The little one,
she's eight years old.

she passed away

when I was nine years old.

to much people,

but when she passed away,

that's when I got
really into surfing.

Tried to clear my head.

- Surfing big waves,
you can die, no?

But as he said,
you can die doing anything.

I'm not scared because I know
that it's nothing

that I can't control, you know?

I can't change how life works.

It just helps me to enjoy
everything that life gives me.

- Iceland was
definitely on my radar.

But the word "Iceland" doesn't
sound very appealing to me.

Like, I have a hard enough time
in Nazaré when it's windy.

- Camera, speed.
- Action.

- We were going there
for Thule,

for a branding video,

and they were funding

getting from Hawaii
to Portugal.

So it was a no-brainer.

Whoa.

I've seen some things
here and there

through the years,

but I didn't know much.

The place was so beautiful,
so powerful, so amazing.

Everywhere's green.
There's no trees.

Felt like you're on the moon.

Whoa, didn't notice that.

Like that one.
Try that one, bro.

- Like these ones?
- Yeah, those look good.

- When we went to Iceland,

Garrett really wanted
to take Barrel surfing.

And I know Garrett wants to be
super pushy with Barrel,

but I think he knows
if he's too pushy,

that Barrel will
just never surf

another day in his life.

- I want him to do
what he wants to do,

but I just feel like
Barrel has this opportunity

to make a career
out of surfing,

which I think is the best job
in the world.

And he doesn't even have
to ride big waves.

He can just go get barreled.

His name is Barrel
and he gets barreled,

and that's all he's gotta do.

Oh, wow.

Right? It actually looks good.

- It looks big.

- I think it was
a little too big for him,

considering it's a new spot
he's never been to

and it's freezing.

- I'm definitely glad
I'm not Barrel.

That's what happens
when you're good at something.

- No, it's not.

It's when you're a kid
and you have a bossy dad.

- A bossy dad?

You know, sometimes,
he can push people,

and sometimes, he can be pushy.

But it was really nice
for him to be present.

And I can hope it just lasts
for the rest of our life.

We only planned
on having one child.

- After you--

But here we are.

- So Garrett's like,
"Let's have this one

in Portugal,"
and I'm just like,

"Ah, but it's gonna be winter.

"I'll, you know, have my things
in Hawaii.

"I have my people.
I have my food.

I have--it's warm."

But with the big wave season
and everything,

it's like, okay, well,
if we're in Hawaii

and a big wave comes
to Nazaré,

like, Garrett's not gonna
be able to leave,

and if the perfect swell comes,
he would want to be here.

Barrel!

- Dad, can you hold
the door back?

- You have three seconds
to get here.

- What's that?

- So that helped make
the decision

to have the baby
and spend the winter here

in Nazaré.

[kids babbling]

- I don't remember
exactly how I found out

about child number three.

It seemed like
one of Garrett's jokes

or Nicole's jokes, like,
"Yeah, we got another one."

We're like, "Wow!"

You know, there's this energy
of, "Don't we have enough?"

- [mimics gunshot]

- Garrett seemed like
he was doing the Nicole thing

where she convinces herself
to know it's okay

and he was, like,
convincing himself

to be excited about it.

- We were all really excited.

I was the most excited
I've been

of--out of the other--yeah.

I was very, very excited.

[exciting music]

- Going into this season,
I don't think it was so much,

like, him riding
the biggest wave of the year,

but he doesn't want
to be retired

and not part of the culture.

And since his wipeout
at Jaws...

- Dad.
- Go, Garrett! Yeah!

- Oh!
- No! Oh!

- You all right?
- Yeah.

- There's been a fear in him
that he never had before.

- [coughing]
- He's not the same.

But I don't think
he's figured it out.

- FOMO. It's pure FOMO.

Like, you know, he sees
all the young guys doing it.

- [grunting]

- Garrett's like,
"Get me out there."

I don't think
he'll ever lose that.

I think it's just a process
that he's going through,

and I'm totally supportive
of it

because if it gets him
to a place of, like, peace,

I think he would be great.

- [exhaling sharply]

I've been in Nazaré, like,

just over six weeks,
seven weeks.

Yeah, beginning of the season.

I'm renting a house
for the first time.

Van life was cool,

but doing it for six months,
like, that's it.

It's just like,
by the end of it,

it was hard work, you know?

[sighs]

- [laughs]

Uh, well, yeah.

I met Justine, and we've been
getting on really well,

and we're enjoying it.

- Prior to meeting Cotty,

what was your experience
with big wave surfing?

- Oh, none. None.

- Justine gets it.

She gets the sacrifices.
She gets the training.

It's been life-changing.

[light orchestral music]

- This season,
the main goal I had in my head

was the tow-in contest.

- I don't think
people took notice of Tony

until this year, you know?

He's stepped his game up
so much this year.

He's gotten so good.

- You can see that he's,
like, pushing himself.

He's trying. He's learning.
He's super dedicated.

Nah.
[groans]

I got some solid pounding.
I was not expecting that.

Ahh.

[bell ringing]

[sweeping music]

- I like contests.
It's part of my job.

But after the season
of 2020, '21,

I had the best season
of my life so far,

so going for a new season
was tough.

Like, super tough.

- After Mavericks and Jaws,

we came back and were like,
"That was crazy," you know?

Like, every single trip was

one achievement of a lifetime
of a big wave surfer.

We didn't really know
what to do.

- You feel like
you reach something,

but then I need
a different challenge.

I want to experience
something air,

something new, something more.

Nice. [indistinct].

[both laugh]

[indistinct chatter]

[both laugh]

- Yeah.
[squeals, laughs]

For sure. This one.
- Yeah.

- [laughs]

- I knew that I was
going to Nazaré this fall.

But I still didn't know
if I was going to surf!

I knew that I was going
to support Garrett

and his surfing
and support the family

and, like, number one,
support my sister.

She was going over there
to birth her child.

And also just by being
with the kids,

with Barrel and Theia.

You know, it takes some load
off of Nicole.

Oh, you are stylin'.

What shoes is it gonna be?
What's the shoes?

But the progression
of the fall season in Nazaré

just kept getting
more and more intense.

Not long after I get there,

the whole family gets floored
with COVID.

[tense music]

- Garrett complained
he wasn't feeling good.

He takes a test...

♪ ♪

And we all get COVID.

- Came on slow.

Then that night,
it was something else.

It was super interesting.

- So I called my midwife

crying hysterically
that I have COVID,

and she's like, "It's okay.
We're gonna get through this.

You're gonna be fine.
You're gonna be fine."

[coughing]
I was like, "Oh, my God.

"What am I gonna do?

"I've got these two kids.
I have to feed them.

Everything is gonna be chaos."

- Um, the kids.

See?

I love you, Theia.

It went downhill really fast.

[coughing]

We couldn't even move.

Garrett lost his appetite.

He didn't eat.
He didn't sleep.

But I couldn't even worry
about him

'cause I was so sick.

[coughing]

Don't even Google
pregnant ladies and COVID.

[coughs]

- Yeah.

Until last night.

So we get through the COVID.

- Sup, buddy?

- But my back's still out,

and as soon
as I tested negative,

my liver shut down.

- Was this COVID-induced?

- 100%.

So I went
and had blood work done.

I started
this very strict diet.

I was doing Chinese herbs.

Acupuncture.

I was doing
everything humanly possible

to get my levels low enough
and in control

to be able to let the baby come

whenever the baby wanted
to come.

And, you know,
before we had COVID,

I had this weird fear
of dying during childbirth.

Like, bleeding out.

And now
I have a liver condition,

so I'm afraid
of my baby dying.

- I've never seen Nicole
so afraid.

- She was--I mean, I've never
seen her break down so much.

It was--yeah, it was
really challenging to watch.

I just had to stay positive
and stay strong.

I chose to know that
everything was gonna be okay.

- You know,
he has to stay busy

so that he doesn't feel
his feelings.

So when all of this
is happening,

Garrett was still looking
at the projected storms

and swells and wind
and rain and...

[line beeps]

- Hey, Alemao.

- I'm just finalizing
the water safety

for the event.

- And for this season's
WSL contest,

they officially made him
the contest director.

So his responsibility was
to publicly make the call

of when the contest
is gonna run.

- Where are we at?
Where are we at?

All right, well,
let's manifest this thing

happening over the next
two to three weeks,

maybe even quicker.

The swell that's coming through
looks very interesting.

It should be big.

- I definitely think
Sunday's big enough

if what's predicted right now
shows up.

Totally big enough...

- He has to manage the teams,

like, who's invited,
who's teamed up,

who's not invited.

- The main way you get in
is if you can surf really good

and drive in Nazaré.

A bad driver,

somebody whose ski
ends up on the rocks,

and then you gotta go
rescue 'em.

And that's a liability.

It would be nice to open it up
to a bigger field,

but with the small window
we have,

we gotta get
as many surfers as possible

in that short window.

[line trilling]
So you gotta be able to drive.

[phone rings]

- Hello.
- What up?

- I wanted to talk to you
about the contest.

- Yo. What's up, Garrett?

- I wanted to invite Michelle
to be in it

if she wants to.

- Yeah, she's ready.
- I'm ready. Amazing.

- Michelle got invited,

and then with her
came along Ian.

- Good.

Justine has become
one of the best in the world.

- I'm ready.
[laughs]

- [laughs]
Cotty, of course...

- No way.

- I'm always advocating
for Cotty.

And since we were kinda
letting the surfer

choose who they wanted,
it was a big challenge.

I had to make a lot of calls.

Are you thinking
about coming over?

- We just had a call,
and it looks like 99% running.

- So for safety,

we're gonna make it more of,
like, a family kind of--

everybody help everybody,
look out for everybody.

Does that sound okay for you?

- Amazing.

So you'd be on the ski
tomorrow.

So I'm trying to see
if there's a spot for you.

I just wanted to see

if there was interest
on your side.

- Do you have any idea
who you would work with?

- There are so many people

that I would love to see
in the event,

so many people that deserve
to be in the event.

- They sent me an email.

Okay.

And they had the teams there,

and I saw
my name wasn't there.

- I mean, I wasn't--I was--

[laughs]

- Tony was putting
a lot of time in.

I knew
that he was getting better.

But his ability to drive
in Nazaré was unknown.

I personally didn't know
if he was good or not.

He's been towing out there
so much with his dad.

I never saw him driving.

So we didn't feel safe
with him driving out there.

- Next year, he's gonna be
inside the contest.

- They are saying this,
like, three years now.

- We know that.
- [laughs]

- Yeah, man, I've been waiting
for seven years,

so you're just waiting
for three.

- But I'm Portugal.
I'm from Portugal.

- Okay.

- And the contest
is in Portugal.

It's ridiculous.

- Here, it's so unpredictable,

but this storm
that we're tracking

hasn't changed
for the last three days,

which is almost unheard of,

so that's why we're really
getting confident on this one,

even though it's still
a good four days out.

The contest is going
yellow alert for Sunday.

- For Sunday the 12th?

- I still got these kids.

- You need it?

I don't care about the waves
right now.

I just need my blood work
to be great today.

- Big wave surfing
is a team sport,

and you need to work
as a team.

If you start playing
individual, you're screwed.

- Nic von Rupp,
he has been surfing out there

for four or five years.

He was, like, the most
improved last season.

- In 2020, we only had
the October swell.

Due to COVID, the whole season
was canceled, you know?

Like, I feel like
my dreams were postponed.

And when you put so much
fucking effort into this

and nature just doesn't
collaborate with you,

it can get quite frustrating.

Especially if you've been
waiting for so long.

So this season was like
another opportunity, okay?

Like, we are restarting again.

Like, that was the goal
with partnering up

with a rock star like Scooby.

[upbeat music playing]

- [speaking Portuguese]

- Scooby is just
a really fun guy.

There's nothing in his life
he takes serious, you know?

He's the surfer's
Kim Kardashian.

[laughter]

He likes the fame
and the money, you know?

[laughs]

- [laughs]

- He's a great surfer.
Very talented.

Very experienced in his lane.

It's obviously an honor
to partner up with him

'cause we are great friends.

But we're very opposite.

It's always a battle.

Always am calling him like,
"Hey, Scooby,

there's a huge swell.
Are you coming?"

- "Fuck! Let's go!

It's the biggest surf
in history!"

Say, "No, it's not, Nic."
[laughs]

- Scooby always tells me,
"Yeah, yeah, yeah,

let's partner up this year,"
and then I always know

that he's never gonna be here.

That's the difference
between a rock star

and a professional surfer,
you know?

I don't need to check
on Scooby's social network

to know what he's doing.

I know he likes to be home
in Brazil

drinking his caipirinha
in the warmth.

- In his mind, I would not
be there when he needs me.

But in the biggest days,
in the contests,

I would be there, of course.

- I'm here!

- Scooby just arrived
from Brazil.

I had to drag him out of bed
in Brazil.

- He was getting ready
for New Year's.

- I think Scooby's looking
a little fatter.

Lot of pequena, not much sex.

- Not fat. Strong, bro.

- I believe in partnerships.

That people make each other
stronger, you know?

When it comes down
to big wave surfing

and riding huge waves
and wave knowledge

and how to ride a wave,
how to ride a barrel,

we are on the same level.

Scooby makes me
a more complete surfer,

and I make him
a more complete surfer as well.

We had the same goal,

to be better than Kai
and Chumbo.

They are the best performers
at Nazaré so far.

- Lucas and I were
fierce competitors.

Like, I wanted to destroy him
in the final.

He wanted to destroy me
in the final.

You know,
it was real competitiveness,

but Lucas and I both came
to the conclusion,

like, "Hey, if we're gonna be
competing against each other,

"why not just team up
so we have the best shot

at just winning
every single time?"

[cheers and applause]

- [laughs]

- [laughs]

- For me,
after five years in Nazaré,

I lost motivation
to go with her

in crazy, giant waves
with crazy people around

and with wind
and with whatever,

like, because we've done it
so much

and she's reached
such a high level

that I'm like, why?

I don't like the competition
part of big wave surfing.

Like, I support Justine
and I help her,

but I don't want to be
part of this.

- I knew
that I could count on him

for be there,

but I knew
that he didn't want it too.

So I realized that I had
to find a partner.

It was challenging for me...
[laughs]

To find a good partner

that I would be happy
to team up with.

Pierre being French means
the communication is good.

- And I have
a good relationship with him,

so I was like, "Okay."

[bell rings]

- All right,
I'm struggling here.

- There's a knife.

- The knife is
on the countertop, no?

- I know that to free surf
and on the bigger swells,

I can tow with Garrett.

But coming into that contest,
to compete,

I had to find someone else.

- So I picked Will.

He's been around Nazaré
since, like, 2014,

and he's really good
on the ski.

- I've never done a tow contest
in my life, ever, so...

- Oh, really?
- Yeah.

This is my first tow contest.

- Competitive surfing is
definitely not my strong point.

You know, so I do get nerves.

not just going straight
and barely surviving.

but my performance wasn't
on point that day.

So I jumped on the Jet Ski

and I pulled Scooby
into a wave.

came through,

and he faded so deep.

The lines he was taking,
I was like, "Oh, my God!"

- What I did
in the first heat?

Go to another level, you know?

Push my limit.

- I mean, I was, like,
really impressed.

I was like, "Wow, this guy--
like, this guy means business.

We're gonna win this shit."

- That was good to see,

They were, like,

- I ended up fading and doing
a front-side 360 and landing,

and when I turned right,
the cliff was right there.

- Ended up getting
sucked over the falls

and held down for so long.

The whole time underwater,
I'm thinking,

"I actually might die right now

'cause I'm gonna hit
the cliff."

I was waiting
to just hit a rock.

I don't think he's there.

- Chumbo being the best partner
anyone could ask for,

he came in so quick.

just skimming off the sled

before the Jet Ski goes around

I could hear the Jet Ski,

I was, like, pretty dizzy.

It was like,
"What did we just go through?"

And, you know, Pedro Scooby
and Nic von Rupp's team

were really close.

- Scooby just transformed
himself.

You know, he took his juice.

And he just
beasted up, like, wah.

- And we go to live action.

as he'll stall himself here.

He's just kind of putting
himself in the slop.

We had, like,
ten seconds to go,

and I was like, "Bro, bro,

on the clock--

any last-gasp efforts.

- I can hear, like,

been done before,

and he did it, you know?

- Right after the contest,
Tony was surfing,

and I remember watching him
and being,

"Wow, this guy is connected
with the wave.

He's got such a good flow,
such a good timing with them."

- And I was just trying,
like, 360s

and doing, like, huge airs,

like, basically
just having fun.

But at the same time,

I was doing
kind of, like, a show

for the crowd
that was outside.

[indistinct chatter]

- Congratulations.

- Awesome stuff.

- Another round of applause
for our Best Team!

[cheers and applause]

- While the contest
was happening,

I was waiting
for the results to come in.

That made me want to induce.

You know, we wanted
the contest to happen

before the baby happened
so that there'd be no...

pressure, you know.

I should've been
at the contest,

but I couldn't even walk
still at this point...

[scoffs]
'Cause my back was so bad.

Well, my labs are really shit,

so I have to have this baby,
like, today.

And I want my mom.
- I know, sweetheart.

- And I don't want
to tell her that.

- I know.

- All of a sudden, they said,

"You have to have
the baby out by this time,

or it will die."

She just needed support.

She needed me
to be there for her.

- The most beautiful thing
about Garrett

is that he's always, always
willing to work on himself.

And I found him
to be much more present

after the contest was done.

- There's one.
- He's ready.

- All right.

- We just had to all help
each other and rally together.

- Hello.
How's everything going?

- It's gonna happen.

- Garrett has this deep drive

to just be going,
to not really stop and be.

And he definitely gets
a lot of that rubbed off of us,

but he heals us too

in his, like,
"charge it, go for it" way.

- The big one? No.

- No way.

- Yeah, that's way better.

- There's this reciprocal
support going on

where we offer things
to each other

that gets each of us out of
our comfort zone a little bit,

and we know it's good for us.

- Huh?
[chuckles]

- So I wanted to home birth,

which means I have everybody
in my living room

through all of this.

And around 2:00
in the morning,

the contractions woke me up.

[breathing heavily]

[screams]

- Oh, there she is.
She's here.

- [crying]

- Ah.

- [laughing]

- Wait.

Oh. Okay.

- She's perfect.

[baby crying]
- We did. We all did.

- Hey, your sister.

Your sister's here.

Your baby sister.
[baby cries]
