It's a very dry heat.

see, it's just dry.

[Tray] This is insane.

Knowing that this place
has already taken out

two other survivalists,
two other survivalists,

it's pretty intimidating.

This place is gonna
be absolute hell.

[narrator] Canon del
Diablo, or Devil's Canyon,

is a desolate hellscape
in Baja, Mexico,

that's already proven
itself as unsurvivable.

[Laurae] Holy piss,
that sand is hot.

- [Chris] It's hell on earth.
- [sighs deeply]

[coyote howling]

[Chris] Oh, man, that
wind is whipping right up.

[narrator] Pushing
previous survivalists

to their breaking point...
to their breaking point...

by day eight.

[Laurae] They brought
us to the desert to die.

[narrator] Now, in
this region of extremes,

from bone-chilling,
windy, 40-degree nights,

to scorching
triple-digit midday heat,

and record-setting
surface temperatures

that clear 170 degrees,

two more survivalists
will attempt to succeed

where no one else has.

[Tray] The heat's gonna
just bake these feet, I know it.

But I know I can do this.

21 day or bust.

Ain't nothing taking
me out but a med tap.

[Amy] It's the valley of death.

This environment already
took two people out.

But it's not taking me out.

These notes are gonna

in hopes that I might

By the time I get out there.

My friends, my family, they
think that I'm nuts for doing this.

But as a survivalist,

I've always wanted
to take on the desert,

I sure never thought I'd
be doing it without clothes.

Naked in the desert.

This is a whole new
challenge altogether.

[Amy] I have been terrified
of the desert my entire life.

But I never go
anywhere unprepared.

I've done enough research.

I hope you did me well.

Now I'm ready to
dance with the devil.

thorns right away.

[Tray] Oh, man.

I sure hope my partner

the way all these
prickly pricks are.

You know, there has been
another challenge here

and neither one of them made it.

I think I've done

got a fire started here.

[narrator] To aid their attempt

to finally conquer
Canon del Diablo,

Amy and Tray
receive a fire starter.

Additionally, each survivalist

has chosen to bring
one survival item.

[Tray] I have got my knife.

[Amy] Excellent.

I brought duct tape.

Duct tape?

With my duct tape,
we can protect our feet.

[laughs]

[Tray] Not having a pot
could be a bit of a problem.

I would like to be
able to have water

rather than duct tape.

And I have the map.

The map!

All right.

Looks like we are right here.

So, I see water here.

[Amy] Water by mountain lions.

That looks fun.

- It's intimidating, yes.
- It is.

But there's no water
anywhere that I can see.

- So, if we've got water...
- Same.

...let's hit it.

All right, so... off we go.

- Let's do it.
- Let's rock and roll.

[Tray] 21 days in
Mexico, let's get this done!

[roaring] Yeah!

[Amy exclaiming]

This ground is getting hot.

Hot, hot, hot.

[Tray] It is... So, I guess
coming from up north,

you're not doing a whole
lot of barefoot hiking, are ya?

[Amy] Actually,
I'm a barefoot girl.

- Awesome.
- So I have really calloused feet.

I thought that that would
give me an advantage.

- [chuckles]
- I am the same.

[Amy] Okay, what
are your skills?

[Tray] I can do a friction fire.

- Nice.
- I can build shelters.

But I'm actually a caver.

[Amy] Oh, really?

I spend a lot of time in caves.

My friends call me Traygladyte,

because a troglodyte is
a cave-dwelling human.

And I've been caving
for about 30 years now.

One of my closest
brushes with death was

being trapped in a cave

unexpectedly seven hours
from the nearest entrance.

And all of a sudden I
see water rushing in.

We had no idea if we
were gonna live or die.

Being trapped in a
cave for 39 hours,

you've gotta be patient,

and you can't have
'no' in your heart,

or you will not survive.

Since then, I've been
pushing myself and studying

and wanting to get
back to primitive man.

We have fire.

Part of primitive
survival, I think,

is keeping a positive mindset.

And getting trapped in
a cave, I survived that.

I know I can do this.

I just gotta keep telling myself

anytime [bleep] gets real,
anytime [bleep] gets real,

"Suck it up, buttercup."

Suck it up, buttercup. [laughs]

That's gonna be the new thing.

[both laugh]

So, uh, got any kids?

I do, I have two adult kids.

And they have kids.

[Tray] Wow, I'd
have never guessed.

A lot of people
know the word MILF,

but I would describe
myself as a GILF.

I'm still young,
I'm still vibrant...

but I have grandkids.

I wanna swing higher.

[Amy] I had children
at a young age,

and once they were 18,

they started having
grandbabies for me.

These littles are gonna
come with Grandma

and we're going on an adventure.

Being a grandma, I get to
adventure with my grandkids.

We're gonna build a shelter.

[Amy] I would describe
myself as an adventurist,

I love the outdoors.

Growing up, I lived in the
Northwoods of Wisconsin.

My backyard was river streams.

If we were not
successful in hunting,

There was no food on the table.

Did you know that
these are edible

and they're actually tasty.

[crunching]

I think I'm the most excited

to push my skills to the limit.

Oh, we got smoke! We got smoke!

And teach my grandkids
to do the exact same thing.

Hot, hot, hot, hot!

[winces] Fudge!

[Tray] Wow, that's hot.

[Amy] I know. The
hot is... [Tray] Brutal.

[Amy] Like, it's almost as
if you're walking on lava.

Let's pull the duct tape out.

- Yeah, that's...
- [Amy sighs]

It's like torture.

[Amy sighs]

Thank God I brought duct tape.

I'm gonna kinda
wrap it around my foot.

In the areas that are dying.

[Tray] Honestly,
her item of choice,

I was a little surprised by.

You don't see duct tape being
used on these challenges very often.

But I was wrong.

I am really glad
you brought this.

This right here is just...
[winces]... a gamechanger.

Uh, took me by surprise.

Really, I think we're gonna
get along great together.

That is so much better.

[Amy] Way better than it was.

[Tray] I came into this
wanting a good partner.

I think I've got that.

[Amy] Same. And
I agree. [laughs]

[Tray] I think that we can
make it through this 21 days

and get some redemption
for this landscape.

[narrator] As a caver,

Tray brings an
impressive ability

to stay calm under pressure.

But a lack of
significant fat stores

could present a hurdle.

He begins with a
primitive survival rating,

Or PSR, of 7.0.

Amy is relatively new
to primitive survival,

but brings ingenuity
into the challenge

and a lifetime of experience
defying expectations.

Amy starts with a PSR of 6.3.

[Amy sighs]

- [Tray] This is definitely...
- Hot.

...getting hot.

[both laugh]

Really good snake territory.

[Amy] Kinda glad we
haven't heard any rattling yet.

I'm definitely gonna
have to watch my step.

So that I don't step
on the rattlesnakes.

A little terrifying.

[Tray] Best thing you
can do if you see a snake

it's kinda like if you
see a train coming.

You step off the tracks.

[Amy] Well, that's good to know.

So, you've killed
a snake before?

[Tray] I am a snake hunter.

If I had a superpower,

I'd say that it's
my sense of smell.

I can smell a snake
from a mile away.

I'm gonna hunt it down and
we're gonna have dinner.

[Amy sighs wearily]

Tray, do you see any water yet?

[Tray] I sure don't
see any water

or any signs of it yet.

[Amy] Still no water.

It is getting so hot,
It is getting so hot,

and if we don't find
water, it's gonna suck.

I see a palm!

[Amy] Wait a minute, is
there a palm on the map?

[Tray] I think that's
our water hole.

[Amy] Yes!

Look up there next
to that beautiful palm.

- [Amy] The cave?
- You see that massive boulder?

Almost looks like a cave under?

[Amy] Oh, yes.

[Tray] We got water.

This is like a lagoon!

Yes, this is gorgeous.

[Amy] Oh, look
at how clear it is!

It's flowing.

Oh, so exciting.

This must be where
heaven and hell meet.

I'm pretty sure we just
walked through hell.

[Tray chuckles] I
think you're right.

[Amy] It kind of looks like it's
coming straight out of the mountain.

[Tray] It's flowing through
so much rock there.

I think that we could get
our drinking water here.

[Amy] Without boiling.

[Tray] That tastes
like wild water.

[Amy] Oh, that's wonderful.

I'm digging this location
if it's all it looks to be.

[Amy] I could keep
my feet in here all day.

If we didn't have
a shelter to build.

- Whoa!
- Oh!

All right, duct
tape's coming off.

[Tray] Let's look at this.

Oh, yeah!

[Amy] Oh, this is super neat.

[Tray] This, right here,
I could call this home.

But there's also
lots of other things

that'll want to call this home.

[Amy] Was gonna say,
this looks like an area

mountain lions would be.

[narrator] In arid regions,

wind and sand erosion
create rock shelters.

These cave-like formations
protect twilight hunters,

like mountain lions,
like mountain lions,

coyotes, and
rattlesnakes... [rattling]

...from the extreme
daytime heat.

[Tray] There's scat
everywhere under here.

Lots of snake scat.

I think we're gonna have to get
a fire going and smoke this out

or we're running
out of daylight.

- Yep, and...
- We're gonna have to do something here pretty soon.

- That sound good?
- Sounds good.

[Tray] I'll tell you what,
getting firewood naked

is a whole new ballgame.

[Amy] It sure is.

[grunts]

They don't call me
She-Ra at home for nothing.

- [laughs]
- [Tray] She's a beast!

[Amy] A little worried
about going into night one.

I'm hoping that we chose
the proper place to sleep

so that we're not dealing
with coyotes, mountain lions,

or snakes... [Tray] I
think fire's gonna be key.

[Amy] We're gonna
do whatever it takes

to make sure that we're not
getting attacked by animals.

[laughs]

[Tray] We got some
really good tinder here.

[Amy] I will start a bowl.

With the duct tape, I
can create a container

to be able to carry water.

[Tray] Oh, this wind
could be a little bit rough.

Do you want some duct tape
to hold your magnesium in place

so it doesn't fly out of there?

- [Tray] That is brilliant.
- [Amy laughs]

Yeah, that's working
really well to hold on to that.

[in sing-song voice] Hey, hey!

- All right...
- Awesome.

Look at that.

[Amy exclaims]

We got fire.

Look at that beautiful mess!

[Tray roars] Yeah!

This is awesome.

[Tray] So, we've got shelter
and we've got fire on day one.

- And we got a bowl.
- With a source of water.

This is definitely gonna
hold some good water.

[reverentially] A-ha!

I'm feeling pretty good.

We have fire, we have water.

Oh. Smell that?

When there's a snake
around, I can smell it.

They've got a
very distinct odor.

[Amy gasps] Snake!

[Tray] That's a
California king snake.

[Amy] Ah! Not in the water!

[Tray] Oh, no!

getting away that easy.

Oh, my Lord. He's got a snake.

- We got food.

We're gonna eat good tonight.

Day one, we've already
got water, fire, shelter

and food.

Look at that.

So, the challenge that took
place in this location before,

both of the survivalists
were taken out early.

I feel like we're already
ahead of the game.

[Amy] It makes you feel good.

It makes you feel like,

"I can survive this
challenge, 21 days".

And it shouldn't be
too big of a problem.

[Tray] Let's see if it's done.

Mmmh.

[Amy] How does it
feel? How does it taste?

[Tray] It has a
great flavor to it.

- Does it?
- Yeah, it really does.

It's a little tough, but...
This is actually not bad.

Oh, God. It's coyotes.

The fire will hopefully
keep predators away.

[Amy] You got your
knife close to you, right?

I think I'm gonna just sleep
with this stick right here.

I'm seeing a yellow
glow on the horizon.

[Amy] Oh, God, there it is!

[Tray] We got sunrise!

We have officially made
it through night one.

I didn't sleep
last night at all.

[Amy] Oh, God.

Sleeping on sharp rocks sucks.

[Tray] It looks like
sand that's quartz

sucks the moisture
out of your skin.

I think today we need
to focus on a wind trap

in the area that
you are right now.

[Tray] We have a large gap

where all the wind is
just howling through.

When it kicks up, it's ugly.

- It's cold.

[Tray] We're gonna be going
from 107 degrees during the day

to 40 degrees at night.

Plan for today is we're
gonna get us some palm fronds

and hopefully come up
with a pretty solid wind break.

We're also going to
get us some grass,

cut it all down and
build us up a bed.

It'll be softer than the rocks.

I feel like that should make
all the difference in the world.

I am making a curtain rod

so that we can block the wind
trying to come into our home.

[Amy] We're gonna take
some of that dead palm

to create basically
a curtain It gets cold.

We need to close up that
wind tunnel that we have.

[Tray] I'm gonna
build a fire here...

[Amy] Perfect.
Careful for below you.

We decided to move
the fire into this crevice

where it kinda has more
of a natural reflective wall.

All right.

[Tray] Awesome!

I think we're set up
for a pretty good night.

I might actually sleep.

[Amy] Oh, my God, wind, quit!

The wind is getting
a little strong.

Might be a little much
for our wind break here.

That wind is gonna
kick our ass tonight

if it does not go away.

[narrator] In the evening,
as temperatures plummet,

powerful winds
develop in the desert,

which create a vortex
blowing through the canyon.

The cold, dry air
and windchill combine

to increase the body's
risk of dehydration.

[Amy] There's no humidity here.

[Tray] No humidity.

And everything just sucks
the moisture right out of you.

[wind rushing]

It's funny, 'cause watching
some of the shows, I'm like,

"Oh, it's definitely
not that bad."

[wind rushing]

It's definitely that bad.

[chuckles]

Hopefully this will get
us fire for a good while.

[wind howling]

[Amy sighs, sniffles]

[Tray groans]

I'm being stabbed in the back.

This bedding sucks.

Grass sucks.

[Amy] It's so cold.

pushed up in the snow.

It's making the
arid temperatures

and dryness worse.

We need to solve that problem.

But first, we need firewood.

You know, we went
through more wood last night

than we did the
night before, by far.

[Amy] We are nowhere
near easy firewood.

Firewood is so far away
from the shelter that we chose.

All right.

I see a bunch of
deadwood over here.

We need that.

Ah! Fudge!

I think that's my new
favorite word out here.

[Tray] We are leapfrogging
these piles of wood...

- Thank you, I got it.

[Tray] ...from one spot
to the next... [grunts]

yonder, from our camp.

Camp is way up here.

See that little dark spot there?

[Tray grunts]

We are busting our asses
for everything that we've got.

[Amy exclaims]

[Tray] And every day, we
have to go further and further

for anything that we need.

[Amy grunts]

[winces]

Got on my foot.

Every single prickly thorn
that there is in this world

is legitimately finding my feet.

It's like, "Oh, your
feet feel better?

Here, let's make
them feel awful!"

[Tray] Ow, [bleeping].

This sucks.

I'm dying, I need to find
water or I'm gonna pass out.

[Tray] Sure.

[panting] That's... no joke.

It's hard work.

I'm exhausted.

I'm tired, I'm thirsty,

I don't want to
do any more work.

[Amy] I feel nauseous.

[Amy] This challenge is
definitely harder than I expected.

[screeching]

[Amy] Oh, it's so hot.

[Tray] How's your feet?

[Amy] My feet are... they suck.

A little burnt on the feet.

My feet hurt.

Like, they hurt.

The duct tape was
the saving grace.

But duct tape's slippery
on the big slippery rocks.

Okay... Hold on.

Put my feet in this water,
'cause it feels amazing.

I feel like if you could take
second-degree sunburn

and put it on the
bottom of your feet,

that's what my
feet are right now.

Looks like there's cuts on 'em,

they're literally cracked
open on my heels,

in between my toes...

[Amy speaking]

I literally just wanna lay down.

And just, like,
chill for a minute.

[Tray] I'm getting
pretty tired myself,

but we still got a
couple hours of sunlight.

We have got to
shore up that wall.

The wind tunnel
in there is horrible.

We have to do
something about that.

We decided that we need
to remake that palm curtain

with fresh palms.

And we gotta be able
to close it off completely.

[Tray] The palm
tree's just right here.

[Amy] Holy [bleep].

It's hot!

This is the time
of day that sucks.

These are so much easier
than the last ones that we got.

- Those dry ones.
- Wonderful.

[Amy] We feel
like the fresh palm

is definitely going to help us.

Make a little bit more airtight.

The more we can tie 'em
together, weave 'em together,

the better off we'll be.

[Amy] Right.

[Tray] It might
be a horrible idea,

but it might just work.

[Amy] We just need
to be able to stay warm.

[Tray] Mother nature's
out to kick our ass.

But I need warmth, I need fire.

If we build the
fire in between us,

we at least have half of it
radiating back to both sides.

that seasoned people

because I destroyed
myself in this challenge.

days, the sweltering heat

and relentlessly
cold and windy nights

were too much for Amy to take.

There's definitely a reason

for me right now is mental.

I just can't get over that hump.

I know that I'm gonna
have to take this on alone.

make it to 21 on my own.

But I took on this
challenge for a reason.

I gotta push myself as
far as I can push myself.

Devil's Canyon may
have taken three,

but it ain't taking me.

I'll show the devil who's boss.

I really do not want to spend
another night in this shelter.

Last night was miserable.

The wind tunnel through
here was freezing.

If I were to stay here
another night or two,

I could end up hypothermic
before the end of it.

This location, beautiful? Yes.

But, survival's ugly.

I mean, just look at this mug.

I'm gonna scout down
through this canyon.

I'm gonna find
me another shelter.

I want to be down towards
the lower end of the canyon.

That's where all
the vegetation is.

That's where
all the wildlife is.

Oh, man. Look at this.

There's shelter up in here.

I found this really
neat looking cavelet.

It's facing the opposite direction
that the wind is coming from at night.

It's small. It's much
smaller than what I had.

I think it's going to
be easier to heat.

You know, I could
probably lay right there.

All right. I got to get to work.

It's a scary move,

having to rebuild
shelter and everything.

It's like going back to day one.

Except for I am way more
depleted than I was on day one.

Way less energy.

I ain't got time
to be this weak.

But I think in order to
make it through day 21,

I got to do what I got to do.

I am building me a lean-to.

All the way down this crack.

I'm gonna weave a bunch of these

right in through here,

giving me the wind break
