able to fix it up.

It's got some sentimental value.

Volkswagen's a great score.

If we can get this on the truck,
I'll let Jess run every mission.

I personally would love to see
Herman restored to something

and go to use.

a bit bittersweet for us,

really important for Will and I,

as long as it's kept with
the name Herman, obviously.

Narrator: While Matt and Jess
continue their hunt

to make up for lost time,

Steve and Lee arrive to liberate
Herman from the dense trees.

Lee: Oh, wow. Look at this.
Steve, you got to be kidding me.

It almost looks fake,
it's so clean.

Wow.

There's literally a window on
every corner of this vehicle.

Un-cracked, no damage.

I mean, if Matt's put his eyes
on this,

there is no margin for error
on this recovery.

This is a test to our skills,
Lee.

The thing's just covered
in windows.

Like, it's just a nightmare.

(sighing)

So, we got the trees.
We got a ditch.

So, we've got to
back the van out.

Not a scratch on it
when it leaves.

That's basically our goal.

All right. Let's get after it.

Straight back.

- Ah.

And keep going,
and a little more.

A lot of things that could go,
possibly, sideways,

and then, we've damaged
a piece of history.

- (knocking on window)
- Yeah?

Just wave to stop.

The hidden problem that I see
that could be an issue

is the tight turn
that we're going to have to do

with the truck.

You can come back six feet
at the most, and then, uh--

But you got to be careful,
'cause we got that tree

on my driver's side.

Okay. I see it.

(ignition turning)

Narrator: Steve and Lee will
then need to steer the minibus

and the power wagon in tandem,
in opposite directions,

through the tight trees,
while avoiding hard branches

on one side
and a steep ditch on the other.

I don't like it.

Hey. Hey!

Stop!

He's not even looking.

We're not even close.
What did you do?

I was backing up.

Yeah, but I was waving.
You're, like--

Now we're right close to
this tree.

Okay. The waving didn't work.

Yeah. Why don't you stay out
for now?

Yeah. We'll just do the polar
opposite of what you just did.

The more turns you make,

the greater risk you're making
to the vehicle you're towing.

And we got to do a lot of
back and forth, back and forth

kind of turn
to get out of there.

So, I'm really worried

that something could go bad
in one of those little turns.

Yeah. Yeah.

Lee:
Stop!

Okay.
Now, turn going the other way.

Yeah. Hold on.

- Uh-oh. Uh-oh.
- Halt. Wait.

Wait. Steve, wait!

Wait, wait, wait. Jeez.

She's really messing us up here,
'cause we got one branch.

It wanted to go every way

we didn't want it to go.

It just made it
just a real pain in the (bleep).

That's what I meant to say.

Narrator: Steve and Lee
are struggling to manoeuvre

a stubborn Volkswagen minibus

from its place in the woods,

where it's been resting
for decades.

What's up?

Got to turn the wheel
the opposite way

to get it away from it, okay?

- Okay.
- (ignition turning)

Uh--

Wait.

Argh.

Lee:
All right.

I think you should be able to
drive it out now.

All right. That was a little
closer than I thought it'd be

as far as damage.

- Yep.
- But, uh, we're out now.

The bus is out of the trees,

but we're not
out of the woods yet.

I got to steer this thing
right back out into the open.

Ooh.

- That was crazy!
- Oh, my God.

- Yeah.
- Yeah! Woo!

I think Matt's going to be

pretty impressed with us
this time.

Awesome.

Narrator: After two successful
rescues of vehicles

and one successful rescue
of Matt and Jess

in the Stinson,

Jess calls the team to meet
at a local car show

in the hopes of finding
more leads.

We lost a whole day
with the tire situation,

and we need to fill up the semi.

What a great way
to meet car people,

get some new leads, get some
local knowledge on the area,

than going to a car show?

Matt: I'm kind of
feeling the pressure.

We got one more day.
The truck's not loaded.

Is it scaring me?
Yeah, it scares me.

We got two cars.
We're two days down,

which means we got to double up
on our last day.

This is kind of all we got.

So, if we don't get this done,

there's a good chance
we're going to go home

with a half a load.

I think we split up.

- I like it. Perfect.
- Right now.

Dave:

Well, you can tell a lot of

war-era type stuff,

this whole area

was heavy military presence,

and you're going to want to
check that area.

I know we're looking for cars,

but it would be nice
to get a bike on the truck.

There used to be a fellow
west of here by the name of Rick

that had bikes years ago,

and I'm pretty sure
he's still around.

- Really?
- Yep.

Narrator: Following a lead
from the car show,

Steve and Lee set out
to find Rick

to see if they can add a little
something different to the load.

I've never found much success
hunting bikes,

because
there's not a lot of them

just kind of sitting anymore,
I find.

Rick:
This is where the bike is.

Wow.

- Oh.
- Steve.

What is that,
Russian or something?

I see a red star on there.

Russia got China to build them
for them is what I understand.

That is cool.

You want to push it outside
so you can see it?

Yeah, yeah.

Steve: I've never seen
this particular brand,

but I can see, definitely, the
BMW that it was based off of.

Narrator:
Built in the late '50s and '60s,

the CJ750 was based off
a Russian model

which copied
the 1938 BMW R71.

It shares many characteristics
with the BMW,

and was originally commissioned
with a sidecar

for the Chinese military.

I see it's got an Arizona plate.

and he liked this stuff, so--

It definitely feels like this
one's a little tougher-built.

Maybe for, like, war purpose,

Originally, the light sidecar

was to actually carry a gun

or somebody inside of it
while you were going.

Obviously,
you can tell we're intrigued.

Is this something that
you'd consider parting with?

Yeah. I would consider parting
with it for the right price.

what this bike is

as far as, like,
Russian-, Chinese-made,

I have to think
I couldn't go more than $3,000.

We're following
the Northwest Staging Route.

We are also hunting cars.

and tractors

and old vehicles, and--

There's a siren up there.

So, I collect everything.

Anything that
can be collectible,

whether it's stamps, coins,
artifacts, furniture.

You name it.

Like, it's a disease.

And that siren catches my eye.

That don't belong to the Legion.
That's mine.

Dave: It's nice.
Actually, it's pretty cool.

Looks like in the late '40s,
maybe early '50s.

Yeah.

It's out of place.
It's pretty darn cool.

Perhaps I can find a home for it
someplace

and somebody's gonna use
the darn thing.

Yeah. There's not much for sale
on the property.

But there's a motor home
for sale out there.

the boldest, biggest power

see them in a million years.

Well, and they're

The reason we're out there
hunting all of the cars

is so that we're in position

for when the stars align

and situations like this
present themselves.

for us to store away.

to retire at 85.

I'm sure I'd fall in love
with those cars.

I mean, they're definitely
not all complete,

but they look like projects

that could be completed,
you know?

those ones go?

on them.

but it's basically a nice shell,

Scoring the rare Mustangs

is a huge win for the team,

but as Lee and Steve arrive

for their final rescue mission
of the season,

they find these buried diamonds
are difficult to unearth.

What could Jess and Matt
have found, huh?

- What?
- Oh, no way.

- Oh, there's two.

This has got to be
a '69 Mustang.

I would say so.

Looks like a '70 up front.

(laughing)

When Matt said we were
looking at a travel trailer,

I didn't know it was
a horse trailer.

A couple of ponies in there.
Real nice ponies.

Obviously, this trailer's
going to have to get

a little bit bent, I guess.

We don't know what we're doing.

This is-- Yeah. (laughing)

Well, the trailer's pretty high.

Like, you can't really
just tow it out.

How do we get them out?
No clue.

What's your thoughts on, like,

if we just lifted the front
of the travel trailer,

and then this thing just kind of
slid out the back?

Like a dump truck.

The key word in that is "dump."

Well, we do--

We don't want to
dump the cars out.

Well, obviously,
we do it nice and slow.

That's an option.
I'm just saying. Like--

You lost me at "slow dump."

Okay.

Narrator: Steve and Lee
will use the crane

to support the weight
of the roof

and hold the outer shell
of the trailer in place.

They will then cut through
the thin aluminum walls

along the floor.

Lee can then crane the roof
and walls in one piece

up and over the trees.

Once free from their prison,

the Mustangs can then be
loaded safely onto the semi.

- Let's do it.
- Hell yeah.

Steve: So, you do crane,
and then I guess the initial

should just be setting up
the straps in the crane.

So, cutting the holes
for the loops to go in, right?

And then once that's all set up,

then I can do the cut
around the perimeter.

This is awesome. We're going to
pull two cars out of here.

Pass me those.

Okay.

I got this saw.

And I got this saw.

Both with five-amp
power batteries,

which should be sufficient
to cut this whole thing.

First risk is we cut too deep

and we actually go into
the Mustang.

(saws buzzing)

Second is that we cut too much,

and the trailer loses
its rigidity

and it falls and caves in
on top of the cars.

Now, we're in trouble.

Okay. I think we got all of them
cut through.

So, let's give it a tug.

We'll just keep that hook nice
and straight so it picks it.

- Yeah.
- Straight up.

And if it goes any direction,

that's the direction
it's going to pull it.

Well, and it'll also, like--

I don't think this thing
is going to lift that nicely.

And it might hit the car
is what you're saying?

Yeah.

Looks good.

Hold there.

There's a lot of tension on it,

so it would be leaning inside
there.

I don't know why
it's pulling the roof up.

That's 'cause it's going
like this.

It wants to bring the straps in.

But it is separating.

Honestly, that just looked like
it relieved it a bit, when you--

Yeah. We have to go past
this step.

Narrator: Steve and Lee
are attempting to free

two rare Mustangs
from inside a sealed camper.

But one wrong cut

and the entire structure could
cave in on the big-money car.

Once we get into the air,

my biggest concern
is going to become

it staying in one piece
as we clear the treetops.

'Cause this thing could just
collapse at any moment

and just rain down hellfire
on the top of these cars.
