On the exposed grazing meadow,
hares must keep on high alert.

hundreds of years old,

For the sheep, this

settles in and waits.

year have pushed their way

through the hard soil.

Snowdrops.

They bloom weeks before any
other plants on the farm.

This hearty little flower
kickstarts the honeybees' year,

ready for them
to begin pollinating

all across the farm.

At the far end of the farm

in a tangle of trees
called Pigwood,

a Berkshire sow named
Grace is chowing down

at a table for one.

It's a lonely time
of year.

Her piglets have all
grown up and moved away.

But at least she hasn't
lost her appetite.

There's a rumble
in the distance.

A blind date
has been arranged.

Grace is about to
receive a VIP,

a Very Important Pig.

Meet handsome Hugo.

He's here to sire
a new generation

of Berkshire piglets.

Grace is very eager
to introduce herself

to this gentleman caller.

[pigs snorting]

Who could say no to
a face like this?

The lingering scent of
hormones in her urine

tells Hugo
she's in heat.

But no need to
rush into things.

Grace takes the lead,
and nuzzles him

in a bid for attention.

To avoid any
confusion,

she makes her intentions
crystal clear.

[pigs snorting]

But Hugo is playing hard to get

and heads deeper into Pigwood,

with Grace in hot pursuit.

Someone else has
caught his eye.

Another sow.

It seems Hugo's got a thing
for the girl next door,

and starts
chatting her up.

Pigs have a repertoire of more
than 20 distinct vocalizations,

from saying,
"excuse me, I'm walking past",

to,
"do you come here often?"

[pigs snorting]

Whatever these two
are saying,

Grace isn't part of the
conversation.

Perhaps she just
isn't Hugo's type.

[pigs snorting]

But she is one
determined sow.

Handsome Hugo,
however,

is going to take a bit more
convincing.

narrator: As the weather warms,

more blossoms and buds emerge.

The farm is coming alive.

But over in
the cow barn,

a family is
falling apart.

[sad music plays]

A single voice
breaks the silence.

[cow moos]

It's Molly.

[cow moos]

She's calling for her mother.

[cow moos]

But there's no reply.

During the night, Mabel,
her mother, passed away.

No matter how domesticated
cows have become,

complications in the
days following labor

are still a present danger.

Scientists have found
that cows grieve.

If one of their family
dies or disappears,

they can fall into
a deep depression

and spend weeks searching
for their lost ones.

All around the other calves are
bathed in care and affection.

But Molly's immediate support
system has vanished overnight.

Without her mother,
young Molly is hungry.

Driven by an
empty belly,

she approaches the other
feeding calves.

But the other mothers
drive her away.

Cockerel, surveys his kingdom.

Distinguishable by the
large cockscomb on his head,

the only male in the
coop stands proud

as he lords it over the hens.

But in truth, he's outnumbered

and outranked.

The real top of the pecking
order here is Sally.

She dominates Big Joe
and the other hens.

If any squabbling occurs,

Sally will sort it out.

Everyone knows their place.

As hens go, she's
the jealous type

and doesn't like anyone getting
too close to her Big Joe.

She's his preferred
mating partner

and works hard to
keep it that way.

But today her feathers
are about to get ruffled.

The farmer is introducing four
new spring chickens to increase

the number of eggs
being laid.

[chicken clucking]

Big Joe is suddenly
spoiled for choice.

He now has seven
hens in his harem.

[uplifting music plays]

He struts over to
introduce himself.

She looks appealing.

But nothing escapes
Sally's beady eye,

and she's quick
to assert herself.

It's foul play, but

Her top position
is now in jeopardy.

The competition is on.

of secretive hunters emerging

from their winter torpor.

The badgers head out for their
first midnight feast in months.

They've been known to raid
the hen house for eggs.

But tonight they're
sticking closer to home.

Earthworms are their
favorite delicacy.

They make up a whopping
80% of their diet.

But after a dry winter,
they're in short supply.

A wood mouse would be
a welcome alternative,

but this Hunter is a bit too
groggy for anything that fast.

Badgers, like pigs, identify
each other by scent.

The whole family shares a
common musky odor,

which they pass to each other
by bum pressing.

This way if they ever have
a fight with a rival clan,

they can smell
who's on their side.

The badgers aren't the only
ones staying up late tonight.

While the world sleeps,
the cows are wide awake.

[soft music plays]

The cows spend a third
of the day drowsing

and will only fall into
deep sleep for four hours.

Whereas Sally and
the chickens sleep

through most of the night,
often with one eye open.

Half of their
brain rests,

while the other half remains
alert in case

the badgers or the local fox
comes calling.

Meanwhile, Grace and Hugo
are out for the count.

Pigs need about the same
amount of sleep as people,

and they also have
vivid dreams.

[snoring]

Perhaps Grace is
dreaming about getting

Hugo's attention at last.

[pigs snorting]

There's only one animal on
the farm loud enough

to wake these two.

[rooster crows]

Big Joe kicks off
the dawn chorus,

signaling the start of a
new day for all the animals.

With the first flush of

new life is blossoming

the indigenous wild cattle

that once roamed here tens
of thousands of years ago.

They've retained wilder
habits than the Herefords,

and their stronger
constitution allows them

to graze on rougher
vegetation.

One month old Lola
is a particularly

spirited member of
the herd.

Scientists have
proven that every cow

has its own
unique personality.

Some are pessimists.

While others, like Lola, look
on the sunny side of the barn.

She's always the first
to instigate playtime.

[playful music plays]

It gives Lola the motor skills
she'll need in adulthood.

But perhaps more importantly,
she's forging friendships.

There's a strict hierarchy
within every cow herd,

and if Lola wants to
achieve any social status,

she'll need to make friends
and influence her peers.

Cows choose the wisest
female, not the biggest,

to lead their herd.

In games just like this,
rivalries, alliances,

and future leaders
are emerging.

Power struggles of
a different kind

are playing out in
the grazing meadows.

These lush organic fields are
paradise for a particular group

of grass loving
herbivores.

Spring is the time for hares
to impress potential partners.

And it's the females
who run the show.

[upbeat music plays]

This male hare, known as a
Jack, is trying to cozy up

to a female,
known as a Jill.

She's testing him,
playing hard to get.

What's more, competition
is closing in.

Now two Jacks vie
for her attention.

The males prepare to box.

But one of them immediately
throws in the towel.

The fight is still on, but
now it's Jack versus Jill.

She with the bigger
tail on the right.

The Jill still needs to see if
he's made of the right stuff

to father her young.

That means fighting
him herself.

But before a winner
can be decided...

They're rudely interrupted.

It's the farm's wily fox.

[suspenseful music plays]

Stealth, not speed,
is the fox's strategy.

But the hare can bolt
at 40 miles per hour.

[upbeat music plays]

The hare has outfoxed
the cunning predator.

If only he had as much
luck with the ladies.

The chalk stream that
runs through the farm

is bustling
with life.

In a nearby thicket, a song
thrush is raising her brood.

She's chosen this spot well.

There are worms and snails
all along the water's edge.

She has three healthy and
hungry chicks who she has

to feed seven times
every hour.

It's exhausting work.

[tender music plays]

She's not the only bird on
the farm raising a brood.

So too is her domesticated
relative, Sally.

She's incubating eight
eggs in a cozy maternity

ward away from the
other hens.

Big Joe's favorite mating
partner is going to be a mother

where her rivals have failed.

narrator:
All mother hens communicate

with their unborn chicks

through a series
of clucks.

And they talk back
very quietly,

not just to their mother,
but to each other.

It's a signal that they're
almost ready to break free.

This way even though the eggs
were laid several days apart,

they can all hatch
at the same time.

There's safety in numbers.

But Sally's brood isn't
following the program.

One of them is
ahead of the game.

It's little Frankie.

This early bird has a whole
new world to make sense of.

[chicks cheeping]

She should also be learning
the rules of chicken society

from her siblings.

But none of them
have hatched yet.

So her exhausted mother
must bear the full brunt

of Frankie's enthusiasm.

Sally has doted over her clutch
of eight eggs for three weeks.

But the remaining
seven are all silent.

If the others were
going to hatch,

they would have done
so by now.

It's very rare for
only one out of a

clutch of eight eggs
to hatch.

It's not good news
for Frankie.

She'll grow up an only chick.

Without competitive siblings
to teach her the pecking order,

Frankie will be clueless when
she's introduced to the flock.

But at least she
has her mother.

Unlike Molly,
the orphaned calf.

Without Mabel to guide
her, she's struggling

to connect with
the others.

She spends her time looking out
for the farmer,

whom she knows will
feed her.

But she'll have to
stop relying on him

if she's to integrate
into the herd.

She sees her Aunt Florence
nursing her cousin.

Molly moves in to try
her luck one more time.

[hopeful music plays]

This time Florence
lets her in.

It's a selfless act
from a very special cow.

It's a big step forward
for Molly and an attachment

she deeply needs
right now.
