but we all know how
hard they're to find.

Jess: Hello? Anyone here?

Matt: Holy cow.

I'm Brooke. And I'm Chloe.

Yeah, we actually
have a '20s essex.

Matt: Oh, really?

Jess: And how
did you acquire it?

With money.

With money?

Steve: Chill out
and let's actually...

Dave: No! You guys
chill out too (bleep) Much.

Lee: Guys, guys,

Narrator: In northern Canada,

there are thousands
of valuable classic cars

abandoned in ravines,
swamps, and barns -

a hidden goldmine,
out of reach...

Matt: I'm a treasure
hunter. That's what I do.

I hunt classic cars
that others can't get.

Pilot Jess is our
eye in the sky.

My brother Steve's our wrench.

Dave is an expert body man.

And Lee sets cars free.

And me? I set the
mission, and I pay the bills.

They rescue cars that
were lost to history...

And sell them
all over the world.

Matt: People say we're crazy,

but I say, "we're
just crazy enough."

Narrator: Matt and his team
have travelled 1700 kilometres

to the far reaches
of saskatchewan,

hunting for classic cars.

Their mission - to save
pre-war era vehicles

that are forgotten in the north.

We're up here hunting
pre-war era cars

because my clients are
starved for good projects.

Pre-world war ii cars,
they're like a multi-tool.

You can choose a plethora
of things to do with it.

You can go rat rod.

You can go big
motor, fast, slow.

You could race them.
You can chop them.

You can do hundreds
of different variations.

Some of these cars are
pushing 100 years old.

I know they're out there

and we got to save
them before they're gone.

The team arrives in
northern saskatchewan

in the dead of night
and set up camp.

After a short sleep,

they study a 70-year-old
map of railway lines

that were ripped
out after world war ii.

This is the kind of stuff
you can't get access to.

Now, we have
the only eyes on it.

They believe it provides a clue

to finding long-lost
classic cars.

Matt: Jess came across this
awesome map in an antique shop.

It's one of a kind,

and it's information you can't
find anywhere on the web.

Jess: These are all railways

and all little towns
among these railways.

It's crazy how many towns were
created among those railways.

Matt: The map shows where people
would have lived in the pre-war era.

That's exactly
where we got to go.

It's exactly where the
cars are going to be.

We're going to fly
those ghost railways,

we're going to find
those old towns,

and we're going to track
down where those cars still are.

Giddy up! Let's go!

While Jess and Matt fly the
rail lines in search of leads,

the rest of the team
follow up on a classic truck

that was spotted from the air.

You don't just go on someone's
property and look for a truck.

We're going to find the owner,
make sure it's even there,

and, hopefully, even buy it.

(Knocking)

Hey. How's it going? Good.

My name's Steve. I'm Daniel.

Me, my brother and
a couple other people

are just in the area,
looking for cars.

We had noticed from up
on the ravine over there

that you had a truck.

Is that close to you at all or
are you willing to part with it?

It's been there for years, so it
really has no meaning to me.

Yeah? What would
you want for it?

Do you mind if I just take my
truck up there and have a look?

Yeah, just be careful
as you go up there.

If you need me to
help pull you out,

it's going to cost
you extra. All right.

I'm joining the guys

because we're going to
go take a look at the truck

that they found to see if
it's actually worth saving.

I've got about 45 years of
my own body shop experience

and usually, the first
time I look at a vehicle,

I know if it's worth it or not.

Lee: Is that it?

Steve: That's it.

Lee: Holy (bleep)

Yeah, no kidding, holy (bleep).

It's like on top of a
pyramid or some darn thing.

This is crazy. (Chuckling)

I swear, that thing is up
about 250 feet up there.

It's high. It's scary high.

Steve: Yahoo!

(Engine revving)

(Chuckling)

Dave: Right on!

Right here. That's
good, guys. Holy (bleep).

Hey, this is a lot
nicer than I thought.

Yeah.

Dave: It's a Mercury.

Lee: Like nothing's
been shot up or anything.

No, it's good.

It looks like it's
got a motor in it.

Lee: Really?

Here we go.

Dave: God, it's complete, too.

Steve: Wow!

Dave: That is amazing.

It's incredible that the
motor and everything is intact

and the engine bay, nothing's
been touched or taken off.

Yeah, it looks like a 292.
I mean, it's the later years.

So, like, the
hot-rodders love them.

It's worth $750 all
day just sitting there.

It's actually in
really good shape.

Yeah, this damn thing is wild.

Yeah, but look at it,

it's got fantastic
cap, fantastic door.

The truck is actually
a 1948 Mercury.

It was a work truck and
that's what they were built for.

Whoever owned it
definitely took care of it,

and that's unusual
because they got banged up.

There's a lot of people
out there and a lot of folks

who would restore it
for their businesses.

Somebody is going to be
really happy with this truck.

The tires missing, so
obviously had a tire problem.

There is no rust on this baby.

It's a very good find, guys.

It's a great truck.

Now, how the hell are we
going to get it out of here?

(Sighing) My theory is,

do we attach the line
to the Mercury truck?

We take that line, we wrap
it around the snatch block.

The snatch block is
attached to the tree,

then the line continues
on down the hill

and is attached to
the power wagon.

It acts as a counterweight
to control the truck

as we drive up and the
Mercury comes down.

This is like 200 feet

and I've got like 100
feet of winch cable,

and I don't have enough
straps even to, like,

Daisy chain all the way down.

But you've got to change it up

a couple of times
before we go down.

When we go down
the hill, stop and rerig?

Yep.

But now you're
stopping and, like,

I just think there's
too many variables.

Yeah, just scares me,
the idea of being on the hill

with this truck and those
trees being our anchor.

I think it's a little too
overly complicated,

this plan that Dave's got.

So, what's the
other options then?

Well, it looks like
it's going to roll.

There's no breaks, but
it can still go into gear.

I just take my time and
I just go down the hill.

You're going to drive this truck
down that hill with no brakes?

Yeah.

I want to see you after today.

Steve is saying he'd
like to go into the truck

and ride her down.

Well, once he kills himself,

how am I going to
explain that to his brother?

You know? This is not
the way we're going to do it.

If the thing kicks out sideways,
you're flipping down the hill.

I'll freewheel. I'll
put it in neutral.

Steve's insane.
He's lost his mind.

It's not worth risking
your life for that truck.

We're thinking way
too hard into this.

We've got a power
wagon. It's got a winch.

Let's just winch
it down the hill

with as much straps as we have.

We've got three different ideas.

I know my plan is going to work,

and we're going to get
everybody down the hill safe

and we're going to get that
vehicle down the hill safe.

Either way, I got to
put this tire back on.

Dave: Yes, you do.

And you've got to figure out
if you even have the straps.

So, why don't I
do the tire? Okay.

And you guys dig up some straps.

Narrator: While the guys
are dealing with the truck,

Jess and Matt are flying high

above the ghost railroad tracks,

hoping to spot something good.

Matt: So, you can
see these old railways,

they almost look like
the backbone of the world.

Well, it's crazy how,

like, at subsections,
you could see it

and then it just, like, ends.

Like, it's literally
a ghost railway.

What's that over there?

Matt: There looks
like an old school.

Jess: Yeah, but look at it,

there's a whole bunch
of like equipment, cars.

Yeah. It looks like a
storage yard or something,

and someone's taking
over the old school site.

Maybe land right here
and we'll check it out.

I can't land there, I'm sorry.

Matt: You can't land there?

Well, look at it,
Matt. It's short,

power lines and the crop's long.

Okay, okay, fine.
Let's beeline it back

and we'll head
out on the ground.

Okay, sounds good.

Steve: I kind of lost
you at counterweight.

Lee: Counterweight, what is
it going around? The trees?

Dave: A tree.

We've been on
this hill for hours

and we're still arguing how are
we going to get this truck down.

This hill is 220 feet,
and that's a big bank.

I don't know if we
have enough straps.

Yeah, we got enough
straps here, guys,

because we're going
to do it a couple of times.

We're going to hook
up, release, hook up.

I just don't get this whole
re-rigging, rigging, you know?

This plan is getting more
complicated by the minute.

Honestly, Dave, with the
amount of straps that we have,

a potential gold
mine from the sky,

but the guys have run
into some serious trouble

while trying to rescue
an old farming truck.

Truck's a standard,
I left it in gear.

Like, the motor, over the
years, lost compression

and just couldn't hold it,

and it just ran the
motor down the hill.

Well, it looks like
we're buying this truck,

whether we like it or not.

Boys, I think we lucked out.

Oh, yeah!

That bumper saved it.

I think we found out how
we're going to be doing

more hill extractions.

The guys are joking
around and whatnot.

But you know what? That
thing could have rolled.

It could have been
just a pile of junk.

We're feeling very lucky
that the truck is down safely.

While the guys have
ultimately been successful

with the Mercury truck,

Matt and Jess are driving

to the school building
they spotted from the sky.

Anyone here?

Matt: Wow, look at
it, it's like a hang out.

Jess: Yeah, with
all the couches.

Matt: Pool table.

What is in there?

Oh, Jess, a baby snake.

Why are there dead
creatures in formaldehyde?

Matt: It's a really

and everybody walked

found the front office.

It's got to be 100 lockers.

Goes to the other end and
then both sides of the other end.

Then, we walked into the gym.

Holy cow.

Jess: You even got
the decorations up still.

Matt: So cool!

Jess: Wow.

Matt: You must have some
great memories in here,

like school dances.

Oh yeah, for sure.

I've become the
principal. (Laughing)

You showed them, eh?

And I was in the office quite
a few times as a student, so...

Oh, I love that.
And look at this.

What have we got here?

That's a '57 two-door.

Mark: And the other
one's a '57 continental.

And then, the other
ones a '57 four-door.

That's the one for sale.

It's got a great patina. I
love that white and blue.

It was super common
colour of the day.

The '57 Chevy is
such a classic car.

'57 is the most
desirable of the 5-6-7 era

because it has the wings.

It was the first year
in the space race era.

It's a nice big car.

You can put your family in it,

but also full-frame, so it
could take big horsepower.

They used them for drag racing.
They used them from cruising.

They're just a great car.

I just love these '57s.

They've got those big
old tridents on the hood

and big bumperettes.

Mark: Yep.

Matt: Big wings at the back.

The interior is in great
shape. Yeah, it's a cool ride.

But, you know, it
is a little rougher.

It's got a little
bit of rust in it.

What are you
thinking price-wise?

Well, we were trying to
hold pretty fast at three.

Three grand.

Motor? No motor?

No motor. No motor.

No tranny. Jeez.

No engine - that
brings the price down.

I can't pay three
grand for this.

I don't want to cut
you at the knees,

but I'd have to be closer to,

you know, $1400-$1500.

How about like two grand?

Two grand?

This car is going to sell

because of the
patina and the colour.

You can't reproduce these
burnt little top lines, you know.

It's one of a kind.

50-plus years of wear and tear.

these crazy moments.

There's an old guy up by
spirit wood named Glenn

that might have an old
Plymouth up there, so...

I think he lived near an old
abandoned schoolhouse somewhere.

a great place to start

when we're car searching
from ground zero -

they have connections,

they know where all
the good old stuff is,

and they've been in
this area for a long time.

There's a crew of
us hunting old cars.

About 20 miles south of here.

The guy's name is Hugh,
if you want to look him up.

and it was about twenty
miles south from here.

apparently, lives
near a schoolhouse.

Steve: My buddy
and I were just driving

and I wanted to settle a
bet with him that this was a...

Well, an old rail yard.

Man: It's the
train station, yep.

Lee: What do you use it for?

Man cave.

I put a wood Clay oven in it.

Steve: Wow.

Actually, had the Clay
oven before the station

and I was looking for
somewhere to put it.

(Both laughing)

And I thought, "hey,
that might work."

It's an old railway station.

There probably was a town
here. This is a great place to stop,

see if there's some cars.

You guys look like you're
a long way from home.

Oh, the b. C. Plates? Yeah.

(Both chuckling)

Yeah, we're just out
for a day trip, you know,

looking for cars,

pre-war cars, you
know, '30s, '40s.

I got a couple. Most
of them in their 50s,

but I had a couple
that are older than '40.

Really? Oh, really? Okay.

I don't know if I want
to sell them or not,

but you can have a
look at them if you want.

Steve: You look
like a buick guy.

Grant: All buicks, except
for the one in the back corner.

This one's a buick McLaughlin.

It's a 1936. There was
only 50 of them ever built.

Steve: Wow.

Grant: Rumble seat.

Steve: Yeah. Grant:
Convertible top.

It's a nice car.
It's all together.

It's been well kept.

I mean, this is
exactly what we want.

It's a pre-war car.

And when this car
was built, buick was,

you know, at the
top of their game.

Buick was the luxury brand.

It was high quality
and high price.

This is a convertible.

This is the most limited
car they would have made,

and therefore,
it's the rarest car.

This is a big find out
here in the prairies.

If we can get this car out
of here and make a deal,

that would be amazing.

Now, I have to ask,
what do you want for it?

Even the way it is,
I wouldn't take less

team are hunting for cars

in a remote area
of saskatchewan.

So, far, they've rescued
a 1948 Mercury truck

and bought a 1957 Chevy 150.

And now, Steve and Lee
are hoping to make a deal

on an extremely rare 1936 buick.

What do you want for it?

Grant: Even the way it is,

I wouldn't take less than
twenty-five, probably.

Would you be able to go for ten?

Ten grand is a lot to offer,

but we're going for it.

I almost paid that
for it 20 years ago,

and I imagine it's getting
more rare by the year.

It's a nice offer, but I'd
stick closer to the twenty-five.

Steve: That's too high for us.

Ten grand is like a
really generous offer,

but it's not even close
to what Grant wants for it.

This is a rare car.
He knows it's rare.

It's obviously special to him.

I don't even think he
really wants to sell it.

He's just going for
a ridiculous price

and seeing what he can fetch.

Narrator: After picking up
leads from the antique dealer,

Jess calls the team
to share her news.

Jess: I've got some good
news for the whole team.

Do you remember when Mark
told us that there was a gentleman

named Glenn that owned a
Plymouth near the schoolhouse?

Yeah.

Well, I was
chatting with Billy -

really kind gentleman that
owns the antique store -

he's got a friend
at the municipality

who has information
on old schoolhouses.

Very cool.

So, he sent me this picture

and it's old
schoolhouses in the area.

Matt: Oh, cool.
Jess: From that...

Matt: Look at the detail, eh?

We could definitely use
this piece of information

and hopefully find
Glenn a lot easier.

Matt: Great find by Jess.

This old directory shows us

where all the old
one-room schools would be.

So, now, we can focus
our hunt on those areas

and hopefully find
that old Plymouth

that Mark was telling
us about in that school.

Dave: I love cars from the 30s.

We want to see those
pre-war cars on the semi.

Billy also told me

there was a Datsun
owned by a Hugh

that's south about
20 miles from here.

Oh no.

I know where this is going.

I don't mind Datsun,

as long as it's
the right Datsun.

They made a lot
of different datsuns.

So, we're having a
conversation about a Datsun.

We're looking for '30s cars
and we're talking datsuns.

As a body man, I do
prefer the 30s cars.

The quality of the
metal is excellent -

it's thick, you
can work with it,

you can weld it, you can
form it, you can bend it.

After the word, the Japanese
cars came into the market

and the quality of
the metal wasn't there.

If you had to do any welding,
you'd burn holes through it.

You had to replace
it. You can't fix it.

Well, Dave, I'm all believer
here for the pre-war cars,

but we all know how
hard they are to find.

Sometimes our best finds,

honestly, come
from the unexpected.

So, I understand that
Dave's a little bit hesitant,

but we honestly don't know
where this is going to lead us.

But you never know
where it could lead us, Dave;

you of all people know this.

Dave does this for a living.

He knows that following
these unexpected leads

could lead us to
something great.

For myself, I was pretty
stoked on the '30s and stuff,

and that's... the attitude in me
is just burning away real quick.

Narrator: So, far, the team have
scored a vintage truck and a 150,

but they're not the pre-war
cars that they're really after.

Billy also told me there
was a Datsun south,

about 20 miles from here.

And now, a lead on a
Datsun is dividing the team.

I was pretty stoked
on the '30s and stuff,

and that's... the attitude in me
is just burning away real quick.

The Datsun is not what
it came for, definitely not.

I know that Matt has a
market for this kind of car,

but I came for the 30s to the
40s, that's what I'm here for.

We might have found one, though.

Everything is not lost.

We've got this really
great schoolhouse lead.

We follow up on
that and, apparently,

there's a '30s Plymouth there.

I just got a really good
lead on this Plymouth -

a pre-war vehicle.

This is exactly what we need.

I feel like that's our
only lead right now

for an early '30s car.

Lee: Well, when we were
down at Grant's place,

he gave us a lead of a family

that might have some
older cars, as well.

So, me and Steve,
maybe we'll look into that.

Dave, why don't you go
check on the schoolhouse lead?

I'm on your side, Dave.

I just want to make sure
we're in the right area, right?

I know. I'm just frustrated,
buddy. But, yeah.

And then, Matt and I,

we just hop on the plane
and go find the Datsun.

to try to find those
elusive pre-war cars

from the '20s and '30s.

Steve and Lee have
driven 200 kilometres north,

following up on a
lead on an old car

that might be hiding
out on a farmer's land.

Steve: Hello there.

This is obviously
your guys' farm here.

It's actually our
grandfather's farm.

We're the third generation.

Steve: Wow. Brooke: Yeah.

Servicing our bailers
up for hay-ing time?

Do you guys drive the
tractors and everything, as well?

We do. Yeah.

It's a far distance.

Lee: It might be tight with
all four of us in the cab,

so, Steve, why don't
you ride in the back?

our grandpa because it's his car.

Brooke got it right;
It's a 1928 essex.

It's unique.

Different than the classics
- the fords, the chevys.

It's a wood car,
right? Lee: Yeah.

Steve: Just the fact
that the car is still here

and hasn't rotted with the wood,

it's a good sign.

My great grandfather
was a doctor

and he had a '28 essex
sedan, just like this one.

I can imagine him driving
around in it in that era,

and it's always kind
of had a nostalgic spark

of maybe one day
finding the one that he had.

But I'll, you know,
settle for this one.

You have all four fenders
tied into the running boards.

You never get that.

The fact that the
windshield liner is in here

and the visor because, like,
this is a specific-sized car;

like you're not going
to be able to just put

any kind of thing on here.

And like, lots of space in

This spot, it's got

My new buddy Billy from the
antique store was very kind

and called the owner of
the Datsun ahead of time

to give him a warning
that we were on our way.

Yeah, he said about
20 miles from him,

and that's where
we are right now.

Matt: It's got to be 10-15
cars, trucks down there.

Looks like '40s,
'50s, maybe little '60s.

That's a Datsun.

Jess: Sweet. Well, let's
land and check it out.

What's the story
on this one, Hugh.

It came to the end
of its useful life.

Jess: And how
did you acquire it?

With money.

With money, as
every good car comes.

Hugh: When the owner
parked it, he was finished with it.

Matt: I like how it hasn't
been touched inside.

There's a little rust. The
floor has got a hole in it.

But it's still got the tranny
and the original rally gages.

It's actually in
really good shape.

This car, in its day, was
one of Japan's pride and joys

for the rally scene. It
used to be a race car.

So, it's worth restoring 100%.

Datsuns are great and to boot,

the 510 model and two-door,

can't get better
than that, really.

Datsun hadn't really made
landfall on North America

in a big way until
the Datsun 510.

So, it really took
those producers,

like Chevy and Ford by surprise,

when this little Datsun
came out of nowhere.

Nimble, handled great,

didn't break-out in corners
because it was light,

well-balanced, affordable.

Why wouldn't you buy it?

Hell, my dad had
one in high school.

would you want for it?

It's early '30s Plymouth coupe.

Look at this thing
- suicide doors...

frickin' rumble seat in it. Wow!

The running boards are
here, the Fender's here,

the gauges for Pete's
sake are still in here.

They're in great shape.

No rust to speak of at all.

We're looking at a 1933
Plymouth five-window coupe.

They're actually hard to find.
It's gorgeous car all around.

It may appear to look rough,

but when you get close to it,

there's no rust
on the bottom end.

Our climate up here,

there isn't quite as much
humidity as it is elsewhere.

The cars just don't rust away.

The fenders, the back fenders
themselves, are very, very rare;

beautiful shape,
workable. It's a winner.

This is the car that
we've been looking for.

I got to ask you, my friend,
what are you thinking on that?

Because definitely,

that's what we're in
the market for right now.

Yeah. Got to get
up seven or eight.

this hood underneath.

some blocks of wood

on top of the hood and
the car on top of that,

tie it down, use it as a sled.

Lee: Well, the logs are there
to, like, basically pinch the frame

because metal on metal skids.

So, the wood basically
allows the frame

and the hood to not move around.

We're gonna
strap it all together

and make it one solid unit.

Do you want it on the steering
or you want it on the axle?

Anywhere where
it's going to hang on.

Aren't you worried
the front of the hood's

going to steer its way out?

I don't think so.

Where we position
the log is crucial.

If we're too far forward, then
it's going to want to dig in.

If we're too far back,

the hood's going to
want to track left or right

and it's going to steer
the car into the trees.

Right in the middle
or the perfect spot,

it's going to track all the
way out, nice and straight.

The further you
have the hood forward

and the point of where the
frame is touching the hood,

it's going to want to spin.

It's like sitting on the
back of a kneeboard

and hoping it goes straight.
