was going to hit the south-west

and would pass
near the north of Tokyo.

The Sounmaru,
a ferry of the Seikan line,

left the port of Hakodate
at the scheduled time

with 856 passengers onboard.

But at about 8:00pm,

the weather forecast
gave a different warning.

The typhoon was changing its route

and seemed to be heading
towards the south of Hokkaido.

A warning report was sent out
to all fishing ports

from the south coast of Hokkaido
up north to Iwanai.

Wind speeds were
up to 55mph inland...

...and up to 78mph out at sea.

This unexpected typhoon
caused a great deal of damage.
