Matt: This is what we
wake up every morning

and hope to find.

(Whirring) Oh, what's that one?!

(Creaking)

Narrator: In northern Canada,

there are thousands
of valuable classic cars

abandoned in ravines,
swamps, and barns -

a hidden goldmine,
out of reach...

Matt: I'm a treasure
hunter. That's what I do.

I hunt classic cars
that others can't get.

achieve the impossible,

Pilot Jess is our
eye in the sky.

My brother Steve's our wrench.

Dave is an expert body man.

And Lee sets cars free.

And me? I set the
mission, and I pay the bills.

And sell them
all over the world.

Matt: People say we're crazy,

but I say, "we're
just crazy enough."

Here we go again.

Matt: Let's do it!

Narrator: Matt and the team
are on a 20-hour drive to outlook

in the northern prairies
of rural saskatchewan.

But with crops in the fields

and farmers
preparing for harvest,

this year's car hunting
season is coming to a close.

On this final trip of the year,

the pressure's on to save

as many vehicles as
possible before winter;

a task made more difficult

as they're after the most
prized of all vintage cars -

the fast ones.

I've always loved fast cars,

ever since I was in high school.

My first car was a '69 nova ss.

Everybody wants a muscle car

because they were a
super desirable then

and they're even
more desirable now,

and there's a lot of great
fast cars from the fifties

to the seventies
that are still out there.

We'll find them. They're
just way harder to find.

And no better place to
start than on a racetrack.

Here he goes! There he goes!

Yeah! Let's go! Let's go!

Yeah! (Chuckling)

Guys who go fast in the
track, go fast off the track.

They have stuff
in their backyard.

Back in the seventies,
there was a fuel crisis.

The big muscle cars,
nobody wanted them.

I lived it.

'74-'75 muscle cars,

you couldn't pay
someone to take.

They were dead in the water.

But they were very
good-looking cars.

Yeah. Nowadays,

those cars are some of the
most sought after cars out there.

Muscle cars have never been
so strong and never been so rare.

So, that's what we're after.
We're hunting fast cars.

This is the muscle
group that's here.

Look at the crowd.

I want you to talk
to some locals

to see how much
we can find. Okay?

People in the country
have always loved

their local racetracks.

It's like a gathering,
meeting place.

Our goal is to search around it

for all these old race and
speed cars that still exist.

You wouldn't happen to know
of any old racetracks in the area,

would you? Woman: Sure do.

I used to race in
sunningdale and kindersley.

There is a fellow
around named delmer,

he used to race and
he has an old duster.

There's a '76 cobra ii mustang

that we restored
about 30 years ago.

You got any more of those?

I don't have...
No, that's only one.

They're getting harder to find.

The car crushers and
that got 'em in the eighties.

Friend of mine knows
this guy, his father

and his three sons used to race.

Last name was mays, I think.

Lee: Mays.

Yeah, yeah. Lee: Okay.

Well, we'll dig into it.

Matt: I think we
should make a plan.

Got a map here.

So, right about here is
outlook. That's what we are.

I chatted with a lovely couple

and they told me that
there's a few old racetracks -

sunningdale and kindersley.

They're no longer in operation,

but they said that we might find
some good leads around there.

So, it's all pretty
much in the northwest.

I think we're on
the right track.

Dave? Yeah.

You seem pretty stoked
about that delmer lead.

Yeah, I know a few guys
in that area; I'll find him.

Way I see it is this is
the start line to our race,

our race to fill that
truck in three days.

Let's go find those damn cars.

With a plan, the team
on the ground heads out

to follow up leads,

while Jess and Matt
are flying northwest

to scour regions near
the old racetracks.

I remember, when I
was a kid, I used to race;

it was the highlight of my week.

The true racers never
die though, right?

Those are the guys
we're after now.

Hey, what's this up
the right side here?

Can you roll right?

Oh, yeah. That's not usual.

That's got to be European
for sure. Can we land?

Yeah, that hill right
there looks pretty good.

Landing near the old
racetrack in sunningdale,

for Jess and Matt,
the hunt is on.

All right, let's go see
who owns the place.

Spotting a plane
on his property,

landowner Lance is
quick to investigate.

Lance: Hello. What's going on?

Matt saw a little thing
out of the corner of his eye,

parked on your yard.

1972 BMW 2002.

Do you want to
take a look at it?

Matt: There it is.

Jess: Matt, look at it.

Matt: It's sweet.

Well, it's got to side-draft
weber carburetors on it.

That wasn't stock, was it?

No, that wasn't.

I also had another
BMW that I had for racing.

And when it died
a violent death,

the carburetors were
contributed to this car.

So, you used to race. Yeah.

This thing would haul.

I mean, I love this car.

Would you ever
consider selling 'er?

This one here, I have a
real emotional attachment to.

So, this one, no.

I can respect that.

I do have something in the barn

you might be
interested in looking at.

I mean, if it's
got four wheels...

Mm-hmm. I'm all over it.

Another BMW 2002.

Oh, that's nice.

Narrator: In the sixties,

the 2002 series put BMW
on the map in North America.

This looks like a boxy little
sedan, but make no mistake,

the 2002 is a sports car.

It was surprisingly
fast and very nimble,

a real enthusiast's car.

Matt: Tii.

That was touring
international injection, yeah?

That's right. Matt: Rare.

No carburetors,
direct injection -

doesn't get much
better than that, Jess.

The tii is a very, very
rare version of the 2002.

Lance: I had
bought it '98 or '99,

and the idea was
it was going to be

my retirement project to fix it.

I mean, it's a lovely car, but
the last one wasn't for sale.

So, is this one for sale?

Yes, I would like
somebody to get it

that's actually
going to restore it.

No question there.

If you're into restoring a BMW,

2002 tii is a pretty
iconic one to have.

Matt: The tii is one
of the most affordable

and fun to drive
classic cars of all time.

So, have you ever given
thought to the number?

I would like to
get $5000 out of it.

$5000? Lance: Yeah.

You know, usually, I would
spend the next half an hour

going back and forth with you.

But this one, I can't
disagree with you.

Following up on
the tip from the track,

Dave is heading 150
kilometres northwest

to meet retired racer delmer
to check out his old duster.

Take it you were
down at outlook.

Yes. That was a very nice track.

We had our invitational
one year down at Kincaid.

Out of five races,

I won three and
came in second place,

and one was the feature race;
I gave home with the trophy.

That was the highlight
of my life, that one.

That's incredible.

But you still remember it.

Oh, you never
some of those things.

That is really cool.

It's adrenaline,
pure adrenaline.

There's times you don't
care if you live or die,

in some of those feature
races: You have to win.

As Dave goes on a
walk down memory Lane,

Lee and Steve arrive at Lance's

to load the BMW - the
first car of this final trip.

Lee: Wow, crazy.

This is not a car
you'd find here.

Didn't you have

Yeah, I used to race, like,

a much junkier
version of this car.

Cool.

Steve: The more
rougher racing, you know,

those cars, they go like
stink. It was a blast to drive it.

But for every one
hour on the track,

I spent ten hours in the shop.

There's always
something in the way.

Can't ever be simple for us. No.

As they clear a
path out of the barn,

the floor reveals
a bigger problem.

We're going to bottom
out, I'm calling it right now.

Ugh! I'm almost going
to puke, I'm not kidding.

the front wheels here,

that's the problem. It's
more of a slide action.

Lee: Yeah, we got no turn.

Just a lot of grinding
from underneath the car.

(Coughing) Steve,

I've got ten minutes
left inside this thing

before I'm done, okay? Lifeless.

I'm trying. Try harder.

This is some of my best work.

Lee: Do what you have
to do to get us out of here.

The exhaust is catching on
the threshold of the doorway,

so I've got to turn the truck
around and use the gin pole

to lift the car up first,

and then turn it back
around to use the front winch

to pull it straight
out of the barn.

I don't like it because i'm
going to be stuck in here.

Here, I'll give you
a little bit of air.

Oh... sweet nectar.

(Laughing)

When the door's open,
it's blowing all this (bleep)

All over the car inside here.

which has been home
to mice for two decades...

Ugh! Steve, I'm starting
to get loopy in here.

The muffler is just hanging
down enough to catch it.

Just going to try to
prop the old girl up.

While Steve's trying
to prevent the exhaust

from getting ripped
off crossing the hump.

Lee: Yeah, I don't care.

First time I saw Lee,

Narrator: Retired racer delmar
is showing Dave his old car,

but it seems to hold
more than just memories.

Dave: Holy...

Unbelievable. That
tree is fantastic.

I didn't think it was that
long that I've been racin'.

Unfortunately, this car is
just a little bit further gone

than I thought, but
man, what a good story.

Too bad. But you know what?

He's a racer; He'll
know some racers.

Maybe we can
get a lead from him.

The only guy I can think of
is Stan down the road here,

and he might have a
few left there in the bush.

Yeah, there's a pretty sweet car

right through those
cariganas over there.

That's a cobra ii.

It's a '77. I'm not
a big fan of these.

In the seventies, with
the fuel crisis and whatnot,

the government introduced
the emission controls

and the companies
detuned all their cars.

It looks tough,

but it's definitely for
show, not for power.

They're harder to find,
but it still is a weeny car.

This car was the
answer to the fuel crisis.

It was a lucky
time that Ford had.

It's the most compact
mustang, I think, they ever built.

I mean, if it's a v8,
it's even a better car.

These seventies
mustangs were not loved,

and because they weren't
loved, they were ditched,

because of that, there
isn't many around.

And now, they're
coming back strong,

they're making
new parts for them,

and no one's got one to build.

There's where we come in.

Oh, hey, buddy, I got
to give you a high five!

That's a sweet-looking motor.

Dave: Okay, so you
changed my mind a little.

The fact that it's a v8 cobra
makes the big difference.

For the right price,

is basically the same
thing as a Chevy impala,

just way less trim.

But you're halfway through it,

so I'm feeling like the odds

If this '69 beaumont is
as good as Gus says,

it's a great buy.

Back in the 60s there were
tariffs on us muscle cars.

Gm set up a plant in
Canada to build basically

a replica of a chevelle,
you know, put a few little

tweaks and odds and ends
on it and call it a beaumont.

They're pretty rare. You
don't see too many beaumonts

out here in saskatchewan.

and the linkage that puts
it into four-wheel drive

is quite broken or disconnected,

which means we
only got two wheels,

sitting here spinning mud

and we're not moving.

Hello.

Following up on Jess' lead
on the famous race family,

Matt and Dave are
meeting Mick maze

and his cousin Norman.

So, you guys are the descendants
of the maze brothers, then?

Yes, we are. Our fathers
became the famous racers,

I guess you'd want to say.

When would they
would have raced?

Like, what would be their time?

Well, it was right after
the war, so late 40s,

you know, and into
the early 50s probably.

Mick's dad, uncle Gerald,
he was a mechanic in the war.

Fixed tanks and
motorcycles, whatever.

Norman: They'd come back from
the war and had an interest in speed.

My grandfather and his
brother were both war heroes.

My great uncle is the
one that really inspired me

at a young age. He's
an old spitfire flying ace.

He'd flown this
thousand-plus horsepower

Merlin engine spitfire,
and he came back,

and it was like,
"well, now what?"

To the day he died,
he had probably 15 of

the fastest
European sports cars,

'cause he fell in love with
them while he was over there,

and that need for speed,

it just never really
leaves you, right?

No.

So, what were they racing?

Model t, because
by the end of the war,

there was literally millions
of these cars around,

and they were cheap,
almost worthless,

so you could buy
them for a song.

And, so, the race
industry started.

It's just too bad
none of them made it.

Like, they're so old and
most of them are destroyed.

I do have one. It's in the...
Over by the quonset there.

The motor is a '16 and I
think the frame is a 1918.

His dad's race car.

No way! That's so awesome!

Any chance that we
could see that car?

My holy grail is a car
that hasn't been touched

since the day it was parked.

That's a true untouched story.

When you walk into the barn,
you know that there's no way

that that car has been touched
since the owner parked it.

the family kept

100-year old race cars.

It kills me that no one else

Like, I think we're
probably the first people

outside of their family
that's heard that story.

This car has over 100
years of automotive history,

60 plus of racing history.

The 1908 model t is the model
that put the world on wheels.

It, in one day, erased
the need for a horse.

It allowed everything
to speed up,

towns to be further
apart, people to commute,

mass production
of cars started then.

The model t changed the world,

and that's why 15
million were made.

That's a huge
number back in 1908.

This is where it began.
There is no before.

You want to race a
horse? That's before.

We will never see a
car like this ever again.

I'm with you, pal. I
think we have to take

a different
direction on this car.

The team may be going down
another road with the model t.

But the power wagon's broken
four-wheel drive linkage means

the beaumont's going no where.

I think we use these
pads one more time

and we might get lucky.

We're hopefully going to get
the wheels on top of the mats,

get some momentum, and
then get ourselves out of the hole.

interest in our history.

elevated in our minds

about the importance of this.
