- The first thing that I
started noticing was the smell.

It smelled like meat that
was sitting in a warm pot

or in a warm room for months.

I went up and down the hallway,
sniffing at people's doors,

because it was
getting unbearable.

When I got to his door,
I could really smell it.

[suspenseful music]

[suspenseful music]

- [Detective] Five of the
most prolific serial killers

in American history were all
operating at the same time.

- [Reporter 1]
John Wayne Gacy...

- [Reporter 2] Ted Bundy
is still alive...

- [Reporter 3] BTK.

- [Reporter 4] Jeffrey Dahmer.

- [Reporter 5] The so-called
Green River Killer.

- [Reporter] This was the
golden age of serial killing.

[suspenseful music]

- [Female Detective] Ridgway
was killing them within days,

weeks of each other.

There were just so many
victims during that time.

- [Male Reporter] Four more
victims were discovered,

three in the river, and
one on the river bank.

All of them had been strangled.

- When I enlisted, my
roommate was Jeffrey Dahmer,

and then it just started,
night after night, the attacks.

He was raping me
every single day.

- [Male Reporter] Dennis Rader
has not killed for years.

And law enforcement
is at a dead end

with regard to the
identity of BTK.

- You see Bundy's narcissism

on full display
in the courtroom.

Bundy actually thought that
his abilities as an attorney

were going to be so good

that he wasn't even
gonna be convicted.

- And this court here by
impose the death penalty

upon the defendant,
Theodore Robert Bundy.

[suspenseful music]

- [Female Reporter] It took
the jury less than two hours

to find John Wayne Gacy guilty
of murdering 33 young men.

- When he was
sentenced to death,

he didn't even blink.

He didn't bat an eye.

Nothing.

Now, that's a true sociopath.

I mean, the guy was scary.

[suspenseful music]

- Power and control
definitely plays

into the motivation of
a serial sexual killer.

And certainly in the five
cases that we're discussing,

Ridgway, BTK, John Wayne
Gacy, Dahmer, Ted Bundy

all very relevant to them.

That was all part of
what turned them on.

And caused them to wanna
do it over and over again.

[suspenseful music]

- [Male Reporter] The Green
River task force still

is looking for the lead
that will break the case.

- In January of 1984,

Gary Ridgway is divorced
from his second marriage.

He has one child,

but is still working at the
Kenworth Trucking Company.

But in the past two years,
he has killed 41 women.

- He spent so much time
trolling the highway,

picking women up, killing
them, dumping their bodies.

His true avocation and
what he enjoyed doing

was hunting and killing women.

And he was proud of the
fact that he was good at it.

[suspenseful music]

- [Male Reporter] Angry
residents are demanding police

do more to stop the killings.

- When the news
started reporting

about the bodies being
found along the Green River,

there was an outrage
in the public.

There was an anger
and a frustration.

It was like because all of
the victims are prostitutes

and runaways, are
they less important?

- We are very disappointed

in the focus of the
media attention.

The focus has constantly
been on the fact

that these women
are prostitutes.

That's not something
we can stand for.

These women are women first

and they're being killed.

[suspenseful music]

- [Pennie] Special funds from
the county were allocated

to the Green River
Killer task force.

- [Reporter] The Green River
task force was doubled in size,

making it the largest
police investigation

in Northwest history.

- And I believe they were
trying to show the public,

hey, we're really
taking this seriously.

And we're gonna catch the guy.

- [Reporter] The $200,000
Green River task force computer

will make connections and
comparisons about the case.

It's a high-tech
way to try and warm

what is a very cold trail.

- During that time, Ted Bundy
was in prison in Florida.

He was on death row.

And he contacted
Washington law enforcement

and offered to share
his thoughts about

who this killer was.

- He hadn't confessed
to his own crimes,

but Ted Bundy had offered

to give law enforcement
hypotheticals.

Here is how the killer
might have done this

or how the killer might
have evaded law enforcement.

- Ted Bundy was from the
same area in Seattle.

Although the victims he was
selecting were different.

Nonetheless, it was
still a predator

in that same part
of the Northwest.

They understood that he was
trying to extend his life.

He did not want to
be put to death,

but they also really
wanted to have help.

- So some detectives flew down
to Florida to interview him.

[suspenseful music]

- The portrait that he painted

of who the serial killer known

as the Green River Killer was,

was probably more of a
self portrait of Ted Bundy.

[suspenseful music]

- One of the worst things
that can happen to someone

that's psychopathic in
nature is put them in prison

and now they have to
live a routine every day.

And so if he's able to
spend hours and days talking

to homicide investigators coming
from all over the country,

it really does take him
away from the boredom

that I'm sure he was
experiencing

down there on death row.

- I don't think he had anything
to say that was relevant.

I think it was just, he wanted
to be in the limelight again.

Be important.

- Ultimately, he
had no information

at all that was helpful
to the investigation.

Everybody thought
the Green River case

was never gonna get solved,

but then Rebecca Garde had
the courage to come forward

and report what happened to her.

[suspenseful music]

- I was strangled
by Gary Ridgway.

I'm the only survivor.
[melancholy music]

At the time, the area

had been getting more
and more killings

and the numbers would flash up
on the TV screen quite a bit.

They were asking for
the public's help.

- And hopefully with
the community's support,

we'll solve this case.

[melancholy music]

- I had to make sure that
I was going to be ready

to say everything
that happened to me.

- It was understandable

that she didn't come
forward initially.

And frankly, at that time,

there wasn't a lot of effort

to prosecute people
who victimized women

who were engaged in prostitution
or sex trade workers.

There just wasn't.

Law enforcement was
not interested in it.

Prosecutors weren't
prosecuting those cases.

[suspenseful music]

- I finally got the courage
to talk to the police.

So one day, out of the
blue, I gave them a call.

- She had a critical
piece of information

that they hadn't had before.

- A lot of times
what he would do

to put our victim's mind
at ease is he would say,

I have a good job.

And maybe he would show
them his Kenworth ID.

And he would show a picture
of his young son and say,

I'm not a killer.

I'm a father.

He could show them anything

because he knew he
was gonna kill them.

- [Rebecca] They actually
showed me a bunch of photos

that were in a photo album.

- She was able to
give us the name.

- I had picked out his photo.

Of course, he was
right in my face

when he was attacking me.

- He always had weird evil eyes.

Every photo and every
picture that I see of him,

I see those eyes.
[dramatic music]

I remember them.

[suspenseful music]

- Rebecca Garde Guay
was so important

because she was the one
who established for us

what Ridgway was
really capable of

and what his MO was.
[suspenseful music]

- I felt a little bit of relief

and I also felt it would be
the worst thing that I've done

in my life because
I had now reopened

what exactly had
happened in the past.

[suspenseful music]

- They were able to
identify Gary Ridgway,

who she picked from
a photo montage,

as the man who had attacked her.

- We took a statement
from Rebecca

and then interviewed Ridgway
and he admitted to it.

He said, oh yes, you
know, that was me.

I did that.

But I strangled her because
she bit me and assaulted me.

It was self-defense.

- It sounds like a legitimate
excuse to law enforcement

and they leave it.

- And so the case never resulted

in any sort of criminal charges.

- I felt like nobody
was trying to help me

with what happened to me.

And he had already admitted
that he had strangled me.

This was a tip that
coulda helped stop

so many women from dying.

That blows me away to this day.

[suspenseful music]

- There were a
number of detectives

who truly believed he was
the Green River Killer,

even back then,

but certainly we did
not have the evidence

to move forward
with prosecution.

[suspenseful music]

- He seems like he could
be the guy next door.

That one person that's always
willing to give you a hand

or help you out with something.

My name is Martha Sidock

and I used to work
with Gary Ridgway

at the Kenworth plant
in Renton and Seattle.

He took his job very seriously.

He was a good employee.

I worked in the paint
department along with him.

He worked in where they put
the paint colors together.

And then also in the
fine line design.

Always happy go lucky
kind of attitude.

He always said hi.

Every now and then,

he would bring me like
a grocery bag of books.

And he knew the
authors that I liked

and would have those books.

So if he went and bought
them or something,

or just happened to
have them, I don't know.

You woulda never guessed
in a million years that,

you know, he was doing
what he was doing.

[suspenseful music]

- In 1985, Gary Ridgway
meets his third wife

and apparently
falls madly in love.

- [Katie] Gary
Ridgway and Judith met

at the peak of his killings.

Judith was out listening
to country music.

Judith was immediately
struck by Gary.

They danced for that entire
evening until the place closed.

- By her description,

they had a very happy
fulfilling marriage.

They were always together.

And the killings slowed down.

They didn't stop,

but they were not as prolific

as they were in the
'82 to '84 range.

- Murder rates can
go up and down.

And sometimes this
depends on what's going on

in the environment
of the killer.

Psychologists often talk about
positive protective factors,

like marriages and raising
children as experiences

that might lower murder
rates in these individuals.

And we actually see
that with Ridgway,

when he marries his
third wife, Judith.

[suspenseful music]

And also with Rader,

when he begins to become engaged

in raising his own children.

[suspenseful music]

- By 1985, BTK had disappeared.

Everyone thought he's either
dead or he's in prison

because no one's heard
from him since 1979.

- So the question is,
what happened to him?

- At that time, they
thought there's no way

someone with this compulsion
to kill could stop.

[suspenseful music]

[keys tapping]

- There are practical reasons

that serial killers stop
for a period of time.

In the case of Dennis
Rader, he had a busy life.

He was working, he was
working in his church.

He had a family,
he had children.

Even though those urges

and those compulsions
are still very powerful,

he had other things
going on in his life,

occupying his time.

- And then in 1985, he kills
his neighbor, Marine Hedge.

[suspenseful music]

- Marine Hedge lived up the
street from Dennis Rader.

And years later,

he will talk about how
proud he is of this homicide

because of the risk he
took in killing somebody

in his own habitat.

[suspenseful music]

- He would walk down the
street with his daughter

and say, hi,
Marine, how are you?

[suspenseful music]

- [Reporter]
53-year-old Marine Hedge

was last seen a
week ago by a friend

who'd taken her to dinner.

She was home by
1:00 AM Saturday.

Later that day, her
door was found ajar,

her phone lines cut, and
Marine Hedge was missing.

[suspenseful music]

- [Reporter] 53-year-old Marine
Hedge was last seen a week ago.

There are very few clues
to work with on this case.

[suspenseful music]

- He's blacked out windows.

And he did this so he would
have time to spend with her

and he will take hundreds of
Polaroid photographs of her,

posing her in various positions.

- Dennis Rader is a treasure
trove of paraphilias.

He was sexually aroused by
binding and torturing others.

He's sexually aroused by binding

and basically torturing himself.

He's sexually
aroused by dressing

in the undergarments of women.

And so all three of these,

sexual sadism, masochism, and

what we will call transvestic
fetishism represent

his sexual inclinations,

manifesting in these,

what we would consider
unusual behaviors.

[dramatic music]

- [Female Reporter]
The body was nude

and police say badly decomposed.

A pair of knotted pantyhose

were found lying in
the ditch beside it.

But police say that's
about all the evidence

they have to go on.

- Well, they never
dreamed this was BTK

because BTK had disappeared.

This was seven years later
and this wasn't his MO.

He would keep the bodies
strangled inside the house.

- Her case was thought
of, at that time,

as kind of a one off.

It just didn't make
sense that he wouldn't

at least seek some
acknowledgement.

- Unlike lots of serial killers,

he worked to get the
media to acknowledge him.

So, in this case,

it's really kind of unusual

in that he doesn't
reach out to the media.

- It may reflect that
his needs for attention

are being met elsewhere,

or that he is very aware

that law enforcement
may likely catch him

if he does reach out.

[suspenseful music]

Like Dennis Rader,

there was a long period of time

where Jeffrey
Dahmer did not kill.

In 1978, he committed his
first murder at age 18.

And that he desperately
does everything he can

to not repeat that same act.

He uses alcohol.

He goes and steals a mannequin.

His grandmother makes him
give the mannequin away,

but eventually he starts
on a downward spiral

of escalating
behaviors that seem

to bring him closer
and closer and closer,

back to the act of
serial homicide.

[suspenseful music]

- During the time
that Dahmer was

between his first
and second victim,

he would go to the bath houses

and that he would have anonymous
sex with a number of men.

- Dahmer began drugging
some of these men.

[suspenseful music]

- The way that Jeffrey
Dahmer would operate

would be to, you know,

give his victims a drink and
crush sleeping pills in it.

- And then when the
men would wake up

or start walking around
Dahmer, didn't like that.

He wanted them to be still,

basically pretend
they were dead.

- Jeffrey Dahmer, in an
interview, even admitted

this intense need to
control his victims.

- In one case, the
guy didn't recover.

He wasn't killed, but
he was heavily asleep.

The bathhouse
operator was alarmed.

Summoned an ambulance.
[siren wails]

But it did not come to the
attention of the police,

whether the complainant
didn't wanna do it,

didn't wanna be connected
with a bath house.

Can't tell you that,

but it did not come to the
attention of the police.

- The gay community

has always had a
contentious relationship

with the police force.

You know, they remember how
gays were treated by police

because it was illegal
to even be gay.

So gays were very
apprehensive to have anything

to do with the police at all.

- Knowing that he was involved
in this drugging situation,

the word got out, don't let
Dahmer in the bath house

'cause he's doing something
to the other customers.

So they banned him
from the bath houses.

[suspenseful music]

- [Robert] Almost
exactly one year later,

Dahmer kills a second victim.

[suspenseful music]

[upbeat music]

♪ You build a fortress

♪ For yourself

- In 1987, Jeffrey
Dahmer started going

to gay bars in
downtown Milwaukee

and he met a young
man, Steven Tuomi.

[suspenseful music]

- Dahmer picks up Steven Tuomi

and takes him to the Ambassador
Hotel where they have sex.

- [Patricia] They had drinks
and Dahmer drugged the drinks

with the Halcion.

- The next morning,

Dahmer wakes up and Steven
Tuomi is lying dead beside him.

Now, at first Dahmer said
he had no recollection

of the events.

but later Dahmer did say

he does remember punching
Stephen Tuomi in the chest,

but that was about it.

[suspenseful music]

Once Steven Tuomi is dead, he
has to dispose of the body.

So Dahmer goes to a store,
buys a huge suitcase,

comes back, dismembers
Steven Tuomi,

and puts him in the suitcase
and then gets into a cab.

And the cab driver remembers
smelling an awful funky smell

coming from that suitcase.

[suspenseful music]

- The cab driver
picked up the suitcase

and made a comment
about it being heavy

and even quipped,

"What do you have in here?

"A dead body?"

[suspenseful music]

- [Patricia] Jeffrey Dahmer
called a cab to take him home.

And when he took the
body out of the hotel

in this huge suitcase,

the cab driver questioned Dahmer

about why the
suitcase was so heavy.

I don't know what he
told him was in there,

but he got away with it.

The cab driver didn't
go to the police

and they never found
Steven Tuomi's body.

[suspenseful music]

- [Narrator] For years,
the Green River task force

has chased the ghost of a killer

who remains too diabolically
clever to catch.

- By 1987, Gary Ridgway was
still a person of interest.

And we had had a number
of conversations with him.

- Gary was questioned by
police a number of times

because of the fact that he
traveled up and down Highway 99

so many times.

He was known by the prostitutes.

- Two of the detectives put
together a search warrant

for Ridgway's residence

based on all of the
information that they'd had,

the fact that he admitted
frequenting prostitutes,

the Rebecca Garde
Guay information,

and so on and so forth.

- [Patty] They were
able to search his house

and his car and his work locker
at the Kenworth facility.

[suspenseful music]

- The police had actually
come to the plant.

It was a little
unnerving to think

that he was a potential suspect.

People started calling
him Green River Gary.

[suspenseful music]

I like to try to give everybody
the benefit of the doubt,

but there was a few times
he would come up behind me

and like put a hand
on each shoulder.

And one time, he
said that, you know,

you don't even have to use
your hands to kill somebody.

It almost was like
he was waiting to see

what I would do or say by saying
something like that to me.

That really unnerved me.

- During that search warrant,

they didn't find any
smoking gun evidence

that in any way tied him
to the Green River murders.

But they collected a
DNA cheek swab from him.

[suspenseful music]

- We asked him, did you
want a piece of gauze?

That was for blood typing.

- It was pretty
standard at that time

when you executed
a search warrant

to take biological
samples from people

to identify what
blood type they were,

which is, you know, all that
was possible at that time.

And then, of course, you
know, the science developed.

- Little did we know that
that specific piece of gauze

would be the key to this
case 20 years later.

[suspenseful music]

- A year after he
kills Steven Tuomi

Dahmer starts to
adapt his methods

and he begins luring
men home with him.

And eventually
evolves into going out

to victimize younger men,
even young teenage boys.

- Keison Sinthasomphone was 13

when Dahmer observed him
walking home from school

and offered to pay him money

if he could take some
photos of him posing.

[suspenseful music]

- Keison was a child

and Dahmer specifically
targeted victims

who were very small.

And that was so he knew
he could overpower them,

you know, drugged them first

and then was able to
handle them physically.

- Dahmer had him come
into the apartment,

asked him to pose nude.

[camera clicks]

Back then, no cell phones,

but he had a Polaroid and he
took Polaroid pictures of him,

gave him a drink that was laced

with a very powerful
sleeping pill.

- He sexually assaulted him,

but Keison was able to escape.

[suspenseful music]

- At some point,

the young man decided to leave

and Dahmer didn't use
force to restrain him.

He let him leave.

- He was staggering.

He was pretty much out of it.

His parents called police.

They were able to identify
Dahmer's apartment.

- Dahmer confessed to it

and the prosecution
went forward.

He was convicted of sexual
involvement with a child.

Even after that, he
couldn't stop himself.

He was a very calculated,
clever, capable killer.

- While Jeffrey was
waiting sentencing,

his urges became uncontrollable.

[dramatic music]

[suspenseful music]

- Good morning.

For 10 years,

Ted Bundy has been
fighting execution

in Florida's electric chair.

30 minutes from now,

Bundy is scheduled to die here
at the Florida State Prison

on death row.

- I think it's finally
going to be over.

It's been 15 years
of ups and downs.

And then we can just sit back

and concentrate on
the good memories.

The night of his execution,

it wasn't a happy
occasion for us.

It was necessary.

But the carnival
atmosphere that played out

on the lawn in Starke,
Florida was sickening to us.

[people cheering]
[suspenseful music]

- [Female Reporter] Several
hundred spectators turned out

for Bundy's death.

In just about 10 minutes,

the serial killer is
scheduled to be executed here

at Florida State Prison.

[people cheering]

- His head was shaved and
he was as white as a sheet.

He was just as scared
as he could possibly be.

And when the switch is thrown,

Bundy's fists tensed.

As I watched his hands,

I wondered how many throats

had those hands
tightened around.

- Serial killer Theodore
Bundy is executed.

This morning, he died in
Florida's electric chair.

- After three trials,
three death sentences,

and several rejected appeals.

And 10 years on death row.

Bundy is finally executed.

[people cheering]
[melancholy music]

- I was glad when he was gone

that nobody else would be hurt.

But, unfortunately,
killing a serial killer

[melancholy music]

doesn't stop them from
being a serial killer.

They did their damage.

- The FBI's
development of research

and focusing on these types
of cases really was solidified

with the Bundy case.

Every serial killer
is different.

They're motivated
different ways.

They engage in
different behaviors.

But if we can
develop a construct,

patterns start to emerge.

They're very egocentric,
narcissistic,

thinking only of themselves.

It's about power,
control, dominance.

Everything is about them.

[suspenseful music]

- [Robert] While Jeffrey
Dahmer is awaiting sentencing

for his sexual assault
on Keison Sinthasomphone.

He's free to walk the streets

and then he meets his next
victim, Anthony Sears.

- Tony was always the
life of the party.

[upbeat music]

You know, you could
take him anywhere

and you do you were
gonna have a good time.

[upbeat music]

If we were at a certain
club or something

and some song would come on,

it would be off to
the dance floor.

Let's go talk to this person.

♪ I'm only alive

One night, we ended
up going to one

of the bigger night
clubs at the time.

So I went off and
did my own thing

and later that evening,

I met him at the same
corner, like we always did.

And that is when he introduced
me to this person, Jeff,

that he had met.

He seemed just as
normal and average

as anybody else you would meet.

[suspenseful music]

[engine rumbling]
[suspenseful music]

The three of us ended
up getting into my car.

Tony and him sat
in the back seat.

When I dropped them off,

they hopped out of the car
and ran across the street.

I never really saw
where they went.

[suspenseful music]

- Jeffrey Dahmer's MO
was to drug the victims

when they came in and then he
would go after them sexually.

And about the time the
person would be recovering,

he would strangle the
individual to death

and then continue
his sexual activities

with a deceased body.

What we call necrophilia,
sex with a dead body.

[suspenseful music]

- For some killers,

the kill is the
exciting piece of this.

The control that they have as
somebody's life drains away.

But for Dahmer, the kill
was not what he liked.

The kill was just something
he had to get through

to essentially get
to the good things,

which was control and
possession of the victim.

[suspenseful music]

- With Anthony Sears,

Jeffrey Dahmer did something
a little bit different.

He takes the severed
head and genitalia

and places them
in a refrigerator

to re-enact or relive the
event at a later date,

as well as to use these body
parts for sexual gratification.

He is having his victim
with him forever.

[suspenseful music]

- Nobody knew what
had happened to Tony.

I thought personally that he
was just spending more time

with this person.

Because I was the last
person to see Tony,

the police would come over
to my house and talk to me.

[suspenseful music]

I paged through hundreds
and hundreds of pictures

to see if I could
recognize Jeffrey Dahmer.

I didn't really recognize
anybody in the pictures.

I don't think I could've given
a good enough description

of what Jeff looked
like at the time.

I didn't really pay that
much attention, I suppose.

[melancholy music]

I still feel guilty.

I blame myself.

I just felt that I should've
take care of my friend more.

[melancholy music]

[suspenseful music]

- When Jeffrey Dahmer
killed Anthony Sears,

he was awaiting his sentencing
for a sexual assault.

Dahmer is sentenced
to a year in prison

for the sexual assault,

but somehow convinces
the judge to let him out

after 10 months.

Afterwards, he moves
into an apartment

on the west side of Milwaukee.

[melancholy music]

- The neighborhood was seedy.

I always call it seedy.

[car whooshing]

There were a lotta
working girls,

pimps, drug dealers.

I lived right across
the hall from Jeff,

right across the hall from him.

Three feet.

He was outta place to be
the white guy down here.

Nice looking.

Wasn't anything wrong with him.

And I would keep asking him,
why are you staying down here?

I would see him occasionally
bringing a guy into his house,

but then, as it kept
going on, I said,

I always see you bringing
men home with you,

but I don't ever see them leave.

I said, they must
spend the night

and then get up early
in the morning and leave

like before we give
up or something.

And he'd say, yeah.

Yep, that's it.

[phone rings]

- And very unfortunate and
just a unbelievable twist,

Keison Sinthasomphone's
brother, Konerak,

also was befriended by Dahmer.

- Konerak was only 14 years
old when Dahmer met him

at the Grand Avenue Mall
in downtown Milwaukee.

And he talked him into
coming to his apartment

under the pretense
of taking photos,

just like Konerak's
older brother.

[suspenseful music]

- He got the young man into
his apartment, drugged him,

and then started drilling
into his head to see

if he could make
him into a zombie.

Dahmer had this fantasy
of getting a zombie,

a sex zombie, to be
completely submissive to him

and do what Dahmer wanted.

[suspenseful music]

- Jeffrey Dahmer's
mother suffered

from some sort of mood disorder

where she was consistently
doped up on drugs

and passed out on the couch.

So this feeling of
interacting with someone

who was basically a
zombie gets recreated

in his murderous crimes.

He literally tried
to create zombies

by injecting acid
into their brains.

[suspenseful music]

- Dahmer frequently drank when
he was doing these things.

So he decided to go out
and get some alcohol.

Well, the young man got
out of the apartment,

got down onto the street.

And he was found by
some young children

who called their mother.

[suspenseful music]

- Me and my friends
were outside.

[suspenseful music]

This boy came down the hill

with the sheet
wrapped around him.

There was blood on the sheet

and he was just standing
like shaking like that.

And we were like,

where did you come from?

And he had said something about,
I came from that apartment.

[dramatic music]
[siren wails]

- Finally, the police got there

and they deduced that Konerak
couldn't speak English

because he couldn't
articulate what was wrong.

- You know, this kid had
had a small hole drilled

in his head and acid poured in

and he had been given Halcion.

So he was really incoherent.

So he couldn't communicate
with law enforcement.

[suspenseful music]

- At this point,

Jeffrey Dahmer himself

We kept trying to tell
